Remember, boys, Da’ Maniac loves you like you’re his own — so it’s probably for the best that the cops took him away.
It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia has been blessed to host so many incredible guest stars and celebrity cameos throughout the years, but only one A-lister who graced the set of the show was so good that the cast feared for both their and his safety: the late, great Roderick George Toombs, better known by his WWE stage name, “Rowdy” Roddy Piper. On multiple episodes of Always Sunny, the professional wrestling legend played Da’ Maniac, an unhinged, emotional and entirely hilarious amateur wrestler whom the Gang hires and nervously befriends shortly before the police drag him away for his unpaid parking tickets.

WrestleMania began as an amazing but ambitious gamble in 1985, and since then, it has turned into a giant, yearly spectacle that brings people together from all corners of the world to watch their favorite wrestlers duke it out. Whether you’re sitting in the arena seats or watching from your couch halfway across the planet, WrestleMania is where the biggest matches, craziest moments, and unforgettable surprises take place.
WrestleMania 41 came in hot and left fans absolutely gobsmacked. The hype was already through the roof with Cody Rhodes set to defend his Undisputed WWE Championship against John Cena. Cena, WWE’s poster boy for nearly 20 years, has finally turned heel. That’s right. The guy who’s been waving the flag for hustle, loyalty, and respect did a complete 180 and shocked the WWE Universe. And just when we thought that twist was wild enough, Night 1 gave fans the first shocker when...

Can you imagine Ben Affleck and Jon Bernthal, the tough-guy actors of The Accountant 2, having a Complex Goat Talk conversation where they nerd out on WWE? They’re both dudes that grew up in the ‘80s when wrestling was everywhere, pictures of Hulk Hogan flexing and fans filling stadiums.
When they revealed their favorite wrestlers, there was clearly a gap between them. Ben Affleck threw out Ric Flair, the well-known, flashy wrestler. For Bernthal, he brought out Junkyard Dog, and Hillbilly Jim, and made it clear that he was a serious wrestling aficionado. Let’s break down Bernthal’s fandom that beat Affleck’s fandom to the finish line.

We’ve covered quite a few post-apocalyptic films in previous editions of Horror Adjacent, and I think there’s a simple reason for that. No matter how light-hearted the rest of the movie is, death and destruction on a global scale will always be a frightening concept – especially when you consider that our species is actually capable of initiating a nuclear holocaust at any moment.
However, some movies are better at masking these darker elements than others, and today I’d like to discuss a particularly odd picture that’s been referred to as both a criminally underrated cult classic and a perfect example of so-bad-it’s-good cinema in equal measure. Naturally, I’m referring to Donald G. Jackson and R.J. Kizer’s 1989 Roddy Piper vehicle, Hell Comes to Frogtown, a post-apocalyptic thriller that somehow blends classic monster movies, raunchy sex comedies and Mad Max into a single ridiculous package.

Indiewire reports that the UK company Vice Press Home Video is bringing 1988’s They Live back to VHS, the next release in a lineup from the company that recently brought films including Evil Dead II and Suspiria back to the not-quite-dead VHS format.
Two different editions will be released by Vice Press. The first, seen above, is the eye-catching “They Live, We Sleep” edition, based on the film’s hidden message imagery and spooled onto white VHS tapes. When John Carpenter‘s “They Live” was released in 1988, it became an instant favorite among sci-fi enthusiasts for its sly, scary tale of aliens controlling us via subliminal messages that could be consciously perceived only by wearing special sunglasses. Carpenter intended the film as a cautionary tale about the dangers of unrestrained capitalism, a theme that has only gained increased resonance in the 37 years since he made it.
The enduring popularity of “They Live” among genre fans has yielded a number of special edition releases on physical media over the years, and now there’s an especially enticing one for Carpenter aficionados looking to simulate the way they might have first experienced “They Live” back in the 1990s: a new widescreen VHS version from the UK’s Vice Press Home Video.

Even though professional wrestling involves a degree of acting, the professional wrestler-to-actor pipeline hasn't been particularly smooth for most. Hulk Hogan generally found himself unable to tone down the volume and the bluster of yelling to an entire arena, and while Roddy Piper had some success with John Carpenter's "They Live," he owes it to the director being a wrestling fan.
In the '90s, wrestling began to change into its "Attitude" era, often called the Monday Night Wars, developing more adult and reality-based themes, and depending at least as much on behind-the-scenes vignettes as in-ring action. This transition required a newer, more versatile sort of performer, and none excelled at it more than Dwayne Johnson, aka The Rock. It was in The Rock's charisma as both hero and villain that promoter Vince McMahon saw the potential for the World Wrestling Entertainment to gain a foothold in Hollywood, and WWE Studios,...

The first WrestleMania in WWE history was almost ruined in an instant. One of the biggest business decisions of Vince McMahon's career as a promoter, WrestleMania would help launch WWE into the global superpower that it is today. Had the first edition been a failure, the company's lifespan would have not been so long. As fans know, the first WrestleMania was a resounding success, but the event actually almost ended in disaster.
On YouTube, during the B4 the Bell podcast, one host, Chris Burns, revealed that a past conversation with the late Roddy Piper saw the Rowdy One insinuate that he almost considered killing Mr. T during the main event of WWE's first WrestleMania. The real heat that stemmed backstage between Mr. T and Roddy Piper has been well-documented, but this is the first instance that it's been said that Piper hated him badly enough to want to kill him.

Before it was announced that Jonny Fairplay would star in House of Villains, he was already a Survivor legend. In fact, fans of Jeff Probst's beloved reality show who aren't worried about which seasons to watch first may know Jonny is a Survivor legend. The reason for that is that although Jonny isn't one of the best players, he avoided being medically evacuated and created an infamous moment during one of Survivor's best seasons.
Long before Jonny became one of Survivor's most infamous villains, he worked for an entertainment industry legend. Amazingly enough, that legendary figure grew to hate Jonny so much that he once made shocking allegations in public.

The utter weirdness of Alex Cox’s remarkable debut—a document of L.A.’s hardcore punk scene that’s also an ode to its car culture, a critique of the American middle class, and a kind-of sci-fi comedy about a radioactive Chevy Malibu—would seem to preclude its existence. And yet here it is. Forty years later, Repo Man is no worse for the wear. Not so much ahead of its time as outside of it, the film’s L.A. punk particularities have broadened over the years. Its ennui has endured not just as a portrait of a certain generation of angry adolescents, but as one of angry adolescence writ large. In a way, the film’s timelessness has always been assured by Cox’s restless protagonist, Emilio Estevez’s suburban punk-cum-repossession agent Otto, who’s always seemed like a bit of a nonentity.

Wrestling promos are the bread and butter of the WWE system. Promos are arguably even more important than the actual in-ring wrestling. Of course, the latter is important, but they're called promos for a reason. They promote - sell - to audiences matches and storylines, to motivate them to keep coming back for more.
Promos sell audiences the stories the wrestlers are telling, the shows coming soon to a venue near them, and why they should pay to buy a ticket or watch the product. A promo can be a solo segment from a wrestler directed to someone else, an interview, or even a talking segment with multiple wrestlers. As successful as WWE is now, much of that success is hinged on the quality of their promos. More than just promote, promos are capable of changing the landscape of storylines.

It started with a friendly question between coworkers. /Film writer Bill Bria asked me when the last time was that I watched "Beetlejuice." Considering the sequel film "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice" is now in theaters (read our review here), I've been doing a deep dive back into all things "Beetlejuice," including rewatches of the original film and the animated series currently available on Tubi (but hard to find almost anywhere else). But Mr. Bria's inquiry was more specific than wanting to know how practical effects were pulled off or remembering one-liners. Knowing that I am our glorious publication's resident wrestling aficionado, he asked me a question that then haunted me for hours until I could find the answer: "What wrestling match is playing on the TV when the Maitlands try to scare a passed-out Delia Deetz (Catherine O'Hara) by dressing like sheet ghosts?

The 1988 science fiction action horror will find a new home next month as They Live lands on streaming service Peacock. The film, based on a 1963 short story titled Eight OClock in the Morning by Ray Nelson, was Carpenters eleventh feature film and one of professional wrestler Rowdy Roddy Pipers first forays into acting for the big screen. The film saw success when it was originally released, hitting number one at the North American box office, but it received negative reviews upon its initial debut. The movie would go on to receive more favorable reviews in the present as critics praised the message of anti-consumerism at the center of the movie. Rob McElhenney had a random dream one night about someone borrowing sugar from a terminally ill person. His dream was the inspiration for It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. FX (later Fxx as of 2013) picked up the show after viewing the pilot, which was made for an estimated $100 to $200 by McElhenney and fellow members of "the gang" Glenn Howerton and Charlie Day. Eventually, Kaitlyn Olson and Danny DeVito came on board, and now Always Sunny is the longest-running live-action sitcom in television history.
It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia has had an impressive run since it premiered in 2005. The show has gone for sixteen seasons and is already slated for two more. The '80s was a fantastic decade for horror movies. There was a huge range of horrors as filmmakers made their mark by creating distinctive movies that shocked the world. The '80s produced some of horror's most scary villains, with Freddy Krueger and Jason Voorhees taking on the mantle of '70s horror icons like Halloween's Michael Myers.
The '80s was a great time for slashers but also sci-fi horrors and psychological movies like The Shining. The expansion of the genre was great as new viewers were invited to experience a range of new horror movies. It's because of this that the '80s is fondly remembered as a stand-out decade for horror as new generations of genre fans explore the movies that defined the '80s.

Leave it to John Carpenter to inject scathing social commentary into a film where the ugly reality of a hyper-capitalist world is revealed after wearing sunglasses that also unmask aliens living among the populace. These special sunglasses unlock the core of "They Live," which highlights the constant subliminal messaging that humans are subjected to by the affluent — in this case, aliens posing as humans, who are bent on depleting Earth's resources. We follow blank-slate everyman John Nada (Roddy Piper), a drifter who surveys his surroundings with cool indifference until he stumbles upon a nefarious conspiracy, revealed through the sunglasses that challenge the traditional normalcy of perceived reality. Shaken to the core, Nada desperately wishes to confide in someone but is left to contend with this revelation without any real allies.

As of this writing, there have been well over 400 WrestleMania matches since the event began back in 1985. Since then, countless WWE wrestlers (and even a couple celebrities) have battled it out in so many different ways and with quality that runs the gamut from unwatchable to undeniable. In what is supposed to be WWE’s biggest annual show, some matches fall short, but others rise to the occasion and put together some unforgettable performances.
But today we’re celebrating the very best matches WrestleMania has ever offered wrestling fans. But first, some ground rules. First, as there are so many WrestleManias to cover, we are only going to allow one entry per event. The modern shows with two nights of festivities will only count as one combined event. Second, to keep things from becoming repetitive, there will be no match redundancies. If two wrestlers battled it out in multiple WrestleManias,...

This article contains mild Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire spoilers.
Before Godzilla vs. Kong finished its opening weekend, genre director and lifelong kaiju fan, Adam Wingard, knew he had to get these two crazy guys together again. Despite releasing the film in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic—Godzilla vs. Kong was in fact one of the first bright spots for movie theaters in the spring of 2021 when social distancing kept cinemas at a quarter capacity—the vibe in the auditorium was still electric by picture’s end.
“I remember there’s a moment at the end of the movie when Godzilla and Kong briefly team up to kill Mechagodzilla,” Wingard says while stifling a sheepish chuckle at the absurdity of it all. “And when that happened, the roof blew off the place. People were just so into it, man, they were so excited, cheering, and stuff. It hit...

In Adam Wingard's "Godzilla vs. Kong," the two Titans clash viciously and almost push one another to the brink of destruction. However, the rise of a new threat, Mechagodzilla (possessed by King Ghidorah's consciousness), prompts the two to cooperate and take down their common enemy. Although Godzilla and Kong go their separate ways after this event, is this temporary truce meant to last? This question leads us directly into "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire," in which Wingard has returned to orchestrate a memorable showdown between the colossal Titans amidst an unknown threat poised to destroy the world as we know it. While a classic premise for a creature feature, it is a story that fans of the MonsterVerse are eager to experience, especially with the promise of a brand new antagonist lurking in the shadows.

There are few television shows where one moment, you can see wrestler Rowdy Roddy Piper fully freaked over a poltergeist and the next, catch The Partridge Family‘s Shirley Jones in an ascot mildly put out by a haunted house. Such is the joy of Celebrity Ghost Stories.
One of the show’s many notable qualities is that the celebrities within one episode are strangely matched, like someone tore out pages from a bunch of People magazines from the 1970s and beyond, threw them in the air like confetti, and then picked 3 or 4 celebs at random to group together per episode. This isn’t a criticism — what would the alternative even be, weird theme nights? — but it’s amusingly whiplash-inducing all the same.

The release date for WWE 2K24 is getting closer, and fans have been waiting to get their hands on it. The upcoming title will also include a 40 Years of WrestleMania edition, so fans can look forward to reliving some iconic matches. The roster for the game is also looking good, with several returning characters joined by a few surprise entries.
Among them, however, fans have noticed the absence of one superstar, leading to a lot of confusion, especially as the Showcase mode is filled with former WWE legends, so missing out on this particular superstar makes little to no sense, but that could still change before the game is out.

The "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" guest star roster is impressive. The series has seen special appearances by the likes of Sean William Scott, Lance Reddick, P. Diddy, Tom Sizemore, and more, but among the best of the best is "Rowdy" Roddy Piper, who played the wrestler known as "Da Maniac" in the hit FX comedy series. First appearing in the episode "The Gang Wrestles for the Troops," Piper really gives his all to the character, who is a down-on-his-luck amateur wrestler who works in the local Philly circuit. It looks like he might live out of his car and he tries to sign autographs on parking tickets, but he's pretty good at the whole wrestling thing (and he's a fantastic Invigiron berry pill salesman!).

The comic book adaptation of Ray Nelson's 1963 short story "Eight O'Clock in the Morning" likely helped bring the story to John Carpenter's attention, leading to the creation of his cult film They Live. "Eight O'Clock in the Morning," the comic book story "Nada," and They Live, all feature a central character who discovers the true nature of the world and sacrifices their life to save humanity. The enduring appeal of They Live lies not only in its portrayal of aliens, but also in the compelling human hero at the center of the story.
While many fans of John Carpenter's cult 1988 film They Live are aware that it was based on a 1960s short story, Ray Nelson's "Eight O'Clock in the Morning," few may realize that the movie also took inspiration from a short comic book adaptation of the original source material, released just a few years before Carpenter's adaptation hit theaters.

While The Iron Claw is earning high marks from critics and viewers alike (with an enviable A-Cinemascore rating), wrestling fans – who mostly love the film – have one issue with it. They don’t like the way wrestling legend Ric Flair was depicted, with many saying he came off as cartoonish. It’s not that Flair is depicted in a negative way; it’s just that fans feel the actor, Aaron Dean Eisenberg, wasn’t able to capture the legendary wrestler’s charisma in a way that makes sense.
“Well, look, what he (director Sean Durkin) should have done is use archival footage of Ric Flair and then have this guy maybe come in and do the mannerisms of Ric Flair in the ring,” said our own Travis Hopson (who also has his own site), who gave the film a very positive review but noted that as his only problem with the film.

Not all action stars are as tough in real life as they appear on-screen. Many actors rely on stunts and stunt doubles to pull off their action sequences. Some actors have real-life experience in combat or sports that make them more believable as tough guys on screen.
Enough fire and smoke, and anyone can be an action hero. The majority of the dudes on-screen kicking ass and taking names, posing without their shirts, wouldn’t last five minutes in a bar-room brawl. When the stuntmen finish extinguishing their smoldering clothes and the Emt crews on stand-by go home, you find out a lot about an actor. Just ask Jack O’Halloran, who nearly beat the crap out of his Superman co-star, Christopher Reeve, on set.
Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise only play bad asses on-screen. It’s a testament to their charisma and determination to their stunt-work that they can pull off those kinds of roles.

When it comes to the Transformers franchise, countless robots in disguise have taken on the most coveted alternate form of all: icon status. Nevertheless, there are others that lack this acclaim, instead veering to the opposite extreme. Said Cybertronians are seen as both the worst parts of their respective cartoons or movies.
The reasons for why these characters are frowned upon range from intentionally being portrayed as unlikable to unflattering designs and poor writing. Some of them added to the issues present in already criticized continuities, while others brought down otherwise well-received entries. Worst of all, two Autobots in particular were the offensive faces of what may be the property's worst movie ever.

Television has long embraced sports as a staple of entertainment, and within the world of animation, their popularity gave rise to some of the strangest cartoons imaginable. Whether football, wrestling, or other beloved pastimes, cartoons have created a canvas that allowed imaginations to run wild and athletes to embark on bizarre adventures. Often too numerous to count and too strange to be believed, cartoons play a vital role in engaging younger viewers, helping to create the next generation of sports fans.
Classic characters such as Popeye the Sailor, Bugs Bunny and Goofy are no strangers to competitive sports. In the past, cartoons weren't afraid to satirize beloved pastimes, and they often got the most laughs as the medium allowed for all kinds of physical gags, impossible plays and surreal scenarios that usually couldn't happen with real athletes. However, just as cartoon characters entered the world of sports, it didn't stop athletes like Michael Jordan,...

They Live, a film from 1988, accurately portrays the rise of consumerism, control, and conformity in our society through its depiction of marketing paranoia. John Carpenter, the writer, and director, uses special sunglasses in the film to reveal subliminal messages of obedience and consumption in billboards, highlighting issues of manipulation. The film's message of hope is that we can overcome the powers that be, but unfortunately, it seems like the film warned us too late, as we now live in a world of invasive advertising and the politicization of important issues.
It’s amazing how all the signs have been right in front of us the entire time. We have been living in a consumer-based society for decades but have never truly known how deep we were getting until it was too late. Or have we?
