When one actor is particularly magnetic to watch, the well-worn adage goes that fans would pay money to see that actor read the phone book. Fans of Diane Keaton and Morgan Freeman that would find that directory patter electrifying will be part of the target audience for 5 Flights Up, yet another septuagenarian drama that coasts almost entirely on the gentle chemistry between those stars. If you’re willing to pay money to see them go apartment shopping, this is the film for you.
Freeman and Keaton star as Alex and Ruth Carver, a charming couple with mixed feelings about selling their quaint Brooklyn apartment – one that overlooks the bridge, has a garden on the roof and plenty of sunlight coming through the windows. They have lived at this picturesque location for 40 years, but now that Ruth has retired from teaching and Alex huffs to get up the five flights leading to the door,...

Now here’s an unexpectedly charming on-screen couple: Morgan Freeman and Diane Keaton. The pair star in 5 Flights Up, in which they play a married couple moving from their long-time Brooklyn apartment now that the neighborhood has slanted entirely hipster. The trouble of course is finding a buyer and finding a home that’ll suit them in their twilight years.
Sounds simple and charming enough, and with this cast, it’s plenty to attract the big senior audience that just poured out to see The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel at matinees across the country (seriously, don’t see a Meryl Streep movie at 2 Pm on a weekday. You’d think you’re seeing a midnight showing of The Hunger Games).
Richard Loncraine (Wimbledon, Firewall) directs from a script by Charlie Peters and a novel by Jill Climent. 5 Flights Up opens on May 8. Here’s the full synopsis via IMDb,...

Directed by Richard Loncraine from Charlie Peters' script, the film world-premiered earlier this month in Toronto, where critics were mixed but affectionate toward the cast. Keaton and Freeman play a long-married couple who, over one weekend, debate selling their Brooklyn walk-up. Throw in Cynthia Nixon, the family dog and a raft of open-house guests and everything goes comically nutty. "Ruth & Alex" is based on Jill Ciment's book "Heroic Measures." Release date forthcoming.

Morgan Freeman and Diane Keaton have had long careers, both of them have won Oscars, and both of them are so popular and prolific that you'd have to assume they crossed paths at some point, right? Nope. The two will be filming their first movie together this year-- and even better, they'll be getting romantically involved to do it. Myriad Pictures announced the two will star in Richard Loncraine.s comedy Life Itself, and they.ll play a long-married couple, so they.re really going to get some screen time together in a plot that sounds more enjoyable than most of the feel-good projects that Keaton usually gets herself into. I really was a bad student in high school. Not horrible in the classical sense but I was absolutely a C student and I couldn’t grasp mathematical or scientific in ways that made me wonder if I was functionally retarded.
Smash cut to college and one of the very first classes I took my first semester was Geology 101. Kid you not, it was really brutal. Theories on geological formations, how earth’s natural functioning is a result from eons of slow and steady processes, why Illinois is so damn flat (glaciers!

See new clips from "My One and Only," starring Renée Zellweger, Kevin Bacon, Logan Lerman and Chris Noth. The film is helmed by Richard Loncraine from the writing by Charlie Peters. Aaron Ryder and Norton Herrick produce. The romantic comedy sees limited areas on September 4th. Plot: The tires of a baby-blue ’53 Cadillac Coupe de Ville convertible squeal down the New York street, and none of its occupants looks back. The beautiful but mercurial Ann Devereaux (Renée Zellweger) has just left her philandering husband Dan Devereaux (Kevin Bacon), a society bandleader, and taken to the road with her teenage sons, George (Logan Lerman) and Robbie (Mark Rendall), in search of a wealthy replacement mate. Although it’s 1953, Ann is certain that her girlish...

Semi-retired from acting at the age of 70, George Hamilton is happy being remembered for his suntan, his gleaming teeth, and his reputation as a Hollywood Zelig. His autobiography, Don’t Mind if I Do, released in paperback in May, reveals how he left his modest Arkansas roots to make it as an actor, and how he spun the illusion of a glamorous lifestyle out of whole cloth. This week, a new movie called My One And Only—starring Renée Zellweger, Kevin Bacon, and 17-year-old Logan Lerman as a precocious George coming into his own—dramatizes a chapter of that journey, wherein his mother drove him and his brother across the country on a quest to find a provider among a list of her old flames. (The film, directed by Richard Loncraine, attracted the biggest crowds per theater this weekend.) We called Hamilton with the intention of interviewing him about the movie,...

I can't decide whether it helps or hurts to go into My One and Only with the knowledge that the teenage character of George Devereaux, played by Logan Lerman, will eventually grow up to become George Hamilton. It's not as if it's a secret; Hamilton's name is in the opening credits. He published his autobiography earlier this year, Don't Mind If I Do, which included some of these same stories. More important: This isn't a movie about the young George Hamilton -- or even the young George Devereaux. Rather, the focus here is squarely on George's mother, Ann, as played by Renee Zellweger. In fact, the film is a road movie -- episodic, quixotic and all over the map. Director Richard Loncraine, working from a script by Charlie Peters, ultimately can't overcome the story's repetitive structure, though the cast seems to have...

It is the day of the New York premiere of My One and Only and Logan Lerman has still not seen a final cut of the film in which he co-stars opposite Renèe Zellweger. "I saw a version that was cut together but it wasn’t the final product and it was great. So I am excited to see it tonight."
Lerman plays veteran actor George Hamilton — yes, the George Hamilton famed for movies like Love at First Bite and Zorro: the Gay Blade, for his irrepressible turn on Dancing with The Stars, for his tan — as a young man. Zellweger plays his mother Ann, who together with his half brother Robbie (Mark Rendall), leave New York when Ann discovers her husband (Kevin Bacon) has a philandering eye.
