10 Weak Films With Great Endings That Justify the Watch
Image
There is a lot of truth to the belief that a movie's ending can and will make or break it. Even the best stories and spectacles shown on the big screen had their legacies ruined in real time because of a questionable or even downright terrible conclusion. The opposite is true for movies that most would consider mediocre or even horrible. Thanks to either an undeniably exciting final fight or a surprisingly compelling and effective narrative endgame, these otherwise lackluster movies were saved from mockery and obscurity. Some even went on to become genuine cult classics.

The only thing more important than these movie endings being fun and emotionally satisfying in a vacuum was how they made up for everything that happened before. Whether it was due to a slow start or an apparent adherence to formula, these movies had rocky starts but, thankfully, ended on high notes. Because of this,...

Jason Statham made waves in movie theaters last year with Meg 2: The Trench, a sequel bigger than the original movie in every aspect. Well, in every aspect except the box office; Meg 2, as of now, has earned $395 million at the worldwide box office, compared to The Meg's $529 million haul. In his second visit to the trench where prehistoric megalodon sharks roam free, Statham must also fight against a group of human mercenaries led by the devious Montes (Sergio Peris-Mencheta). Where Was The Meg 2 Filmed? Sequel's Filming Locations Explained
Image
Meg 2: The Trench was filmed in various locations worldwide, including Watford, England; Hong Kong, China; Phuket, Thailand; and Los Angeles County, California. Warner Bros. Studios in Leavesden, England, played a significant role in the production, with its water tanks being utilized for filming. Phuket, Thailand, served as the filming location for the movie's final act, featuring scenes at the fictional resort of Fun Island where the creatures attack.

Following the events of the first movie, Meg 2: The Trench followed a similar premise, featuring the appearance of creatures once thought to be extinct — megalodons. As teased at the end of The Meg, the sequel, directed by Ben Wheatley, revealed that more than one megalodon escaped the Mariana Trench, which meant that Jason Statham's action hero, Jonas Taylor, was forced to come face to face with the gigantic beasts once again after killing one in the first film. There was a significant degree of excitement in horror circles when it was announced that British director Ben Wheatley was going to be directing the sequel to 2018’s Jason Statham vs Giant Shark blockbuster The Meg. ‘Meg 2: The Trench’ – How the New Shark Attack Movie Adapts Steve Alten’s First Two Novels
Image
The following article contains major spoilers for the novels Meg: A Novel of Deep Terror and The Trench, as well as the feature films The Meg and Meg 2: The Trench.

One year before Steven Spielberg made us all afraid to go into the water, Peter Benchley’s 1974 novel Jaws took the literary world by storm. Nearly fifty years after publication it remains one of the most popular examples of shark fiction with few titles entering the waters of its elite circle. One such novel is Meg: A Novel of Deep Terror by Steve Alten.

Published in 1997, this sci-fi horror brings to life Otodus megalodon, a prehistoric relative of the great white shark estimated to stretch up to 65 feet in length. The novel pits retired rescue diver Jonas Taylor (Jason Statham in the movies) against this mammoth beast after it escapes from a warmer pocket of water near the Mariana Trench.

Meg 2: The Trench Pitch Meeting
Image
The latest installment of the Meg series, Meg 2: The Trench, has faced criticism for its lack of shark action and focus on human conflicts. Like its predecessor, Meg 2: The Trench prioritized the Chinese market over domestic success, helping boost its box office past its early struggles to success. The disappointing performance of Meg 2: The Trench raises doubts about the possibility of a Meg 3, but if a sequel does happen, it should learn from the failures of its predecessor and the MonsterVerse to deliver the thrilling B-movie experience audiences crave.

Though the movie looks to be bouncing back at the box office, Meg 2: The Trench has found itself as the latest target of Screen Rant's Pitch Meeting series. The sequel to the 2018 monster movie sees Jason Statham's Jonas once again recruited to help a group of scientists studying the eponymous Megalodons living in the depths of the Mariana Trench,...

Meg 2 Director Reveals Jaws' Influence on the Sequel
Image
Meg 2: The Trench director Ben Wheatley cited Steven Spielberg's Jaws as a major influence on the film.

In an interview with ScreenRant, Wheatley revealed how his love for classic monster movies, especially Jaws, shaped his creative vision. Despite being based on Steve Alten's novels, The Meg franchise drew inspiration from Spielberg's iconic shark thriller and, according to Wheatley, "a lifetime of watching monster movies." He said, "It comes from, I think, being a kid and watching [Ray] Harryhausen's stuff; watching Jason and the Argonauts and Sinbad and all those movies. The Meg 2 Makes a Strong Box Office Debut Despite Poor Reviews
Image
Meg 2: The Trench debuted at number two at the box office on its opening weekend, despite poor reviews.

The latest film in the Meg franchise had several popular films to compete with on its opening weekend, including Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem and Oppenheimer, both of which have garnered excellent reviews from fans and critics alike. The Meg 2, however, was fighting both rivals at the box office and poor reviews, some of which criticized the film for being boring, cheesy, and predictable. Per Box Office Mojo, The Meg 2 rose above the less-than-stellar reviews to claim the coveted second-place spot, coming in just below Barbie at $30 million; Barbie earned $53 million to retain its top spot.

Meg 2: The Trench: Does Jason Statham's Character Survive the Shark Attack Sequel?
Image
Fans may be curious about what happens in The Meg 2: The Trench once it hits cinemas. Does Jonas succeed in rescuing the situation once more? After the pre-historic animals significantly influenced their submersible trip, Jonas' most recent experience took an unexpected turn. Jonas and the others will still have to deal with three megs, as well as a number of other deep-sea creatures, including a few pre-historic, as they risk their lives.

The Trench is a follow-up to the underwater action film The Meg, starring Jason Statham, originally released in 2019. By providing viewers with more of everything that was successful in the original, like most modern sequels, it aims to elevate the stakes but ultimately results in a mixed bag of a movie. While it wasn’t an easy task for Jonas, the beloved diver did save the day and kill the megs, and survive the events of the movie.

Box Office: ‘Tmnt,’ ‘Meg 2’ Racing Against ‘Oppenheimer’ for Second as ‘Barbie’ Reign Continues
Image
The summer box office season may have reached the dog days of August, but it’s hardly looked stronger over the past few months. Though the openings of “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem” and “Meg 2: The Trench” won’t be able to take down “Barbie” as the top performer in North America, both new releases are boosting theaters to a weekend with four different features grossing north of $25 million.

Paramount Pictures’ “Mutant Mayhem” added $9.3 million from 3,858 locations on Friday, tracking neck-and-neck with “Oppenheimer” for second place on domestic charts. The animated feature, produced by Nickelodeon Movies and Point Grey Productions, opened with Tuesday evening preview screenings and is now tracking for a $42 million five-day debut — squarely within the projections of $35 million to $45 million heading into the weekend.

That’s not shabby for the “Tmnt” entry, which cost only $70 million to produce — an especially economical figure for an animated studio release.

Meg 2: The Trench Ending Explained: Nature Will Listen
Image
This piece was written during the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Without the labor of the writers and actors currently on strike, the movie being reviewed here wouldn't exist. This article also contains major spoilers for "Meg 2: The Trench."

Every summer movie season deserves a killer shark flick! After all, it was a killer shark movie that pretty much kicked off what we now know as the "summer blockbuster" way back in 1975, the immortal "Jaws." Because of that film's success, every killer shark venture is inevitably compared to that Spielberg classic, its three sequels, and the large number of copies that appeared immediately in its wake. In a subgenre that's been through the waves of popularity, postmodernism, and back, there's not a ton that's wholly new out there in the ocean.

For that reason, the Sharksploitation subgenre has generally settled into a pattern not unlike the slasher, an "if it ain't broke,...

Meg 2: The Trench Ending Explained
Image
Warning: Major spoilers for The Meg 2: The Trench below!

Meg 2: The Trench's ending features Jonas and his crew protecting tourists from escaped Megalodons, while also dealing with mercenaries and a villain's plot. Jonas kills two Megalodons but Haiqi, a female Meg, manages to escape. The movie hints at Haiqi being pregnant, suggesting that more Megalodons will pose a threat in the future, along with the possibility of other aquatic creatures.

Meg 2: The Trench's ending once again proves that Megalodons are no match for the apex predator known as Jason Statham. Meg 2 picks up a few years on from the original The Meg's ending, where Jonas and his Mana One team go on another expedition into the Mariana Trench, only to run into trouble from three Megs and discovering an illegal mining base on the bottom. After becoming stranded and managing to escape using one of the base's submersibles,...

Meg 2 Director Stands by PG-13 Rating
Image
The sci-fi action film Meg 2: The Trench, is generating some buzz regarding its MPAA rating.

The sequel to 2018's The Meg, the movie has seemed to have generated anticipation for an R-rated shark thriller, but the director Ben Wheatley disagrees, believing that the PG-13 rating won't hinder the film's impact. In an interview with /Film, he compared the action in Meg 2 to the intensity of the Indiana Jones movies.

In the interview, Wheatley responded to the notion that Meg 2 won't be as gory as Free Fire by explaining that excessive violence isn't essential for impactful and gripping action. He compared the action sequences in Indiana Jones movies despite their PG-13 ratings, as a high watermark for intensity. According to Wheatley, these adventure films engage viewers' imaginations by leaving graphic details to the audience.

Review: Meg 2: The Trench
Image
Plot: When an evil mining operation unearths prehistoric beasts from the ocean’s depths, including multiple megalodons, rescue diver Jonas Taylor (Jason Statham) must suit up to face the return of an old enemy.

Review: 2018’s The Meg overcame middling reviews (including one from yours truly) to become an unlikely global success at the box office. Like its predecessor, Meg 2: The Trench is based on a novel by author Steve Alten, and what’s exciting to genre fans is that the great Ben Wheatley is behind the camera. For those who may not know his work, Wheatley is widely considered one of the UK’s best genre directors, with him having made Kill List, Sightseers, Free Fire, High Rise and – recently – the Netflix remake of Rebecca. This is different for him because it’s a big-budget event movie. How does it fare compared to the original?

Honestly, it’s a mixed bag.

"The Meg," the movie that dared ask, "What if a shark ... was really big?", now has a sequel that asks, "What if there were even more really big sharks? And also, what if we made that boring?" A film destined for the August dumping pile, "Meg 2: The Trench" is notable because it comes from filmmaker Ben Wheatley, a director responsible for the disturbing masterpiece "Kill List," the J.G. Ballard adaptation "High Rise," and more. Wheatley is an excellent filmmaker, and the idea of giving him a blockbuster budget to make a giant shark movie is enticing, at least on paper. Sadly, Wheatley can't work his magic here, as he's saddled with a clunky, dull, low-energy script by Jon Hoeber, Erich Hoeber, and Dean Georgaris. Just how do you make a movie about gigantic prehistoric sharks chomping on modern-day humans so dull? It's kind of impressive.

Once again our human...

Meg 2 Director Explains Movie's PG-13 Rating
Image
The Meg 2: The Trench is the highly-anticipated sequel to the 2018 film and has been in development for a long time due to the pandemic. The movie aims to appeal to a wider audience by keeping the violence at a minimum, similar to the first installment of the franchise. The sequel follows Jason Statham's character, Jonas Taylor, as he leads a team on a dangerous dive into unexplored areas where they awaken a group of terrifying Megs, including the biggest one ever seen.

The Meg 2: The Trench is coming to theaters this week, and is already giving a lot to talk about. The sequel to the 2018 film directed by Jon Turteltaub has been in development almost since the release of the original movie, but it took a long time to get it done because of the pandemic.

The Meg 2: The Trench Director On Making A Sequel Bigger Than The First Movie
Image
The Meg 2: The Trench is a thrilling blend of horror, suspense, action, and comedy, inspired by classic monster movies like Jaws and iconic creature features. Director Ben Wheatley wanted to create an adventure with vulnerable characters that audiences could relate to and worry about, avoiding the typical superhero formula. The sequel expands on the original film by introducing additional sea monsters, upping the stakes and providing new threats that cannot be easily escaped, ensuring non-stop excitement throughout.

Following the events of the first film, rescue diver Jonas Taylor returns in The Meg 2: The Trench along with other survivors from the first mission for another fight with the megalodon. A new research team goes on an exploratory mission to the deepest parts of the ocean, but things become more dangerous than ever when a mining operation threatens their voyage. This conflict turns into a high-stakes battle, and with Megalodon...

The Meg (2018)
Meg 2: The Trench Review: A Campy Splash
The Meg (2018)
Jon Turtletaub’s The Meg was frustratingly dour and straight-faced for a film that pit Jason Statham’s rescue diver Jonas Taylor and a bunch of research scientists against a prehistoric megashark. And for its first hour, Ben Wheatley’s Meg 2: The Trench is also a derivative and listless affair, feebly drawing influence from the likes of Alien, Jaws, and The Abyss but never coming close to approximating their mood of tension and horror.

Meg 2 finds Jonas now working as an eco-warrior alongside engineer buddies Mac (Cliff Curtis) and DJ (Page Kennedy) and a few other scientists. Again venturing into “the trench”—the deepest part of the ocean where megalodons, or megs, in the world of the film still flourish—Jonas and his team encounter an illegal mining operation and eventually find themselves trapped and forced to take extreme measures to escape. This underlit stretch of Wheatley’s film...

‘Meg 2: The Trench’ Review: Tedious Sequel Is Missing Original’s Bite And Gets Lost At Sea
Image
After the 2018 Jason Statham-starring sci-fi action/horror extravaganza The Meg made an imposing global haul of roughly $530 million ($385 million of that from outside the U.S.), it became instantly inevitable that more giant deep-sea monsters would quickly be hatched to populate a sequel. It follows that some of these overgrown aquatic freaks might be very hungry, or perhaps just anti-social and angry that their population is being slightly decreased. Fortunately, Statham is there when he’s most needed, taking on countless creatures whose deep-water habitat is being invaded, perhaps for the first time since the beginning of time. Little wonder they’re upset.

At first, everything about Meg 2: The Trench appears bigger and stronger, now that it’s apparent that the producers look to have a major money-making franchise on their hands. Unfortunately, these same producers, along with their collaborators, have for some reason stinted in the creation...

‘Meg 2: The Trench’ Review: Even Ben Wheatley Can’t Find the Fun in Jason Statham Fighting Massive Sharks
Image
For a certain class of cinephile, the news that Ben Wheatley (Ben Wheatley! “Kill List” and “Free Fire” and “A Field in England” Ben Wheatley!) was directing the sequel to Jon Turteltaub’s 2018 hit “The Meg” could only be met with joy and confusion. If nothing else, it suggested a big-budget film about Jason Statham fighting massive prehistoric sharks that would actually be fucked up, creepy and scary and weird and spine-tingling. Alas, “Meg 2: The Trench” is none of those things, and only occasionally (perhaps even accidentally) fun, yet another seemingly unassailable combination of story and filmmaker that fails to capitalize on any of its obvious promises.

It’s never a good sign when you’re checking your watch during a film — especially a film built on the inherently entertaining elevator pitch of “Jason Statham fights massive prehistoric sharks!” — but audiences will likely find themselves doing just that during...

Meg 2: The Trench featurette promises it’s supercharged with bigger creatures, bigger action
Image
Jon Turteltaub’s 2018 movie The Meg (watch it at This Link) delivered on its promise of being a “Jason Statham vs. a giant shark” adventure – and now director Ben Wheatley’s sequel Meg 2: The Trench is set to reach theatres on August 4th. In a newly released featurette, which you can watch in the embed above, Wheatley says his intention with this film was to make a supercharged sequel with bigger creatures and bigger action… and judging by the footage on display in the featurette, it definitely looks like this follow-up has a change of being better and more exciting than its predecessor.

The screenplay for Meg 2: The Trench has been written by Dean Georgaris, Jon Hoeber, and Erich Hoeber, the same writing team that was on the first film. These films are inspired by a series of novels written by Steve Alten.

Can Meg 2: The Trench Be Another Giant Shark-Sized Success At The Box Office?
Image
Back in 2018, Warner Bros. scored a massive, somewhat unexpected success with "The Meg." The adaptation of Steve Alten's book of the same name, in which Jason Statham takes on a thought-to-be-extinct megalodon, proved to be a big winner with audiences, raking in $530 million at the global box office. Now, five years and a full global pandemic later, Statham is back in the sequel, "Meg 2: The Trench," which once again hopes to become a late summer sleeper hit. This time, though, it appears competition is going to be a bigger issue.

Box Office Pro currently estimates director Ben Wheatley's big shark sequel could make anywhere between $22 and $27 million domestically on its opening weekend. That's not exactly what a studio wants to see with a big blockbuster, to say the least. While the budget has yet to be revealed, the original cost $130 million before marketing. One imagines that "The Trench" isn't any cheaper,...

In fact, a newly released promo, which you can check out in the embed above, says that this time “the Megs are just the beginning”. One of the other giant creatures we’ll be seeing in Meg 2: The Trench is an octopus, and you can get a glimpse of some giant octopus action in this promo, including a moment where the octopus gets in a fight with a Meg! The sequel will feature multiple megalodons and elevated set pieces, including one eating a T-Rex, adding more over-the-top action. The Dolby Cinema poster for Meg 2: The Trench showcases how big the titular megalodon will be. Directed by Ben Wheatley and written by John Hoeber, Erich Hoeber and Dean Georgaris, the movie will see Jason Statham reprise his role as Jonas Taylor as he faces an even bigger megalodon than he did in the 2018 original. The Meg 3 Gets Positive Update Before The Release Of Meg 2: "A Lot More To Explore"
Image
Meg 2: The Trench director Ben Wheatley has offered a positive update for The Meg 3 ahead of the first sequel's release. Meg 2: The Trench sees Jason Statham return as Jonas Taylor, leading a research team to the depths of the ocean. There, they discover more Megalodon sharks, which end up escaping the sea's depths alongside numerous other giant creatures.

Speaking with Total Film (via GamesRadar), Wheatley gave an update about the possibility of The Meg 3, even before Meg 2: The Trench's release in theaters. The director said there is more to be explored in The Meg universe that could warrant another sequel. Check out what Wheatley had to say below:

You don't want to talk about it until Meg 2 is out. But I hope so. There's a lot more to explore in that world. It's very rich. The international-ness of it is very interesting.

Meg 3 Gets Hopeful Update from Ben Wheatley
Image
Meg 2: The Trench is still a few weeks away from hitting theaters, but its director is already thinking ahead. The first film in the action saga starring Jason Statham was released in 2018 and fetched close to $530 million at the box office, on a budget of about $170 million, making it a huge success.

Quickly, Warner Bros. Pictures decided to continue with the story and the sequel was confirmed, which due to the pandemic would take a long time to arrive. Now that only days separate the world from the return of Statham taking on giant sharks, it looks like a third movie could be confirmed soon.

In an interview with TotalFilm, director Ben Wheatley anticipates the future of the franchise by being positive about its continuation:

“You don't want to talk about it until Meg 2 is out, but I hope [to see a third installment]. There's a lot more to explore in that world. It's very rich.
