Canberra, Dec 9 (Ians) Retired tennis star Ashleigh Barty has been awarded Australian sport’s highest individual honour for a second time.
At the annual Sport Australia Hall of Fame event on Thursday night Barty became the third person to win The Don Award — named after cricket great Don Bradman — multiple times.
Entering 2022 as the world No. 1, Barty in January became the first homegrown Australian Open singles champion since 1978.
Less than two months later, the three-time Grand Slam champion announced her shock retirement from tennis at the age of 25, reports Xinhua. “This year was certainly my most enjoyable Australian Open, result aside, that had nothing to do with it. It felt free. I played without consequence, I played like a little kid,” Barty said on Thursday night.
“In my eyes, there was no pressure. It was just about me trying to redeem myself, in a way, and playing how I’d...

Lolo Jones finished a disappointing fourth place in yesterday’s 100m hurdles final and tweeted that she was “brokenhearted” about not medaling in her only Olympic event. But in her interview with Today this morning, that wasn’t what made her tear up.
“I know I had the best race of my season,” she said, putting a more positive spin on the race. “Not the best race of my life, but I had the best race of my year, so I just try to look at that. It doesn’t take away from the pain that I was close to once again having a medal and not getting it.”
What really tore her up, however, was a New York Times story that ran over the weekend, criticizing the hype surrounding her for being “based not on achievement...

Sally Pearson was the heavy favorite to win this event, but with her silver in Beijing, you never know what might happen. She had the fastest qualifying time coming in and extensive experience to boost her confidence. The Us had three excellent contenders, two of which grabbed the silver and the bronze in just over 12 seconds. The revered gold, however, went to the deserving Pearson, who is the 2011 world champion in the event.
Kellie Wells was the only other hurdler to beat Pearson this season, but it was her teammate, Dawn Harper, who won silver. Wells was extremely pleased with her result, though, since she has no previous titles to her name and is virtually a newcomer on the rise. Her third place at the Olympic Games looks to be the beginning of an illustrious career.
