The world of politics is the focus of the first three films, each one of them well-regarded box-office hits. 'The Candidate' In the Michael Ritichie-directed The Candidate (1972), Robert Redford plays idealistic liberal Democrat Bob McKay, who, with no chance of winning, is convinced to run against the Republican incumbent in a fight for a California seat in Congress. See, McKay is too handsome. Too young. Too liberal.

Like most humans presently stalking the Earth, I’ve been watching teevee ever since my eyeballs could focus. Being a fanboy collector, I do my share of possessing odd and great stuff. Sadly, there were two teevee shows I absolutely worshipped that I could not find, even from collectors who obtain their DVDs through questionable means.

The first is T.H.E. Cat, Robert Loggia’s jazz-based New Orleans cat burglar private eye show. It only lasted one season, it was in black-and-white, and each episode only ran 30 minutes. So it’s half-life in syndication was roughly the same as Lawrencium. There are some truly awful bootlegs around, 12th generation dubs of a kinescope shot off of teevee set that desperately needed rabbit ears. I haven’t given up, but the challenge is undermining my otherwise natural sense of happy optimism.

Chicago – We cover hundreds of Blu-rays and DVDs at HollywoodChicago.com every year and most are of the current variety, so it’s always nice to see a well-presented catalog title, a collection that makes a better gift for the classic movie lover in your family than, say, “Little Fockers” or “Yogi Bear.” Fans of Turner Classic Movies will love “Tracy & Hepburn: The Definitive Collection,” a solid 10-disc set eight movies, some of them great, and a fantastic tribute to a celluloid legend.

Actor often seen in unsympathetic roles

Although she rarely had a leading role, the actor Neva Patterson, who has died aged 90, made the most of the parts she was given. She had a great line in cold, uptight, probably sexually repressed women. In the romantic comedy An Affair to Remember (1957), she played an heiress, Lois Clark, waiting on the dock in New York for a playboy (Cary Grant) to arrive from Europe to marry her. But she had not reckoned that he might have fallen for another woman (Deborah Kerr) on board. Although her character is spoilt and controlling, Patterson elicited some sympathy as Lois gradually realises that she is losing her fiance.

To a degree, Patterson was typecast in the movies. In the delightful comedy The Solid Gold Cadillac (1956), she is Judy Holliday's prim secretary, with her hair in a bun and dressed in a severe suit. Holliday...

Patterson was 90. A stage, screen, and television actress, Patterson (born in Nevada, Iowa, on Feb. 22, 1920) appeared in dozens of TV series, 15 features, and on Broadway originated the role of The Seven Year Itch's Helen Sherman, played by Evelyn Keyes in Billy Wilder's 1955 film. But despite good supporting roles in Richard Quine's funny Judy Holliday comedy The Solid Gold Cadillac (1956), Walter Lang's Desk Set (1957), and Frank Perry's David and Lisa (1962), Patterson is chiefly remembered for stoically losing Cary Grant to Deborah Kerr. An Affair To Remember star Neva Patterson has died at the age of 90.

The veteran actress, best known for playing Cary Grant's onscreen fiancee in the 1957 movie classic, passed away at her home in Los Angeles on Tuesday after suffering complications from a broken hip.

Her daughter Megan Lee confirmed the sad news to the Los Angeles Times.

Patterson began her career on the New York stage, notably appearing in a 1952 production of The Seven Year Itch on Broadway and scoring her first movie role a year later in Taxi.

She remains best remembered for her role in An Affair to Remember, but gained legions of sci-fi fans when she appeared in 1980s TV series V, which was brought back to life for a new generation in 2009.

She also enjoyed roles in 1978's The Buddy Holly Story, as well as TV classics including Ironside, The Dukes of Hazzard and St. Elsewhere.
