15 Best Matthew Lillard Movies & TV Shows, Ranked
Image
Matthew Lillard is a well-known name in Hollywood, despite the actor receiving very few leading roles throughout his career. Still, Lillard has a dedicated fanbase that adores him thanks to his most iconic and entertaining roles. He's appreciated for his natural ability to make the audience laugh, which has defined his career in comedy.

Lillard is known for several memorable performances, but few are quite as popular as his rendition of Shaggy Rogers in Scooby-Doo (2002) and his performance as a villainous slasher in Scream. Even in horror roles, he is known for being comical, solidifying his reputation as a comedy actor. However, Lillard has notably serious roles, such as his character portrayal in TV shows like Good Girls and Twin Peaks: The Return. As Lillard plans to return to the Scream franchise for Scream 7 in February 2026, now is a good time to review his best roles.

2020 Airplane Thriller With 80% Rt Becomes Global Netflix Hit
Image
An airplane thriller with 80% on Rotten Tomatoes becomes a global hit on Netflix more than four years after its debut. Though it arrived very late in the year, the airplane thriller premise received a boost with Carry-On. Directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, with T. J. Fixman writing the script. The story centers on a Tsa officer who's blackmailed into allowing a nerve agent on board a flight during Christmas Eve. The cast of Carry-On is led by Taron Egerton, Sofia Carson, Danielle Deadwyler, and Jason Bateman.

By the start of 2025, Carry-On demolished records to become the fifth-most-watched English-language Netflix Original of all time. That data will soon be backed up by Nielsen's streaming charts. But the initial response underlines the holiday-themed thriller struck a nerve with audiences. Another plane-centric suspense saga is catching on with subscribers, albeit four years after it originally premiered on a rival platform.

The 10 Best TV Performances of 2024
Image
The challenge of crafting a list of the best performances of the year never lies in thinking of people who deserve to be on it. It’s always, always in agonizing over which ones to include in the limited slots we have.

That is why, as usual, we’ve restricted ourselves here to shows that aren’t on either of our individual top 10 lists or on our list of favorite episodes (and why we further kept our ourselves to only one actor per show). It’s not that we don’t know how good Andrew Scott on Ripley or Jessica Gunning on Baby Reindeer or the entire casts of Shogun and Somebody Somewhere and My Brilliant Friend are. We do! We just really want to spread the love when we can, given the sheer amount of excellence on display during the past 12 months.

… And even then, if we’re being honest,...

While the original series ran until 1989, the 2005 revival, dubbed New Who by fans, launched a new era of timey-wimey greatness. Now, seven Doctors later, Ncuti Gatwa is stepping into the role of the 15th Doctor. With the Disney+ partnership boosting its reach, this fresh chapter promises to keep the world’s longest-running sci-fi franchise as thrilling as ever.

Doctor Who Season 15 Casts Emmy Winner As A New Villain For Ncuti Gatwa
Image
Doctor Who season 15 has now added an Emmy winner to face off against Ncuti Gatwa's Fifteenth Doctor. Gatwa's era of the long-running BBC sci-fi series kicked off with 2023's seasonal special "The Church on Ruby Road," where he first joined forces with Millie Gibson's Ruby Sunday. The Doctor and Ruby's adventures took them to deep-space warzones, alternate timelines, the Beatlemania of the 1960s, and Regency-era England before life would lead to them parting ways with one another after an emotional Doctor Who season 14 finale.

While season 15 wrapped filming in May, Deadline has reported that The Good Wife star Archie Panjabi will appear in the series when it returns to Disney Plus and BBC One in 2025. It is unknown who Panjabi will play and how many episodes she will appear since the BBC keeps details under tight wraps. However, it is confirmed the role is a villainous character.

‘Shōgun’ Star Anna Sawai Is First Asian to Win Emmy for Lead Actress in a Drama
Image
“Shōgun” star Anna Sawai made history as the first Asian performer to win Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama at the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards on Sunday. Sawai was honored for her captivating leading performance as Lady Toda Mariko in the acclaimed FX series.

Her historic Emmy win comes six years after Sandra Oh became the first Asian performer to be nominated in the lead drama actress category in 2018 for BBC America’s “Killing Eve.” Oh was nominated three more times for the same role, but never won.

Sawai wasn’t the only Asian actress hoping to make a stamp on history. Maya Erskine was also nominated in Sawai’s category for her lead role in Prime Video’s “Mr. & Mrs. Smith.”

Sawai, who was born in New Zealand to Japanese parents and is mainly based in Japan, was considered the frontrunner to win her category, which had heavy competition.

Retro Review: Life on Mars Season 1 Has Lost None of Its Power to Enthrall
Image
It's a day like any other for Detective Chief Inspector Sam Tyler (John Simm), the Manchester policeman at the center of BBC One's Life on Mars (available through a BritBox subscription). Everything is normal until strange circumstances send Sam hurtling into the past. The logline concept sounds great on paper, but it's even better in execution. With far more than just a shoddy framework built around a gimmick, Life on Mars is a hefty series that's never bogged down by awkward exposition. As Sam tries to figure out what happened to him, his journey takes him through intriguing cases, pits him against his peers, and, yes, ultimately answers its most pertinent questions.

Life on Mars aired for two seasons from 2006 to 2007 before spawning an equally brilliant sequel series, Ashes to Ashes (2008-2010). Whereas many other shows premised on similar sci-fi twists tend to lose the thread (and audience interest...

Emmy Experts Typing: What surprises and snubs might we get on nominations morning?
Image
Welcome to Emmy Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Emmy race — via Slack, of course. This week, less than a week out from nominations, we discuss possible shockers.

Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! We’re back for the final time in Phase 1 before Phase 2 becomes all about how many different ways we can say “Shōgun,” “The Bear” and “Baby Reindeer” are favored to win big in, respectively, the drama, comedy, and limited series categories. I’ll miss these lazy months of informed speculation when I could convince myself that Chloe Guidry and Archie Panjabi are legitimate contenders for Emmy nominations for their striking work on “Under the Bridge.” We made our “final” 2024 Emmy nominations predictions this week and what stood out to me in the aftermath is how little we had in the way of disagreement. Image
Hijack season 2 is in production, with Idris Elba leading again alongside new stars Toby Jones, Lisa Vicari, and Christiane Paul. The storyline for season 2 remains a mystery, likely exploring many returning characters and unresolved conflicts. With an expanded cast, season 2 promises more unpredictability and a wider scope, keeping audiences on their toes.

Hijack has cast three major stars, the Idris Elba-led thriller series beginning production on season 2 in the process. Season 1 of the thriller series followed Elba's Sam Nelson, a business negotiator who becomes a key figure in negotiating with hijackers on an airplane from Dubai to London. Hijack season 1 ended with the plane safely landing, after which Sam and the lead hijacker, Stuart, have a final confrontation leading to the latter's arrest. However, there are still plenty of unanswered questions about the group that orchestrated the attack in the first place.

‘Under the Bridge’ EPs Unpack the Finale and Critique the True Crime Genre: ‘We Did Not Want to Make Copaganda’
Image
Spoiler Alert: This interview contains spoilers for “Mercy Alone,” the series finale of “Under the Bridge.”

“Under the Bridge” doesn’t have “a traditional ending,” says showrunner Samir Mehta.

After the penultimate episode of the true crime limited series saw Warren Glowatski (Javon Walton) sentenced to life in prison for his involvement in the 1997 murder of Reena Virk (Vritika Gupta), in the finale, the white, wealthy Kelly Ellard (Izzy G) received only a five-year sentence despite having been the ringleader.

“Justice wasn’t really served in real life, so it couldn’t ever be that type of story where you get to the finale and the bad people go away,” Mehta says. Instead, the episode focuses more on the characters “finding their best shot at peace and finding a little bit of grace in their suffering. Exhibiting a bit of mercy isn’t ever going to make the horror go away,...

Riley Keough on Bringing Humanity to the Tragic Story in ‘Under the Bridge’ Finale
Image
[This story contains major spoilers from the Under the Bridge finale, “Mercy Alone.”]

The final episode of Under the Bridge saw the complete, real-life events come to light around the night Reena Virk (played by Vritika Gupta in the series) was killed in Saanich, British Columbia by a group of teenagers. She was 14 when she first disappeared in 1997.

The first few minutes of “Mercy Alone,” the eighth episode in Hulu’s true-crime limited series based on Rebecca Godfrey’s 2005 book, begin with Kelly Ellard (Izzy G.) talking explicitly to Josephine (Chloe Guidry) about wanting to break Reena’s bones with a bat, burn her at the stake and bury her alive in the forest. Kelly’s mom, who is in the room, does not even flinch at her daughter threatening to kill someone in such detail.

Following Warren Glowatski’s (Javon Walton) life sentence in the penultimate episode for his partial involvement in Reena’s death, Kelly...

Everything You Need to Know About 'Desperate Housewives' Behind-the-Scenes Drama
Image
With any long-running TV show, there are bound to be rumors of behind-the-scenes drama and feuds. Most of the time these are just ploys to get people talking, but sometimes they have some weight behind them. Weve seen these kinds of stories come out of shows such as The Good Wife, where a feud between Julianna Margulies and Archie Panjabi almost tore the series apart. And, of course, the ever-infamous feud between Kim Cattrall and Sarah Jessica Parker on, and off, the set of Sex and the City. But theres another series that has its fair share of scandals: Desperate Housewives. The show follows four housewives; Susan (Teri Hatcher), Bree (Marcia Cross), Lynette (Felicity Huffman), and Gaby (Eva Longoria), and the dramas and scandals that fill their day-to-day lives. The inciting incident is the death of their friend and fellow housewife Mary Alice (Brenda Strong), and when they discover that...

‘Under the Bridge’ Dares to Look at a Different Side of White Girlhood
Image
Hulu’s “Under the Bridge,” which premiered on the streamer last month, could be another drop in the true-crime dead-girl television canon of which there are many varying outings, until it swerves into another direction when telling the horrific true story of Reena Virk. Based on Rebecca Godfrey’s book of the same name, in 1997 the 14-year-old Virk was murdered by a group of teenagers in British Columbia, Canada, after previously being bullied at school.

The television show, helmed by Quinn Shephard and Samir Mehta, delves into Godfrey’s book about Virk’s murder with Riley Keough playing Godfrey and Lily Gladstone as Cam, a fictional character who is a police officer and Godfrey’s estranged friend from high school, who both investigate the Virk case.

In wanting to create a fleshed out show, and to pay respects to Virk, Shephard and Mehta used Godfrey’s book as a jumping off point.

Image
How does a fight between a group of teenagers result in murder?

Hulu’s new true-crime series “Under the Bridge,” based on the late Rebecca Godfrey’s non-fiction book, portrays the before and after of 14-year-old Reena Virk’s brutal murder. The first two episodes, released on April 17, show the timeline of events leading up to Virk’s death and the investigation that took place.

The show, created by Quinn Shephard, tells the story of the events that unfolded through the lens of Godfrey (Riley Keough), a journalist who grew up in Victoria and was working on a novel about teenage girls in her hometown when she found out about the murder, and Cam Bentland (Lily Gladstone), a local police officer who investigated and solved the case.

Godfrey told Interview Magazine in 2019 how she became involved in the show. “I was living in New York City. This would’ve been in the late 90s,...
