Disney princesses are a source of happiness for many fans and have become role models for young children. To many Disney viewers, the princesses represent everything people love about the animation studio. The magic, grace, and wonder associated with each princess remind fans that anything is possible, or at least, it is in the world of Disney.
However, not every Disney princess is well-liked. Despite most people's love of Disney princesses, plenty of them weren't well-received. For some people, the princesses represent the lack of independence women had at the time of films like Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. For others, it's simply because they don't like the princesses' personalities.
Updated by Alexandra Locke on July 3, 2024: Disney has garnered much of its success from its princess films. The female protagonists in these stories have a variety of personalities and virtues. However, that does not make them immune to criticism.

Stars: DeWanda Wise, Taegen Burns, Pyper Braun, Betty Buckley, Tom Payne, Veronica Falcon | Written by Jeff Wadlow, Greg Erb, Jason Oremland | Directed by Jeff Wadlow
Produced by BlumHouse and directed by Jeff Wadlow (Fantasy Island), Imaginary is a solidly entertaining Friday night horror flick that does a decent job with its premise. It may not deliver any really big scares (at least not if you’re not frightened of bears or spiders), but it’s consistently creepy and tense and Wadlow pulls off a couple of neat twists.
DeWanda Wise plays Jessica, a children’s book author and illustrator who has recently married musician Max (Tom Payne) and become stepmother to his two daughters, stroppy teenager Taylor (Taegen Burns) and six year-old Alice (Pyper Braun). When the family move into Jessica’s old family home, Alice finds an old teddy bear in the basement and quickly turns him into her imaginary friend,...

Blumhouse and Lionsgate’s horror movie Imaginary is now available on Blu-ray, DVD, and Digital from Lionsgate, in the wake of the film scaring up $39 million at the box office.
To whet your appetite for the home video release, Lionsgate has provided Bloody Disgusting with an exclusive clip from the bonus features package, which takes you into the Never-Ever, a land of pure imagination where monsters roam free. This is a horror movie, after all.
“The Never-Ever set was a really fun set to conceive with [director Jeff Wadlow],” production designer Meghan Rogers recalls. “We really had to kind of think outside the box.”
The team built a real practical set and augmented it with visual effects to “make it seem a little bit more fantastical.” See how the Never-Ever came to life in the exclusive clip below.

Blumhouse returned to the big screen with brand new horror movie Imaginary over the weekend, and the marketing campaign from Blumhouse and Lionsgate suggested that the studios were hoping to have another M3GAN on their hands. But while M3GAN opened to $30 million in early 2023, Imaginary only scared up 1/3 of that number in its debut weekend.
Director Jeff Wadlow’s Imaginary pulled in $10 million at the domestic box office over the weekend, but the good news for Blumhouse is that the film’s production budget was just $10-12 million. The Blumhouse model all but ensures that these smaller horror movies are going to be profitable no matter what – even if audiences and critics agree they’re not so good.
Speaking of which, you can read Meagan’s review for Bloody Disgusting here.

In the crammed video aisle of supernatural horror films, the introduction of a villainous teddy bear in Imaginary might initially raise more eyebrows than pulse rates. Directed with a keen eye for the absurd by Jeff Wadlow (director of Nofs fave Cry_Wolf) and penned by the trio of Wadlow, Greg Erb, and Jason Oremland, this latest offering from Blumhouse Productions – the powerhouse behind a slew of commodified villains – might seem like it’s scraping the bottom of the horror trope barrel. The film stars DeWanda Wise, Tom Payne, and the delightful Betty Buckley, in a narrative that threads the familiar needle of haunted playthings and the unseen horrors they sneak under our beds.

Imaginary, produced by Blumhouse, joins a disappointing lineup of films with low critical ratings, continuing the losing streak. Starring DeWanda Wise, Tom Payne, and an eerie stuffed bear named Chauncey, the supernatural thriller lacks scares and engaging storyline. Despite recent flops, Blumhouse has had successes like Get Out and plans for upcoming projects like Speak No Evil.
Imaginary is continuing Blumhouse Productions' losing streak. The supernatural thriller marks the fourth consecutive film produced by the low-budget production company that failed to impress critics. The other films that make up this group are Night Swim, Five Nights at Freddy's, and The Exorcist: Believer (the first of a planned - but now seeminly defunct - trilogy).

Just two months after Night Swim, Blumhouse is back with yet another horror offering. The powerhouse production company just cannot be stopped. With Imaginary now playing in theaters, add "evil teddy bear" and "evil imaginary friend" to the list of subjects Jason Blum has covered across his terrifying projects over the years.
Given these childhood-centered ideas throughout Imaginary, it's no surprise that several of the film's leading characters are children and young adults. DeWanda Wise leads the charge as the new stepmom to a pair of girls, who are played by Taegen Burns and Pyper Braun. We recently caught up with the pair in Los Angeles to learn more about what it takes to get in the zone for shooting a scary movie and some of their other hit projects.

Blumhouse's Imaginary is poised for success despite its lukewarm domestic chart performance. The movie is projected to earn $9.3 million in its opening weekend, landing at No. 3 behind Dune: Part Two and Kung Fu Panda 4. With an estimated budget of $10 million, the movie has already made most of its money back.
Blumhouse's Imaginary is already set for success despite a lukewarm performance on the box office chart. The new movie was directed by Jeff Wadlow, who helmed the previous Blumhouse titles Truth or Dare and Fantasy Island. With a cast that includes DeWanda Wise, Tom Payne, Pyper Braun, and Betty Buckley, the movie follows a woman whose stepdaughter forms an attachment to her old teddy bear Chauncey, though her bond with the supposedly imaginary friend grows more and more violent and disturbing.
Per Deadline, the Imaginary release is currently projected to end its opening weekend with a 3-day domestic total of $9.3 million.

DeWanda Wise shines in Imaginary, but lackluster performances and cheap thrills overwhelm the film overall. The exposition-heavy first act may leave you wanting more intensity from the scares and thrills. Despite potential for a dark new universe, Imaginary's unorganized ending may leave audiences wanting more uniqueness.
Looking at the 2024 box office thus far, Focus Features' recent offering Lisa Frankenstein may have flopped at the box office, but don't be surprised if it sees a resurgence down the line and becomes a sort of cult classic. It was nonstop fun that proved a PG-13 MPAA rating doesn't mean there won't be thrills galore. But with a movie like Night Swim, which also hit the masses earlier this year, perhaps an R rating would have helped boost the end result. The same could be said about another Blumhouse horror film that will be released this Friday.

Pyper Braun as Alice in ‘Imaginary’ (Photo Credit: Parrish Lewis / Lionsgate)
At first glance, it would seem as if Blumhouse’s new horror movie Imaginary is just another killer doll movie along the lines of Child’s Play or Annabelle. And after a watch, that’s pretty much what it is. But with a few twists.
Imaginary is about a children’s book author/illustrator named Jessica (DeWanda Wise from Jurassic World Dominion) who moves into her childhood home with her husband, Max (The Walking Dead’s Tom Payne), and his two girls, the teenaged Taylor (Monarch’s Taegen Burns) and the younger Alice (Desperation Road’s Pyper Braun). Lonely in her new place, Alice immediately makes an imaginary friend named Chauncey who takes the form of a cute little teddy bear. But there’s more to Chauncey than meets the eye – and he has history with Jessica.

They have been known to get us through tough times in our childhoods, but what happens to imaginary friends when we get older and leave them behind for the “real world”? Do they simply vanish, or does some part of them remain, waiting for us to return for a playdate that will never happen? And what if they get impatient while they wait, with their own imagination becoming dark and twisted as the days turn into years and they wait for us to return so that we can be friends forever? These intriguing (and unsettling) questions are explored in the new horror movie Imaginary, a supernatural slice of gateway horror that takes some unexpectedly eerie turns and introduces viewers to Chauncey the Bear, a new horror villain who doesn’t play nice.

Despite poor critical reception, DeWanda Wise defends Chris Pine's directorial debut Poolman with enthusiasm and pride. Wise praises Pine's direction in the specific genre of film noir, highlighting his technical and emotional proficiency. Wise believes that Pine's different appearance in Poolman may have contributed to its negative reception, but she finds him always attractive.
While Chris Pine is beloved for his roles in Wonder Woman, The Princess Diaries, and Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, his directorial debut didn't earn a lot of fans. Premiering at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival, Pine's Poolman follows pool cleaner Darren (Pine), who uncovers a conspiracy and sets out to do whatever he must to protect his precious LA. Despite a talented cast that also features Annette Bening, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Danny DeVito, and DeWanda Wise, the film bombed with critics. It currently holds a 23% Rotten Tomatoes rating, one of the worst scores of Pine's career.

The Curse of Bridge Hollow and Fantasy Island director Jeff Wadlow’s Imaginary adheres to the time-honored tradition of transforming make-believe childhood pals into sinister manifestations that torment their abandoners. Here, a cuddly teddy bear named Chauncey harbors dangerous resentment for being forgotten, igniting a wave of terror for an unsuspecting family. If only that terror extended to the audience experience.
A cold open teases the monstrous imaginary friend via nightmare sequence before introducing the central family unit. Jessica (DeWanda Wise), along with her husband (Tom Payne) and stepchildren Taylor (Taegen Burns) and Alice (Pyper Braun), relocate from their hectic New Orleans apartment to Jessica’s childhood home in the suburbs. Typical growing pains and adjusting to a new town are compounded by dark family histories. Then Alice finds a cute teddy bear named Chauncey in the basement, which will force Jessica to confront painful memories when Alice starts behaving strangely.

With a similar elevator pitch and budget as M3GAN, Jeff Wadlow’s Imaginary is clearly striving to become 2024’s PG-13 horror darling about an evil children’s doll wreaking havoc on a family already in a state of metamorphosis. Regrettably, the filmmakers here have completely abandoned the archness of tone and shades of camp that made M3GAN such an entertaining, if ultimately inconsequential, experience. In place of that film’s knowing playfulness is an overwrought family drama that’s as undercooked as it is painfully familiar.
The blended family at the center of Imaginary consists of comic book artist Jessica (DeWanda Wise), her new husband, Max (Tom Payne), and his two kids from a previous marriage, Taylor (Taegen Burns) and Alice (Pyper Braun). While moody, edgy teenager Taylor constantly gives Jessica the cold shoulder, Alice—much to her big sister’s chagrin—has started to warm up to her stepmom.

DeWanda Wise (Jurassic World Dominion) doesn’t just star in upcoming horror movie Imaginary but executive produces as well. In an interview with Bloody Disgusting, the actor explains what drew her to the project, and she also reveals her personal biggest fear.
Spoiler alert: It’s not a creepy teddy bear coming to life…
DeWanda Wise plays Jessica in the film, but behind the scenes the actor collaborated with director Jeff Wadlow and beyond, including working with costume designer Eulyn Colette Hufkie. Color is important to the world of Imaginary, with blue signaling the imaginary world of the Never Ever. But color was also important to Wise for her character’s wardrobe.

Get ready to meet Chauncey the bear. He’s not imaginary… and he’s not your friend, either. The new horror villain in Imaginary might also be the most high maintenance star on set, at least according to a new interview with the stars.
DeWanda Wise (Jurassic World Dominion) stars in and produces Imaginary, releasing in theaters on March 8, 2024. The upcoming horror film also stars Tom Payne, Taegen Burns, Pyper Braun, Veronica Falcon, and Betty Buckley.
In Imaginary, “Jessica moves back into her childhood home with her family. Her youngest stepdaughter Alice develops an eerie attachment to a stuffed bear named Chauncey she finds in the basement. Alice starts playing games with Chauncey that begin playful and become increasingly sinister. As Alice’s behavior becomes more and more concerning, Jessica intervenes only to realize Chauncey is much more than a stuffed toy bear.”

When they move into their stepmom's (DeWanda Wise) childhood home, a forgotten imaginary friend becomes an all-too-real nightmare for sisters Taylor (Taegen Burns) and Alice (Pyper Braun), and they must rely on each other and their stepmom to save themselves from the wrath of the seemingly cute (but seriously creepy) teddy bear Chauncey and the other versions of the Entity that seeks to destroy their family in the new horror movie Imaginary.
Ahead of its March 8th theatrical release via Lionsgate and Blumhouse, Daily Dead had the great pleasure of talking with actors Taegen Burns and Pyper Braun (as well as their co-star Chauncey the Bear) to discuss the making of Imaginary, including what drew them to play their intriguing characters, interacting with Chauncey on set, working with the film's impressive practical effects (especially during a very eerie scene with teddy bear eye applications), and collaborating with DeWanda Wise and director Jeff Wadlow.

Director Jeff Wadlow and producer Jason Blum bring a terrifying twist to the idea of an imaginary friend in this horror movie. Practical effects bring the terrifying Never Ever space to life, creating a visually chilling experience for viewers.

Horror movies have a fan base just as loyal and rabid as those of the MCU or Star Wars franchises. The only difference is that horror has dozens of beloved franchises and a constant stream of new properties to keep the faithful going. 2024 looks to be a terrifyingly fun year with many anticipated sequels and intriguing fresh ideas hitting the theaters.
The studios love horror movies because they are generally cheaper to make and almost always deliver a big return. Audiences love horror movies because there is a perverse human quality that enjoys being scared and repulsed. This year promises to thrill and mortify fans with a full slate of reliable favorites and daring new twisted tales.

Rebel Moon Part One: A Child of Fire (read our review Here), the first part of director Zack Snyder’s two-part sci-fi epic, has been available to watch on the Netflix streaming service for over a month, and now we’re getting ready for the April 19th release of the follow-up Rebel Moon Part Two: The Scargiver. With its release date just two months away, Rebel Moon Part Two has received its official rating from the Motion Picture Association ratings board: PG-13 for sequences of strong violence, brief strong language and suicide. Also earning a PG-13 rating this week is the Blumhouse horror film Imaginary, which reaches theatres on March 8th. Imaginary got its PG-13 for some violent content, drug material and language.
Neither one of these ratings comes as a surprise. Many Blumhouse movies, from Insidious to Five Nights at Freddy’s, M3GAN, and Night Swim have PG-13 ratings. As for Rebel Moon,...

"Do you want a friend who will never leave your side?" A childhood imaginary friend returns with a vengeance that's all too real when it inhabits a stuffed teddy bear named Chauncey in the new trailer for the upcoming Blumhouse horror movie Imaginary, coming to theaters on March 8th via Lionsgate.
Below, you can experience the chilling new trailer for Imaginary, and here's what director/co-writer Jeff Wadlow had to say about making the new movie:
“Not all imaginary friends are friendly… at least that’s what the characters at the heart of Imaginary are about to find out. I love making films that play with the audience's perception of what is real and what is not, so a horror movie that explores the frightening possibilities of imaginary friends was the perfect sandbox for me to play in. They only come along every once in a blue moon: the dueling movies. 1998 was an especially unusual year in that it saw two of them hitting theaters, with killer asteroid films "Deep Impact" and "Armageddon" going head-to-head within the same 12-month span as the animated insect flicks "Antz" and "A Bug's Life." There haven't been too many since then, save for the clash of the White House action-thrillers in 2013 with "Olympus Has Fallen" and "White House Down." Now, 2024 is bringing us the next big showdown between movies with remarkably similar premises.
The unexpected shared theme? Imaginary friends.
Okay, fine, so John Krasinski's family-friendly "If" and Jeff Wadlow's horror thriller "Imaginary" seem to have almost nothing in common besides revolving around children's imaginary pals. Nevertheless, there's no denying it's a little strange that we're getting two films based on that exact same premise in quick succession. The former of...

We’re just one month away from the March 8th theatrical release date of the horror film Imaginary, the latest team-up between Blumhouse and director Jeff Wadlow – who had previously collaborated on the 2018 film Truth or Dare and the 2020 horror version of Fantasy Island. With that date swiftly approaching, a new trailer for Imaginary has arrived online, and you can check it out in the embed above.
The film sees DeWanda Wise of Jurassic World: Dominion taking on the role of Jessica, who moves back into her childhood home with her family, and her youngest stepdaughter Alice develops an eerie attachment to a stuffed bear named Chauncey. Alice starts playing games with Chauncey that become increasingly sinister. As Alice’s behavior becomes more concerning, Jessica intervenes, only to realize Chauncey is much more than the stuffed toy bear she believes him to be.
Wadlow wrote the screenplay for Imaginary with Greg Erb and Jason Oremland.

Come out, come out, wherever you are — Chauncey the Teddy Bear wants to play.
The latest installment of Blumhouse’s creepy toys gone astray horror subgenre, “Imaginary” centers on a decades-spanning story of a (possibly) demonic stuffed animal that torments both mother and stepdaughter.
DeWanda Wise stars as Jessica, a mom who moves back into her childhood home, where she is reunited with her old teddy bear. Her stepdaughter Alice (Pyper Braun) has an eerie link to the toy, however, forcing Jessica to reexamine her own traumatic past. Or is it just all in Jessica’s head?
The official synopsis reads: “When Jessica (Wise) moves back into her childhood home with her family, her youngest stepdaughter Alice (Pyper Braun) develops an eerie attachment to a stuffed bear named Chauncey she finds in the basement. Alice starts playing games with Chauncey that begin playful and become increasingly sinister. As Alice’s...

Not only do Blumhouse productions tend to have such low budgets that it’s difficult for them to fail, but the company also makes so much content that you never go too long without seeing a new release from them. So if one disappoints, they have another chance to impress soon after. The Exorcist: Believer wasn’t well-received? That’s okay, Five Nights at Freddy’s is right around the corner. Night Swim didn’t live up to the success they had with M3GAN last year? Well, let’s see how Imaginary does on March 8th. With the release of Imaginary just one month away, a new poster for the film has arrived online and can be seen at the bottom of this article.

Blumhouse's "Imaginary" and John Krasinski's "If" share the same premise but have different tones and conflicts. "Imaginary" explores the sinister side of the connection between children and imaginary friends, while "If" takes a lighter and family-friendly approach. Despite their similarities, "Imaginary" and "If" will face off in a box office battle in 2024, with only one film expected to come out on top.
Among 2024’s confirmed theatrical releases are a new Blumhouse horror movie that shares the same premise as John Krasinski’s family-friendly If, and will be released within just a couple of weeks between them. Blumhouse has become one of the top studios in the horror genre in recent years, and it will continue bringing a variety of horror stories in 2024, starting with Imaginary. Directed by Jeff Wadlow, Imaginary is a supernatural horror movie starring DeWanda Wise and Pyper Braun, and viewers won’t have to wait too...
