After The Shawshank Redemption, Morgan Freeman Starred In An Awful Stephen King Movie
Image
On the DVD special features for Lawrence Kasdan's 2003 psychic sci-fi hodgepodge "Dreamcatcher," author Stephen King talks a little bit about how he came to write the 2001 novel on which it was based. He said that he had recently been severely injured in a car accident, and later admitted that he was under the influence of Oxycontin while writing the novel. King also noted that "Dreamcatcher" was supposed to be -- at least in part -- about exploring taboos. King felt that all sexual taboos had been covered by literature, stating that the bedroom door had already been opened. The bathroom door, though, he felt was still closed. The bathroom is where one explored their most personal and disgusting habits, King said, and it was high time he explored that.

As such, there's a scene in "Dreamcatcher" (both the novel and the movie) wherein a character named Beav (Jason Lee) is sitting on a toilet,...

‘Havoc’ Is Now One of Tom Hardy’s Lowest-Rated Movies As the Rotten Tomatoes Score Continues To Plummet
Image
Tom Hardy’s new action movie, Havoc, has only been streaming on Netflix for a couple of weeks, but it has been anything but well-received by general audiences. After debuting with a solid critics' score on Rotten Tomatoes, it seemed like Havoc was heading in the right direction, but fans have been much harsher on the film than reviewers. Hardy’s Havoc finished last week with a 40% score from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, which has since dropped to 37%, which makes it one of Hardy’s 10 lowest-rated movies ever. While the film was promoted as a bone-crunching, no-holds-barred action thriller, audiences have criticized the weak writing of the characters and overuse of CGI during fight scenes that detracts from any realistic feel.

Havoc was written and directed by Gareth Evans, who is best known for his work on The Raid: Redemption and its sequel, The Raid 2. Evans also recently worked on...

'Havoc' Director Says Tom Hardy Asked Him About a Sequel to the Netflix Action Hit
Image
The following contains spoilers for Havoc.Director Gareth Evans entered the Netflix arena with the high-octane ultraviolent offering that is the recently released Havoc. Starring Tom Hardy, the film impressed action fans across the globe, who reconnected with the director's peculiar manner of executing the genre. Naturally, the next question that comes to mind is whether Havoc could get a sequel, and, per Evans' claims, the most important player at the moment is open to returning. Hardy has asked Evans about a sequel and even juggled some ideas for the director to consider.

Evans sat down with The Playlist for their podcast The Discourse, and he shared a few details about the Netflix movie that also stars Forest Whitaker and Timothy Olyphant. The director highlighted how he bonded with the actor, and he revealed that Hardy's Mad Max: Fury Road may have been a strong inspiration for the movie:

Netflix Action-Thriller With Only 37% Audience Score Beats Tom Hardy's New Film in the Charts in Just 1 Day
Image
Netflix might have gained popularity as a studio with popular series like Stranger Things, Wednesday, and Bridgerton, but the streamer has also focused on giving a platform to foreign titles. After Squid Game's undeniable success, Netflix further branched out with many new foreign films and TV shows that were extremely popular online.

Netflix non-English language movies have received millions of views in the past year, with Under Paris reaching the top of the charts, and being joined in the Top 10 list by this year's French action movie Ad Vitam and Mexican military film Counterattack. It also found success with titles like Revelations, the Swedish limited series The Glass Dome and the Dutch thriller iHostage. Now, the bilingual German-English action thriller Exterritorial beat Tom Hardy's Havoc to the top of the charts after just one day on the platform, per FlixPatrol.

Exterritorial premiered on Netflix on Apr. 30, just five days after Havoc.

Takashi Shimizu
This Terrifying J-Horror Remake Is Now Streaming For Free!
Takashi Shimizu
The early aughts launched a wave of horror remakes, but they’re especially known as an era full of American remakes of Japanese horror classics. One such adaptation is Takashi Shimizu‘s 2004 film, The Grudge, based on the Japanese film Ju-On: The Grudge, which Shimizu directed in 2002. It’s not often the original director is brought on for the American adaptation, so this is a fascinating film even for just that reason.

In the film, “An American nurse living and working in Tokyo is exposed to a mysterious supernatural curse, one that locks a person in a powerful rage before claiming their life and spreading to another victim.“

The Grudge stars horror icon Sarah Michelle Gellar, as well as Jason Behr (Roswell) and Clea DuVall (The Faculty). It was a massive hit upon release, raking in a reported $187.3 million on a $10 million budget. It was released when I was a kid,...

Forest Whitaker, Tom Hardy, Timothy Olyphant, Sunny Pang, and Jessie Mei Li in Havoc (2025)
Havoc Review
Forest Whitaker, Tom Hardy, Timothy Olyphant, Sunny Pang, and Jessie Mei Li in Havoc (2025)
In Havoc, director Gareth Evans (The Raid) returns to the gritty terrain he knows best in his new Netflix produced action thriller, Havoc. In the film, Tom Hardy stars as Walker, a troubled cop caught in a desperate search for a missing politician’s son amid a seedy underworld riddled with betrayal, corruption, and bone-crunching violence.

Written by Evans, the film begins with an almost mundane errand: Walker scouring a convenience store for a last-minute gift for his daughter. It’s a quiet introduction to a man on edge, and Hardy is once again, all in. But as flashbacks reveal his involvement in a botched drug operation, the layers of his guilt and rage begin to surface, propelling him into a present-day mission to find Charlie (Justin Cornwell), who vanishes after his own deal goes sideways.

Evans, known for the kinetic chaos of The Raid and the sprawling crime epic Gangs of London,...

The #1 Most-Watched Movie on Netflix Today Is an Action-Packed Highly Violent Thriller
Image
Netflix debuted the new action thriller Havoc last Friday. And the film has already established itself as the most-watched title on the platform in the days since. Judging from the marketing materials, Havoc looks like a gritty actioner that throws back to the exploitation output of yesteryear. Critics are already drawing comparisons to early John Woo, with many praising the fight choreography and dynamic action sequences.

Havoc writer/director Gareth Evans came onto our collective radar with the scrappy action picture The Raid: Redemption and from there he went on to write and co-direct the V/H/S/2 segment ‘Safe Haven.’

Evans is quickly making a name for himself in the genre space. On many of his projects, he takes a producing credit, a writing credit, and a directing credit. Having a role in multiple steps of the filmmaking process is a good way to maintain a higher level of creative control.

Tom Hardy's Havoc's Rotten Tomatoes Score Hinted the Audience Hated the Film (But It's a Hit on Streaming)
Image
Tom Hardy is having a great year. After wrapping up the Venom trilogy in 2024, the actor had two projects that headed straight to streaming and both experienced exciting success on different platforms.

The most recent release is Netflix's action thriller Havoc, which follows the successful Paramount+ series MobLand. Gareth Evans of The Raid fame wrote and directed Havoc, which starred Hardy, Timothy Olyphant, and Forest Whitaker in the main roles. Although the movie opened to mixed reviews from the critics and even worse ratings from the audience,Havoc undeniably became a major hit on Netflix, topping the charts in its first week, per Tudum.

Havoc premiered on Netflix on Apr. 25, and had only two days to make an impact before the streamer stopped the clocks. That makes its viewership even more impressive because, for the week between Apr. 21 and 27, Havoc received 29.8 million views, and 53.1 million hours viewed.

Havoc entered the top 10 in 93 countries,...

Forest Whitaker, Tom Hardy, Timothy Olyphant, Sunny Pang, and Jessie Mei Li in Havoc (2025)
Havoc tops Netflix’s streaming charts with a better debut than The Electric State
Forest Whitaker, Tom Hardy, Timothy Olyphant, Sunny Pang, and Jessie Mei Li in Havoc (2025)
Gareth Evans’ Havoc has been a long time coming, but the wait has been well worth it. The hard-hitting action thriller has topped Netflix’s streaming charts with 29.8 million views. This makes the film the most-watched title of the week, but it has also beaten some of Netflix’s more high-profile recent releases, including The Electric State.

The Electric State was a highly anticipated sci-fi adventure movie from the Russo brothers starring Millie Bobby Brown and Chris Pratt. With a budget of $320 million, it was also one of the most expensive movies ever made. However, although the film debuted at Netflix’s #1 spot, it did so with just 25.2 million views. As Havoc was produced for a fraction of the budget of The Electric State, it’s certainly a lot more bang for the buck. Other recent action flicks also performed better in their debuts, including Carry On with 42 million views...

Released in 2011 to both critical and commercial acclaim, The Raid was followed by The Raid 2 (also known as The Raid: Retaliation) in 2014, which met with similar success. Since then, fans have eagerly awaited a third installment to complete the trilogy. Though Evans developed a script several years ago, the project never materialized. Now, more than a decade after the last film, Evans continues to ruminate on new ideas he could take the film, recently teasing that a trilogy could still become a reality.

Since The Raid 2, Evans has continued to leave his mark on Hollywood. Renowned for putting Indonesia's pencak silat martial arts on the global map, the action maestro...

Alien: Earth teasers set up five deadly alien species (and give me hope the series will be awesome)
Image
This summer, FX and Hulu will debut the latest entry in the iconic sci-fi horror franchise Alien. Titled Alien: Earth, this will be the Xenomorph's first television series, It's set in the year 2120, around two years before the original 1979 film starring Sigourney Weaver. And as the name implies, this time around, the action will take place on Earth itself.

I've had some reservations about how that might work in the larger context of the franchise, which often revolves around how utterly essential it is to keep the invasive Xenomorphs from ever reaching the human home planet. But with each new glimpse of Alien: Earth we get, those fears become quieter.

And we're getting quite a few glimpses at the moment, because FX and Hulu dropped a slew of new teaser trailers over the week. The largest of the bunch dropped on April 26, also known as Alien Day in the fandom...

Tom Hardy’s 'Havoc' Accent Gets a Mixed Response From Netflix Viewers
Image
After waiting four, long years, action movie fans had reason to celebrate this weekend as the Tom Hardy-led Netflix thriller, Havoc, was released at last. However, while many have quickly found themselves wonderfully wrapped up in Hardy and The Raid director Gareth Evans’ bullet-ridden tale of a bruised detective forced to battle his way into the criminal underworld, there is one thing that stood out to many viewers. And it’s been met with a mixed response...

Oscar-nominee Tom Hardy has become known for his hardman persona and intensity on-screen. But there’s something else he’s become somewhat infamous for too: accents. Whether it be mumbling through Mad Max: Fury Road and The Revenant, delivering something highly unexpected vocally with Bane in The Dark Knight Rises, or providing two very different voices as Eddie Brock and Venom in the Marvel franchise, Hardy loves to do a voice. Havoc is no different,...

Havoc Movie Cast And Characters Guide
Image
Eight years after his last feature, Director Gareth Evans has returned to his favorite crime action genre with Netflix’s Havoc, a no-nonsense kill-or-be-killed venture that fires on all cylinders to deliver a memorable, bone-crushing, blood-splattering action spectacle. Aside from that, what makes Havoc really special amidst the director’s filmography is that there is a distinct pulp-noir style quotient evoked by the visuals, with all the elements of grunge, smoke, and darkness capturing the essence of corruption, a kind of world-building usually seen when characters like Batman or the Shadow are involved. The characterization, much like the plot details, is very simplistic—in most cases not that much developed, but it is enough to provide justification to the maddening violence and bloodshed, which makes viewers forget about any possible drawbacks anyway. There is some solid star power in the ensemble cast of Havoc, a discussion of which can’t...

5 Walton Goggins Movies & TV Shows The White Lotus Fans Need To Watch
Image
Like every season of the hit HBO Mike White series "The White Lotus," the Thailand-set third season featured some terrific character actors giving scene-stealing turns as some of the show's most over-the-top characters yet. One of season 3's biggest standouts was Walton Goggins as Rick Hatchett, a visitor to The White Lotus on a quest for vengeance, and the fact that he was a standout should come as no real surprise to fans of the charismatic actor. Over his career thus far, Goggins has made a name for himself by completely disappearing into his roles and giving them his all, no matter how big or small the part. One has to look no further than his guest spot on the NBC sitcom "Community" to understand his incredible talent for committing to the bit. Heck, he even pushed past his own severe phobia of snakes to shoot a terrifying scene in "The White Lotus,...

Alien: Earth Teaser Reveals That The Xenomorph Will Be Joined By Four New "Monsters"
Image
Happy Alien Day!

Two new teasers for Noah Hawley's Alien: Earth have been released online. One spotlights the gestation cycle of a Xenomorph (in graphic detail), while the other reveals that the iconic acid-blooded beasts are not the only extraterrestrial threat our planet will face in the series!

According to the voiceover, “five different lifeforms from the darkest corners of the universe — each one a unique, deadly species” were chosen to bring back to Earth for study (never a good idea).

We don't get a proper look at the other lifeforms in the crates, but this doesn't sound like five different variations or subspecies of Xenomorph. A group of brand-new alien creatures would certainly prove to be an intriguing and unexpected addition to this series.

Check out the promos below along with a new poster, and let us know what you think in the comments section.

Incoming report from Weyland-Yutani: Critical Gestation Complete.

Tom Hardy's New Netflix Film With 66% Rt Score Fails to Improve the Audience (It Will Still Be a Streaming Hit)
Image
Following the culmination of his Venom trilogy, Tom Hardy entered a very eventful 2025: the release of his gangster series, MobLand, and the recently released Netflix action film, Havoc. The latter has been in development for a long time, with several reshoots, but it still wasn't enough to convince the audience.

Havoc premiered on Netflix on Apr. 25. The action film, with Gareth Evans at the helm, debuted with a disappointing score of 61% on Rotten Tomatoes from the critics, which was barely enough for a "fresh" score. However, as more reviews came in,Havoc's critics' score slightly improved to 66%, but as the audience started reviewing it, they were less and less impressed, as Hardy's new film has an unfortunate 49% approval from the audience.

While the critics praised Havoc's action and fight sequences and directorial style, the audience was less impressed. One review highlights that Havoc "tries to be too many things at once,...

Havoc Review: Gareth Evans’ Brutal Ballet
Image
Havoc plunges us into an unnamed city where rain never ceases and danger lurks around every neon-lit corner. During one violent Christmas Eve, Gareth Evans returns to the world of uncompromising action, trading the claustrophobic apartment tower of The Raid for a sprawling urban battlefield.

At its center is Walker (Tom Hardy), a detective whose badge feels heavier than his conscience. He’s paired with Ellie (Jessie Mei Li), a beat cop whose idealism clashes with his war-weary pragmatism. Their mission—rescuing Charlie (Justin Cornwell) and Mia (Quelin Sepulveda), two civilians caught in a botched triad operation—serves as both catalyst and excuse for an escalating chain of set pieces.

Evans cloaks the story in classic noir trappings: slick reflections on wet pavement, long shadows, and whispery voice-over that hints at regret and shattered morality. Yet the film refuses to stay in one stylistic lane, weaving sudden bursts of slow-motion brutality with guerrilla-style camerawork.

In space, no one can hear you scream. But on Earth? We’re going to find out, as Alien: Earth is landing on Hulu/Disney+ this year. And to amp up the excitement, we have a new teaser and key art.

‘Havoc’ Director Has Heard Your Complaints Against Tom Hardy Shooting but Has a Genius Explanation for It
Image
The director of The Raid movies has come up with another action thriller, this time on Netflix. Tom Hardy’s Havoc is an out-and-out action thriller from Gareth Evans, with bullets flying all over the place. For the fans of such high-octane thrillers, Havoc is super exciting to watch. However, if you’re someone who’ll nit-pick every detail in a movie, you might be disappointed at some of the scenes.

While Evans knew that he would disappoint such moviegoers, he still proceeded to exaggerate the number of bullets flying. However, if you really need an explanation, Evans has a logic behind those scenes. The director couldn’t help but include those gunfight scenes, which are a clear influence of Hong Kong films and filmmakers like Johnnie To, John Woo, and Ringo Lam.

Gareth Evan knew fans would complain about Havoc’s gunfight scenes Tom Hardy as Patrick Walker in...

New Grisly Teaser for ‘Alien: Earth’ Unleashes Terror Ahead of FX/Hulu Summer Premiere!

Alien: Earth is one of the most exciting sci-fi releases this summer. The series is a prequel to the classic 1979 Alien movie and takes place two years before it. Created by Noah Hawley, the show will stream on FX on Hulu and stars Sydney Chandler, Timothy Olyphant, and more.

In the story, a spaceship crashes on Earth, leading a young woman and a team of soldiers to a shocking discovery, one that puts all of humanity in danger.

A new teaser for the show has been released and showcases, in great detail, if I may add, Xenomorph’s gestation and its imminent release.

It's time to get (back) to that galaxy far, far away.

This week, Andor, the Rogue One prequel created by Tony Gilroy, returns for its highly anticipated second season, more than two years after the show's acclaimed debut. Unfortunately, it is also the show's final season, as the 2023 Emmy nominee for Best Drama Series is quickly hurtling toward the climactic events of Rogue One, and thus also the events of A New Hope. Diego Luna returns as rebel spy Cassian Andor in the new season, which centers on a planet unlucky enough to house mineral deposits the Empire needs.

Jessie Mei Li Talks ‘Havoc’, Tom Hardy and How ‘Shadow and Bone’ Set Up Her Career: “I’ve Got a Lot of Characters in Me That Need to Come Out”
Image
Jessie Mei Li is, admittedly, a little shy. So when Netflix’s hit fantasy adaptation of Leigh Bardugo’s bestselling Shadow and Bone series presented her to the world in the show’s lead role, the star was quickly overwhelmed.

“I’d gone from being just Jessie Mei from Redhill to suddenly being recognized,” she tells The Hollywood Reporter. “I was like, ‘I don’t know if this is for me.'”

But, thanks to the close bonds cultivated with her fellow cast members as they filmed on the streets of Budapest, Li managed to adapt. She’s staying put in showbiz, and now finds herself as Hardy’s right-hand man in the streaming giant’s newest action thriller Havoc.

Released on Netflix on Apr. 25, Gareth Evans’ Havoc stars Hardy as jaded detective Walker Mackey working in Hong Kong. After a drug deal goes awry, he must fight his way...
