He was the very first act to be signed on by Virgin Records, when the company was launched by Richard Branson. Oldfield's "Tubular Bells", Virgin's first release, went on to become a multi-million seller abetted, in no small part, by the fact that it became inexorably linked to the box office hit movie, The Exorcist (1973).
