It’s been a few years since Sons of Anarchy creator Kurt Sutter first announced The Abandons, but the Western series has finally started shooting. Netflix announced the start of production of the first season of The Abandons in Calgary, with an official cast photo seen above.
The official logline for The Abandons reads: “As a group of diverse, outlier families pursue their Manifest Destiny in 1850s Oregon, a corrupt force of wealth and power, coveting their land, tries to force them out. These abandoned souls, the kind of lost souls living on the fringe of society, unite their tribes to form a family and fight back. In this bloody process, ‘justice’ is stretched beyond the boundaries of the law. The Abandons will explore that fine line between survival and law, the consequences of violence, and the corrosive power of secrets, as this family fights to keep their land.“

Dir: Sebastián Lelio. Starring: Florence Pugh, Tom Burke, Kíla Lord Cassidy, Elaine Cassidy, Caolán Byrne, Niamh Algar, Toby Jones, Ciarán Hinds. 15, 108 minutes.
Watching The Wonder on Netflix, you’ll think you’ve clicked on the wrong film. The beguiling period drama starring Florence Pugh opens not in Ireland’s boglands as promised by the trailer, but in the harsh light of a film studio. A disembodied voice (Niamh Algar’s) will reassure you that this is indeed The Wonder. The voice continues: “The people you are about to meet, the characters, believe in their stories with complete devotion. We are nothing without stories. So we invite you to believe in this one.”
It’s an odd, and already critically divisive, beginning. The film sees director Sebastián Lelio and screenwriter Alice Birch (known for her work on Succession and Normal People) take on Emma Donoghue’s 2016 novel of the same name.

This review originally ran September 2, 2022, in conjunction with the film’s world premiere at the Telluride Film Festival.
You’ll need to have faith in your core to be swept away by Sebastián Lelio’s lovely and elegiac “The Wonder,” a mournful and textured psychodrama that gently nurses one into hope and spiritual serenity.
But not a religious kind of faith, to be clear: You’ll just need to believe in, or at least gradually come to accept, the power of stories as a means of survival.
A deeply feminine tale of fortitude with heart and teeth, “The Wonder” (making its world premiere at the 2022 Telluride Film Festival) hints at this very suggestion right at the start — perhaps a tad too expressly — and opens on what looks like a contemporary film stage. As the camera pans, it unveils the yarn’s eventual setting, the impoverished Irish Midlands of the 19th Century,...

The Wonder is a movie directed by Sebastián Lelio starring Florence Pugh and Tom Burke.
An intriguing story, with complex characterizations, in this well developed screenplay. Add to that the good performances and the atmospherics of a good scenography, and you have one of the month’s best movies.
Premise The Wonder (2022)
It is 1862, after the Great Famine, Lib Wright, a nurse, leaves England for Ireland to observe what some see as a medical anomaly and others a miracle, namely, that a girl, Anna, has survived without food for months. In a remote cottage, Lib must watch over the girl in shifts, alternating with a nun, appeasing the town inhabitants who are skeptical of science. Tourists flock to see 11-year-old Anna O’Donnell, and a journalist has come to cover the sensation as two strangers transform each other’s lives in a story of love pitted against evil.

As Anna’s health rapidly deteriorates, Lib is determined to unearth the truth, challenging the faith of a community that would prefer to stay believing.

Florence Pugh has established herself as one of our most compelling actresses in a relatively short period of time, with awards-worthy performances in movies like "Little Women" and "Midsommar." But it's not just "Don't Worry Darling" that will give Pugh the spotlight this year as she is also headlining "The Wonder" for Netflix, which looks to be an atmospheric, mystery-filled thriller set in the 1800s just to add to the whole thing.
What happens when a nurse is brought in to investigate a young girl who won't eat during a time when people are generally hyper-religious and not far removed from famine? Things get creepy. Let's have a look.
The Wonder Trailer Brings The Mysterious, Creepy Vibes
Having not seen the film, the vibes I'm getting ring closer to "The Witch" or perhaps something like "It Comes at Night." Atmospheric horror/thriller vibes, rather than something packed with jump scares.

On paper, Sebastián Lelio’s The Wonder sounds like a prime contender for awards season. It’s a period piece set in 19th-century Ireland, adapted from a book by Emma Donoghue (whose 2015 adaptation of her book Room nabbed her an Oscar nomination), directed by an Oscar winner, shot by The Power of the Dog Dp Ari Wegner, and led by the massively talented Florence Pugh. It only takes one minute before the film breaks the fourth wall and any preconceived notions as to what it might be, with Pugh introducing herself over footage of a movie set. She explains we’re about to watch a story with characters who have strong beliefs, and asks a favor of the viewer: “We are nothing without stories, so we invite you to believe in this one.” It’s definitely a choice by Lelio—sadly the only interesting one in his film.

Exclusive: Josh Radnor (Hunters), Annie Parisse (Friends from College) and Nuala Cleary (The Crowded Room) will topline the period drama Three Birthdays from writer-director Jane Weinstock (The Moment), which has wrapped production. Other actors set for the pic include Jasmine Batchelor (New Amsterdam), Uly Schlesinger (Generation), Gus Birney (Shining Vale), Guy Burnet (Oppenheimer), Annie McNamara (Severance) and Dolly Wells (Doll & Em).
In the indie set in 1970, Radnor and Parisse star as college professor parents to a rebellious 16-year-old played by Cleary. Against the backdrop of the sexual revolution and increasingly violent demonstrations against the war in Vietnam, each member of this nuclear family struggles to reconcile the political with the personal. The film’s producers are Andrea Miller, Chris Collins and James Welling.
Radnor is an actor and filmmaker who currently stars opposite Al Pacino in the Amazon series Hunters, from executive producer Jordan Peele. He is otherwise best known...

Where to Watch “Mildred Pierce”: HBO Max
For me, the moment when “Mildred Pierce” really comes alive is when Mildred, after a shift as a waitress, takes stock of the kitchen. Changed back into her regular clothes, she surveys the pantry and the supply area, taking surreptitious notes on what it takes to put together a place where people want to eat.
Todd Haynes’ five-part HBO limited series is certainly about more than food. With Kate Winslet shining in the title role, there’s plenty of threaded ideas about obligations to family, the limits of trust, and the nature of being independent. Here, though, the kitchen becomes a stronghold, a place where Mildred can reclaim the parts of her life that are slipping away or have tragically disappeared altogether.
It starts with the pies. From the opening shot, as big band music bounces in the background,...
