With the papal conclave meeting last week, Stephen Colbert brought in an expert on the subject who also happens to be a classic Saturday Night Live character. Father Guido Sarducci (Don Novello) graced the Ed Sullivan Theater on The Late Show last week, delivering his traditionally offbeat predictions, none of which actually came to pass. Colbert is a famously devout Catholic, but he clearly doesn't have any problem poking a little fun at the church.
The chain-smoking Sarducci came out looking for an ashtray: although Colbert insisted that he couldn't smoke on network television, Sarducci told him that current Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. had decreed that menthols were okay, and also good for polio. He also offered his opinions on the movie Conclave: he wishes it was animated, because if the cardinals had moved like Sonic the Hedgehog, it would have been half an hour shorter.

After retreating from the public eye for nearly 15 years, Father Guido Sarducci appeared on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert last night to share his insights on the election of the new Pope. As the senior gossip columnist for the Vatican newspaper, a one-time Saturday Night Live regular and the alter ego of comedian/writer Don Novello, Sarducci is uniquely positioned to comment on the conclave happening in Rome to anoint a successor to Pope Francis.
Colbert reviewed some of the favorites for the job, such as Pierbattista Pizzaballa and Luis Antonio Tagle. But Sarducci says it’s anybody’s ball game at this point. “There’s a number of frontrunners, but anyone could get it,” he offered.
As proof, Sarducci pointed to a controversial conclave in the 1750s. “For months, they would have 90 ballots. These guys just want to go home, but they can’t pick anybody,” he explained.

“Life is like a box of chocolates… you never know what you’re gonna get,” said Forrest Gump. This sentiment rings true when it comes to movies, too.
We mean, we’re talking about those days where you hop from one adventure to the next, with no map nor plan, just following the flow like a leaf in the wind. Now, imagine that kind of unpredictable thrill happening right from the comfort of your couch. If movies were a ride, this list would be the kind that keeps you buckled in tight, taking you from soul-stirring drama to mind-bending sci-fi, all in a single night. There is no need for a parachute or seatbelt, though—just a bucket of popcorn and a TV remote.

Okay, so maybe that’s not exactly how MCU’s Doctor Strange would explain it, but you get the gist.

Fresh after taking home his second Academy Award for Best Actor, Deadline reports that Adrien Brody is considering taking on a role in Damien Chazelle’s Evel Knievel On Tour, which has Leonardo DiCaprio in negotiations to star. However, the report states that discussions are still in the very early stages, and nothing will happen until DiCaprio’s deal closes.
THR adds that Brody could be up for the role of Shelly Saltman, the “author and sports promoter who was viciously attacked by Knievel by an aluminum bat.” Chazelle and DiCaprio have been working on the project for quite some time, and production could even get underway this summer, assuming a deal can be reached with DiCaprio. William Monahan (The Departed) has written the script.

If you’re among those who expect an actor or director’s career to explode after their Oscar wins, then you’ve clearly never heard of the so-called “Oscar curse”. Hot off the pavement from recent wins at the Golden Globes and Critics Choice Awards, Adrian Brody remains the blueprint. The actor, who first scored a Best Actor win in 2003 for The Piano, snagged his second Best Actor Oscar win for Brady Corbet’s The Brutalist on Sunday.
Speaking backstage to press at the Oscars, Brody reflected on the impact of his role during the current political climate, “I think we all know that it’s an important time to recognize that there’s no place for intolerance. I’m oddly receiving recognition for representing a time in history where we witness racism and oppression … [we] must learn from the past.”

“The Brutalist” tells the story of Holocaust survivor and Hungarian-born Jewish architect, László Tóth, played by Adrien Brody. The movie, which is directed by Brady Corbet and produced by Corbet and Mona Fastvold, is not based on a true story.

Another film dominating conversations is Emilia Pérez.

The Brutalist heads into Sunday’s Oscars ceremony as one of 2024’s most acclaimed films, an epic piece of filmmaking that earned 10 Oscar nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director for Brady Corbet. However, while the film was once considered the Best Picture favorite, its best bets for Oscar glory on Sunday are in other categories: Best Score, Best Cinematography, and presumably Best Actor. Or at least so it appeared before the Screen Actors Guild Awards, when A Complete Unknown star Timothée Chalamet pulled off the upset win over The Brutalist lead — and season-long frontrunner — Adrien Brody. With Chalamet’s surprise SAG win, how worried should Brody be about a Timothée triumph at the Academy Awards?

Brady Corbet’s epic period drama film, The Brutalist, has come into the discussion once more following its being nominated in a number of categories for the upcoming Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Direction. The film, which is a little shy of three and a half hours long, follows the life of a Hungarian-Jewish architect who moves to the United States of America with rejuvenated hopes and dreams after surviving the Holocaust. The Brutalist is strongly driven by the exceptional performances, and also the overall cinematography, making it a truly marvelous film to catch on 70mm, as intended by the makers.
Spoiler Alert
What is the film about?
The Brutalist begins with scenes of a young woman being dragged into an interrogation room by some unseen soldiers, who then repeatedly ask questions about her residence in Budapest and about her relation to a different woman. This other woman,...

Considering its lengthy runtime, The Brutalist doesn’t indulge in overt and lengthy exposition. Instead, it acts as an unfiltered portrayal of László Toth’s (Adrien Brody) life and encourages the audience to decipher the subtext. This format allows the movie to serve as a metaphor for hidden discrimination and how people’s actions and motivations don’t always align. This is certainly the case for Harrison Lee Van Buren (Guy Pearce), the eccentric business tycoon who takes László in and funds his architecture. On the surface, Van Buren appears as pleasant and welcoming, but small microaggressions flood the pair’s dynamic, suggesting his motivations center around control. Their relationship is uncomfortable to watch, yet there is one particularly devastating scene that sees Harrison rape an intoxicated László. The impact of the scene only serves to reiterate what the movie has already portrayed but does so in an extremely horrific...

"The way that I work is to bring in extraordinary artists... and create situations where they can be free." A24 has debuted a new "making of" featurette for Brady Corbet's The Brutalist, focusing on the score and composer Daniel Blumberg. This exceptional score is nominated for an Academy Award this year and this video is being released during voting, in hopes of convincing more people to vote for it. The film already opened last year but considering it's one of the best films of the decade (including this score), happy to feature this video for an inside look at what went into making it. When visionary architect László Toth & his wife Erzsébet flee Europe in 1947 to rebuild their legacy and witness the birth of modern America, their lives are changed forever by an extremely wealthy benefactor - a man named Harrison Lee Van Buren Sr. Made by director Brady Corbet,...

Way back in Saturday Night Live’s seventh season, Bill Murray went on live television and told America that the Ussr had raided Poland. A few people in the audience laughed, but Murray assured them he was serious. “I guess that means this is World War III,” Murray said according to Ultimate Classic Rock.
That bleak goodnight message is still on the edited Peacock version of the episode. “We’ve had a very good time tonight here in the studio,” began a somber Murray, surrounded by cast members decked out in Christmas sweatshirts and stocking caps. “But what all of us don’t know and what we’ve just found out is that the members of the Solidarity in Poland were all arrested and the country’s been taken over by the Soviets.”
The crowd chuckled uneasily, unsure if the invasion announcement was a War of the Worlds-style bit. Murray...

Brady Corbet was "concerned" about the reception ‘The Brutalist’ would receive because it is such a "divisive" film. The 36-year-old filmmaker’s post-World War II drama has attracted rave reviews and a string of nominations at the Oscars, BAFTA Awards and other major ceremonies, but the director admitted he never expected his "very, very radical" film to be so popular. He candidly told Big Issue magazine: "Frankly, initially I was concerned."I thought we’d made something rather divisive. It’s a very, very radical movie."The film was shot in just 33 days on a limited budget but Brady admitted there were times when he didn’t think it would get made at all.He said: "It’s been long and arduous. The future of the film was very uncertain as recently as last August – so there’s some degree of whiplash."The last six months have been one thing,...

Brady Corbet wants audiences to have strong opinions about 'The Brutalist'.The 36-year-old filmmaker has helmed the acclaimed new movie – which stars Adrien Brody as Hungarian-Jewish architect Laszlo Toth as he moves to the US after surviving the Holocaust – and is happy for those watching to have views either way on the flick.Corbet told Dazed: "We don't want to scare artists off from saying anything. "If we're dealing with a culture where you cannot investigate history for contemporary, political reasons, that's very dangerous. I think we want to promote everyone contributing their perspective: Chinese, Taiwanese, the Gaza Strip, Israel."Right now, it's a time for communicating. It's not a time to stop listening to one another. Cinema is a great space to explore ideas."The director has promised that his next movie will be just as "radical" as 'The Brutalist', which has been tipped for Academy Award success.

How do the 2025 Oscars Best Picture nominees stack up on Rotten Tomatoes? And does the film with the highest freshness rating have a better shot at winning the big prize?
While critics’ scores don’t determine the Best Picture lineup (there are thousands of highly rated movies each year), once the lineup is selected by the Motion Picture Academy, there are at least a few tea leaves worth reading. For instance, the only film to win Best Picture in the last 10 years with a freshness rating lower than 90 percent is Green Book, which has a Tomatometer score of just 77 percent.
Last year’s winner, Oppenheimer, holds a formidable 93 percent, but it didn’t rank first among it’s competitors. That distinction went to The Holdovers, which has a rating of 97 percent. So, a movie doesn’t have to have the highest score to win Best Picture, but it certainly helps its chances.

Brady Corbet has insisted Adrien Brody and Felicity Jones' performances in 'The Brutalist' are "completely their own" after the film was criticised for using AI technology. The movie's editor Dávid Jancsó had told how filmmakers used tools from Ukranian company Respeecher to tweak the two stars' Hungarian dialogue to make it sound more authentic, sparking a backlash, but the director has insisted the "innovative" technology was used carefully in post-production to "refine" sounds for accuracy while maintaining the "authenticity" of the two stars' work.Brady told The Hollywood Reporter in a statement: “Adrien and Felicity’s performances are completely their own."They worked for months with dialect coach Tanera Marshall to perfect their accents. Innovative Respeecher technology was used in Hungarian language dialogue editing only, specifically to refine certain vowels and letters for accuracy. No English language was changed. "This was a manual process, done by our sound team and Respeecher in post-production.

The Brutalist is expected to do big things at the Academy Awards this year and could even take home the trophy for Best Picture, but ahead of the nominees being announced later this week, it's now being revealed that the film used AI to enhance the performances of both Adrien Brody and Felicity Jones. The news comes at a time when scrutiny over AI in the movie industry is at an all-time high, with many now calling into question the integrity of director Brady Corbet's epic period drama.
Speaking with RedShark News, The Brutalist's editor Dávid Jancsó admitted that AI was used to improve Brody and Jones' Hungarian accents to make them sound more authentic. "I am a native Hungarian speaker and I know that it is one of the most difficult languages to learn to pronounce," he said, adding:

Given the massive success of the MCU and its looming presence over almost all facets of pop culture, it's hard for well-known actors not to be approached with the question of whether they'd join the blockbuster franchise and what role specifically they'd want to play. Adrien Brody, who has been making the rounds promoting the A24 film The Brutalist, spoke to Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast about how he would be more than willing to explore the idea of joining the MCU. However, Brody said any such discussions would be dependent on whether the filmmaker's vision for the character was interesting. The actor would specifically say:
“Like I said, if I was presented with an opportunity to play an interesting character with a filmmaker that elevated me and gave me space to do something vastly different in that world, it sounds amazing. You have this wonderful machine...

Adrien Brody's performance in 'The Brutalist' was inspired by the rejection his grandfather faced. The 51-year-old actor plays Hungarian architect and Holocaust survivor Laszlo Toth – who immigrates to the United States in an attempt to restart his life – in the new movie and revealed that his portrayal drew on the hardships his immigrant maternal grandfather was met with in his attempts to find acting work.Speaking on 'The A24 Podcast', Adrien said: "My mother has a recording – I don't know if she recorded it or my grandfather had recorded it – but I remember him trying to get work."He aspired to be an actor too, but he was trying to get work and he had a recording of this and I've heard this recording and he sounds even more extreme than Laszlo's accent. In the span of two December weeks, Alessandro Nivola made three memorable impressions on the big screen.
Beginning with Brady Corbet’s Oscar-contending The Brutalist, Nivola signed on to play Attila Miller just days into 2020’s pandemic. At the time, production was still expected to begin three weeks later, but as we can all attest, those best-laid plans quickly turned into three years. Thus, Nivola became one of only a few holdovers from Corbet’s 2020 cast, as Adrien Brody then took over the lead role of Attila’s cousin, László Toth. The latter is a celebrated Hungarian-Jewish architect who, having narrowly survived the Holocaust, emigrates to the States where Attila provides him with a bed and a job on behalf of his modest Philadelphia-based furniture store.
While there’s a great deal of love between the two cousins, Nivola is now shedding light on some of the unspoken elements that inform their eventual conflict.

Adrien Brody has opened up about how deeply his role in The Pianist affected him, both physically and emotionally. To play Holocaust survivor Władysław Szpilman in Roman Polanski’s 2002 film, the Oscar-winning actor went to extreme lengths to make his performance as real as possible.

A criminally lesser-known sci-fi action movie is all set to land on free streaming in the new year, meaning audiences can start things off right by discovering this delightful B-movie throwback starring MCU actor and Memento star Guy Pearce. Titled Lockout, the action flick borrows from all manner of cinematic greats, including the likes of Die Hard and John Carpenter’s Escape From New York, to deliver an experience that, while not fresh, is all kinds of fun.
Directed by James Mather and Stephen Saint Leger from a script written by Mather, Saint Leger, and Léon: The Professional and Taken’s Luc Besson, who also serves as an executive producer, Lockout stars Maggie Grace, Vincent Regan, Joe Gilgun, Lennie James and Peter Stormare alongside Guy Pearce. The action sci-fi movie is due to hit the free streaming platform Tubi on January 1, and you can check out the gloriously high-concept below.

Christmas Day will bring a cluster of specialty titles to the box office, but some films got a head start this weekend. Leading them is A24’s “The Brutalist,” which opened on four screens in New York and Los Angeles this weekend and grossed $266,791 for a strong average of $66,700.
Starring Adrien Brody as Laszlo Toth, a Hungarian architect who struggles to fulfill his artistic vision after emigrating to America after World War II, “The Brutalist” has earned critical acclaim since its premiere at the Venice Film Festival, where director Brady Corbet won the Silver Lion. It has earned seven Golden Globe nominations, putting it alongside films like “Anora,” “Conclave” and “Emilia Perez” in the Oscar race.
With a 215-minute run time and an emotionally grueling second half, “The Brutalist” will have limited appeal with mass audiences. But a 15-minute intermission could help get curious moviegoers who are antsy about the length off the fence,...
