The penultimate episode in Hannibal season 2 sees Lecter mete out more punishments to the vile. Here's Paul's review...
Review
This review contains spoilers.
2.12 Tome-wan
Michael Rymer has become the go-to director for Hannibal, with Tome-wan serving as his seventh time at the helm - that's two more credits than the man who defined the look and feel of the show, David Slade (counting the upcoming finale). The last time Rymer's hand was this firmly on the tiller of a series was Battlestar Galactica, starting with the mini-series and then establishing the tone for everything to come with the brilliant opening episode 33.
The penultimate episode of this season has certain responsibilities and Rymer, with a script by Chris Brancato, Scott Nimerfro, and showrunner/mastermind Bryan Fuller, manages to do everything that is necessary to set up a season finale that promises to explosively establish a dramatic new starting point for the recently announced third season.

Hannibal Season 2, Episode 12: “Tome-wan”
Directed by Michael Rymer
Written by Chris Brancato, Bryan Fuller, and Scott Nimerfro
Airs Friday at 10pm Et on NBC
You can always count on Hannibal for a grim spectacle, and last night’s ‘Tome-wan’ was no exception. What began as a pretty standard episode, if a little more revelatory than the last few, worked its way to some of the show’s biggest moments yet (but more on that later).
Let’s start from the top, shall we? The episode opens with some typical Will/Hannibal banter as their therapy sessions continue. The conversation makes it clear that each is weary of the other but neither is willing to show their hand completely, and both maintain their poker faces, even as they hurl half-hearted truths, ill-meaning metaphors, and thinly veiled threats at one another between their more standard philosophizing on the human condition.

Hannibal Season 2, Episode 8 “Su-zakana”
Directed by Vincenzo Natali
Written by Scott Nimerfro
Airs Thursdays at 10pm Et on NBC
Hannibal’s “Su-zakana” is pretty much a palate cleanser; an episode representing a new start in the relationship between Dr. Lecter and Will Graham. Now halfway through season two, the series seems to be entering a new phase in which Will slowly lures Hannibal by using himself as live bait. Hannibal has never been subtle, and if you didn’t already guess based on the episode’s title alone (which refers to a palate-cleansing-Japanese-dish), this week is all about the concept of rebirth.
Vincent Natali (Splice) directs his first episode of Hannibal, and the results are stunning. The level of macabre imagery was amped up several fold this week with elaborately staged crime scenes that will have viewers sinking down in their seats. If the starling trapped inside a woman sewn...

Hannibal Episode 206
“Futamono”
Written By: Andy Black, Bryan Fuller, Steve Lightfoot, and Scott Nimerfro
Directed By: Tim Hunter
Original Airdate: 4 April 2014
In This Episode…
Jack goes to see Will, and tells him that Hannibal was nearly killed by the man who killed the bailiff and the judge. The only important part of that “story” is that the orderly didn’t kill the judge - that was the Ripper. And nothing Will said made that happen - it just happened. He also knows why the Ripper kills in quick succession: if he waits too long, the meat spoils. Jack is surprised that the Ripper eats his victims, and equates him to Hobbs - a likeness that Will quickly erases: “Hobbs ate his victims to honor them. Hannibal eats his victims because to him, people are no better than pigs.” Will thinks he is going to hold a dinner party soon, and...

Hannibal Episode 204
“Takiawase”
Written By: Scott Nimerfro and Bryan Fuller
Directed By: David Semel
Original Airdate: 21 March 2014
In This Episode…
Beverly visits Will with more crime scene photos; this time of The Muralist, James Gray, in the mural. There were no signs of a struggle, and The Muralist would have worked alone, which means that the person who sewed him into his work had to understand him well enough to find his “studio” and have a feel for his artwork. He again points Beverly towards Hannibal and suggests she look for “clever details.” Beverly will look for the details, but not for Hannibal. She heads back to the lab and starts looking over The Muralist’s corpse with Hannibal. He lets slip an intriguingly specific clue that could not have been a mistake: to get to the truth behind appearances, one must get under the skin to understand the true pathology.

Hannibal Season 2, Episode 4 “Takiawase”
Directed by David Semel
Written by Scott Nimerfro & Bryan Fuller
Airs Thursdays at 10pm Et on NBC
Hannibal continues to prove why it is one of the very best TV shows on the air and yet, the most criminally underrated series on television. “Takiawase,” is another standout episode full of horrific imagery, twisted mind games, swirling aesthetics and overwhelming emotional moments. The two major themes this week: Having your identity taken form you, and dying with dignity.
Will wastes no time in tyring to convince Beverly that Hannibal is guilty of the crimes he is accused of committing, and while she walks away a non-believer, Graham sends her in the right direction. It begins with the autopsy of the colour palette killer as Beverly decides to invite Hannibal along to assist. “You have to get to the truth beneath the appearances,” he tells her. “Only by...

"Takiawase" finally finds Will readying for battle in his war against Hannibal. It was also an episode full of swirling aesthetics and deeply emotional moments -- it's unsurprising maybe that Scott Nimerfro co-wrote the episode, he being of the late Pushing Daisies. "Takiawase" was full of Daisy-esque turns, from the bees (reminiscent of the Season Two opener "Bzzzzzz!") as well as the animation peppered throughout. Will, too, seems to have woken up from his catatonia, and was incredibly punchy with Chilton and Beverly. As he continues to mount his campaign against Hannibal though, his biggest ally may not have properly heeded his warnings. Hit the jump for why it's ok to look into the sun if you don't have any eyes (or a brain). Last week, Hannibal reset things by keeping Will off of death row (for now), and establishing that he means enough to him to keep around. The game,...

Hannibal Season 1, Episode 13 ‘Savoureux’
Written by Bryan Fuller, Steve Lightfoot & Scott Nimerfro
Directed by David Slade
returns for season two in 2013
(note: Randy is filling in for Ricky this week. You can read Randy’s reviews of Hannibal and other shows at Processed Media).
As we’ve seen, Hannibal Lecter is a fan of the orchestra: some might dismiss it as a component of his natural elegance and high-brow demeanor, but his love for the art runs deeper. There’s something about the grandiose organization going on, the management of subtleties among a group of extremely talented people that Hannibal loves: throughout this season, he’s made the FBI his orchestra, overseeing every investigation, defining the tempo of Will’s insanity with his steady hands. In ‘Savoureux’, he almost regrettably reaches his final movement, and with a tear in his eye, finishes grotesque arrangement with a flourish.

Hannibal Episode 112
“Savoureux”
Written By: Steve Lightfoot and Bryan Fuller & Scott Nimerfro
Directed By: David Slade
Original Airdate: 20 June 2013
In This Episode...
In Will’s latest nightmare, he is walking through the woods and finds a bloody tree. Someone - or something - is there. He wakes to discover his dogs whimpering, and discovers his feet are muddy. He stumbles into the kitchen for water and some pills. His vision becomes jittery and he vomits into the sink. That is when he sees a human ear settled next to the drain.
Will waits on the porch, in the cold, like a lost child, until Hannibal shows up. He relates to Hannibal what happened in Minnesota with Abigail - or at least, what he can remember happened. Hannibal tells him somberly that they have to call Jack on this one. The FBI shows up, and Will is taken in to be...

Hannibal Episode 110
“Roti”
Written By: Steve Lightfoot and Bryan Fuller & Scott Nimerfro
Directed By: Guillermo Navarro
Original Airdate: 6 June 2013
In This Episode...
Dr. Gideon is being transferred. He is suing Dr. Chilton for “psychiatric driving,” claiming that Chilton implanted the idea in his head that he is the Chesapeake Ripper. Chilton vehemently denies this, which was the tactic Hannibal suggested. Gideon blames Chilton for the nurse’s death, and Alana doesn’t entirely disagree.
Unsurprisingly, Gideon kills the two guards who are transporting him, plus the driver, and escapes. He leaves the three corpses beneath some barren trees and ties their organs with their veins and hangs them from the bare branches like the world’s most violent Christmas tree. This is yet another clear sign to Will that Gideon is not the Ripper - the Ripper would never leave healthy organs behind. When the CSI team get the corpses back to the morgue,...

At first blush, “Hannibal” looks like the conceptual twin of CBS timeslot rival “Elementary,” a series that seeks to leverage a brilliant literary character to sell a moody procedural. It’s also a little like “It Takes a Thief,” only here substituting a serial killer. Stick with the series through a handful of episodes, though, and it’s clear that showrunner Bryan Fuller has brought a semi-hypnotic quality to this prequel adaptation of Thomas Harris’ Hannibal Lecter character — ungainly and messy, but at times visually arresting, and thanks in large part to the central trio of Mads Mikkelsen, Hugh Dancy and Laurence Fishburne, quite interesting. Bon appetit.

During this year's Comic-Con in San Diego, I had the chance to sit down with "Red" creators Warren Ellis and Cully Hamner to discuss the upcoming film based on their comic book series, as well as various other projects each creator has in the works. Among those projects is "Gravel," the upcoming film based on Ellis' comic with artist Mike Wolfer, published by Avatar Press.
Announced back in October, the "Gravel" movie will get a first draft of its screenplay by Ellis himself, who will also serve as executive producer on the film for "Superman Returns" studio Legendary Pictures. The celebrated writer offered MTV News a brief update on the status of the film, as well as that of "Global Frequency," a television series based on one of his popular comics.
"I'm halfway through ['Gravel'] right now," Ellis told MTV News of the film's script. "I'm actually writing a new William Gravel story.

Warren Ellis' "Global Frequency" is making another run at the small screen, as The CW Network is allegedly trying to adapt the comic book series once again.
According to Production Weekly's Twitter feed, a second adaptation of "Global Frequency" is in the works courtesy of The CW and writer Scott Nimerfro. The news was further touched upon by Ellis himself, who wrote on his personal website that he hadn't "been cleared to comment yet" by the network.
"Shouldn't say any more until I get the nod from the studio," said Ellis. "But yes."
For some context, "Global Frequency" was previously attempted as a television series for The WB Network — the initial form of The CW — back in 2005. Global Frequency, the DC/Wildstorm comic, might be back in play as a TV series.
You may remember that in 2005, Mark Burnett (producer of Survivor) and John Rogers (who would go on to write the comic Blue Beetle and create the show Leverage) created a pilot for the WB. The pilot wasn't picked up; however, it got leaked to the Interwebs and became the most watched pilot that never got picked up.
Now the industry magazine Production Weekly has just posted the following on Twitter: The CW will again try to adapt Warren Ellis' comic book "Global Frequency," this time Scott Nimerfro will script the pilot. The pilot wasn't picked up; however, it got leaked to the Interwebs and became the most watched pilot that never got picked up.

HBO tops WGA awards list with five noms
HBO led all TV networks in attracting nominations in the 60th anniversary WGA Awards, fetching two noms for dramatic series writing and three for comedy series writing.
In the dramatic series category, HBO's The Sopranos and The Wire are joined by Showtime's Dexter, NBC's Friday Night Lights and AMC's Mad Men.
In the comedy series category, HBO attracted noms for Curb Your Enthusiasm, Entourage and Flight of the Conchords. Also nominated in the category are NBC's The Office and 30 Rock.
Conchords also attracted a nom in the category of new TV series, where it joins Mad Men, FX's Damages, ABC's Pushing Daisies and Comedy Central's The Sarah Silverman Program.
The WGA's recent news releases have dealt almost solely with its ongoing strike against some of the same companies figuring in the WGA Awards. The guild had planned to release its TV and radio noms today but released the information late Wednesday without previous notice.
"In order to maximize press coverage for the 2008 Writers Guild Awards as well as not compete with Golden Globes' nominees ... we made the decision to go out a day earlier than previously announced," WGA West spokesman Gregg Mitchell said.
Globe noms were released this morning.
The WGA Awards are set for Feb. 9, with simultaneous ceremonies planned at the Bonaventure Hotel in Los Angeles and the Hudson Theatre in New York.

Uni ecstatic with 'Agony' pitch

Universal Pictures is in Agony for Scott Stuber and Mary Parent. The studio has picked up the horror pitch from Scott Nimerfro for the duo to produce via their Stuber/Parent shingle. While plot details are being kept under wraps, the story is set in the world of urban legends on college campuses, with one horrifying legend in particular turning out to be true. Nimerfro is now writing the script. The deal was in the low- to mid-six figures.
