11 Oscar contenders with the most to gain at this year’s Cannes Film Festival
Image
Oscar season is ready to start.

The 2025 Cannes Film Festival kicks off on Tuesday with a lineup that includes new movies from Wes Anderson, Ari Aster, Richard Linklater, Spike Lee, Lynne Ramsay, and more of the world’s top auteurs.

In many ways, the Cannes Film Festival is more important than ever for the awards race. Over the last five years, multiple movies that premiered on the French Riviera have gone on to receive Best Picture nominations at the Academy Awards, including Oscar winners Parasite and Anora, and nominees Top Gun: Maverick, Triangle of Sadness, Killers of the Flower Moon, The Substance, and Emilia Pérez. With the 2025 lineup loaded with some highly anticipated titles, it would be considered an upset if at least one or two of the following movies failed to secure eventual Oscar bids in the top categories.

Ahead of the Cannes Film Festival, here are the 11 projects...

'Doctor Who' Showrunner Wants Dcu Star Viola Davis To Play Iconic Villain
Image
Over the years, there have been countless familiar faces that have made guest appearances on Doctor Who, including the likes of Bill Nighy, Andrew Garfield, Maisie Williams, and Olivia Colman. If Russell T Davies gets his way, there will be one more added to the list by way of Dcu star Viola Davis, but as of right now, that's nothing more than a pipe dream for the showrunner, who recently called Davis "one of the greatest actors in the world."

Speaking with GamesrRadar+ ahead of the new season of Doctor Who that premieres on April 12, Davies was asked who he would love to have make a guest appearance on the long-running sci-fi series that hasn't already been called upon. After humming and hawing and saying that "almost everyone has been in it," he finally landed on Davis, who starred in the Dcu as Amanda Waller, and will be kicking some...

After 60 Years, America's 1st Anime Re-Airs After AI Restoration
Image
In September 1963, American audiences received their first introduction to anime via the televised debut of Osamu Tezuka's Astro Boy. Recently, the classic black-and-white series was given a brand-new, full-color restoration and a prime-time broadcast slot on Japanese television.

Per Osamu Tezuka's official site, a "re-edited version" of Astro Boy: Hero of Space (1964) -- the franchise's first-ever compilation film -- was re-broadcast on March 30 (effectively March 31) by Nhk General TV. Prior to the film's release, the network spotlighted it via its online blog, stating that it has "now been restored to full color using AI-restoration technology." The original 1964 version was shown with only some colorized scenes. Certain sequences, such as transitions between individual episodes, were redrawn by human animators for the restored edition.

Savanah Leaf, Morgan Matthews & Cara Loftus Talk First Steps Into Feature Film — Storyhouse
Image
Earth Mama filmmaker Savanah Leaf, X+Y and 500 Miles helmer Morgan Matthews and Spilt Milk screenwriter Cara Loftus all touched down at Dublin’s second annual screenwriting festival Storyhouse this week where they revealed their different paths of entry into the film business.

“Someone once told me that you’re not a director until you tell people you are,” said Leaf, whose debut feature Earth Mama earned her a BAFTA award. “So, for me, it became about owning that title. I would then tell everyone I was an aspiring director and so I just started to reframe that in my own headspace.”

Leaf, a former athlete who had played volleyball for Team Gb at the 2012 Olympics, said she took the money she had made from her sports career and put it into making her first short film The F Word.

10 Best Villain Introductions in Western Movies, Ranked
Image
Western movies have long entertained fans with high-stakes drama and action, and over the years, the genre has produced a long list of admirable heroes. However, for these heroes to thrive, the genre's greatest sharpshooters often need an equally impressive antagonist to overcome. A great Western villain is essential to the genre's storytelling, and in many cases, these characters leave their mark on the series from their first moments on screen.

Considering that first impressions often define a character’s core traits, Western villains have traditionally made an impact on viewers when established in a story and fundamentally shape the hero’s obstacles. Within the pantheon of great Western movie villains, some have come along and truly exceed an introduction and advance a film’s developing dramatic stakes.

Jason Statham’s New Action Thriller From 'Angel Has Fallen' Director Gets Filming Update
Image
Action icon Jason Statham continues to fly the flag for crowd-pleasing action movie fare, with the actor and martial artist now joining forces with the perfect director for another tale of a man with a mysterious past who is forced to fight for justice. The action thriller project does not yet have a title, but is now shooting in Enniskerry, Ireland, and will see The Stath working under the direction of Ric Roman Waugh, who is best known for helming the Gerard Butler-led Angel Has Fallen and Greenland.

Enniskerry hosted the Disney sequel Disenchanted back in 2022, but rather than the music and whimsy of that fantastical comedy, Jason Statham will instead tear through the picturesque village as a man who, after saving a girl from drowning, finds himself the target of a local gang. Nicholas Hoult's Underrated 12-Year-Old Fantasy Bomb Is Coming to Netflix
Image
It is customary that once every few years, a movie studio - in hopes of creating future success - will produce a sacrificial lamb of sorts, a high-budget fantasy film with a cast only most directors could dream of that exists purely to fail spectacularly at the box office. If you find this to be entirely unbelievable, then surely question why there is such a trend in fantasy that continues to this day.

It varies from film to film on the specifics of the failure - sometimes it's a matter of poor script, sometimes overestimation of the audience turnout, sometimes the story just doesn’t appeal. Whatever the case was for Jack the Giant Slayer, the film didn't get the success it deserves, though it will get another chance to shine when it starts streaming on Netflix on April 1, via What's On Netflix.

Based on the English fairy tale Jack and the Beanstalk,...

Before ‘The White Lotus,’ Aimee Lou Wood Collided With Bill Nighy an Oscar-Nominated Akira Kurosawa Remake That Will Shake You
Image
While remakes will always be forced to justify their existence if the original film that they are inspired by is already well-received, that pressure can be even more heightened when it is considered to be an all-time great classic.Akira Kurosawais often considered to be one of the greatest filmmakers of all time, and Ikiru is definitely his most personal film; although Kurosawa was best known for his epic Samurai films, Ikiru was a deeply personal drama about one man coping with the inevitability of death. Even though Ikiru is just as powerful today as it was during its initial release, Oliver Hermanus’ powerful remake Livingperfectly added new context to the story by setting it in England during the 1950s. Although it is best known for earning Bill Nighy the first Academy Award nomination of his entire career, Living features a memorable, inspiring performance from Aimee Lou Wood.

Oscars 2025: 9 Other Horror Films & Performances That Deserved Nominations This Year
Image
It’s a well-known fact that the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences don’t tend to favour genre films when it comes to shortlisting for their tentpole awards ceremony. It’s simply not their bag and that goes that double for anything that happens to fall into the disreputable slum of horror. Indeed — bar a few outliers like Silence of the Lambs, The Exorcist or Get Out — scary movies rarely get a fair shake come Oscar season. Certainly not when compared to, say, glitzy biopics or period pieces that have a more prestigious air about them.

Yet, against all odds, the genre has done quite well for itself this year. Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu is dominating the technical categories, The Substance has found itself as an unlikely contender for four of the “Big Five” awards, and even Alien: Romulus has gotten a look in for its VFX work.

With that being said,...

The Beekeeper 2 with Jason Statham is in the works at Miramax. Unfortunately, one member of the original movie's creative team will not be returning (at least in the same role) for the action sequel.

According to Deadline, David Ayer will not be returning as director for The Beekeeper 2, with Nobody 2 helmer Timo Tjahjanto tapped as his replacement. Ayer is currently busy filming the Brad Pitt-led movie The Heart of the Beast for Paramount. However, Miramax is hoping that Ayer will join the sequel in a producing capacity. Kurt Wimmer returned to write the screenplay for The Beekeeper 2, which is slated to begin production this fall. Amazon MGM Studios is expected to secure the sequel's domestic rights. Ozzy Osbourne Was Invited to Audition for 'Pirates of the Caribbean,' But Sharon Said No
Image
Ozzy Osbourne could have been in Pirates of the Caribbean. Ozzy's wife and long-time manager, Sharon, recently appeared on "The Magnificent Others with Billy Corgan" podcast, and revealed the legendary singer was offered the chance to audition for a role.

"Do you want to know the biggest mistake I ever made with Ozzy? He got offered to go and read for 'Pirates of the Caribbean' — and I’ve never said this to anyone. I said no. Now, wouldn’t he have been perfect?"

It would have been an inspiring casting decision had the "Prince of Darkness" landed a part in Pirates of the Caribbean. But Sharon was quick to say, "Johnny [Depp] … wanted Keith [Richards] to be a pirate, you remember?"

Depp famously based his performance as Jack Sparrow on The Rolling Stones guitarist, Keith Richards. So it made sense that the actor pushed for him to play Jack's long-lost father,...

Legendary Rock Musician Could've Been in Pirates of the Caribbean But His Wife Said No
Image
The Pirates of the Caribbean swashbuckler franchise is synonymous with Johnny Depp, who played the drunk and eccentric pirate Jack Sparrow. However, Depp, who is also a musician, had brought several high-profile friends to the franchise.

The film series followed Sparrow's adventures in getting back his ship, the Black Pearl, as well as rescuing various characters over the course of the first five films. The franchise was a major success at the box office, partly thanks to Depp's popularity as the infamous pirate. Depp was hardly the most famous name in the franchise, and even Ozzy Osbourne was offered the chance to read for a role, his wife and longtime manager, Sharon Osbourne, revealed during an appearance on the podcast The Magnificent Others with Billy Corgan.

Jason Statham’s Mutiny has a been given a release date from Lionsgate
Image
Jason Statham’s upcoming film Mutiny has now been given a release date, according to Deadline. Lionsgate has given the new action thriller an opening on January 9, 2026. That weekend is currently not sporting competition from any other films, but it will be following up the opening week of Universal’s M3GAN spin-off Soulm8te, which could be its only formidable challenge at the box office after the popularity of the original M3GAN.

Lionsgate, MadRiver, and Punch Palace are teaming up to release the film in theaters. Lindsay Michel and J.P. Davis wrote the screenplay for Mutiny, with principal photography beginning last September in the UK. Statham produces through his newly-founded Punch Palace Productions, with Marc Butan via his MadRiver Pictures studio.

In Mutiny, after his billionaire industrialist boss is murdered in front of him, Cole Reed is set up to take the fall for the crime— leaving him on the run...

Rumor: Pirates of the Caribbean 6 Moving Ahead With Johnny Depp After All
Image
A new Pirates of the Caribbean movie could be on the horizon. A new rumor has emerged claiming that Disney is quietly putting together a new installment in the action-adventure franchise.

According to The DisInsider, one of its sources has shared that Walt Disney Studios is getting ready to begin production on the sixth Pirates of the Caribbean movie at a Hollywood sound stage. While there is no timeline for when production might officially begin (it's likely a ways off since no director or cast has been announced yet), DisInsider added that Johnny Depp is expected to return as Captain Jack Sparrow. However, since the site was unable to get a second source to verify the first, the aforementioned rumor should be treated with a grain of salt until officially confirmed or debunked.

One of the best movies of last year is now all set to land on Netflix later this year, and we now know when. Thanks to What’s on Netflix, the science fiction animated outing The Wild Robot is now due to stream on the platform in May, meaning that audiences will finally be able to watch this modern masterpiece about a shipwrecked robot who connects with nature on an uninhabited island from the comfort of their own home.

According to the outlet, The Wild Robot will land on Netflix on May 24, 2025, before moving back to Peacock after 10 months. While this may be subject to change, we can at least be confident that The Wild Robot will be available to stream on Netflix within the next few months. Prime Video made a huge mistake canceling its only Harlan Coben show
Image
You might be a fan of the Harlan Coben Netflix shows like Missing You, Fool Me Once, and The Stranger, but most fans of those shows probably don't know about one of Coben's other shows, Shelter, was canceled on Prime Video after one season. And, it was a big mistake.

Harlan Coben's Shelter premiered on Prime Video on Aug. 18, 2023. The series ran for eight episodes through Sept. 22, 2023. The series was created by Harlan and Charlotte Coben and starred Jaden Michael, Abby Corrigan, Adrian Greensmith, Sage Linder, Brian Altemus, and Constance Zimmer.

The series tells the story of Mickey Bolitar (Michael) who investigates the disappearance of his girlfriend in a mysterious small town. You might recognize the name Bolitar if you're a fan of Coben's works.

For me, there are two main reasons (and a lot of little ones) why canceling Shelter was a bad move for Prime Video.

Shelter is...

Gerard Butler, Morena Baccarin, and Roger Dale Floyd in Greenland (2020)
Jason Statham | Filming gets underway in the UK on an untitled action film
Gerard Butler, Morena Baccarin, and Roger Dale Floyd in Greenland (2020)
Greenland director Ric Roman Waugh is now directing a new, untitled Jason Statham action thriller, with filming underway in the UK and Ireland.

Last May, we heard about one of a several forthcoming projects from action specialist, Jason Statham. It didn’t have a title, but it did have a premise: Statham, roaming about on a Scottish island under the assumed name of Mason, and rescuing a little girl in the middle of a raging storm.

Filming was set to begin in November 2024, with the attached director being Baltasar Kormakur, perhaps best known for his somewhat tame survival movie, Everest.

As of February 2025, things appear to have changed somewhat. Filming did not get underway in 2024. Kormakur is out and a new director is in: step forward Ric Roman Waugh, who directed Gerard Butler in the beefy end-of-the-world thriller, Greenland. Under his stewardship, the production is now due to get underway in the UK and Ireland,...

The Buzziest Films for Sale at EFM 2025: A Samuel L. Jackson Hitman Thriller, Barry Keoghan-Riley Keough Collab, Isabelle Huppert Vampire Mystery and More
Image
As the European Film Market kicks off Feb. 13 in Berlin with a new market head, Tanja Meissner, at the helm, this year’s buzziest titles suggest the industry will be looking toward tried-and-true genre fare and splashy, star-driven packages to thaw the winter chill.

Bankable stars are expected to heat things up in Berlin, with Ari Aster and A24’s “Eddington”, Guy Ritchie’s “Wife & Dog”, Ernest Dickerson’s untitled hitman thriller and Kantemir Balagov’s “Butterfly Jam” showcasing how marquee names remain a safe bet as uncertainty continues to reign in the theatrical market.

On the genre side of things, horror is still expected to scare up sales, with buyers looking to sink their fangs into Isabelle Huppert’s 16th-century vampire mystery “The Blood Countess” and Jacob Chase’s killer canine genre-bender “Bad Boy,” starring Ke Huy Quan and Lili Reinhart. 2025 Oscar Animated Feature Nominees: 5 Directors Pick Pivotal Scenes from Their Films
Image
IndieWire invited the directors of the five Oscar-nominated Best Animated Features to pick and analyze a pivotal scene that best represents their films: Chris Sanders (“The Wild Robot”), Gints Zilbalodis (“Flow”), Kelsey Mann (“Inside Out 2”), Nick Park and Merlin Crossingham (“Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl”), and Adam Elliot (“Memoir of a Snail”).

“The Wild Robot,” the Best Feature Annie winner, is the crowning achievement for writer-director Sanders. The dramatically compelling and visually arresting sci-fi adventure (adapted from Peter Brown’s illustrated book) finds robot Roz (Lupita Nyong’o) washed ashore on an uninhabited island, where she must adapt and survive among the animals. DreamWorks’ innovative handmade stylization takes Sanders back to his 2D roots with its tactile nature and watercolor backgrounds. The more time Roz spends in the wild, the more her surface changes with dents, scratches, mildew, and mold. She quickly becomes a hand-painted surface, blending in with the animals and the wilderness.
