“Vendetta,” the awaited Corsican blood feud drama-thriller from Marco Cherqui, who produced Jacques Audiard’s breakout movie “A Prophet,” will be brought onto the sales market at Series Mania by France TV Distribution.
Set up at Cpb Films, behind Rebecca Zlotowski’s 2019 Toronto player “Savages” and the upcoming series expansion of “A Prophet,” both produced by Cherqui as Cpb head of TV drama and cinema, “Vendetta” is co-produced by public broadcaster France TV, where it will air on France 2.
News of its international distribution launch comes just after “Vendetta” went into production in the first week of March, shooting in Corsica.
Billed as a mafia thriller and family tragedy, the six-part series turns on Anto, a Parisian cop of Corsican origin, who returns to his homeland with wife Vanina, to take over the family vineyard.
Ambushed, his father is murdered and Anto, wounded, falls into deep coma.

Quick Links Two Hollywood Greats Join Forces for an Epic Fantasy Hereafter Becomes a Major Critical Dud Eastwood and Damon Don't Stay Down for Long
Clint Eastwood and Matt Damon are undeniably two of Hollywood's brightest and illustrious performers, and in 2010, the cinema greats joined forces once again (after previously collaborating on Invictus) for the captivating fantasy disaster film Hereafter, in which Damon appears as a factory worker and clairvoyant who is able to communicate with the dead and attempts to use his wondrous gifts to help both a French journalist and grieving British boy connect to the other side.
Despite the project's premise and talent seeming like it would be a sure-fire hit with moviegoers on paper, Hereafter failed to impress critics and was heavily picked apart upon its release, with many deeming the picture uninspired and downright dreary. Hereafter was Eastwood's only attempt at tackling the fantasy genre,...

Code Unknown
Written and directed by Michael Haneke
France/Germany/Romania, 2000
Michael Haneke’s Code Unknown, the director’s 2000 follow-up to his brilliant 1997 film Funny Games, opens on group of deaf children playing sign-language charades. It’s an oddly provocative opening, in that it instantly leaves one to speculate where such a scene is heading, and yet is curiously soon forgotten as the film proper begins, only to be recalled again at the very end of the movie. While this may appear as an arbitrary insertion of an apparently irrelevant parenthesis, there proves to be more to the inclusion than one could initially gather when the scene is first presented. It would indeed be impossible to understand its full significance until the film concludes, for like these children attempting to guess the phrase or word mimicked by another, Code Unknown is itself about figuring out behavior, trying to deduce and...

Over the past two decades, Austrian auteur Michael Haneke has grown into one of the most formidable cinematic titans currently working today. Winning five awards for his six times competing at Cannes (including Palme d’Or wins in 2009 and 2012), several of his prominent early titles tend to be overlooked in broad discussions concerning the filmmaker’s continued observation of humankind’s increasing inability to communicate.
A purveyor of social maladies, usually within an isolated microcosm, Criterion’s restoration of his first French production, 2000’s Code Unknown, is a perfect opportunity to revisit a prescient example of greater cultural shifts and conflicts to come. Although contemporary audiences might be tempted to lump this early title from Haneke into a movement of cinema from this particular decade wherein interconnected vignettes became a popular format, this compilation of one shot, single-takes is beyond comparison with the glut of busy-bodied melodramas eventually running this composition tactic into the ground.

The Scapegoat – or, Au bonheur des ogres, in the original French – adapts the first novel of the same name in Daniel Pennac’s popular ‘La Saga Malaussène’ series, making it a very promising crime-comedy to look forward to next year.
The first three posters for the French-language film have made their way online, giving us a look at leading man, Raphaël Personnaz as the series’ eponymous Benjamin Malaussène.
Starring alongside him will be the lovely Bérénice Bejo, the Oscar-nominated star of last year’s success story, The Artist, as well as Emir Kusturica, Thierry Neuvic, Guillaume de Tonquedec, and Mélanie Bernier.
“There is something strange and fishy – some would even say abnormal – about the Malaussène tribe. But if you take a closer look, no one could be happier than this cheerfully chaotic family, even though their mother is usually off on one romantic junket or other, leaving behind a slew...

Usually when I think of French actress and fashion model Laetitia Casta I tend to picture her with a lot less on, but that's just me. Below you can see the new French one-sheet for Julien Lacombe and Pascal Sid's new French 3D horror 'Behind the Walls' (Aka 'Derriere les murs'). And all I can say is that it's a shame that Casta's own derriere has been covered up on this occassion. Those keen horror-spotters out there will be aware that the image used on the poster is of course taken from a still in the movie we posted up back in January. Thierry Neuvic, Roger Dumas, Jacques Bonnaffe, Anne Benoit, Anne Loiret and Emma Ninucci all co-star. Cast your eyes on the new poster below as well as a sneaky peek at the Laetitia we've all come to appreciate immensely....

And the foreign horror keeps coming on strong with one of the latest entries from France, Behind the Walls (or Derrière les murs), debuting a new trailer. Of course the film will be in 3D, but for now we won't hold that against it.
Behind the Walls, which stars Laetitia Casta and is directed by Pascal Sid and Julien Lacombe, is a 1922-set fantasy thriller about a young novelist. Casta's co-stars include Thierry Neuvic and Roger Dumas.
Synopsis:
Centre of France, 1922. Suzanne, a young novelist lacking inspiration, decides to isolate herself in the countryside to write her new book. As Suzanne discovers a sealed-up room in the basement of her house, she starts writing oddly easily. Visions and nightmares soon strike her while the villagers grow worried as several little girls mysteriously disappear...

Cannes 2011 is in full swing and it seems rather odd to post this clip from a movie which screened at the festival back in 2010 but it really shows how long some of these movies take to be seen in the rest of the world after debuting at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival. Love Like Poison is directed by Katell Quillévéré and stars Clara Augarde, Lio, Michel Galabru, Stefano Cassetti, Thierry Neuvic and Youen Leboulanger-Gourvil. It’s available to view in cinemas now.
A coming-of-age drama which skillfully combines sexual frankness with a captivating sense of innocence, first-time director Katell Quillévéré’s charming Love Like Poison was a surprise, yet deserved, critical hit at the 2010 Cannes Film Festival.
Anna, a young teenager, comes home from her Catholic boarding school for the holidays and discovers her father has left. Her mother is devastated and confined in the company of the local priest,...

Coming of age stories have been a staple of cinema for nearly as long as the medium has been in existence. Exploring themes of budding sexuality, immerging adulthood and familiarity with life, love and death, all through the often-confused mind of a teenager, these films seek to analyse the difficulties of growing up.
Love Like Poison, French writer/director Katell Quillévéré’s first feature length film, attempts to slot into this subgenre of dramatic cinema whilst also critiquing the overbearing influence of the Catholic Church. To non-French/non-Catholic audiences the film loses an element of its impact through this overarching theme of Catholicism as an important aspect of everyday life. However, it does succeed in offering an insightful glimpse into growing up in a small French town.
On a limited theatrical release in the UK from today, Love Like Poison is reviewed below.

A bittersweet French gem from last year's Cannes festival gets a welcome UK release
Writer-director Katell Quillévéré, with her first feature, reveals herself to be a supremely natural film-maker; her movie speaks of Catholicism, nascent sexuality and la France profonde – and the characters she creates are subtly but richly sympathetic. This is a coming-of-age movie that is touching, funny, desperately sad and has a spiritual dimension that comes to its mysterious and satisfying fruition at the very end, with an inspired choral arrangement of Radiohead's Creep over the final credits.
Love Like Poison (the title is taken from a Serge Gainsbourg song) centres on a crisis with many facets. Anna, played by Clara Augarde, is a floweringly beautiful 14-year-old girl who comes home from her boarding school for the summer to find that her father, Paul (Thierry Neuvic), has left the family home for another woman. Her mother, Jeanne (Lio), now conceives a miserable,...

Love Like Poison / Un Poison Violent
Director: Katell Quillévéré
Written by Katell Quillévéré
2010, France
With a title borrowed from Serge Gainsbourg, it should be no great surprise that Katell Quillévéré’s feature debut Love Like Poison combines subversiveness with musical eclecticism and a touch of bawdy humour. Quillévéré isn’t trying to pick up the mantle of Claude Chabrol — this is a coming-of-age drama set in rural Brittany and punctuated with some unexpected English folk songs. Even if you’ve had your fill of adolescent angst, narcotic experiments and clandestine gropings, the fearless performance here of young Clara Augarde is reason enough to watch.
The story begins in church, with 14-year-old Anna (Augarde), being distracted during Holy Communion by winsome choirboy Pierre (Youen Leboulanger-Gourvil) giving her the eye. This is the first of several occasions in the film, when Anna’s behaviour during a religious service doesn’t meet the...

This is the Pure Movies review of Hereafter, directed by Clint Eastwood and starring Matt Damon, Cécile De France, Bryce Dallas Howard, Thierry Neuvic, Ferguson Reid, Derek Sakakura, Jay Mohr and Richard Kind. A film tied to three interconnecting stories, Hereafter is a meditation on what happens to us after we die. It kicks off in spectacular fashion. French TV news presenter Marie (Cécile de France) is on tropical island holiday when a dramatic tsunami strikes. She drowns, but is revived – dying just long enough to get a glimpse of what may await her on the other side. The experience changes her outlook on life, leaving her searching for answers.

To celebrate the release of Clint Eastwood and Matt Damon’s new film Hereafter, in cinemas 28th January, Warner Bros. Pictures and HeyUGuys are offering two lucky winners the chance to get their hands on a Clint Eastwood definitive DVD collection box-set.
Oscar® winner Matt Damon (“Good Will Hunting,” “Invictus”) stars in “Hereafter,” directed by Academy Award® winner Clint Eastwood (“Million Dollar Baby,” “Unforgiven”) from a screenplay by two time Oscar® nominee Peter Morgan (“Frost/Nixon,” “The Queen”).
“Hereafter” tells the story of three people who are haunted by mortality in different ways. Matt Damon stars as George, a blue-collar American who has a special connection to the afterlife. On the other side of the world, Marie (Cécile de France), a French journalist, has a near-death experience that shakes her reality. And when Marcus (Frankie/George McLaren), a London schoolboy, loses the person closest to him, he desperately needs answers.

The first images for Behind The Walls have surfaced on the film’s Official Facebook Page, and they look pretty neat! If you haven’t heard about the film, I’ve included the synopsis below as well. It was written and directed by Pascal Sid and Julien Lacombe. It stars Laetitia Casta, Thierry Neuvic, Roger Dumas and Jacques Bonnaffé.
Centre of France, 1922. Suzanne, a young novelist lacking inspiration decides to isolate herself in the countryside to write her new book. As Suzanne discovers a sealed-up room in the basement of her house, she starts writing oddly easily. Visions and nightmares soon strike her while the villagers grow worried as several little girls mysteriously disappear…

Some production art for the upcoming film Behind The Walls 3D has been discovered on the official Facebook page. The artwork is simply stunning, and looks like a trip into a gothic wonderland of horror where everything that creeps also wants to eat little girls, and specters crawl down darkened halls. The film is directed by Pascal Sid and Julien Lacombe and stars Laetitia Casta, Thierry Neuvic, and Roger Dumas. Behind The Walls 3D will be out in France sometime in 2011 and looks like it is definitely one worth peering into the cracks of the wall for. Synopsis: “Centre of France, 1922. France is well into the process of producing its first ever theatrical movie in 3D and being French its no surprise it’ll be nothing as gauche as a CGI action fest, or a blue skinned aliens for them, instead we have the dark supernatural thriller Derrière les murs (aka ‘Behind The Walls’) - starring Laetitia Casta, Thierry Neuvic and Roger Dumas - to look forward too, from directors Julien Lacombe and Pascal Sid. The movie is still well into post production, so not much to see as yet, but one nugget we’ve found is a first picture from the film. Not a lot to go on granted, but we’re getting a vibe very similar to Alejandro Amenábar’s superb haunted house frightener ‘The Others’ off of this – which is no bad thing if true. Behind The Walls is due to open in France in late spring and...

Warner Bros. have just sent us the new UK poster for Matt Damon’s new movie, Hereafter which sees him back together with director, Clint Eastwood. They most recently worked together on Invictus which didnt do that well in the Us but I really enjoyed.

The stunning-honey French fashion model and actress Laetitia Casta (below) has wrapped her performance in the latest French mystery thriller 'Behind the Walls'. The Julien Lacombe and Pascal Sid helmed (and written) project, which will arrive in 3D, has revealed very 'run-of-the-mill' looking teaser art at this year's American Film Market event. Casta is joined by fellow cast members Thierry Neuvic, Roger Dumas, Jacques Bonnaffe, Anne Benoit, Anne Loiret and Emma Ninucci. You can check out the new art below. 'A period piece set against the backdrop of France in 1922, Casta plays Suzanne, a young novelist lacking inspiration decides to isolate herself in the countryside to write her new book. As Suzanne discovers a sealed-up room in the basement of her house, she starts writing odd prose. Clint Eastwood’s Hereafter starts big. It opens with a large scale tsunami sequence that’s shot with great spectacle and energy. The camera stays at street level as the waves come rushing closer, then batter and devour a main character. This opening certainly grabs the audience’s attention and makes them sit up straight wanting more. Unfortunately, they’ll be kept waiting as this movie quickly turns contemplative, then new-agey, then ultimately inert. Eastwood has always been an introspective, mature director and his meditative take on life after death is at odds with this grand opening and audiences probably won’t help being felt a bit let down by the slow, talky drama that follows. Eastwood is a strong storyteller and though Hereafter has its strengths, it’s a misfire by his standards and one film that may have trouble connecting with mainstream audiences.

Director: Clint Eastwood Writer: Peter Morgan Starring: Matt Damon, Cécile De France, Thierry Neuvic, Jay Mohr, Bryce Dallas Howard, Frankie McLaren, George McLaren Oh Clint, what strange land hath thou taken us to? It’s a land of bizarre ghostly figures, depressed clairvoyants, and British children who wander aimlessly under the gray skies of London. It’s a place of tsunamis juxtaposed against calm, comfortable French restaurants, with French people speaking smartly with subtitles. It’s a place of grown men eating (and cooking) alone. It’s a purposeful place, but oddly lacking purpose. It’s a land of talented actors speaking lines that leave their tongues stuck to the roof of their mouths. Oh Clint, what hast thou done! Yes, here in the Hereafter, even Matt Damon cannot slay the mighty beast. Here, Matt plays George, a lonely psychic, who is afraid to touch another for fear of channeling their dead relatives.

Warner Bros. Pictures has released a slew of new photos from Clint Eastwood’s Hereafter. Anyone can tell you I was a big, enthusiastic fan of Invictus. This is director Clint Eastwood's latest production and filming partially took place in London, England. Hereafter bridges the spiritual realm to film through the use of nres (near death experiences). The first poster for the film seems to echo this theme, as a blue background highlights an angelic figure hoisted in the sky. Warner Bros Pictures has released their film schedule for the upcoming fall/holiday season. The one that I found the most curious was this first photo of Matt Damon and Bryce-Dallas Howard in Clint Eastwood’s Hereafter. Variety’s article from 2008 said, “it is described as in the vein of The Sixth Sense.” I’m very interested to see what Eastwood does with this genre.
The other films in the WB press kit are The Town, Legend Of The Guardians: The Owls Of Gahoole, Life As We Know It, Hereafter, Due Date, Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows – Part 1, and Yogi Bear.
The Town (Crime Drama) September 17:

Bryce Dallas Howard and Matt Damon in Hereafter
Photo: Warner Bros. Warner Bros. has unveiled a new batch of images from their upcoming Fall 2010 slate including looks at Ben Affleck's The Town, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1, Zack Snyder's owl movie Legend of the Guardians, Life as We Know It, the new Todd Phillips comedy Due Date and Yogi Bear. However, the most guarded film of their upcoming list of films is Clint Eastwood's new drama Hereafter and just above is the first look at Bryce Dallas Howard and Matt Damon in the new flick.
Despite early reports calling it a supernatural film in the vein of The Sixth Sense I was told by Warner Bros. only yesterday they will be referring to it strictly as a drama as the film tells the story of three people who are haunted by mortality in different ways.

In addition to the previously announced titles, Tiff just keeps adding more great stuff to their line-up.
The most recent announcement (I’m sure there are more to come), includes a couple of interesting titles along with a couple of heavy weights. Up front is Danny Boyle’s story of survival 127 Hours starring James Franco, Casey Affleck’s bizarre biopic/drama I’m Still Here (trailer), Guillem Morales’ great looking Spanish thriller Julia’s Eyes (trailer) and Matt Reeves’ remake Let Me In (trailer).
Other titles which sound promising include Mitch Glazer’s Passion Play, a fable starring Mickey Rourke and sex bomb Megan Fox, Álex de la Iglesia’s insane parody about the Spanish Civil War with clowns The Last Circus and Benoît Jacquot’s Deep in the Woods.
All of the new additions after the break.

Toronto -- The Toronto International Film Festival turned up the star wattage Tuesday with bookings for the latest work by Clint Eastwood, Danny Boyle and John Carpenter.
A long-awaited theatrical release date for Miramax's "Last Night" may also be at hand with Toronto giving a plum Roy Thomson Hall slot to the Keira Knightley and Eva Mendes-starring romancer from director Massy Tadjedjin.
Knightley and Sam Worthington play a married couple spending a night apart as the husband takes a business trip with a colleague, played by Mendes, to whom he's attracted. Meanwhile, while he resists temptation, his wife encounters a past lover, played by Guillaume Canet.
Fox Searchlight Pictures' "127 Hours," from director Danny Boyle and starring James Franco, is also Toronto-bound in the Special Presentations sidebar.
