Ragtime (1981)
Tony Awards: We predict the winners
Ragtime (1981)
Here’s the easiest prediction to make about this year’s Tony Awards, which will be presented June 13 at NYC’s Radio City Music Hall: Host Sean Hayes will almost certainly make some reference to the hullabaloo about being too gay to play a straight man in the musical Promises, Promises. The CBS broadcast will also have an excuse to present a production number from his show even though it didn’t snag a nomination for Best Revival of a Musical. (There’s talk that the show will open with a medley of “pop songs you might not know are on Broadway.

A Salute to the 64th Annual Tony Awards
Though the economy was still in dire straits, Broadway carried on during the 2009-10 season, with visits from such high-voltage marquee names as Hugh Jackman, Daniel Craig, Christopher Walken, Denzel Washington, Jude Law, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Liev Schreiber, and Scarlett Johansson. A little group called Green Day rocked Broadway's world with the stage adaptation of the band's hit album "American Idiot," Twyla Tharp paid tribute to Frank Sinatra in "Come Fly Away," and Elvis, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Carl Perkins formed a "Million Dollar Quartet." "Fela!," Bill T. Jones' combination dance party, concert, and musical biography, transferred to the Main Stem from its Off-Broadway run, as did Geoffrey Nauffts' tender and moving play "Next Fall." "Red" and "Time Stands Still" offered searing portraits of artists coping with crises, while Sarah Ruhl's "In the Next Room or the vibrator play" captured the repressive Victorian era. Broadway fare also...

"Brothers & Sisters" Episode 424: “On the Road Again”
This recap is a love letter to Geoffrey Nauffts.

Nauffts co-wrote this week’s episode, along with David Marshall Grant (currently B&S’ showrunner). Like Grant, Nauffts is an actor turned playwright, and the fact that his very first play, Next Fall, not only was produced but made it to Broadway And is up for a Tony would normally be the kind of success story that would have me seething with envy. Except I saw Next Fall and could only admire it.

Next Fall explores how a gay couple grapple with their religious differences, and I was impressed how it depicted a very real issue (I know many gay people who have struggled over aspects of their religious affiliations) that we’ve never seen addressed on stage before.

This week’s Brothers & Sisters does something similar, bringing up very real issues that I can’t remember another show addressing in quite this way before.

Will 'Next Fall' be the next Tonys champ as best play?
Patrick Heusinger
There's real drama looming over the Tonys race for best play. Pundits can make a good case for any of the four nominees to win: "In the Next Room (or, the Vibrator Play)," "Next Fall," "Red" or "Time Stands Still."

Many are betting on "Next Fall," the tale of ill-starred gay lovers -- one a young, devout Christian (Patrick Heusinger), the other an older, cynical Jewish chap (Patrick Breen). The New York Times calls "Next Fall" a "a smart, sensitive and utterly contemporary New York comedy (that's) looking remarkably vital. . . . The funniest heartbreaker in town."

Here's our chat with writer Geoffrey Nauffts and director Sheryl Kaller. Elton John is one of the producers, by the way.

Tony Nominations Or, Hollywood on Stage
There are so many movie and television faces nominated for the Tony Award this year that one begins to worry about how any stateside stage actor can earn a living. The answer, appears to be get famous in another medium in order to get plum stage roles.

Jude Law (Hamlet) is equally at home on screen or stage

This can work against the audience, this self destructive drive to only see the familiar, if it robs them of great stage trained actors in meaty roles. But thankfully this isn't a problem with actors who are adept at changing their "scale" for any medium. Take The Lovely Laura Linney, for instance, who no one would dare accuse of being out of her element whether she's on the silver screen, the living room telly or treading the boards on Broadway.

Lead Actor in a Play

Jude Law, Hamlet

Alfred Molina, Red

Liev Schreiber,...

'Fela!,' La Cage' top Tony noms
One has to hand it to the Tony nominators: They didn't follow conventional wisdom nor did they particularly pay heed to commercial considerations.

Indeed, some of the biggest noms went to shows that are either long gone ("Ragtime," "Finian's Rainbow," "In the Next Room, or the Vibrator Play," "Time Stands Still") or lagging at the boxoffice ("Fela!" "Memphis," "Next Fall," "Million Dollar Quartet").

The biggest surprises Tuesday were the omissions.

"The Addams Family," the most successful new musical of the season, was thoroughly dissed, failing to get noms for best musical, for its stars Nathan Lane or Bebe Neuwirth, or even for its production design. And though it did get one for original score, that's not exactly a coup in a season in which only one other musical, "Memphis," even had one. The category had to be embarrassingly filled out with the forgettable music from "Enron" and Branford Marsalis' incidental music for "Fences.

The Commish: Win The First Season of the Michael Chiklis Series on DVD
Years before we knew Michael Chiklis as tough-as-nails Vic Mackey on The Shield, he starred in a very different cop series for ABC.

The Commish revolves around a no-nonsense police commissioner named Tony Scali (Chiklis). A former Brooklyn cop, he's respected by his officers and the small-town community of Eastbridge for his unorthodox methods. Even more important than his job though is his family at home. The series also features Theresa Saldana, Kaj-Erik Eriksen, John Cygan, Melinda McGraw, Geoffrey Nauffts, Nicholas Lea, Gina Belafonte, and David Paymer.

The ABC drama ran for five seasons and 94 episodes, from 1991 until 1996. Interestingly, the show spent its run between Thursday and Saturday nights -- the most-watched and least-watched nights of television today.

The Commish: The Complete First Season has just been released on DVD and the set includes all 21 episodes as...

G.W. to the Troops: "Do Ask! Do Tell!"
Last Wednesday, at precisely 10:04 p.m., G.W. waded into the scrum at the Royalton Hotel, inside its long lobby that swarmed with theater folk awash in bubbly. Broadway hoi polloi at the behest of Sir Elton John and his “husband,” David Furnish, had gathered here—at what historians consider the very first boutique hotel ever created—to celebrate the opening night of Next Fall, the compelling new play by Geoffrey Nauffts. “The play is superb,” declared our fabulous new acquaintance, the investment banker/fashion bessie Irene Walsh, who saw it on opening night, at the Helen Hayes Theater. Irene, the divine, was in the company of G.W.’s much loved and respected peer Roger Friedman. “George, the Vanity Fair Oscar party was really good this year,” he said. “I was one of the last to leave.” Good for you, Roger. This year G.W. didn’t make the trip.

Maddie Corman
Next Fall on Broadway
Maddie Corman
One powerful message of the play Next Fall is contained in its title. Simply, don't put things off: life may not wait till next fall. Or, as one character Holly (Maddie Corman) says, "One minute you are doing the crossword puzzle, and the next you are here." Here is a hospital waiting room where Luke, a friend and employee at her flower shop, languishes in a coma after a hideous accident. As hope for Luke remains uncertain, we see him in flashback played energetically by Patrick Heusinger in this multilayered play by Geoffrey Nauffts and directed by Sheryl Kaller that had its world premiere in a sold-out Naked Angels production last summer. Extended several times, Next Fall --with its original ensemble cast --is now on Broadway in the intimate Helen Hays Theater. In the spirit of the title, see it now. Waiting...

Andrew Lloyd Webber
This week saw the London opening of Love Never Dies, Andrew Lloyd Webber's eagerly awaited sequel to The Phantom of the Opera. EW's Mark Shenton described the show as "frequently clunky and clumsy," with a score "that seems like a rehashed parade of pastiche and throbbing crashing-chord melodies." (He gives it a C.) Back in New York City, a new musical by John Kander and Frank Ebb (the renowned composer and lyricist of classics such as Chicago and Cabaret) opened Off Broadway: The Scottsboro Boys depicts the true story of nine African Americans falsely convicted of raping two white women.
