A romantic comedy about an Israeli-Palestinian couple based on the real life story of creators Nayef Hammoud and Gal Rosenbluth, the development series “Non-Issue” won the Paramount+ drama prize at this year’s Mia Market, which wrapped its ninth edition on an optimistic note. Of course, well before Friday’s closing award ceremony, the heartbreaking crisis in the Middle East cast a heavy pall over an otherwise ebullient audiovisual market, often informing conversations professional and otherwise.
While a number of industry execs were unable to travel from Israel, and though slated speaker Ari Folman was even forced to cancel a remote interview, attendance was otherwise up across the board. Rome’s Mia Market Boss on Exploring “Creative Possibilities” of Technology and What Is New This Year
Rome’s Mia Market has become one of the most important events on the schedule of International producers and developers. Aside from its market-oriented aspect, Mia aims to be, first and foremost, a place where the most influential people in the audiovisual sector can meet.
The goal for this year’s edition, which opened on Monday and runs through Friday, Oct. 13, is to expand the scope and increase the event’s range and offerings.
As per usual, content is the starting point. For this reason, further visibility and resources have been allotted to the Mia Xr section that explores and delves into the technological innovations in the movie and TV industries, ranging from special effects to virtual reality.
The same vision to enrich and enhance the content offered has been extended to the animation subdivision, which launched last year with success. “We wanted to try and explore the creative possibilities that technology can give producers,...

Spoilers for "Thor: Love and Thunder" ahead.
In "Thor: Love and Thunder," the children of New Asgard are kidnapped by Gorr the God Butcher (Christian Bale). When Thor (Chris Hemsworth) and company come to rescue them, he grants them all powers from Zeus' (Russell Crowe) lightning bolt to help fight back. It's a lovely scene, reinforcing the idea that anyone can be a hero.
The crew came up with an interesting technique to film that scene, according to an interview for Marvel Entertainment's YouTube channel with Jake Morrison, the film's visual effects supervisor. It involved lighting the scene in such a way that they...

Thanks to Taika Waititi and “Thor: Love and Thunder,” Ilm’s game-changing StageCraft LED volume is now a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s technological arsenal. Getting its hands on the latest virtual production tool marks a big step forward for Marvel: No longer exclusively reliant on blue or green screen backgrounds, the studio can now use StageCraft’s more sophisticated and flexible wraparound wall to shoot actors against a blend of practical and virtual environments rendered in real time. For “Love and Thunder,” this included the jungle oasis where Gorr (Christian Bale) becomes the God Butcher, the Battle of Indigarr with Thor (Chris Hemsworth) and The Guardians of the Galaxy, and the Bifrost Goat Boat scene between Thor and Jane/Mighty Thor (Natalie Portman).

Have you ever wondered how the artists of Marvel Studios were able to make a giant fight between two impossible beings look fairly realistic? Now that Thor: Ragnarok is headed for release on DVD and Blu-ray (pre-order here), we’re finding out all about the challenging process behind one of the most iconic scenes of the entire franchise – the gladiator contest featuring the God of Thunder and the Incredible Hulk.
In the green corner, we have a scientist who was once subjected to so much gamma radiation that he developed a Hulk side – turning into an eight-foot-six-inch bouncing rage monster when angry. Evidently, he’s been perpetually cross since the events of Avengers: Age Of Ultron, as he seems to have been in his Hulk state the whole time.
In the icy blue corner, we have Thor, the Asgardian God and heir to the throne as ruler of the Nine Realms.

The new and improved Hulk in Thor: Ragnarok was a genius re-invention of the character. No longer a strictly CGI character, the special effects team turned the not-so-jolly green giant into a walking, talking and emotional character. VFX supervisor Jake Morrison (Marvel Studios’ “Ant-Man,” “Thor: The Dark World”) explains how the effects were achieved for the new Hulk and why Cate Blanchett didn't have to bother with costumes changes and that thorny headdress.

The (Norse) mythology surrounding Chris Hemsworth’s God of Thunder has been explored a lot over the trilogy of Thor movies we’ve seen so far. One of the most important players conspicuous by their absence, though, is Beta Ray Bill, a fan favourite ally of the Asgardian’s from the comics. That’s unfortunate, too, as audiences would love to see the character on the big screen and, as it turns out, so would at least one important figure behind the scenes of the McU.
While talking with CinemaBlend, Thor: Ragnarok‘s VFX lead Jake Morrison expressed a desire to have Beta Ray Bill brought into the franchise in the future. As a horse-faced alien, the character would likely be created via CGI and Morrison would love to get a chance to work on him. In particular, he’d like to recreate a classic comic book moment.

Director Jaume Collet-Serra and Dwayne Johnson are currently prepping up to start shooting Disney's Jungle Cruise in Atlanta. We don't really have a lot of details on the film other than that it is based on Disneyland's classic adventure ride.
Cb recently had the opportunity to interview Jake Morrison, who is the visual effects supervisor on the film and he gave a little insight into what the film will entail. The most important thing that he mentioned was that this will be Johnson's Indiana Jones film.
"I mean I've got to say, I'm incredibly excited about the whole thing, it's really like Dwayne is in a new Indiana Jones film. It's Dwayne at his best, and that is a man with some severe charisma. And then we're putting him on this huge adventure, and they've just literally announced the female lead in the picture is Emily Blunt. So,...

Tho:r Ragnarok has come and it's amazing. Everyone agrees... except for those who don't, and those are far and few. I thought it was amazing. I loved the characters and especially the whole look of the character designs. It's even cooler to see how they evolved over the process. Andy Park who worked on the pre-production concept art has recently shared some of his art on Twitter. And it's pretty rad.
One of the images features a worn down Thor. He looks tired, and beat. While it looks great, and very rustic, I really like that they cut his hair and made him more lively. I feel like Thor has evolved as a character from just a stupid bro, to a mopey bro, to a fully fleshed out friend. It's like a guy you can't stand in high school was humbled by the real world and became a cool guy...

A bunch of sequels and a remake are vying for the Best Visual Effects Oscar this year, many of them from Disney, including Bill Condon’s live-action remake of Disney’s classic “Beauty and the Beast,” Marvel’s “Thor: Ragnarok” and Lucasfilm’s upcoming “Star Wars: The Last Jedi.”
Three Fox films offer stunning VFX: “War for the Planet of the Apes,” which advances its visual effects technology over the last Matt Reeves installment featuring Weta Digital’s astonishing array of digital apes led by performance capture master Andy Serkis as Caesar, could win Weta’s Joe Letteri (“Avatar,” “King Kong,” “The Lord of the Rings”) his fifth Oscar. In transforming Chris Hemsworth’s Thor into a funnier and more relatable Avenger, Taika Waititi had fun pitting him against Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk and pairing him up with the wisecracking, scene-stealing rock man Korg, which was mocapped and voiced by the New Zealand director himself.
“Thor goes through this crazy world with all these bizarre characters,” Watiti said. “I thought it would be cooler to make the matchup with Hulk a part of the gladiatorial battle, and keep it within that circle. And I wanted Hulk to be less wild and all over the place because in the other films it’s like he has no control over his body. So they were jumping and punching in the arena rather than flying around.”

A group of British students on a school trip to Parliament found themselves caught up in the response to Wednesday’s deadly terror attack in London — and they responded with a song.
The group of 53 children at the St John & St Francis Church School headed out for the Palace of Westminster on Wednesday morning, but were kept inside as the violence and its aftermath unfolded, according to officials.
“We’ve all been sent to the central part of the Houses of Parliament. We’re all together and happy,” the school tweeted, adding, “We’re lightening the mood with a good sing song.

It’s fairly amazing that it took five men — Nicolas Wright, James A. Woods, Dean Devlin, Roland Emmerich, James Vanderbilt – to conceive the story and pen the script to Independence Day: Resurgence when it trod no new ground and felt like the worst rehash of the original film and many other Sf flicks from the preceding twenty years.
The original ID4 was an unassuming popcorn thriller with implausible science and predictable actions but leavened with strong performances and quirky, fun characters. They were having fun fighting the alien invaders and we had memorable lines and Will Smith punching out an alien with “Welcome to Earth”.
Somehow, these five, including Devlin and Emmerich who gave us the first, left out the fun. Instead, for two hours we see a mix of familiar and unfamiliar figures watch an even larger alien ship arrive, intent on destroying Earth either as an act of...

When your sequel doesn’t hit until the same year as the 20th Anniversary Blu-Ray release, you either have a great idea for exploring characters and themes that takes advantage of that delay, or you figure you can suck more money out of something people have had time to forget.
Independence Day: Resurgence is the worst sort of effort toward a grab at money, and is so far on the lazy side of the spectrum that it becomes embarrassing self-parody.
Twenty years after the events that nearly destroyed the world, we find ourselves in hot water again, as the aliens are knocking on our door again. The ships are bigger, merely to emphasize the fact that despite taking advantage of alien technology, we still have no chance of winning, the stakes are higher (well… they’re the same, I guess), and all the dramatic entanglements are powered by the countdown we’re constantly watching.

I’m a huge fan of director Roland Emmerich’s first Independence Day film and I was so excited to see Independence Day: Resurgence. The trailers made the film look like it would at least be fun and provide some form of entertainment. I’m always trying to find the good in movies, and if you’ve read any of my reviews, you know I can be easily entertained. But there are some things I just can’t let slip by, and there are some movies that just piss me off because of a filmmaker’s laziness in telling their stories and building their characters. Independence Day: Resurgence is one of those films.
Fans like myself waited over twenty years for a sequel to Independence Day and I felt like we were given an utter piece of crap. No wonder Will Smith didn’t want to have anything to do with the sequel!

Somehow – despite Roland Emmerich’s obsessive focus on Earth’s destruction – Independence Day found a way to bottle raw human fortitude in a way that its sequel, Independence Day: Resurgence, clumsily fumbles. In the most generic, fan-servicing, sequelitis-stricken way, this sci-fi doomsday franchise charges back into theaters like a bull in an intergalactic China shop. The entire films is basically one big “Here we go again!” moment on repeat, as Emmerich prays that nostalgia is enough to distract from the nothingness that’s occurring on screen. Look! There’s a heroic poster of Will Smith! Or over there! It’s that crazy doctor who totally should be dead! And Jeff Goldblum! You guys still love him, right?!
Yes, Mr. Emmerich, we do still love Jeff Goldblum – but not when he’s reduced to making silly faces like a rejected Tim & Eric sketch. Granted, I’d pay good money for a...

Its reputation may be overinflated by millennials who subsist on a steady diet of their own petrified kitsch, but Emmerich’s war of the worlds has nevertheless come to represent a type of full-bodied studio spectacle for which we all ought to be nostalgic. "As you know, it has taken a huge effort to get a big military base on the moon..." 20th Century Fox has released a viral video for Independence Day: Resurgence that features some of the cast and lots of new footage. The video is designed like a news segment from the "United World News" channel, and first takes a look back at the devastating events of 1996, when the aliens first arrived. Then it jumps ahead to a segment with Jeff Goldblum playing David Levinson, now running "Esd" (Earth Space Defense), who discusses the technology they've borrowed to improve their defense systems. In addition, Jessie Usher as Dylan Hiller, Angelababy as Rain Lao, and Liam Hemsworth as Jake Morrison are also featured. This is pretty cool. Leave it to the Brits! The BAFTA nominations were announced and they gave us a slightly different look at the awards season! For instance, Tom McCarthy's "Spotlight," the leading Oscar contender in the U.S. just received 3 noms including Best Film, Supporting Actor for Mark Ruffalo and Original Screenplay. No Director nomination for McCarthy.
Meanwhile, Steven Spielberg's "Bridge of Spies," a handsomely-produced period piece led the pack along with Todd Haynes' "Carol," another handsomely-produced period piece. Both films garnered nine nominations each including Best Picture. "Bridge of Spies" and "Carol" will duke it out with "Spotlight," Alejandro Gonzales Inarritu's "The Revenant" (eight nominations), and Adam McKay's "The Big Short" (five nominations) for the Best Picture trophy.
So where's "Mad Max: Fury Road" and "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" you ask? They're relegated to the technical categories. Apparently, sequels, no matter how great they are, can't compete with originals.

What may come as a surprise to some is that Adam McKay’s comedy-drama about the 2008 financial crisis did rather well. It may have only received five nominations, but they were all major nods: Best Film, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Supporting Actor (Christian Bale), and Best Editing. “Scott, I’ve been watching you for a while now. You’re different. Now, don’t let anyone tell you that you have nothing to offer.” Ant-Man may feature a superhero who can shrink to microscopic sizes, but that unique ability could expand Marvel’s cinematic universe in a big way. Marvel has released the first trailer for Ant-Man, featuring a lot of screen time for Paul Rudd and Michael Douglas, while also teasing an impressive supporting cast.
Press Release – “Set for release in the United States on July 17, 2015, the film is directed by Peyton Reed (“Bring it On,” “The Break-Up”) and stars Paul Rudd (“I Love You Man,” “Role Models”) as Scott Lang aka Ant-Man, and Michael Douglas (“Behind The Candelabra,” “Wall Street”) as his mentor Dr. Hank Pym and Evangeline Lilly (“The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug,” “Lost”) as Hope Van Dyne, daughter of Hank Pym.

Batman has The Joker. Thor has Loki. Superman has Lex Luthor. Every hero needs a villain, and in Marvel’s upcoming film, Ant-Man, the opposition to the titular microscopic protagonist played by Paul Rudd is fittingly coined Yellowjacket. With fans waiting for the film’s first trailer to debut in the near future, new banner artwork has been unveiled to hold us over, offering the first look at the main antagonist.
As Marvel announced during their Hall H Comic-Con panel, Yellowjacket, aka Darren Cross, will be played by Corey Stoll (The Strain, This Is Where I Leave You, Midnight in Paris). Cross is a a former protégé of Hank Pym (the original Ant-Man, played by Michael Douglas), who takes a dark path after getting his hands on Pym’s shrinking suit technology. Yesterday marked the first day of principal photography for Ant-Man. If I’m to be honest, I’m still a bit bummed that Edgar Wright and Joe Cornish have left the project. I think their take on the Marvel Universe could have been one akin to James Gunn’s approach to Guardians of the Galaxy. Alas, we are still getting an Ant-Man film and the casting is pretty great. We also have a look at Paul Rudd as Scott Lang Aka Ant-Man.

The Academy has announced the new class of invited members for 2014 and, as is typical, many of which are among last year's nominees, which includes Barkhad Abdi, Michael Fassbender, Sally Hawkins, Mads Mikkelsen, Lupita Nyong'o and June Squibb in the Actors branch not to mention curious additions such as Josh Hutcherson, Rob Riggle and Jason Statham, but, okay. The Directors branch adds Jay and Mark Duplass along with Jean-Marc Vallee, Denis Villeneuve and Thomas Vinterberg. I didn't do an immediate tally of male to female additions or other demographics, but at first glance it seems to be a wide spread batch of new additions on all fronts. The Academy is also clearly attempting to aggressively bump up the demographics as this is the second year in a row where they have added a large number of new members, well over the average of 133 new members from 2004 to 2012. Michael Fassbender and Lupita Nyong’o of 12 Years a Slave were two of the 271 artists and industry leaders invited to become members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which determines nominations and winners at the annual Oscars. The entire list of Academy membership—which numbers about 6,000—isn’t public information so the annual invitation list is often the best indication of the artists involved in the prestigious awards process. It’s worth noting that invitations need to be accepted in order for artists to become members; some artists, like two-time Best Actor winner Sean Penn, have declined membership over the years.

Pop quiz: What do Chris Rock, Claire Denis, Eddie Vedder and Josh Hutcherson all have in common? Answer: They could all be Oscar voters very soon. The annual Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences invitation list always makes for interesting reading, shedding light on just how large and far-reaching the group's membership is -- or could be, depending on who accepts their invitations. This year, 271 individuals have been asked to join AMPAS, meaning every one of them could contribute to next year's Academy Awards balloting -- and it's as diverse a list as they've ever assembled. Think the Academy consists entirely of fusty retired white dudes? Not if recent Best Original Song nominee Pharrell Williams takes them up on their offer. Think it's all just a Hollywood insiders' game? Not if French arthouse titans Chantal Akerman and Olivier Assayas join the party. It's a list that subverts expectation at every turn.
