Doctor Who Season 2, Episode 5 Features The Surprise Return Of The Doctor You Forgot
Image
This article contains spoilers for "Doctor Who" season 2, episode 5, "The Story & The Engine."

"Doctor Who" season 2, episode 5 -- titled "The Story & The Engine" -- continues the show's current trend of combining copious winks and nudges with genuinely heartfelt stories that are the cornerstone of showrunner Russell T Davies' tenure. This time, the 15th Doctor (Ncuti Gatwa) finds himself in Lagos. There, his friend Omo's (Sule Rimi of "Andor" and "The Day of the Jackal" fame) barbershop has been taken over by the mysterious and hostile Barber and his accomplice, Abena. After the Doctor enters the shop and finds that he and several locals have been trapped inside and have to fuel the Barber's mysterious machines with their stories, the plot truly kicks in.

The Barber first attempts to introduce himself as the God of Stories, which would imply that he's the newest member of the ever-expanding Pantheon of Discord. However,...

'Doctor Who' Season 15's Audience Score Bounces Back After Early Review Bombing
Image
If you talk to some, Doctor Who simply hasn't been the same since Peter Capaldi and Steven Moffat left in 2017. Since then, dropping viewing figures — albeit with a universal shift in the way we consume television — and a decline in critical reception have seen the sci-fi series on shakier ground than ever before. Still, the return of Russell T. Davies to the helm and a big budget partnership with Disney looked to steady the ship, but certain metrics would lead you to believe that isn't true.

For The Doctor (Ncuti Gatwa) and Belinda (Varada Sethu), their currently airing Season 2 might be receiving top-tier critical ratings, but most would point to the show's Rotten Tomatoes audience rating to prove it is "beyond repair" and requires cancellation. However, when looking closer at this score and the reviews that accompanied it, it seems the "anti-woke" brigade had added the timey-wimey series to their review bombing target list,...

‘Doctor Who:’ How Varada Sethu Became an Unlikely New Companion
Image
“Doctor Who” has returned.

The legendary British sci-fi series, which first debuted back in 1963 and ran until 1989 before being resurrected, in earnest, in 2005, has just started a new season on Disney+ and the BBC. It is the second season of the newly co-produced series, with the effervescent Ncuti Gatwa returning as the titular Doctor, alongside executive producer and head writer Russell T. Davies. Millie Gibson also returns as Ruby Sunday, the previous season’s companion. But this year she is joined by Varada Sethu as companion Belinda Chandra.

But wait. Didn’t Sethu already appear in the series? In last season’s Steven Moffat-penned “Boom?”

Well, yes.

“One day, we started looking for Belinda. And we did audition a lot of people. We must have had about 30 different auditions, and in the middle of that process, I was mid-edit on ‘Boom,’ and all of a sudden I went, Well,...

'Bear Fruit a Long Time in the Future': Doctor Who Boss Teases Show's Future Beyond Season 2 Amid Cancelation Rumors
Image
Doctor Who showrunner Russell T Davies has confirmed he's working on ideas beyond the show's current second season. There have been rumors in recent months that Doctor Who could be canceled following the conclusion of its deal with Disney+.

Speaking to Parade, Davies confirmed that he has ideas for where Doctor Who could go in a potential third season — as well as concepts that could come to fruition years from now.

Russell T Davies Teases the Future of Doctor Who Beyond Season 2

"We'll always look ahead to the future if we get the chance to keep running," he said. "I've got ideas. 'I think I'll do that near [Season] 4 or 5.' And that's always the way I've worked on things."

The writer-producer then joked that he can promise Doctor Who fans that there will be "amazing stuff at the end of Season 4" if he's given the chance to continue with the show.

The Real Reason David Tennant Left ‘Doctor Who’ Mid-Season
Image
Imagine having the ability to travel through time and space, not in a flashy spaceship or a futuristic pod, but in a blue British police box – Yep, that’s Doctor Who for you. Even though the protagonist travels through space, it is not all about guns and lasers but more about cleverness and beating aliens using a sonic screwdriver.

When I first heard about the show, going with the title, I was expecting hospital scrubs and emergency room meltdowns, and if you clicked on the show thinking the same, you might not get what you came for, but it won’t leave you disappointed. The show first aired in 1963 and has been going on for decades; it is generally hard for shows to run this long due to the original cast leaving the show and losing its value. But that is where the narration comes in.

A still from the...

Ncuti Gatwa Reacts to Rumors of His Doctor Who Series Getting Canceled After 2 Seasons
Image
Doctor Whostar Ncuti Gatwa dismisses rumors of the series being canceled.

Speaking to Variety, Gatwa and co-star Varada Sethu were asked if they could respond to rumors that the hit sci-fi series had been canceled, which are largely based in the fact that only two seasons of the show were ordered. Gatwa replied by pointing back to all his favorite moments from the currently ongoing second season of his outing as Doctor Who before noting, "My head is full of Season 2, because it's been so epic. It's very ironic that in a show about time travel you can't talk about the future, but I can talk about Season 2 and how brilliant it is and how brilliant Varada is."

Ncuti Gatwa joined Doctor Who as the Fifteenth Doctor for the modern series' fourteenth season back in 2023, which also reintroduced the series' numbering system and reset the clock to Season 1. The current...

The Newest Doctor Who Companion Breaks From Franchise Tradition In One Key Way
Image
This article contains spoilers for "Doctor Who."

"The Robot Revolution," the latest "Doctor Who" season premiere, is a total mess. The bad guys are too silly, most of the jokes don't land, and the social commentary involving Alan (Jonny Green) -- the new companion Belinda Chandra's (Varada Sethu) former incel boyfriend, who's revealed to be the main villain -- is clunky and played-out. I have no problem with "Doctor Who" making fun of toxic men like Alan, but a little more competence in the writing department would've gone a long way here.

Perhaps the most disappointing part of "The Robot Revolution" is how Alan is defeated: Belinda presses her star certificate from the past up to her star certificate from the future; because it's the same object touching itself, this creates a time explosion that destroys Alan yet leaves Belinda untouched. Why? Since the Doctor (Ncuti Gatwa) was holding Belinda,...

"It's an Extra Little Spin": 'Doctor Who' Showrunner Explains Why There's a Connection Between Belinda and Mundy [Exclusive]
Image
It's happened before, and it will probably happen again at some point. Doctor Who has brought back an actor who previously played another character in the franchise. Last season on Doctor Who, fans met Varada Sethu as Mundy Flynn in the Steven Moffat-penned episode "Boom." It was later revealed that Sethu would be joining Ncuti Gatwa in the new season of Doctor Who. We've since learned that Sethu's character is named Belinda Chandra, but fans have not forgotten about Mundy Flynn, and they also haven't let showrunner Russell T. Davies forget about her either.

When speaking with Collider's Samantha Coley ahead of the upcoming season premiere on April 12, Davies expressed that he "might as well ride public opinion with this" — this meaning the Mundy-Belinda connection. He explained that bringing guest actors back as companions has been a Doctor Who tradition since long before Davies signed on as the showrunner.

'She Doesn't Want Any of It': Varada Sethu Opens Up on the New Doctor Who Companion Dynamic
Image
Doctor Who is about to welcome a new companion on board — Varada Sethu, who will be playing nurse Belinda Chandra. Her time in the Tardis is likely to be very different to that of her predecessor, Millie Gibson's Ruby Sunday.

Sethu is upholding a Doctor Who tradition first, though. She's appeared on the show before as a different character, in her case, soldier Mundy Flynn from the Steven Moffat-penned Season 14 episode "Boom." Other companions, such as Freema Agyeman (Martha) and Karen Gillan (Amy), have appeared on the show as minor characters before jumping into a main role. Even the twelfth Doctor, Peter Capaldi, did the same.

But that suits Sethu just fine. She's thrilled with having a new job on a show she's already familiar with. Although she was "more of a Star Wars girl" in her youth - and she in fact ended up on the Star...

This Puzzling Companion Question Has Plagued Doctor Who Fans for 62 Years (& It Finally Has an Answer)
Image
Doctor Whohas established a firm formula. Characters are introduced to act as the audience's point of view, embarking on various adventures with The Doctor and experiencing unusual aliens, planets, and cultures. Whether it's traveling through dimensions, or throughout Earth's timeline, the T.A.R.D.I.S. just isn't complete without a human companion. Some of the most popular characters from the show's history filled that space, with the likes of Amy Pond, Clara Oswald, and Rose Tyler each becoming iconic for their support of The Doctor. In many ways, they are the leads of the show in their own right, and thus, showrunners must put a great deal of thought into how they want to portray these characters. Get it wrong, and the series falls apart. The success of Doctor Who ultimately lives and dies by that chemistry between companion and Doctor.

Doctor Who boss Russell T Davies says there are "conversations" about his successor
Image
Russell T Davies has been a key figure in the Whoniverse since the show's revival in 2005. And while he might be back for the franchise's new era at Disney, he admits that his tenure is far from permanent. There are already conversations happening behind the scenes about who will take the reins when his time is up.

Doctor Who is going pretty steady at the moment. After a few years away from the show, Russell T Davies returned to the helm to usher in the latest Doctor, played by Ncuti Gatwa, along with a new and rejuvenated story. The Whoniverse is now being made with Disney cash, meaning a bigger budget and exposure to the gigantic Disney+ audience.

The rebooted season 1 aired in 2024 to mixed reviews. Episodes ranged from fantastic, like "73 Yards," to downright disappointing, like "Space Babies." That said, Ncuti Gatwa's electric portrayal of the Doctor was a hugely positive takeaway.

'It's a Tricky One': Doctor Who Showrunner Confirms Talks About His Replacement
Image
Doctor Who showrunner Russell T Davies has confirmed there are "conversations" under way about who will replace him on the show. Davies originally revived Doctor Who in 2005 and returned in 2023 for its 60th anniversary.

Davies previously confirmed that Disney's deal with the BBC was to co-produce three 60th anniversary specials and two full seasons with Ncuti Gatwa's Doctor, but that agreement will soon be coming to an end with the premiere of season 2 in April. There is no telling yet whether or not Disney will sign on to fund more episodes, or whether the BBC will have to look for new partners.

'Doctor Who' Could Undergo a Major Shake-Up After Season 15 on Disney+

Now the show's detractors have something else to fire off about, as it appears a change behind the scenes could be happening sooner rather than later.

Appearing on David Tennant Does a Podcast With…, showrunner Russell T Davies was asked by the Tenth Doctor if he feels like he's getting ready to put a successor in place for when he steps down. "I suppose," Davies answered, noting that he never thought he'd return for a second run on the series after leaving in 2010. He added:

Mark Gatiss On His Next Chapter: ‘Bookish’ Is Cozy Crime With An Edge
Image
Exclusive: Mark Gatiss is suitably on-trend with Bookish. He created and stars in the upcoming series as Gabriel Book, an eccentric bookshop owner and expert sleuth who helps the police solve tricky cases. The show has contained stories – one crime plays out over two episodes – and there are lighthearted elements and something comforting about the cluttered antiquarian bookshop, situated in a picture-perfect historic London lane. There is pre-launch buzz and international buyers have already started snapping up the series.

This is cozy crime, but as the show unfolds, Gatiss’ writing reveals layers and wrinkles that give the series teeth.

“It’s become a bit of an instant cliche, ‘cozy crime’, but I don’t think it has to be,” Gatiss tells Deadline. “It can be welcoming, and this has period elements that people love, and they love a world where you can’t solve crimes with computers. But it’s...

'Douglas Is Cancelled' Review: Steven Moffat's New Miniseries Is a Raw, Uncomfortable Newsroom Dramedy
Image
Those who hear the name Steven Moffat likely associate him most with his time as showrunner for the long-running BBC series Doctor Who; however, Moffat’s abilities as a creator of television have expanded beyond science fiction and into the realm of drama through his work on such shows as Sherlock and the most recent adaptation of The Time Traveler’s Wife. One of Moffat’s latest endeavors is Douglas Is Cancelled, written by Moffat and directed by Ben Palmer, has now landed on BritBox for Americans to enjoy. The four-part series is a raw, insidious depiction of workplace harassment driven by deeply-set misogynist ideals with a “boys will be boys” mentality.

“There’s never really quite enough money, but…”: Peter Capaldi’s One Glaring Criticism of Doctor Who Is Still Relevant Today
Image
For a long time, Doctor Who has been a stalwart expression of Hollywood’s undying love for sci-fi fantasy. The BBC series may have launched to a relatively smaller audience market, but it quickly grew in both fandom and ratings after the show’s unique story arc found a foothold in pop culture.

Doctor Who [Credit: BBC]

But despite the audience’s growing love for the cult-classic sci-fi show, Doctor Who suffers from one glaring shortcoming that was as prominent when it first launched in 2005 as it is today. And while the Doctor has shed his visage time and again and his companions have changed through the years, the showrunners behind Who refuse to change one troubling aspect in its creative structure.

Before he became famous for Doctor Who and Sherlock, Steven Moffat was well-known for comedy. Douglas Is Cancelled, which has its U.S. premiere on BritBox March 6, brings him back to his British television roots. It's like The Newsroom on steroids with a British flavor and an all-star cast. And it's a wickedly entertaining ride.

10 Things That Happen in Every Season of Modern Doctor Who

The entire premise of Doctor Who surrounds the idea of change. Not only can this character change their appearance and personality, but they also zoom across time and space, trying to stop the universe from turning to chaos. As such, with 60 years under its belt and a plethora of lucrative spin-offs, it's evident that Doctor Who performs best when it's constantly shifting and changing.

But, there are some things that remain exactly the same. When the show launched its reboot in 2005, it was keen to revolutionize the lore and shake off the shackles of the past. However, many fans will agree that the show still adheres to a range of hard and fast rules.

'I Was Really Stressed Out': Doctor Who Star Jodie Whittaker Reveals How Casting Backlash Impacted Her
Image
Former Doctor Who star Jodie Whittaker has opened up about the backlash to her casting as the 13th Doctor. The actress made TV history in 2017 when she became the first woman to play The Doctor.

While many Doctor Who fans and all of Whittaker's successors were publicly supportive, there was a significant wave of criticism for showrunner Chris Chibnall straying from having a white male play the Time Lord. Doctor Who quickly faced this criticism head on by casting Jo Martin as a secret incarnation of The Doctor, thus retroactively establishing that The Doctor could take the form of any sex or gender.

Ncuti Gatwa "quitting" Doctor Who?
Image
The modern incarnation of Doctor Who has been running since 2005. That's 20 years of whimsical, very British adventures through space and time. And the series can trace its roots all the way back to 1963, meaning the show has been on for over 70 years, with some notable breaks in there; Doctor Who was pretty much off the air between 1989 and 2005, with only a TV movie to keep things going in between.

It's possible we're heading towards another break. Ratings for the most recent season — which stars Ncuti Gatwa as the titular Time Lord — have been below the expectations of Disney, which partnered with the BBC to produce the newest episodes. Disney gave the show a big cash infusion, and they want to see results.

A new season of Doctor Who once again starring Gatwa will air later this year, but there are rumors now swirling that it will mark his final outing as the lead character.

"I'm Not Even Lying Anymore": 'Doctor Who's Controversial Former Showrunner Addresses Possible Return
Image
Well is he done or isn’t he? That’s the question fans have for former Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat who has been popping up more and more as part of the BTS of the long-running science fiction series. Moffat recently penned the 2024 Christmas Special “Joy to the World" and before that, returned to Doctor Who to write the episode "Boom" in Ncuti Gatwa's first season as The Doctor. Between Moffat's increased presence as well as a misunderstanding during the Doctor Who panel at San Diego Comic Con surrounding the rumor of a potential return of River Song (Alex Kingston), a Moffat-created character, fans are on the edge of their seats wondering if Moffat will continue to return to Doctor Who is some bigger way than an episode here or there.

5 Failed Attempts to Americanize Hit British Sitcoms
Image
Why in the name of all that’s funny do American producers try to adapt British sitcoms for U.S. audiences? The easy answer: Sometimes, it works. Norman Lear’s All in the Family and Sanford and Son were huge hits based on U.K. comedies, while the American version of The Office is arguably the most successful (or at least the most imitated) sitcom of the century.

But alongside those successes are a series of miserable failures that got lost in translation. Here are five examples of failed American versions of classic British sitcoms…

1 Fawlty Towers

In 2000, the British Film Institute ranked Fawlty Towers first on its list of the 100 Greatest British Television Programmes, and Channel 4 had Basil Fawlty number two on its list of the 100 Greatest Television Characters. With its simple premise — an uptight dolt runs a dysfunctional hotel — Fawlty Towers was an obvious choice for an American update.

15 Best British Crime Dramas, Ranked
Image
There's something about a British crime drama that can be so much more satisfying than its American counterpart. Perhaps it's the performances, often executed by trained thespians. Maybe it's their preference for season-long arcs, which offer variety and closure of American network procedurals while allowing room for larger-scale storytelling. I could be that everything just sounds cooler, smarter, and more intense in a British accent.

While we may have yet to solve this case, we have put together a suspect list of the 15 best British crime dramas ever made, and we've also ranked them based on overall quality. Hopefully for our readers in America or otherwise outside the United Kingdom, we can help you find your next binge-worthy mystery.

Benedict Cumberbatch Says He Would Return As Sherlock Holmes, Under One Condition

You will not believe it when I tell you the number of times an Avenger has also played Sherlock Holmes onscreen. Two! I know the number is not much, but it’s still impressive, right?

In his latest interview, Cumberbatch revealed that returning as the illustrious crime solver Sherlock Holmes is not completely off the table. There’s just one thing that the creators have to get right.

Benedict Cumberbatch has revealed the humorous ways his Marvel Cinematic Universe co-star Robert Downey Jr. would relieve tension on set. Downey would joke about the fact that both he and Cumberbatch portrayed Sherlock Holmes.

Downey portrayed Sherlock in the 2009 period film Sherlock Holmes, with Jude Law starring opposite him as Dr. John Watson. The film, which won Downey the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy, went on to spawn a sequel, Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows. Cumberbatch played the famous detective in the BBC's crime drama series created by Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss, with Martin Freeman as Watson. Cumberbatch's Sherlock was also successful, winning multiple Emmys and a Peabody Award.

5 Years Later, This Wildly Underrated Vampire Series Remains a Netflix Hidden Gem
Image
Released in early 2020, Netflix’s Dracula series offers a fresh and exciting take on one of literature’s most iconic and suave monsters. Created by Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss, the masterminds behind the groundbreaking BBC Sherlock series, this adaptation pulls viewers into a dark, suspenseful, horrifically gory, and often witty reinterpretation of Bram Stoker’s classic tale. From its stunning visuals to the commanding performances, especially from its lead actor, the show presents a unique balance of gothic horror and modern storytelling. Across three feature-length episodes, it explores the original classic stories and acts in three distinct stories.

At its core, Dracula isn’t just about fangs and blood, but - like its source material - a profound examination of humanity, fear, and the meaning of evil itself. Moffat and Gatiss’ flair for clever dialogue and inventive storytelling brings new dimensions to the narrative, while still honoring the spirit...

2020’s Netflix Dracula Miniseries From Doctor Who’s Creators Is Perfect To Watch If You Loved Nosferatu
Image
2020's Dracula miniseries is a totally fresh reimagining of Bram Stoker's original novel, making several huge changes from the book and giving the narrative an entirely different subtext. The project was fairly polarizing upon its release, but in the years since, audiences have begun to appreciate this series for its bold vision and clear storytelling voice. While other Dracula-inspired projects like Nosferatu have been huge box office hits thanks to their loyalty to the original text, 2020's Dracula is arguably a riskier and braver adaptation that isn't afraid to take some liberties with the story.

The Dracula miniseries comes from Doctor Who writers Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss, who bring their own witty creativity to this original script. The pair made a name for themselves on the BBC's iconic sci-fi drama, with Moffat serving as head writer between 2010 and 2017. This adaptation of Dracula stars John Heffernan as Jonathan Harker,...

What Went Wrong With BBC's Sherlock After 2 Amazing Seasons
Image
The BBC’s Sherlock is one of the best modern adaptations of Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes, but its quality decreased dramatically after its first two seasons. The Great Detective is one of the most popular and beloved literary characters, and as such, his stories have been adapted to other media for decades. The state of the rights to Sherlock Holmes has allowed artists to make many changes and additions to the characters and their stories, with some of them bringing the detective and company to the modern world – and falling into this category is the BBC’s Sherlock.

Created by Steven Moffat and Mark Gattis, Sherlock brought Holmes (Benedict Cumberbatch) and Dr. Watson (Martin Freeman) to modern-day London. Sherlock adapted some of Conan Doyle’s stories to modern technology and social issues, resulting in a fresh and engaging take on the beloved detective and his cases. Sherlock was...

Steven Moffat Explains Why Many 'Doctor Who' Companions Have Sad or Bittersweet Endings
Image
Doctor Who has seen many “companions” come and go in the last 60 years, but one trend that has taken hold of the modern era of Who is for those traveling with The Doctor to find their journeys coming to an end in an emotional and often tragic way. Former showrunner Steven Moffat has explained why The Doctor’s companions can’t simply move on like they did in some of the classic adventures.

Prior to the series revamp in 2005, companions tended to simply be replaced without too much reason. However, in recent years, several companions have died, others have been sent into alternate realities, and some have had their memories wiped for their own protection. According to Moffat in his interview with Radio Times, the reason for this is simple: they would not give up the chance to travel with The Doctor otherwise.

“In general terms, in the modern show we've always,...

Doctor Who Showrunner Explains Why Tragic Companion Exits Are Common In The Modern Era
Image
Former Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat breaks down why he feels the modern era of the sci-fi series has seen many of its companions face tragic but definitive endings. The writer first joined production on the television series with season 1 of the revival, and would take over from initial showrunner Russell T Davies in helming the show in 2010 until 2017. Moffat returned to writing for Doctor Who upon Davies returning to the role of showrunner, penning "Boom" for Doctor Who season 14 and the 2024 Christmas special "Joy to the World".

With another Moffat-penned Doctor Who adventure concluding with a bittersweet self-sacrifice from Nicola Coughlan's Joy, RadioTimes reports that the writer explained why so many companions face a tragic fate in the series. According to Moffat, he and Davies felt that they should offer a definitive reason to explain why anyone would decide to leave the Tardis:
