With three “Star Wars” series competing for the first time in the same Emmy season — especially in the craft races — how can the critically acclaimed yet underperforming “Andor” hold its own against “The Mandalorian” (which has amassed 14 craft wins in two seasons), let alone the Jedi-infused “Obi-Wan Kenobi” limited series?
Simple: By touting its strengths as one of the top 10 shows of 2022 (per IndieWire’s Ben Travers), as well as the best “Star Wars” since “Rogue One,” which first introduced Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) as part of the daring mission to steal the Death Star plans. In the “Andor” prequel, created by Tony Gilroy (who co-wrote “Rogue One”), we find out how Cassian went from world-weary scavenger to conniving Rebel spy.

Seeing the nifty grifter drama Sharper reminded me how rarely we encounter this kind of clever cat-and-mouse game that might fall into the noirish genre but really relies on diving into a world filled with characters who reveal slices of their lives that keep changing moment to moment. It is the kind of movie I find enormously difficult to review because its ultimate success for a viewer is just watching it unfold, beat by beat, never quite knowing exactly where it is heading but still glued to the screen to find out.

Sharper, an A24 and Apple TV+ psychological thriller starring Julianne Moore and Sebastian Stan, opens with a love story. A graduate student named Sandra (Briana Middleton) walks into a used bookstore in New York searching for a first edition copy of Zora Neale Hurston’s Their Eyes Were Watching God. The man working the counter, Tom (Justice Smith), is immediately smitten. He clumsily asks her on a date. She rejects him. Later that evening, Sandra returns to the store and timidly announces she’s changed her mind.
They fall into an easy romance: Mornings at the bookstore in Soho, afternoon walks in Washington Square Park, evenings spent cooking in Sandra’s apartment somewhere downtown. Tom and Sandra are a perfect match — a couple whose story would make for a great season of HBO’s Love Life. When Sandra vanishes, both Tom and the viewer are left to ask: What went wrong?...

Midway through Season 1 of “Andor” (streaming on Disney+), it’s very clear that this is like no other “Star Wars” series. Showrunner Tony Gilroy has us hooked with his gritty spy thriller-meets-wartime heist about scavenger-turned Rebel spy Cassian Andor (Diego Luna). It should come as no surprise given what Gilroy previously achieved as the screenwriter of “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” and “The Bourne Identity,” and as writer-director of “Michael Clayton.” His “Rogue One”origin story is the kind of nuanced, slow-burning character study “Star Wars” fans have been waiting for, filling in the details of a complex loner who will eventually light the fuse that ignites the rebellion against the Empire.
“Andor” is a Gilroy sibling collaboration, with Tony joined by screenwriter-director Dan (“Nightcrawler) and editor John (who also cut “Suicide Squad” and “Pacific Rim”). Although Lucasfilm and Disney+ initially wanted a five-season commitment, with each season spanning...

It’s checkmate on the first of three 2021 Creative Arts Emmy Awards shows, and Saturday was a huge evening for “The Queen’s Gambit.” The excellent Netflix limited series led by Anya Taylor-Joy has already won seven 2021 Emmys, technically (and in mostly technical categories).
(By the way, if you think three is a lot of shows to celebrate the television industry’s mostly below-the-line workers, 2020 had Five Creative Arts Emmys shows.)
Sunday’s first show began at 1 p.m. Pt. The second Sunday show, the final one of the two-day 2021 Creative Arts Emmys, begins at 5 p.m. Pt. That’s the presentation that has most of the mainstream categories that don’t fit in next week’s Primetime Emmys.
None of the three Creative Arts Emmys shows are being televised live. Next Saturday, a highlights show of sorts will air on Fxx starting at 8 p.m. Et/Pt.

Director Benjamin Caron and editor Yan Miles first began working together on the Season 1 episode of “The Crown” entitled “Assassins,” and they immediately hit it off.
“There was a familiarity,” Caron recalls of their first meeting. And now, “after five years together, I spend more time with Yan than I do my wife sometimes. I think there’s a very honest understanding of each other’s lives and that is part of the journey.”
A shared understanding of stories and an appreciation for the same films helped them cement a close collaboration that has gone on through each season of the Netflix royal family drama, most notably including Season 4’s “Fairytale” episode, as well as the upcoming Disney Plus “Star Wars” series “Andor.”

“I tend to cut with my heart and my instinct,” declares Emmy-winning editor Yan Miles (“Sherlock”) about editing “Fairytale,” the emotional third episode of the acclaimed fourth season of Netflix’s flagship drama “The Crown.” The episode introduces the audience to the compelling season-long story arc of the iconic Princess Diana, perhaps the most anticipated character on the show to date. “That’s kind of how I approach anything,” he says. One thing was pretty certain going into Friday night's Ace Eddie Awards ceremony honoring the best in editing: "Boyhood" was an odds-on lock to win the drama prize, and is, as ever, the frontrunner to win the Oscar in the category. So that happened. With "Birdman" tearing up the guild circuit, though, certainly plenty of us had an eye on it coming out on top in the comedy field, despite a lacking Oscar nod. Alas, that didn't happen. "The Grand Budapest Hotel," which was nominated for a film editing Oscar, came out on top. Cue more "what does it all mean" dialogue. It doesn't mean that much, though. There used to be a stat some folks would cling to re: Ace's place in the Best Picture build, but "12 Years a Slave" (nor "Gravity," for that matter) didn't win there. "The King's Speech" didn't win there. "No Country for Old Men,...

‘Boyhood’, ‘Grand Budapest’, ‘Lego Movie’ Score Big At 65th Ace Eddie Awards — Complete Winners List

Next week Ace will announce the Golden Eddie Filmmaker of the Year honoree and two Career Achievement honorees. For only the second time in the organization?s history, a tie resulted in an additional nominee in the Best Edited Feature Film (Dramatic) category creating six nominees, instead of five, indicating a tie in the number of votes for the fifth placing films. In 2013, a tie in the Best Edited Animated Feature Film resulted in four nominees, instead of the normal three nominees, in that category. The Ace Eddie Award nominees are listed below. The American Cinema Editors have taken the time when most of us are still enjoying a little bit of downtime before truly getting back into the swing of things this new year to announce the film and television nominees for the 65th Annual Ace Eddie Awards. Among the nominees are a couple of personal favorites in Whiplash (Tom Cross) and The Imitation Game (William Goldbenbrrg). I also think something must be said for Boyhood, though editing a film over the course of 12 years doesn't really leave much wiggle room. You're essentially editing 12 short films because once you're a year removed... you're a year removed. There are six nominees in the Best Edited Feature Film (Dramatic) category as a result of a tie providing for one additional nominee for the second time ever. Among the comedy/musical nominees I would like to believe The Grand Budapest Hotel (Barney Pilling) would be the front-runner,...

The movie that stitched 12 years of footage into a single narrative, “Boyhood,” has been nominated by the American Cinema Editors as the best-edited dramatic feature of 2014, Ace announced on Friday.
Other nominees for the top dramatic film honor at the awards known as the Ace/Eddies are “American Sniper,” “Gone Girl,” “The Imitation Game,” “Nightcrawler” and “Whiplash.” The category had six nominees instead of five because of a tie.

If you were looking for things to be shaken up a little bit in this year's Oscar race, the American Cinema Editors (Ace) offered a slight jolt Friday with the organization's 65th annual list of nominees for film editing. And if you were wondering if "Nightcrawler" might make a serious play on the circuit, well… I will say I was wondering that. So much so that I had a piece prepped focusing on its potential before today's announcement, which included the film in a dramatic feature category that featured a tie for the first time ever. (The animated field saw a tie yielding four nominees in 2012, while "Babel" and "The Departed" actually tied for the dramatic win in 2006, but there hasn't been a tie leading to an extra nominee in the dramatic or comedy/musical categories before.) Powerhouse Oscar players "Boyhood" and "The Imitation Game" unsurprisingly joined the party, and ditto Sundance hit "Whiplash.
