Dan Stevens, who has become synonymous with indie horror, is paired with icon Al Pacino for the ultimate exorcism film, “The Ritual.” The duo star as two priests who “face the ultimate test of faith,” as the logline teases. The film is based on the true story that was captured in 1935 book “Begone Satan!” about a Church-sanctioned exorcism. The original account of the events went on to inspire “The Exorcist” book and William Friedkin’s famed 1973 film that later spurred a franchise.
The official synopsis for “The Ritual” reads: “When the Church sanctions the exorcism of Emma Schmidt (Abigail Cowan), two priests — divided by doubt — must confront a force beyond comprehension… and their own faith.” Ashley Greene and Patricia Heaton co-star.
Pacino recently told Entertainment Weekly that after starring in “The Ritual,” he can finally watch Friedkin’s “The Exorcist.” Pacino worked with the late auteur on “Cruising,” which was...

The Absence of Eden strikes at the heart of the immigration debate roiling the country during a divisive election year. Zoë Saldaña stars as Esmeralda "Esme" Rojas, a Mexican woman forced to flee after killing a cartel member who tries to assault her. Garrett Hedlund co-stars as Shipp, an Ice (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) agent, in love with a possibly undocumented woman (Adria Arjona), and partnered with a vicious xenophobe (Chris Coy) who uses violence as a first response. The film is also written and produced by Saldaña's husband, Marco Perego, in his feature directorial debut.
Our conversation with Hedlund begins with his thoughts on a news story that made headlines shortly before the interview. A group of undocumented people rushed through razor wire at the border and toppled guards trying to stop them. Hedlund comments, "This film has characters that have chosen an occupation, Shipp in particular, with some...

Immigration has often been a topic that sparks strong emotions around the globe, and it is an especially hot topic this election season, particularly when you have a U.S. presidential candidate characterizing undocumented immigrants not as “human” but rather as “animals” and using phrases such as “they are poisoning the blood of our country” at campaign rallies. Now seems to be a perfect time for a powerful new film, The Absence of Eden, to perhaps help lower the temperature and show the human side of those trying to cross the border into a new and hopefully better life.
None other than Martin Scorsese has lent his name to this film by signing on as an executive producer, and it represents the first feature for artist and producer Marco Perego who also happens to be the husband of the film’s star Zoe Saldaña. Perego says it was all inspired...

Fine performances and powerful visuals only partially compensate for the inevitable air of familiarity that accompanies Marco Perego’s debut feature. Although the filmmaker provides his real-life spouse Zoe Saldaña with one of her best roles in a long while — it’s nice to see her get a respite from the numerous sci-fi and fantasy blockbuster franchises (Star Trek, Avatar, Guardians of the Galaxy) to which she’s attached, not to mention free of alien make-up — The Absence of Eden spins a by-now sadly familiar story of the human suffering engendered by the border crisis.
Saldaña plays Esmee, a Mexican private dancer who is forced to flee her country after she shoots and kills a client who attempts to assault her while she’s performing a lap dance. After discovering that he was a member of a cartel, she says a tearful goodbye to her abuela and enlists the services...

It’s been five years since the last installment of The Terror, but season 3 is finally on the way.
AMC has ordered The Terror: Devil in Silver, a six-part series based on the novel written by Victor Lavalle. The story follows Pepper, “a working-class moving man who, through a combination of bad luck and a bad temper, finds himself wrongfully committed to New Hyde Psychiatric Hospital – an institution filled with the people society would rather forget. There, he must contend with patients who work against him, doctors who harbor grim secrets and perhaps even the very devil himself. As Pepper navigates a hellscape where nothing is as it seems, he finds that the only path to freedom is to face down the entity that thrives on the suffering within New Hyde’s walls. But doing so might prove that the worst demons of all live inside him.“

While Emmy Rossum is a bit too young to be Tom Holland's mother in real life, she has been cast in that role in the Apple TV+ series The Crowded Room. Set to start streaming on June 9, the series stars Holland as Danny Sullivan, a real-life criminal whose story was chronicled in the book The Minds of Billy Milligan by Daniel Keyes. While that served as an inspiration for Akiva Goldsman to look at Sullivan's story for The Crowded Room, the series differs in many ways and is not an adaptation of the novel.
Also featured in the series is Rossum as Danny's mother Candy. In real life, Rossum is 36, while Holland just turned 27 days ago. In a new interview with Entertainment Tonight, Rossum commented on the how she's only a decade older than Holland in real life. She explained how that had no bearing on her casting,...

Tom Holland put his all into The Crowded Room
The Spider-Man actor recently opened up about balancing — or not balancing — his duties as an executive producer and star in the first installment of the AppleTV+ anthology series.
“This show absolutely broke me in every way possible,” Holland tells The Hollywood Reporter at The Crowded Room premiere in New York City Thursday. “I just kept my head down. I dug my heels in, and I just tried my best.”
His fellow EP, Alexandra Milchan, says Holland earned his title as producer. He was involved in the scenes, dialogues, sets and production issues, all while starring in the 10-episode series in which he’s in almost every scene.
“Tom is always prepared,” Milchan tells THR. “Tom cares, and Tom gives it all. … So, I really give it to him. He went and opened up his heart and soul. I feel like in...

Tom Holland’s first go around with Apple didn’t go so great, but two years after “Cherry,” the Spider-Man star is hoping to make a triumphant return to the streamer. “The Crowded Room,” a drama series starring Holland in his first lead television role, will premiere on Apple TV+ on June 9.

The show differs from its source material by following the fictional Danny Sullivan (played by Holland), who is arrested in 1979 for his involvement in a New York City shooting. As Rya Goodwin interviews Danny,...
