Austin Butler
City on Fire: Matt Ross to direct Austin Butler in adaptation of Don Winslow novel
Austin Butler
Austin Butler has been attached to star in an adaptation of Don Winslow’s City on Fire for the last two years, but the project is finally moving forward as it now has a director. Deadline reports that Matt Ross (Captain Fantastic) has been tapped to direct City on Fire for Sony’s 3000 Pictures.

The novel is the first installment of a trilogy that “focuses on two criminal empires — one Irish, the other Italian — that control all of New England, until a modern-day Helen of Troy tears them apart and starts a brutal war. The main character, Danny Ryan, is forced to grow from a street soldier into a ruthlessly efficient leader to protect his friends, his family and the home he loves. Fighting the Mafia, the local cops, the feds – everyone – Danny builds a dynasty or will die trying.” Should the film be successful, I’d imagine that the other two novels,...

4 most egregious streaming TV show cancellations of 2025 so far
Image
Unfortunately, it's the season for television show cancellations, and we're going to start hearing about a lot of them. The broadcast networks will be pruning their lineups to make way for the new fall schedules, a process that has already begun. But over in the streaming world, that process happens year round, not just in May. So far, there have been a number of cancellations in 2025.

It's not all bad news, though. Plenty of streaming shows have already been renewed for new seasons this year, like Severance, Running Point, The Studio, School Spirits, Paradise, and more. Many streaming favorites are still awaiting word on their fates, but for some unlucky shows, their fates have already been decided... and it's not good news.

While there are many more cancellations worth getting heated over, like Prime Video's Clean Slate and Apple TV+'s Mythic Quest, these four cancellations were some of the...

In Five Days, ‘The Accountant 2’ Has Grossed Twice As Much as Ben Affleck’s Biggest Directorial Bomb
Image
Part of the reason why The Accountant 2 exists is that the first film, The Accountant, has developed a major cult following in the nine years since its release. Not only was it enough to spawn a sequel, unlike the recent Another Simple Favor — a follow-up to A Simple Favor — The Accountant 2 received a theatrical release. The movie debuted at the third spot domestically in its first weekend, and has already passed the $40 million mark at the global box office. While it’s still a ways away from recovering its reported budget and potentially turning a profit, The Accountant 2 has already generated twice as much as star Ben Affleck’s big-budget directorial dud Live by Night.

The gangster drama grossed around $22 million worldwide, against a reported budget of $90 million. The Accountant 2 cost around the same amount, but has already grossed $42 million worldwide in less than a week.

'Based on a True Story' Canceled at Peacock After 2 Seasons
Image
We have some sad news today for fans of Peacock's Based on a True Story, as the streaming platform has given the ax to the dark comedy thriller after just two seasons. Starring The Big Bang Theory's Kaley Cuoco, the series featured her and Chris Messina as married couple Ava and Nathan Bartlett, who, after suffering a series of unfortunate life events, team up with a serial killer (Tom Bateman) to start a true-crime podcast.

Deadline reports that Based on a True Story won't be returning for a third season. The eight-episode first season premiered in 2023, and was followed a year and a half later with another eight episodes in November 2024. At the time of its premiere, creator Craig Rosenberg told various outlets – including Peacock – that his goal was to create a show which examined America's obsession with turning serial killers into celebrities.

Kaley Cuoco's Dark Comedy Series With 79% Rt Score's Future Revealed 5 Months After Season 2

All good stories must come to an end. Peacock has trimmed its original programming, canceling Based on a True Story after two seasons.

Per Deadline, despite earning largely positive reviews from critics, Based on a True Story will not return for a third season on Peacock. Created by Craig Rosenberg, the dark comedy thriller series is a satire of the true crime genre with elements loosely inspired by true events. Both seasons follow married couple Ava and Nathan Bartlett, played by Cuoco and Chris Messina respectively, as they capitalize on America's growing obsession with true crime by launching a podcast with serial killer Matt Pierce (Tom Bateman). The second, and now final, season of eight episodes was released in its entirety on Peacock back in November 2024.

Based on a True Story season 3 deserved to happen (and I'm not happy Peacock is robbing us of it!)
Image
Peacock apparently was tired of sitting on the sidelines watching broadcast handing out surprising cancellations and decided to get in on the action with a pair of cancellations for two of its own shows.

Peacock has decided not to move forward with a third season of its hit comedy Based on a True Story, canceling the show roughly five months after season 2’s release in November 2024. A move that is both shocking and so disappointing.

Based on a True Story starred Kaley Cuoco and Chris Messina as a married couple struggling to keep their head above water who decide to use their love of true crime podcasts to launch their own podcast detailing the murders of local serial killer, the Westside Ripper… who just so happens to be the couple’s plumber Matt (Tom Bateman). Debuting in 2023, the show opened to rave reviews and quickly secured a second season, which...

Peacock just made a surprising cancellation and we're not thrilled about it
Image
Just when we thought our watchlist was safe, Peacock has gone and done the unthinkable. In a move that’s left many stunned and more than a little frustrated, the streamer has pulled the plug on one of its most beloved series without so much as a warning. Fans were eagerly awaiting news of a renewal, but what they got instead was a sudden cancellation that no one saw coming. It's just not fair, and the disappointment is undeniable.

On April 15, the streaming service announced that it would not be going forward with a third installment of the dark comedy series Based on a True Story. In other words, fans who were eagerly anticipating the next chapter will now be left with unanswered questions and an unfinished story. This cancellation comes almost five months after the second season dropped. Variety was first to report the news.

The Fate of Peacock’s ‘Based on a True Story’ Has Been Decided
Image
Peacock has officially reached the bookend for its series, Based on a True Story, as Variety reports the streamer has slapped the title with a cancellation. The second season came out all the way back in November, so fans have been waiting months for the final verdict, but it’s not the one they were hoping for. The news is a bit shocking as both seasons of the Kaley Cuoco and Chris Messina-led dark comedy drama performed well with audiences and critics alike, earning positive Rotten Tomatoes ratings. Showing potential for growth, the second season even added 7 points to its score on the online platform, moving from a Season 1 76% critics’ approval rating to Season 2’s 83%. Still, for one reason or another, NBCUniversal’s streamer decided to close the book and move on from Based on a True Story.

“Based on a True” story starred Kaley Cuoco and Chris Messina as a financially struggling couple who decide to start a true crime podcast to investigate whether or not their plumber is in fact a serial killer. The cast also included Tom Bateman, Liana Liberato, and Priscilla Quintana. The show originally premiered in 2023.

Amy Seimetz Joins ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ Spin-off ‘The Testaments’ as Series Regular
Image
Times may be bleak, but at least we’ll be getting to spend more time in the horrific, not-too-far-off-from-our-own-world Gilead of “The Handmaid’s Tale.” Not only will the show be returning in April for its sixth and final season, but a spin-off series based on author Margaret Atwood’s 2019 sequel, “The Testaments,” is also in the works at Hulu. While Ann Dowd has already been revealed to be reprising her role of Aunt Lydia, joined by new cast members Chase Infiniti, Rowen Blanchard, and Lucy Halliday, IndieWire can exclusively announce that actress/writer/director Amy Seimetz will also be appearing in the show as a series regular.

A source close to the project shared that Seimetz will be playing Paula, step-mother to Agnes, the daughter of June Osborne (Elizabeth Moss) and Luke Bankole (O-t Fagbenle), formerly known as Hannah. In the novel version of “The Testaments,” which is set 15 years after “The Handmaid’s Tale,...

15 Famous Actors Whose Careers Started On Law & Order
Image
There was a time not so long ago when a guest spot on "Law & Order" was a rite of passage for any up-and-coming actor. You could hardly find an actor in the greater New York metropolitan area who didn't have a credit on the popular procedural to their name. Honestly, it makes sense why it would serve as such a great launching pad: Each episode required an entirely new cast of supporting players, often of all ages and backgrounds, creating lots of opportunities for aspiring actors to get some screen time.

While "Law & Order" often had costar roles available, who were basically the leads for that given week, often getting the meatiest material, there were also plenty of "under-five" parts for newbies to cut their teeth on. Like the guy who gets questioned while unloading boxes down at the pier, that kind of thing. So obviously, over the...

Mindy Kaling's funniest show is leaving Netflix but her new show deserves your attention
Image
If you're a fan of Mindy Kaling and are a Netflix subscriber, there's a bit of good and bad news for you going into the end of February 2025. No, her modern classic teen comedy Never Have I Ever isn't going anywhere (thankfully), but the star's eponymous sitcom The Mindy Project will be departing Netflix by the end of the month. Grab a bear claw and lie on the floor in distress!

As a comedy series that originally aired on Fox, then moved to Hulu as an original when the streamer saved it from cancellation, and was produced by NBCUniversal, it was surprising when the underrated workplace rom-com landed on Netflix back in January 2023. It was a pleasant surprise nonetheless as lots of new viewers had the chance to discover the series.

What Happened To The Cast Of The Mindy Project?
Image
When "The Office" star Mindy Kaling created her own show, "The Mindy Project," she set out to redefine the kinds of roles women were allowed to play in sitcoms. "I really fell in love with the format where the main character was very flawed," she told Variety years later. "It was something you had seen countless times on sitcoms with men, but you hadn't seen with women. And I was so excited to play that part in a bigger capacity than I had."

To accomplish that goal, she invented Dr. Mindy Lahiri — a woman who desperately wants to be in love, at the expense of just about every other facet of her life. Still, she's a great doctor, a good coworker, and eventually, a great mom. Mindy's adventures won the show legions of fans -- even as it moved from network television to Hulu -- and viewers fell in love with the show's quirky,...

Clint Eastwood's 'Juror #2' Is a Very Old Fashioned Movie
Image
A decade or so ago, a new movie by a major director like Clint Eastwood would have been cause for excitement. But in Hollywood's current franchise-heavy, post-pandemic era, Juror #2, Eastwood's most recent and possibly final film, barely made a splash. The film's distributor, Warner Bros. Discovery, released it on fewer than 50 screens across America before dropping it on Max in early December, giving it such a limited theatrical release that Wbd considered not releasing the box office figures at all.

All this would suggest that Wbd lost faith in the film, or that it turned out to be an embarrassment that they wanted to bury on streaming. On the contrary, Juror #2 has been widely praised by critics and audiences, earning a 92% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes and gaining some word-of-mouth momentum on Max. As of this writing, it's the number one movie on the platform, and has been for some time.

Vindication for Clint Eastwood: ‘Juror #2’ Is the Surprise Dark Horse in Oscars 2025 as a Middle Finger to WB
Image
The voting period for Oscar nominees this year has ended and there might be a surprise for Clint Eastwood fans. While his latest and potentially last film, Juror No. 2, did not make it to anyone’s top 5 prediction list, Academy voters show more interest in the film. The film explores the moral dilemma of a juror when he finds out that he could’ve accidentally killed the victim in the case.

The film might surprise everyone with a surprise Best Picture nomination, as voters would want to honor the legendary filmmaker. If it happens, it would be a major shame for Warner Bros. who tried to tank the film with a limited release. It wouldn’t be a stretch to say that Juror No.2 might push out The Brutalist, reportedly a long film for the voters to sit through,...

How Clint Eastwood’s Relationship with Warner Bros. Unraveled
Image
Quick Links Clint Eastwood Was Owed a Wide Theatrical Release for 'Juror #2' 'Juror #2' Was Punished for the Box-Office Failure of 'Cry Macho' Eastwood Is Hollywood's Last Studio Star

Clint Eastwood made his feature directorial debut with the 1971 thriller Play Misty for Me, which was distributed by Universal Pictures, where his production company, Malpaso Productions, was based until 1975, when Eastwood, who was unhappy with how Universal handled his 1975 thriller film The Eiger Sanction, moved to Warner Bros., where he has remained ever since.

Over the span of approximately 45 films and 50 years, Eastwood’s incomparable relationship with Warner Bros. has resulted in more than $3.5 billion in non-inflation-adjusted box-office revenue, along with billions more through ancillary revenue streams and two Best Picture Academy Awards. Given Eastwood’s unrivaled prestige and tenure as the most successful director, producer, and star in the history of Warner Bros., it was widely expected...

Juror #2 Ending Explained: What Happens To Justin Kemp
Image
In 2024, Clint Eastwood delivered what turned out to be somewhat of a sleeper hit with a film that could — and arguably should — have been a much bigger deal. Courtroom drama "Juror #2" is vintage Eastwood, proving the legendary star and director still has it at the age of 94. The icon's 42nd (and likely final) movie is an intense thriller that keeps viewers engaged with its story of a man serving jury duty on a case in which he might very well be the real culprit. But it's also an examination of the U.S. justice system and the very concept of justice itself.

Eastwood turned down directing one of 2024's most controversial movies to helm "Juror #2," which investigates where truth, morality, and justice overlap. More specifically, it asks whether these are indeed separate constructs, or whether — especially in the case of truth and justice — they are expressions of the same fundamental ideas.

Most Underrated Movies of 2024
Image
With 2024 over, the year was chock-full of financially successful blockbusters and critically acclaimed dramas that are destined to take over the award season. Those movies defined what 2024 was and will be remembered long after. However, when most people were paying attention to the sure-fire hits, several films didn't get the appreciation they deserved.

There are a few loyal people who spread the word about these specific movies, but it wasn't enough to get them out of the status of being overlooked. Despite being generally well-received, these 2024 films couldn't reach a wide enough audience and didn't make the grandest splash at the box office or on streaming. From Netflix originals like Rebel Ridge and His Three Daughters to well-cast dramas like The Bikeriders and Saturday Night, there were plenty of 2024 movies that people largely missed out on.

Eastwood made his acting debut back in 1955, but broke through with a lead role in the Western series Rawhide and rose to fame in Sergio Leone's Dollars trilogy of spaghetti Westerns during the 1960s. 10 TV Shows That Would Have Worked Better As Movies
Image
In the era of streaming, the lines have continued to blur between movies and TV shows, meaning that some shows feel like they would be much better as movies. There used to be a clear delineation between the two media, but TV trends have dictated that shows should have higher production values, fewer serialized stories and more varied directorial choices. All of these elements are inherently cinematic.

When a new trailer drops on social media, it's sometimes unclear whether the project being sold is a movie or a TV show. This highlights how the two art forms have continued to merge and overlap. Miniseries are even more cinematic than most other TV shows, and many big hits would be even better if they had made a few more cuts to the story and been envisioned as movies instead.

Juror #2 Ending, Explained: Does Anyone Discover Justin's Guilt?
Image
Warning: Spoilers for Juror #2.

Directed by Clint Eastwood, Juror #2 is a legal thriller that follows Justin Kemp (Nicholas Hoult), a seemingly innocuous guy with a pregnant wife who’s called for jury duty one day. Selected as the second juror in a local murder case, Justin isn’t excited about fulfilling his civic duty. To make matters worse, once the trial begins, he realizes he might have a direct connection to the events surrounding the homicide. Seemingly a heartbreaking case of domestic abuse, James Syth (Gabriel Basso) is accused of beating his girlfriend, Kendall Carter (Francesca Eastwood), and throwing her body over a bridge. However, he claims he never committed such a crime. Unfortunately, with his criminal history and weak defense, the jury doesn’t believe him, except for Justin.

It turns out Justin was at the same bar James and Kendall were at on the night she died. After...

Clint Eastwood's 'Juror #2' Lands Top Spot on Max Streaming Service
Image
With a directorial career spanning over 50 years, and an acting career that goes back another 20, Clint Eastwood is a certified Hollywood legend. From his appearances as the Man With No Name in the Dollars trilogy, to his later post-modernist Westerns like Unforgiven, and his directorial efforts, American Sniper, Invictus, and Million Dollar Baby to name a few, Eastwood's filmography is nothing short of legendary. Despite this, his final film as a director, Juror #2, was buried at theaters, being pulled early from its (very) limited theatrical release. Thankfully, the movie has a new home on streaming, and it's finally getting the recognition it deserves.

Juror #2 is reportedly Eastwood's final movie as a director. Based on an original script by Jonathan A. Abrams, the film features a star-studded cast, including Nicholas Hoult, Toni Collette, J.K. Simmons, Kiefer Sutherland, Cedric Yarbrough, Zoey Deutch, and many more. Hoult stars as Justin Kemp, who...

Clint Eastwood’s 'Juror #2' Is Streaming and Deserves Way More Attention
Image
Clint Eastwood is one of the most well-known actor/directors still working today. Over his 60+-year career, Eastwood has been both behind and in front of the camera in dozens of films. What's even more impressive is that he continues to put out films even well into his 90s. Eastwood's latest flick, Juror #2, was released in October 2024 to positive critical reviews but less-than-ideal box office returns. To be fair, the movie had an extremely limited (as in less than 50 theaters) release.

This strategy seems unusual for a filmmaker of Eastwood's caliber, especially when you consider that Juror #2 may be the Western star's final directorial outing. Nothing's been confirmed yet, but Eastwood is 94 years old. Time's not exactly on his side. Couple that with lengthy Hollywood production timelines, and it's entirely possible that Eastwood is hanging up his cowboy hat after this.

After its disappointing theatrical run, Juror #2 is available to stream on Max.

Juror #2 (2024) Movie Ending Explained: Will Killebrew Sacrifice Justice for Ambition, or Reopen the Sythe Case?
Nicholas Hoult in Juror #2 (2024)
The 44th film, “Juror #2” (2024) from director Clint Eastwood is a morality tale covered in the garb of a legal drama, exhibiting many of Eastwood’s classicism without any of the staid tendencies that could be expected from a nonagenarian director. This is a much-needed callback to adult mid-budget dramas that Eastwood’s entire filmography boasts of.

Juror # 2 (2024) Plot Summary & Movie Synopsis: What is Justin Kemp’s involvement in the Sythe case?

Justin Kemp (Nicolas Hoult), a journalist residing in Savannah, Georgia, is called to attend jury duty on the case involving the death of Kendall Carter, who had allegedly been murdered a year prior by her boyfriend, James Sythe (Gabriel Basso), after a very evident bar fight between the couple leading to her walking home in the pouring rainy night and finally being found dead under a bridge the following morning.
