The Relic (1997) – What Happened to This Adaptation?
Image
The 90s was a great time for adaptations. Jurassic Park is the gold standard, of course, but there was so much more. That book’s author, Michael Crichton, also had Sphere and Congo get greenlit and released while we would see non-horror output like Forrest Gump and Shawshank Redemption, which account for the greatest film of all time… and Forrest Gump. On the horror side we would have Silence of the Lambs, the wonderful It TV miniseries, Exorcist III, and a fun little monster movie throwback called The Relic. At the time, I just thought it was a cool creature feature designed specifically for 12-year-olds like me but looking back all these years later I found out it was an adaptation of a book by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child in what would be the first of 22 separate stories for one of the chief protagonists. That’s all well and...

Burden of Truth Season 4 Episode 2 Review: Breaking Points
Kristin Kreuk in Burden of Truth (2018)
On Burden of Truth Season 4 Episode 2, Joanna's attempt to find Helen a new guardian did not go well. She felt overwhelmed, which caused errors in judgment and character, and it could jeopardize her case, if not her career.

Like the case during Burden of Truth Season 3 with Kobie and Clear Dawn, this case seemed personal to Joanna. Just how far will she go?

Soon, it became clear that Joanna didn't know as much about Helen as she thought she did. I truly felt her frustration that she couldn't see Helen since she wasn't technically family, but she was her attorney.

It was amusing when Joanna showed how determined she was and literally used Helen's spare key to enter her home and searched for any clues for her missing daughter, Samantha. Is this going to be the action that haunts Joanna later?

Upon searching, they found a  newspaper clipping of a missing teen,...

10 Directors to Watch: Ricky Staub Offers Ex-Cons Fresh Start With ‘Concrete Cowboy’
Image
“Concrete Cowboy” director Ricky Staub is not a faith-based filmmaker per se, but he’s not afraid to admit that faith played a part in steering him toward his debut feature, or in his decision to create Neighborhood Film Co., the production company that made it possible.

Staub wrote his first script when he was 10 years old, and learned the ropes by volunteering to work on any set that would take him. After moving to Los Angeles, he was hired as an assistant to Sam Mercer, following the producer to Philadelphia on M. Night Shyamalan’s “The Last Airbender.”

“In my mid-20s, I started asking pretty heavy questions like, ‘Why am I alive? … If there is a God, what does that mean to my life?’” recalls Staub, whose lightbulb moment came after meeting a homeless man who’d been formerly incarcerated. “Literally, like in a movie, I was lying...

Burden of Truth's Peter Mooney Talks Finale's Flash-Forward, Season 4 Renewal Odds and Rookie Blue Reunion
Image
Warning: The following contains major spoilers for Thursday’s Burden of Truth. Proceed at your own risk!

The biggest question facing Burden of Truth‘s Joanna and Billy following the Season 3 finale: Will the partners, in life and in work, be back for another season? Even if the import — which as of Thursday afternoon had yet to be officially renewed by Canadian broadcaster CBC — doesn’t return, the finale provided plenty of closure for the lawyers.

Burden of Truth Season 3 Episode 8 Review: Shelter From the Storm
Kristin Kreuk in Burden of Truth (2018)
It's finale time! Given that this is the end of the season, it is not surprising how everything seems to come to a head on Burden of Truth Season 3 Episode 8.

Joanna's been trying to help Kodie get her kids back since they got apprehended on Burden of Truth Season 3 Episode 1. It's been a long, hard road. But finally, finally, Kodie got to hug her kids in their own home.

Crawford Chang hasn't won a lot of cases this season, but previous seasons indicated that Joanna and Billy were going to come out ahead. And they did!

Something that I find endlessly fascinating is the lack of cliffhangers on Burden of Truth finales. When Burden of Truth Season 1 ended, I remember thinking how neatly they had wrapped up everything.

I wanted more, of course. It is a good series, and I always enjoy seeing Kristin Kreuk. I just couldn't see how...

Burden of Truth Season 3 Episode 7 Review: Name Your Ghosts

Who else is mad? I'm mad! They need Mercer of all people! Mercer! Burden of Truth Season 3 Episode 7 ended with the smug look on that b##tard's smiley face. Why do they have to need him?

Owen came so close to getting him. He didn't end up using the planted drugs. He caught Mercer out fair and square for all his dirty dealings.

Even when it meant Mercer might release dirty photos of Diane, Owen had her permission to do what he had to do because Mercer was a creepy slime that needed to go down.

Owen: Sam Mercer. You're under arrest.

Mercer: You might wanna ask your old lady about that.

Owen: Oh, I did. Turns out she's not afraid. Certainly not afraid of you. No, I'm here because she told me to be.

Mercer: Look, Owen --

Owen: You know, I was wondering, does your wife know that you took those?...

Finding Dory Beats Tarzan, Bfg, Purge in Weekend #3
Alexander Skarsgård and Margot Robbie in The Legend of Tarzan (2016)
The 4th of July holiday weekend is typically a big one at the box office, with fans flocking to their local theaters to beat the heat. This year, three new movies opened, The Bfg, The Legend of Tarzan and The Purge: Election Year, going up against the winner for the past two weekends, Finding Dory. Unfortunately, none of these newcomers could defeat the champ, with Finding Dory winning for a third week in a row with $41.9 million.

Box Office Mojo reports that Finding Dory dropped just 42.6% this weekend. The Legend of Tarzan opened in 3,561 theaters, followed by The Bfg in 3,357 theaters and The Purge: Election Year in 2,796 theaters. The Bfg is the only new release to have a positive Rotten Tomatoes rating, with a solid 71% Fresh, with The Legend of Tarzan scoring just 35% and The Purge: Election Year getting 54%. The Legend of Tarzan debuted in second place with $38.1 million, followed...

Can Finding Dory Fend Off Tarzan and Bfg at the Box Office?
Mark Rylance and Ruby Barnhill in The BFG (2016)
Pixar's Finding Dory helped resuscitate a sagging summer box office earlier this month, with a record-breaking $135 million, the highest debut ever for an animated movie. The sequel easily took down Independence Day: Resurgence, The Shallows and Free State of Jones in its second weekend, but it faces some much stiffer competition heading into the extended holiday. Disney's The Bfg, Warner Bros.' The Legend of Tarzan and Universal's The Purge: Election Year all debut this Friday. While it will likely be fairly close, Finding Dory is expected to hold onto its crown for a third weekend in a row, with $38.7 million.

If this prediction holds true, it will represent a 53.5% drop for Finding Dory in its third weekend, and push it past $300 million domestic. While $38.7 million isn't a terribly high figure for a winning summer weekend, none of the three new releases have been tracking very high with box office pundits.

The Bfg Almost Happened With Robin Williams, Get The Details
The first trailers for Steven Spielberg.s take on The Bfg have wonderfully teased and set-up the impending family epic. But while Mark Rylance looks sublime as the titular giant, it.s now been revealed that when producers Kathleen Kennedy and Frank Marshall originally looked into bringing Roald Dahl.s 1982 children.s novel to the big screen in the early 1990s they wanted Robin Williams to take the part. Which is something that we can all admit should definitely have happened. Kathleen Kennedy, who is now the president of Lucasfilm and has passed her producing work on The Bfg to Sam Mercer and Steven Spielberg, as well as her husband Frank Marshall, made this admission to Entertainment Weekly. Not only did she admit that The Bfg has had many different scripts during its 20 plus year development, but she confessed that Robin Williams was only unable to take the giant role...

First Poster For Steven Spielberg’s The Bfg Arrives
The first poster for Disney’s The Bfg is here.

The talents of three of the world’s greatest storytellers – Roald Dahl, Walt Disney and Steven Spielberg – finally unite to bring Dahl’s beloved classic “The Bfg” to life.

Directed by Spielberg, Disney’s The Bfg tells the imaginative story of a young girl and the Giant who introduces her to the wonders and perils of Giant Country.

The Bfg (Mark Rylance), while a giant himself, is a Big Friendly Giant and nothing like the other inhabitants of Giant Country. Standing 24-feet tall with enormous ears and a keen sense of smell, he is endearingly dim-witted and keeps to himself for the most part. Giants like Bloodbottler (Bill Hader) and Fleshlumpeater (Jemaine Clement) on the other hand, are twice as big and at least twice as scary and have been known to eat humans, while the Bfg prefers Snozzcumber and Frobscottle.
