The 7 Best New Movies Streaming on Netflix Right Now
Image
Netflix‘s April film acquisitions include masterpieces from some of the most revered Hollywood directors of the past 50 years, including Christopher Nolan, Martin Scorsese and Michael Mann. Whether you are in the mood for Nolan’s best superhero film or Mann’s greatest crime thriller, Netflix has whatever its subscribers may be looking for in April. That is to say nothing, either, of the pair of timeless sports dramas that the streaming service also added to its platform this month.

Here are TheWrap’s picks for the seven best movies that have started streaming on Netflix in April.

“The Dark Knight” (Warner Bros. Pictures) “The Dark Knight” (2008)

Christopher Nolan’s “The Dark Knight” is still considered by many to be the peak of the superhero genre, and for good reason. Nolan’s 2008 sequel to 2005’s “Batman Begins” is a propulsive, gripping crime thriller that doubles as a battle of wills...

Ryan Gosling's 30% Rotten Tomatoes Directorial Debut Finds New Streaming Home
Image
Ryan Gosling is Barbie’s Ken, Blade Runner 2049’s Officer K, La La Land’s Sebastian, and the list goes on with credits that shine a light on his acting prowess. Nonetheless, did you know that he also tried his hand at directing? In 2015, Gosling made his directing debut with Lost River, which found a new home.

Lost River, described as a “dark fairytale” follows a family, consisting of a mother, Billy, who finds it hard to retain her ancestral home as she defaults on a loan. To save his family from bankruptcy, her son, Bones, tries to unearth the town's origins. The feature written by Gosling was a commercial failure, grossing only $615,500 on its $2 million budget.

The surreal and unconventional storytelling of the movie missed the mark with both audiences and critics garnering a Rotten Tomatoes score of 30 percent. The movie has a stellar cast consisting of some power-packed performers,...

When Will Smith & Eva Mendes Had A Hilarious Kiss On Sets of Hitch & Altoids Saved The Day
Image
Was Will Smith and Eva Mendes’ on-screen Kiss in Hitch almost a disaster?(Photo Credit – YouTube)

During an interview on The Oprah Winfrey Show, Mendes spilled the hilarious backstory of their kissing scene. Nervous before filming, she calmed herself with a tuna fish sandwich, extra onions, and a side of Doritos—bad move. Smith, known for his charm and professionalism, was reportedly not fond of the scent. Mendes admitted, “I never asked you how it was?” to which Smith, ever the gentleman, replied, “It was wonderful.”

The moment became one of the film’s funniest behind-the-scenes stories. Mendes, realizing her mistake, popped some Altoids before the scene resumed. The minty fix worked, and their kiss went down in rom-com history. But for a moment, Hitch almost had an unintentional blooper reel addition.

Released in 2005, Hitch starred Smith as Alex ‘Hitch’ Hitchens, a dating consultant who had all the answers, except...

Carey Mulligan Kiss Scene Struggles (Photo Credit – Instagram/Wikimedia)

Kissing a Hollywood icon sounds exciting. But for Carey Mulligan, it was a nightmare. The actress, who played a small role in the 2009 crime thriller, had a full-blown case of nerves. So much so that her scene with Depp got cut because she looked too uncomfortable.

And it wasn’t just a one-time thing—she had to redo the kiss sixteen times. Sixteen! At that point, it’s less of a romantic scene and more of a personal crisis. The problem? She had admired Depp for years. And unexpectedly, she was in an intimate scene with him. Mulligan stated on The Graham Norton Show (via Metro).

“I had to kiss him several times. It was 16 times, but it was cut out of the film because I looked so uncomfortable.” Sixteen takes of trying to act natural. Sixteen takes of attempting to calm her nerves.

Image
The Other Guys, starring Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg, was a clever satire of buddy cop movies – while also scratching the itch for action and camaraderie that define the genre – but it never became a box office hit. Per Hulu, The Other Guysis one of several new films now available on the streaming platform. Will Smith Now Working on 'Hitch' Sequel... Without Original Director
Image
Andy Tennant, the director of the Will Smith-led romantic comedy Hitch, says that the star is now working on a seque...without his involvement. The 2005 rom-com was one of the year's highest-grossing films, making more than $371 million at the global box office from a $70 million production budget. The reception by critics was also pretty solid, and today it sits at 68% on Rotten Tomatoes. Thus, the film, which turns 20 this year, stands as one of Will Smith's most successful films from that decade.

Tennant recently spoke to Business Insider about Hitch and revealed that Smith is developing a sequel for the film. At one point, Sony Pictures planned to make a TV show based on the same concept, but the project fizzled out. “In the US, it’s still a racial issue”: Will Smith Can Fix the Mistake With Cameron Diaz in Hitch Sequel Now That Eva Mendes Doesn’t Act Anymore
Image
Will Smith’s 2005 blockbuster movie Hitch‘s sequel is reportedly in development. If the stars align, this could be his chance to correct a mistake from the original movie.

Will Smith in Hitch | Credits: Sony Pictures Releasing

Although Smith is admittedly more of an action and sci-fi hero, his rom-com avatar came as a fresh surprise to fans. Eva Mendes’ hard-edged cynic against him presented the perfect contrast. So it was no surprise that the movie became such a big hit across the world.

However, things might have been completely different if the makers had gone for the original plan with Cameron Diaz. Regardless, now that Will Smith himself is the one making the sequel, he has the perfect opportunity to rectify that mistake.

Will Smith claimed Cameron Diaz was supposed to be cast against him in Hitch

Hitch admittedly remains to this day one of the most beloved movies of Will Smith’s career.

'Hitch' Director Reveals the Madness of Working With Will Smith on the Hit Romantic Comedy
Image
Will Smith's romantic comedy Hitch scored with theatergoers back in 2005, but "it was madness" trying to make the movie, according to the film’s director, Andy Tennant. The filmmaker clashed with the A-list actor who hired him to helm the classic rom-com, because of conflicting story ideas, and Smith even threatened to drop out of the project three days before filming began. Nevertheless, Tennant claims not to “have anything against” Smith in a new interview published at the time of Hitch’s 20th anniversary. Tennant said (via Business Insider):

"He [Smith] hired me to make this movie. It was not an easy job for anybody, but we went around the world with the movie. Even [during] the hard times he’d always say, 'Wait until the junket. We’re gonna go around the world with this.' And we did, and it was great. It was the most amazing trip I had ever been on.

“A Really Hard & Uncomfortable Look at History”: Sara Bareilles on Fiance Joe Tippett’s Performance in ‘American Primeval’

The arts have a way of bringing people together. Just think about how many celebrities meet on the set of a production and announce their relationship shortly thereafter. We’ve got Spider-Man to thank for our current favorite couple, Zendaya and Tom Holland; Game of Thrones for Kit Harington and Rose Leslie; The Place Beyond the Pines for Eva Mendes and Ryan Gosling — the list goes on and on. In 2015, love took center stage between two-time Grammy Award-winning singer, songwriter, and actress, Sara Bareilles, and actor, Joe Tippett. The latter was auditioning for a role in the former’s upcoming theatrical production, Waitress: The Musical, and soon, sparks flew, and love blossomed, with the pair being inseparable ever since.

Will Smith's $353 Million Isaac Asimov Sci-Fi Adaptation Is Coming to Peacock
Image
I, Robot, the 2004 Will Smith-led film that takes its name from Isaac Asimov’s 1950 collection of short stories, is headed to Peacock. Starting Feb. 1, viewers will be able to stream I, Robot, which was nominated for a 2005 Oscar for Best Achievement in Visual Effects.

The film, which also starred Bridget Moynahan, James Cromwell, Bruce Greenwood, and Resident Alien’s Alan Tudyk made $353 million at the worldwide box office against a budget of $120 million. The film currently has a 57% Tomatometer score on Rotten Tomatoes and a 70% Popcornmeter Score based on more than a quarter of a million ratings.

When the film was first released, some fans had issues with it since it shares the title with the first of Asimov’s Robot book series and includes Asimov’s three laws of robotics. However, the movie does not share many similarities with any of the author’s works beyond that.

Eva Mendes and Ryan Gosling’s relationship has undoubtedly been one of the very few long-standing marriages in Hollywood. While it certainly required Gosling to ask out and propose to Mendes, it was Cianfrance’s decision that turned the co-stars into real-life lovers.

The Shocking Reason Why Ryan Gosling Broke Up With Sandra Bullock, “I Had 2 Of The Greatest Girlfriends”
Image
Here’s why Ryan Gosling broke up with Sandra Bullock (Photo Credit – Facebook/Wikimedia)

The story goes back to 2001, on the set of Murder by Numbers. Sandra Bullock, the experienced A-lister, and Ryan Gosling, a fresh-faced newbie, were meant to play a cop and suspect, but what really happened was chemistry off-screen that blossomed into a romantic relationship.

Despite the 16-year age gap—Sandra was 37; Ryan was just 21—they didn’t let age stop them. Their connection seemed strong. But as it turned out, show business had other plans. Ryan himself put it bluntly: “Show business is the bad guy. When both people are in show business, it’s too much show business. It takes all of the light, so nothing else can grow.” Translation? Their busy schedules simply tore them apart.

Even with their split in 2003, Ryan has no regrets. He once said in an interview that his time...

Nope. Eva Mendes was spotted in a friend’s portfolio photo. Talk about a random break! Mendes, then a college student, was on her way to a marketing degree when a talent manager saw her picture and decided she had the look. The rest? As they say, it is history.

Mendes didn’t waste time following a traditional path. Her first role? Children of the Corn V: Fields of Terror—yes, a direct-to-video horror flick. And let’s just say, she wasn’t exactly handing out Oscars for her performance. In fact, she wasn’t too happy with how it turned out, so what did she do? She hired herself an acting coach and got serious about the craft. She wasn’t about to let one bad gig ruin her hustle.

Then came the quirky roles. In A Night at the Roxbury...
