Image
Throughout the years, the Avengers have faced countless threats, from alien warlords to cosmic tyrants. But in this, only a few enemies were as brilliant and unpredictable as Doctor Doom. He was a scientific genius who spent his life pursuing absolute power and clashed with heroes like the Fantastic Four and the Avengers time and again.

This Avengers: Doomsday theory about Doctor Doom just doesn’t add up

Fans were taken for a spin when they heard that Robert Downey Jr. was coming to the MCU. But surprisingly not in his Iron Man role, but as the villainous Doctor Doom. While this confused the longtime Tony Stark fans,...

Lorcan Finnegan
The Surfer | Nic Cage’s new film gave me a panic attack
Lorcan Finnegan
In UK cinemas today, director Lorcan Finnegan’s surfer-less surf movie The Surfer is the perfect metaphor for 2025 – and not in a nice way.

In the summer of 2022, UK temperatures reached an unfortunate high of 40.3°C. That July, I remember wandering the streets of south London in a daze, every patch of grass a golden-brown graveyard, watching a man vomit water into a bin as a wildfire ripped through the capital a dozen miles to the north. Faced suddenly with a vision of a climate apocalypse, the film that kept coming to mind was George Miller’s Mad Max. Ever since, I’ve found the comparatively weak sun of the English summer more than a little unnerving.

But while plenty of films in the Australian New Wave understand the mental terror of the country’s omnipresent sunshine, The Surfer, in UK cinemas this weekend, seems to get that fear better than most.

Nicolas Cage Risked His Life Filming New Thriller 'The Surfer'
Image
Nicolas Cage's latest film, The Surfer, landed in theaters on May 2, and the film is already being hailed as one of the best the Academy Award winner has made in recent years. However, the movie, shot in Australia, may have brought back some memories for the actor, who recently revealed that he had been acquainted with the wrath of the sea in the past, and "almost died" while previously attempting to surf in real life.

The thriller by Vivarium's Lorcan Finnegan sees Cage play a man who returns to his hometown in Australia and attempts to surf at a nearby beach with his son. Things go haywire when the locals don't like his presence, and they show Cage's character that they will do whatever they can to keep him out. The film co-stars Julian McMahon, Nic Cassim, Alexander Bertrand, Finn Little, and Justin Rosniak, among others.

When talking to Entertainment Weekly,...

Nicolas Cage's New Psychological Thriller Has Critics & Audiences Divided On Rotten Tomatoes
Image
Nicolas Cage is a renowned actor with numerous awards to his name, but his latest movie is struggling to gain traction. Having started his Hollywood career in 1981 in the show The Best of Times, he quickly pivoted to the big screen. Cage found roles in Raising Arizona (1987), Moonstruck (1987), and Face/Off (1997), all while earning prominence fairly quickly. In the 2000s, he would star in National Treasure (2004), Ghost Rider (2007), and Kick-Ass (2010), among countless other films. He even gained renown as a voice actor, starring in The Croods (2013) and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018).

Cage will be starring in Spider-Noir, a detective spin-off from the Sony Spider-Man universe.

If Nicolas Cage's impressive career is not astounding enough, he has also won several awards from major organizations. He earned Best Actor at the Academy Awards for his performance as Ben Sanderson in 1995's Leaving Las Vegas, alongside a nomination for his work in Adaptation (2002). He...

Nicolas Cage 'Literally Got Stuck in the Rip Tide' Trying to Learn How to Surf for His New Film With 86% Rt Score
Image
Oscar-winner Nicolas Cage is opening up about just how difficult it was to film his new psychological thriller The Surfer, which is currently in movie theaters. He tells Entertainment Weekly that he “could’ve died” doing some of the scenes in the new film, in which he plays a businessman returning to his Australian hometown hoping to buy the beach house where he grew up. Although he isn’t seen surfing much in the film, he told the outlet that he wishes his character had been able to do more.

“(Director) Lorcan (Finnegan) and I talked at length about it. He knows that I wish I could have gotten to that point,” said the Face/Off star. He added he ultimately wanted to recreate a scene from the 1979 film Big Wednesday in which his character surfed. “I seem to remember in my mind’s eye, Jan-Michael Vincent on the board and...

Before Dominating The Horror Genre, Ryan Murphy Created A Grisly Medical Drama
Image
When most people these days think about TV writer and producer Ryan Murphy, they're most likely to think of one of his many horror-based projects. He's created or co-created a number of high-profile horror projects over the years, from the ambitious anthology series "American Horror Story" to dramatizations of true crime stories ranging from Jeffrey Dahmer to O.J. Simpson. Blood and guts just seem to be a part of his creative vision. For fans who have been following the campy creator for a long time, however, his habit for horror storytelling really isn't a surprise, because he created one of the gnarliest (and most exploitative) medical dramas of all time: "Nip/Tuck."

"Nip/Tuck" followed Miami-based plastic surgeons Dr. Christian Troy (Julian McMahon) and Dr. Sean McNamara (Dylan Walsh) as they dealt with a whole lot more than a few nips and tucks. There were torrid affairs, a couple of love triangles,...

The Surfer (2024) Review
Image
I seem to spend an awful lot of time on this website talking about Nic Cage, but then again Nic Cage makes an awful lot of films so I guess its inevitable.

As I and others have said before, some of his movies are good and some of them are bad. Some of them are so awful they instantly start to rot your mind, but they are always at least interesting so thats why I for one keep watching them.

The Surfer is his latest and much like Longlegs, my primary advice is for anyone interested in it is to ignore all of the marketing immediately. The cult of Cage, Cage Rage, Caged Madness or whatever else you want to call it is now seemingly the primary tool used to sell all of the films made by the man whose birth name is Nicolas Kim Coppola, and who once had...

The Surfer – Review
Image
Nicholas Cage in The Surfer. Courtesy of Roadside Attractions

Nicholas Cage continues his recent exploration of the weird end of the cinematic pool, with The Surfer, a paranoid tale of crazy, nightmare-like incidents that takes the form of a recreation of a 1970’s B-movie Australian film, an homage to Australian New Age and Ozploitation films. Oddly, the film was made by a pair of Irishmen, director Lorcan Finnegan and screenwriter Thomas Martin, although it was shot on location in Australia. The writer and director share a love of Australian New Wave, also known as Ozploitation, and includes horror, comedy and thrillers examples, a style that includes both Walkabout and Mad Max. The Surfer is an ambitious film, referencing a John Cheever story, “The Swimmer,” and drawing on a real-life incident of a bullying gang of surfers in Southern California, who terrorized a public beach they claimed as their own, and...

On-Air Film Review: Catch a Wave In The Cage with ‘The Surfer’
Image
Chicago – Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com appears on “The Morning Mess” with Josh Westcott for Wbgr-fm on May 1st, 2025, reviewing the new film “The Surfer,” the latest “In the Cage” sensation from the legendary Nicolas Cage. In select theaters on May 2nd.

Cage is the title character, who comes back from America to his Australian hometown beach community to buy back his family’s ocean view home, and re-establish his love of surfing with his son The Kid (Finn Little). Things get a bit hairy as Scally (Julian McMahon), the leader of the cult-like surf gang the Bay Boys, prevents The Surfer from even using the beach, claiming it is only for locals. Thus begins a harrowing journey for the Cage-as-Surfer protagonist, as he is trapped by the Bay Boys in an oceanside parking lot with only a craggy beach bum (Nic Cassum) as an ally.

”The Surfer” is in select theaters on May 2nd.

Nicolas Cage at an event for Drive Angry (2011)
The Surfer: We Interview the legendary Nicolas Cage about his surreal new flick
Nicolas Cage at an event for Drive Angry (2011)
In this business, legends don’t come much bigger than the great Nicolas Cage. Recently, I had the chance to see his latest movie, The Surfer, at a pretty raucous screening at SXSW. You can read my review Here, but I enjoyed this surreal tribute to seventies Ozzploitation flicks. In it, Cage plays a harried businessman trying to reconnect with his Australian roots, only to run afoul of a local surf gang, run by a magnetic, macho guru (Nip/Tuck’s Julian McMahon in an excellent performance), who launches a campaign against him that challenges his sanity.

Suffice to say, I was pumped when I received an invitation to speak to Cage recently. I’ve interviewed Cage a few times before, and always found him to be an upbeat, friendly guy – and this time was no exception. You can really see in our chat (embedded above) that Cage cares about the film,...

The Surfer Review: Nicolas Cage leads this psychedelic surf thriller
Image
Plot: A middle-aged businessman (Nicolas Cage) returns to the idyllic beach of his childhood to reconnect with his son and Australian roots. However, he discovers that the beach is now dominated by a local surf gang, who refuse to let non-locals hit the waves.

Review: Australian cinema has a long history of psychological dramas that probe the psyche of the Aussie male. North American audiences have always been somewhat taken with the stereotypical macho Australian. For proof, one need only note their outsized impact on the film industry, with many of the biggest stars being of Australian descent, like Mel Gibson, Hugh Jackman, Chris Hemsworth, Russell Crowe, and many others. Yet, as much as they seem to celebrate their rough and tumble nature, their movies have always been more introspective about such things, and director Lorcan Finnegan’s The Surfer fits into that mould.

Like the Aussie New Wave classic,...

The Surfer Review: Exploitation Thriller Knows Exactly What to Do with Nicolas Cage
Image
Note: This review was originally published as part of our 2024 Cannes coverage. The Surfer opens in theaters on May 2.

In The Surfer, an exploitation film set to pressure-cook, a mild-mannered man is pitted against a group who even Andrew Tate might find a touch extreme. It’s set in South Australia on fictional Luna Bay, the kind of place where if the heat doesn’t get you, something else probably will. The water shines turquoise-blue but the beaches look like scorched earth. Into this furnace arrives an unnamed man (Nicolas Cage) hoping for nothing more than to view a cliffside property and catch a wave, but the locals have other ideas: “Don’t live here, don’t surf here,” one says, offering about as much hospitality as a switchblade.

The director of this entertaining potboiler is Lorcan Finnegan, an Irish filmmaker who seems acutely aware of the hand he’s...

'Fantastic Four' Director Explains Why Doctor Doom Is Not the Movie's Villain
Image
While Doctor Doom is the superhero team's most famous adversary, director Matt Shakman explains why he did not want to include him in The Fantastic Four: First Steps. After years of waiting, Marvel's First Family is finally joining the MCU, and the team will be facing off against none other than Galactus and the Silver Surfer for their first outing. Doctor Doom will instead be the primary villain in the upcoming two Avengers films, Doomsday and Secret Wars. If Doom is the main villain of the culmination of the Multiverse Saga, why would they not introduce him in The Fantastic Four: First Steps?

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Shakman spoke about the film's decision not to feature Doctor Doom in the upcoming MCU film. Shakman says the biggest factor was that all three previous Fantastic Four films centered on Doctor Doom. Trying to fit Doom and the team's origin...

A 18 Year Old Sandra Bullock Movie Became a Streaming Hit Despite Having a Rt Score Worse Than ‘Madame Web’
Image
If you ever have the chance to ask Sandra Bullock the movie she most regrets starring in, her answer would probably be Speed 2. Well, that’s what she told toofab during the promotional tour for The Lost City back in 2022. And don’t even bother asking her about the sequel to the original Miss Congeniality movie, ironically titled ‘Armed and Fabulous’. That would be her second choice, right off the bat.

One could argue that Bullock’s filmography is proof that not every franchise extension has the potential to strike gold, even for Hollywood royalty. But there happens to be one standalone Sandra Bullock film that’s doubly bad (if not worse) than both those choices on her regret-o-meter. German director Mennan Yapo’s Hollywood debut with Premonition (2007) had Bullock leading the charge of a sinking ship right from the start of its 96-minute runtime.

4 Ryan Murphy shows to watch and 3 to definitely skip
Image
As you start to look through the list of Ryan Murphy shows, you’ll find that there are way more than you initially thought. He’s the man behind Glee, Scream Queens, American Horror Story, and so much more. There’s simply no way that you can watch everything in a short space of time, and there are some shows just not as good as others.

How do you know if something is worth watching or skipping, though? After all, something can seem great from the premise, but then you get into two episodes and realize that it’s just not what was promised. The good news is I’ve watched the majority of his shows now, and I can tell you the ones that just don’t quite hit the mark. I have the four that you definitely want to watch, and the three that are just worth skipping.

The Surfer

Like a wave, there’s no stopping the pure energy of Nicolas Cage. The Academy Award winner never phones in a performance, regardless of budget or subject matter, but not every filmmaker can harness his signature eccentricities. Lorcan Finnegan (Vivarium) joins the ranks of those who possess such an abiloity, delivering a sun-baked descent into delirium with The Surfer.

Cage stars as The Surfer, a white collar man who wants to ride the waves with his son on the Australian coast where he grew up. But his paradise is lost thanks to a cult-like gang of local surfers, led by the enigmatic Scally,...

FBI: Most Wanted and International get disappointing update after cancelation
Image
We have been hopeful. It was a pretty devastating blow to lose both FBI: Most Wanted and FBI: International at the same time. We suspected one of these shows were on the bubble, since CBS had yet to renew them, but we did not anticipate the network pulling the plug on both and then launching new FBI spinoffs in their place.

Still, there were flickers of hope. We had seen shows like Swat come back from the dead on CBS, and twice at that. We'd also seen shows like 9-1-1: Lone Star get the boot from one network, only to be picked up by another. Plus, FBI: Most Wanted and FBI: International were Wolf Entertainment titles that were connected to franchises on other networks. Maybe NBC can step in and keep one or both shows going?

Neither show is being shopped to networks "Execute" - When a hacker triggers a...

How Robert Downey Jr. Was Chosen To Play Doctor Doom
Image
The idea that Robert Downey Jr. should play one of Marvel’s ultimate bad guys predates his tenure as one of its ultimate good guys.

When Downey walked onstage dressed as Doctor Doom at San Diego Comic-Con last year it was a shocker to nearly everyone, in large part because he had already saved the Marvel Universe as Tony Stark. But it seems the concept of Downey as bad guy Victor Von Doom goes way back to before the actor was ever cast as Iron Man’s alter ego.

“I remember you had all met with [Downey] already for like Doctor Doom or something on another project,” director Jon Favreau said in a 2023 conversation with Marvel boss Kevin Feige. “I think he had come through on maybe [2005’s] Fantastic Four, so everybody sort of knew who he was.”

While that part has long been known, Joe Russo — who is directing the next...

This post contains spoilers from The Residence episode 2 from this point forward.

After Cordelia's discovery at the end of episode 1 that Australian Foreign Minister David Rylance (Brett Tucker) was wearing A.B.'s shirt and could have something to do with A.B.'s murder, The Residence episode 2 offers some context. White House chef Marvella (Mare Wiseman) got into an argument with A.B. over Rylance being in the kitchen and not being able to use flames for her wagyu dinner.
