New York to Face Killer Rat Infestation in Survival Horror From ‘Isn’t It Romantic’ Director and ‘Pitch Perfect’ Producer, Heading to Cannes With Lionsgate
Image
New York City is set to battle a plague of rats in an upcoming survival horror.

Lionsgate and producer Paul Brooks have partnered on worldwide rights to the new project — entitled, simply, “Rats!” — with Lionsgate set to launch sales in Cannes.

The deal follows the studio’s previous collaboration with Brooks on the 2022 horror film “Prey for the Devil.”

“Rats!” comes from director Todd Strauss-Schulson, whose credits include the Rebel Wilson rom-com “Isn’t It Romantic,” comedy slasher “The Final Girls” and buddy stoney sequel “A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas.” Strauss-Schulson was also behind the viral melancholic short film “Rat,” shot in the lockdown of 2020.

“Rats!” appears to something altogether different according to the synopsis, putting New York City in a “race against time to stop a killer rat infestation unlike anything the world has ever seen.”

Strauss-Schulson directs from a script he co-wrote with Paul Sado, who penned the Netflix animated feature “Leo,...

Bobby Cannavale Recalls Studios Wanting To Recast Peter Dinklage in Their Award-Winning 2003 Film
Image
Two decades after its theatrical release, Bobby Cannavale revisits the path that led to creating the critically acclaimed film The Station Agent. During a recent interview with Vanity Fair, Cannavale reveals that the creation of The Station Agent lingered for four years, primarily due to Peter Dinklage's casting.

Written and directed by Tom McCarthy (in his feature directorial debut), The Station Agent centers on Dinklage's Finbar McBride, a man with dwarfism who inherits an abandoned train station in a small New Jersey town. There, he meets Joe Oramas (Cannavale), a hot dog vendor, and Olivia Harris (Patricia Clarkson), an artist, and the three develop a close friendship. At the time, Dinklage wasn't an "A-list-type" actor, so studios were looking to recast him; according to Cannavale, studios also wanted to do away with one of the film's central points: Fin's dwarfism.

"I remember everything about that movie, because it took forever to get made,...

‘Conclave’ Prays for Oscar Attention: How Do Religious Movies Perform With Academy Voters?
Image
Will the Oscars answer “Conclave’s” prayers?

Edward Berger’s mystery thriller has been one of the buzziest films to emerge from the fall festivals. Adapted from Robert Harris’ 2016 novel, the film premiered at Telluride, where it received raves from attendees. Since then, its awards prospects have grown, especially following its Audience Award wins at the Mill Valley and Middleburg fests. Those regional accolades helped propel future best picture nominees such as “American Fiction” (2023) and “Belfast” (2021) and best picture winner “Green Book” (2018). “Conclave” has popular appeal, but will its religious themes be an advantage or a potential hurdle in the Oscar race?

Saturday Night Live Season 50's Tom McCarthy Tribute, Explained
Image
NBC's long-running late-night sketch comedy show "Saturday Night Live" returned over the weekend for its season 50 premiere, hosted by "Hacks" star Jean Smart. But as the show greeted a new season, it also said farewell with a memorial tribute to Tom McCarthy at the end of the episode.

The name and face might not be familiar to general audiences, but McCarthy was a familiar face at 30 Rockefeller Center, the home of "SNL" and its parent studio NBC. McCarthy, who died over the summer at the age of 62, was a former United States Secret Service agent who spent the last 11 years of his career working as NBCUniversal's Senior Vice President and Global Chief Security Officer.

It was the latter role that formed his most direct connection to "SNL." McCarthy acted as an intermediary when the Secret Service opened a file on comedian John Mulaney, a former writer for the...

Juliette Lewis and Peter Dinklage have lit up cinema screens for decades. They have each worked on projects helmed by absolute masters of the craft. Lewis cut her teeth with cinematic madmen like Oliver Stone, Martin Scorsese, and Robert Rodriguez, while Dinklage originally played in projects under gentler souls like Michael Showalter, Alexandre Rockwell, and Tom McCarthy. Now, finally acting against one another in Elliott Lesters new Western The Thicket, Lewis and Dinklage stir up toe-curling tension in a period of American history rarely seen on film.

‘S-Town’ TV Show in the Works From Apple, Host Says
Image
A Hollywood adaptation of S-Town is still in the works, with a fresh creative team.

Host Brian Reed tells The Hollywood Reporter that Apple TV+ is eying a limited series adaptation of the podcast, with Damages and Bloodline co-creator Daniel Zelman attached to develop the project.

Apple TV+ declined to comment. Zelman’s reps did not respond to requests for comment.

The hit 2017 nonfiction podcast centered on an oddball, genius antique clock restorer and his complex relationship with his rural Alabama community. When it was released over seven years ago, S-Town shattered podcast listenership records, gaining 16 million downloads in its first week and 40 million in its first month. The seven-part series from producers behind Serial and This American Life was praised for elevating the podcast form, with Slate deeming it “aural literature” and The New Yorker saying in 2018 that of all podcasts released up to that point, S-Town “seems most...

‘The Friend’ Review: Naomi Watts, Bill Murray and a Great Dane Charm in a Lively Grief Drama
Image
Although Naomi Watts wrangles a huge Great Dane, The Friend is far from your average doggie movie. There are no slapstick scenes of the dog running away with her, and no mawkishness even though the film is about grief. This is a fresh, unsentimental yet touching story about Iris (Watts), a writer and teacher, adjusting to life without her best friend, Walter (Bill Murray), a famous, womanizing author. His suicide was a shock. But another shoe drops when she learns that he has left her Apollo, a Great Dane who almost comes up to her waist.

The drama is based on Sigrid Nunez’s novel, which, while much loved and admired, seems unadaptable on the page: It is told in the first person and Iris frequently addresses Walter directly, dropping in comments about writing and books as well as recalling the details of their past relationship. But directors Scott McGehee...

‘The Friend’ Review: Naomi Watts, Bill Murray and a Big Dog Explore Love and Loss
Image
A balancing act that seems to enjoy feeling as if it’s about to lose its balance, “The Friend” is a lot of different things at once. It’s a dog-and-human bonding movie, which means it’s unavoidably sentimental. It’s a Bill Murray movie, which means it’s funny in a snarky way, but it’s also a character drama in which Murray is an unseen presence most of the time. It’s a movie about grief and a movie about creativity.

And mostly, the new film from writer-directors David Siegel and Scott McGehee is all of those things at once, sliding between tones, defaulting to lightness most of the time but always ready to veer in another direction.

The film, which premiered on Friday at the Telluride Film Festival, is full of feints: a little bit of comedy, a hefty helping of loss, a touch of melodrama and a whole lot of dog,...

Best Picture Oscar nomination for ‘Inside Out 2’?
Image
“Inside Out 2” roared into cinema in June, becoming Pixar’s highest-grossing film in a debut weekend of all time, while its current worldwide haul at this time of writing stands at just over one billion.

The first movie — one of the most ingenious films of this century — took audiences inside the head of young Riley as she navigated a move to a new city while her emotions tried to guide her through the move in her head. This second film brings back those emotions as Riley goes through her teenage years. But Joy and Sadness and the gang have to deal with several new emotions in headquarters, including Anxiety, Embarrassment, and Ennui.

But while the film marches towards $1 billion at the box office, could it also be marching towards awards glory? Well, animated flicks don’t get the justice they deserve when it comes to the Academy Awards. So often,...

Hayao Miyazaki's Favorite Pixar Film (& The Only One He Actually Liked)
Image
Hayao Miyazaki enjoyed Pixar's film Up for its heartbreaking opening sequence and attention to detail in animation. The Pixar film received critical acclaim, won numerous awards, and grossed approximately 735 million dollars at the box office. Miyazaki's nod to Pixar's Luxo Jr. mascot in Spirited Away shows his respect for the Western animation studio's success.

A well-known fact about Hayao Miyazaki is that he holds a general distaste for a great deal of modern animation. While many of his own films have implemented CGI, he's especially disinterested in any productions that use it entirely in place of traditional animation. Over the years, this, combined with Miyazaki only rarely watching new films in general, has led to him having few kind words to say about one of the most famous animation studios in the world: Pixar. However, there is a single Pixar film that Miyazaki has expressed a fondness for.

Celebration of cinema has always been extended by the Oscars honoring the prowess of cinematic excellence with one of the most recognized accolades. Throughout the rich history of cinema, there have been several movies based on true events, that left a mark among moviegoers or in the pages of history.

A still from Lawrence of Arabia

Also, movies that are based on true events are another way of documenting the particular incident, albeit a portion of fictionalization may alter the accuracy, but for cinema’s sake, filmmakers enjoy the basic freedom to have their own touch to the narrative. Throughout history, movies like The Great Ziegfeld by Robert Z. Leonard, or it would be criminal not to mention David Lean’s Lawrence of Arabia, and several other movies have claimed the Best Picture Oscars. ‘The Jinx’ Filmmaker Andrew Jarecki Says Despite True-Crime Boom Robert Durst “Is Kind of a Unicorn”
Image
Since HBO’s The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst aired in 2015, Durst, who was arrested shortly before the docuseries’ shocking finale, was convicted of murder in 2021 before dying months later.

In that time, true-crime projects have proliferated in the wake of hits like The Jinx and contemporary docuseries Making a Murderer, the podcast Serial and based-on-a-true-story fictional series like The People v. O.J. Simpson and subsequent American Crime Story installments.

Yet despite being part of this early true-crime wave, The Jinx filmmaker Andrew Jarecki says that there were things about Durst that made him even more riveting than an unsolved murder.

“I think Bob is kind of a unicorn because he’s so unusual, because he’s such a powerful personality and also reckless and also willing to be honest about things that most people aren’t honest about, so you feel like you’re seeing inside him,...

2024 Oscars Best Original Screenplay nominees: 1 past champ and 7 rookies
Image
The films in contention for the 2024 Best Original Screenplay Oscar are “Anatomy of a Fall,” “The Holdovers,” “Maestro,” “May December,” and “Past Lives.” Our odds currently indicate that “Anatomy of a Fall” (16/5) will take the prize, followed in order of likelihood by “The Holdovers” (37/10), “Past Lives” (9/2), “Maestro” (9/2), and “May December” (9/2).

Of the eight individual writers behind these five films, only Josh Singer (“Maestro”) has earned recognition in this category before. Indeed, he is looking to go two-for-two here after succeeding on his 2016 bid for “Spotlight,” which he co-wrote with its director, Tom McCarthy. Coincidentally, he shares his new nomination with the director of “Maestro,” Bradley Cooper, who also has a personal stake in the Best Picture and Best Actor races as a producer and star of the same film.

With this original writing notice, Cooper’s Oscars resume now includes five different categories, the remaining two of which are Best...

Oscar history could be key to predicting Original Screenplay winner
Image
“Anatomy of a Fall” is the clear favorite to win Best Original Screenplay this year but nominees “The Holdovers,” “Past Lives,” “Maestro,” and “May December” are all hoping to spoil the party. But is “Anatomy of a Fall’s” status as frontrunner as solid as it seems? It’s won a bunch of precursor awards, sure, but what about the academy?

What movies do they like best in this category? Let’s take a look at the last 10 winners of Best Original Screenplay to see what they can tell us about the academy’s tastes in this category, and how that affects “Anatomy of a Fall” and this year’s nominees.

As you can see, drama is the order of the day for academy voters. Five out of the last 10 winners here have been serious fare: Kenneth Branagh‘s “Belfast,” Emerald Fennell‘s “Promising Young Woman,” and Kenneth Lonergan‘s...

An Oscar bookend for ‘Maestro’ writer Josh Singer?
Image
Comb through the Oscar nominations this year and you’ll find that there records being broken left, right, and center while more records could be matched or broken at the ceremony this coming Sunday on March 10.

One of those such records concerns the Best Original Screenplay category, in which the nominees are “Anatomy of a Fall” (Justine Triet and Arthur Harari), “The Holdovers” (David Hemingson), “Maestro” (Bradley Cooper and Josh Singer), “May December” (Samy Burch and Alex Mechanik), and “Past Lives” (Celine Song).

It’s “Maestro” co-scribe Singer we’re looking at here for his work in penning the Netflix biopic. This is his second nomination. His first bid came in 2016, when he won this very category, Best Original Screenplay, alongside director Tom McCarthy for “Spotlight.” It’s interesting that Singer now has two nominations in the same category, both of which came for co-writing a script based on a...

Director Thomas Bidegain Denies Jake Gyllenhaal’s Behavior Ruined Their Film, but Says ‘We Didn’t Have the Same Vision’
Image
French director Thomas Bidegain is setting the record straight about Jake Gyllenhaal and Vanessa Kirby’s exit from his project “Suddenly.”

An interview with Bidegain that ran last week in the French magazine Technikart got international attention, with the headline “Four Days to Bury a Movie.” The interview suggested that Gyllenhaal and Kirby had left the film in the last stretch of pre-production in Iceland, which resulted in a loss of $26 million.

According to the story, Gyllenhaal dove into the freezing ocean, demanded multiple rewrites and rehearsed scenes in a mocking “Pepe Le Pew-like accent.” Though Bidegain wouldn’t address those specific claims, he tells Variety that he parted ways with Gyllenhaal and Kirby over a creative clash, rather than unprofessional behavior on Gyllenhaal’s part. He also claims that, contrary to what is suggested in the French article, the company which financed “Suddenly,” Studiocanal, didn’t lose $26 million because...
