It’s the end of the road for Queen Latifah’s “The Equalizer.”

CBS opted not to renew the drama series for a sixth season, TheWrap has learned, leaving to end with its fifth season. The Season 5 finale, airing May 4, will now serve as the show’s series finale.

In the reimagining of the classic “Equalizer” series, which originally ran from 1985-1989, Queen Latifah stars as Robyn McCall, who is described as “an enigmatic woman with a mysterious background who uses her extensive skills as a former CIA operative to help those with nowhere else to turn.”

She stars in “The Equalizer” alongside Lorraine Toussaint, Tory Kittles, Adam Goldberg, Liza Lapira and Laya DeLeon Hayes.

CBS has canceled the reboot of “The Equalizer” after five seasons, Variety has learned.

The series, which is led by Queen Latifah, was the last remaining bubble show at the broadcast network. The season finale airing on May 4 will now serve as the series finale.

Previously, CBS had canceled the freshman multi-cam “Poppa’s House” as well as both “FBI: International” and “FBI: Most Wanted.” CBS had also aired a backdoor pilot for a potential “Equalizer” spinoff earlier this season, which is also not moving forward.

The move to cancel “The Equalizer” is not altogether surprising, as the show was also on the bubble last season. It is co-produced by CBS Studios and outside studio Universal Television, making it a less attractive option for CBS financially, particularly this late in its run. After four critically acclaimed seasons, CBS's Queen Latifah-led crime drama may be exploring the possibility of a spinoff series. In an upcoming episode, The Equalizer will introduce two new characters who carry the potential to spark their own variation on the original 1985 Equalizer series and movie reboot of the same name.

Per a report by Deadline, casting is now underway for both roles. One of the new characters is a mysterious female martial artist, weapons expert, and criminologist who, like many of the show's characters, turns to Robyn McCall (Queen Latifah) as a last-ditch effort for help. The other is an older male and former CIA operative who may or may not have a prior history with McCall from their time at the agency. The Equalizer is the #1 entertainment program among African American viewers. It is a top 10 primetime broadcast drama, ranking #8 overall season-to-date with 7.89 million viewers, according to Nielsen Most Current Data.

Additionally, the series reaches over 10 million viewers in live plus 35-day multiplatform viewership. This renewal brings The Equalizer through its fifth season.

The show is a reimagining of the 1985-89 series of the same name and not connected to the Denzel Washington-led film franchise that’s also inspired by the original series.

With the renewal, The Equalizer will pass the original series in the number of seasons it has aired (though not yet in episode count — the 1980s series ran for 88 episodes, and the current show will end this season with 56).

With the pickup of The Equalizer, CBS has only one scripted series — NCIS: Hawai’i — awaiting word on its future. The network plans to announce its 2023-24 schedule on May 2.

The premise of "Air Force One" — President James Marshall (Harrison Ford) foils terrorists who hijack his plane, John McClane-style — requires national unity. The film calls for you to root for the president and only works if the majority of the audience (i.e. the U.S. population) sees their president as an unimpeachable good guy (pun intended). That is simply not the reality of America of 2024. "Air Force One" screenwriter Andrew Marlowe spoke to Syfy recently about why, to use the cliché, the film couldn't be made today.

"When we were doing it, the presidency and that position was not as politically charged as it is today. And so, I think that there are specific challenges about doing it in the contemporary climate that we would have to figure out."

Wolfgang Petersen's appealingly preposterous "Air Force One" required a specific type of leading man to work. The 1997 action-thriller is basically "'Die Hard' on a plane," so you couldn't cast an unstoppable hunk like Arnold Schwarzenegger as a U.S. president forced to save the day when his personal ride is hijacked. (Not that filmgoers would have necessarily bought Arnie as a politician at the time -- we were kind of naive that way.) What you needed was someone who specialized in playing John McClane-types, ergo the sort of action star whose characters were charming and handsome yet far from invulnerable. The film's creatives had the right idea when they tried to recruit Kevin Costner, but the Oscar-winner himself had an even better idea when he passed the script on to Harrison Ford.

We don't love Ford because he's unstoppable. In fact, his characters are imminently stoppable...

"Air Force One" is my favorite "Die Hard" knock-off. Directed by the late Wolfgang Petersen and released in 1997 (when the Cold War was newly over and America was an unrivaled superpower), the film features terrorists hijacking — what else — Air Force One. President James Marshall (Harrison Ford), a Vietnam War veteran, personally defeats them.

Making the President of the United States into John McClane, the quintessential "in the wrong place" everyman? That's some ridiculous high-concept moviemaking I can get on board with.

Now as for the villains, Gary Oldman does his best Hans Gruber as Egor Korshunov. We know what he wants: a restored Soviet Union. When he's called about his demands, he waxes poetic about seeing "The capitalists dragged from the Kremlin," and he throws in Marshall's face about how America has "given [Russia] to gangsters and prostitutes."

In Wolfgang Petersen's 1997 thriller "Air Force One," Harrison Ford plays President James Marshall, the rare commander-in-chief who is just as capable at punching a-holes in the jaw as he is at policy. Although the Cold War was over by 1997 — the Russian coup d'état happened in 1991 — Russians were still a handy movie "bad guy" in American cinema for a few extra years. As such, the bad guy in "Air Force One" was a bitter Russian jerkwad named Egor Korshunov (Gary Oldman) who felt the collapse of the Soviet Union could still be undone. President Marshall didn't take kindly to Korshunov's attempts to hijack Air Force Once, and the President kills multiple Russian goons over the course of the movie.

The film ends with Korshunov and Marshall grappling near an open cargo bay door, engaging in an action movie's usual round of merry fisticuffs. Before dispatching with Korshunov, Marshall angrily yells "Get off my plane!

I think we can all agree that James Marshall was one of our greatest presidents. I mean, he single-handedly stopped a terrorist attack and saved his entire family in the process!

What's that? You don't remember that happening? And you don't remember President James Marshall ever holding office? Well, that's because none of this happened ... in the real world. But in the wonderful world of movies, James Marshall was indeed a president who kicked some ass, and was played by none other than Harrison Ford in the Wolfgang Petersen blockbuster "Air Force One."

In that very silly, very enjoyable film, the official airplane of the President of the United States is seized by terrorists (lead by Gary Oldman!). The President and his family are taken hostage. But this is not your average Potus! No, James Marshall is a Vietnam veteran and a war hero, so he knows how to handle himself.

Andrew W Marlowe, the writer of 1997 action-thriller Air Force One, has talked about the sequel ideas that never came to pass.

Almost three decades on, “Get off my plane” remains one of the best, most gloriously silly lines in action cinema. But according to the man who wrote it – Andrew W Marlowe – it nearly didn’t make it into the script at all.

“I was always concerned that the line was a little cheesy, so I was like, ‘Okay, I’m gonna think of something better,'” he told SyFy in a new interview.

“And then I didn’t and when Harrison performed it, it turned out just to be pitch perfect for the character. Harrison really took ink on paper and breathed enormous life into it, so that it even reverberates today.”

Air Force One – which found president Harrison Ford telling that darn Korshunov to “Get off my plane!” – was a massive hit at the box office, taking in $173 million domestically and another $142 million in the international market to be one of Wolfgang Petersen’s biggest hits. And so, with the influx of sequels in the ‘90s, it’s a bit surprising that Air Force One never had a follow-up. Come on, the vice president literally flies on Air Force Two!

Getting a sequel to Air Force One off the ground was in consideration for a while but as screenwriter Andrew W. Marlowe told Syfy Wire, it was the repetitive nature of franchises like Die Hard that kept another installment from ever happening, saying, “…every time John McClane goes on vacation or goes anywhere, the terrorists take over.” As such, he and some execs at Beacon Pictures could never come up with a passable idea.

Air Force One sequel or reboot faces challenges due to the potential absurdity of constantly hijacked flights and the difficulty in maintaining the original's success. The unlikelihood of the original cast and crew's return poses another problem for a sequel, but a reboot could overcome this issue. Political sensitivity surrounding terrorism and the Presidency today would require careful balance in a sequel or reboot of Air Force One.

It has been 27 years since Air Force One's 1997 release, and one of its writers is opening up about whether the movie needs a sequel. The movie featured an all-star cast, including Harrison Ford, Gary Oldman, Glenn Close, and more leading actors. Former costars and producers are paying tribute following the news of Annie Wersching’s death on Sunday at the age of 45.

Kiefer Sutherland, who played Jack Bauer opposite Wersching’s Renee Walker in Seasons 7 and 8 of Fox’s 24, tweeted that the actress was “one of the greatest actors I’ve ever had the pleasure of working with, and my friend.” He added: “My heart breaks for her young family. May she be remembered for the beautiful person that she was.”

Many did not know actress Annie Wersching’s cancer diagnosis, and woke up today shocked to learn she had died at age 45.

Tributes poured forth from those who had worked with her on the long list of shows she graced. A few of the early reactions.

Kiefer Sutherland, star and executive producer of 24, remembered Wersching who was a series regular on Seasons 7 and 8 of the real-time drama.

“The world lost a light today,” Sutherland wrote on Twitter. “Annie Wersching was one of the greatest actors I’ve ever had the pleasure of working with, and my friend. My heart breaks for her young family. May she be remembered for the beautiful person that she was.”

CBS on Thursday morning announced a renewal for The Equalizer, keeping it on the air through 2024.

“The Equalizer continues to pack a powerful punch on Sunday nights, and we’re thrilled to have it back for two more seasons,” Thom Sherman, CBS Entertainment’s Senior EVP of Programming, said in a statement.

“The success of The Equalizer is due to the sum of its parts – an outstanding cast led by the superb Queen Latifah, plus the exceptional creative team that has continued to evolve their storytelling with a compelling mix of everyday justice, family dynamics and real-world issues that connect and resonate with audiences.”

The Equalizer Season 2 is currently averaging 9.5 million viewers and a 0.9 rating in the demo with a week of DVR factored in.

In the demo, it ranks #3 out of the 14 dramas on the network this season.

CBS has renewed its hit drama The Equalizer, starring Queen Latifah, for Seasons 3 and 4, beginning with the 2022-2023 broadcast season, the network announced Thursday.

The two-season renewal reflects the strength of The Equalizer‘s ratings performance — it is Sunday’s #1 scripted series, averaging 9.46 million viewers. Season to date, the show has amassed 1.2 billion potential social media impressions, according to CBS. In anticipation of a pickup, The Equalizer recently set new showrunners, Joseph C. Wilson and Adam Glass, who will succeed at the helm the series’ developers, Andrew W. Marlowe and Terri Edda Miller.

Additional renewals are expected in the coming days. As Deadline’s Nellie Andreeva previously reported CBS’ top scripted series, FBI, as well as spinoffs Most Wanted and International are in renewal negotiations with lead studio Universal Television and fully expected to continue, also possibly with multi-year renewals. Fellow Uni TV co-produced Magnum P.I. also has a chance to return.

Robyn McCall’s quest for justice will keep going. CBS announced Thursday that The Equalizer has been renewed for not one, but two more seasons.

The supersized renewal guarantees that the Queen Latifah hit will run at least four seasons, through 2024.
