Jason Returns in Hellish 4K from Arrow Video
Image
One of the wildest, most divisive entries in the Friday the 13th franchise is being resurrected in style this spring, as Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday arrives in a feature-packed, Limited Edition 4K Ultra HD on 19 May 2025. Courtesy of a newly restored dual-cut release, fans can now revisit the gonzo ninth instalment of the series with the sharpest image and most complete behind-the-scenes archive yet.

First unleashed in 1993 and directed by Adam Marcus, Jason Goes to Hell boldly took the franchise into supernatural territory, tossing out the traditional Crystal Lake stalk-and-slash formula in favour of something far stranger. After Jason Voorhees is seemingly obliterated by a Swat-style ambush in the film’s opening minutes, his spirit lives on, possessing one unlucky soul after another in a relentless, body-swapping quest to be reborn.

The result is a slasher that plays more like a mad science fiction-horror hybrid, gleefully loaded with gore,...

Get the story of Jason Goes to Hell directly from the makers in the trailer for Hearts of Darkness: The Making of the Final Friday
Image
Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday was a bonkers sequel that took the simple masked slasher movie franchise to new heights (or new depths?). The early 90s film that attempted to end the franchise was hated by critics and very divisive with fans. However, now you can get the full story of what the creative people were thinking as director Adam Marcus recalls being a bright-eyed, fresh-faced film student who was given the keys to the kingdom and didn’t exactly know what to do with the newly purchased property from New Line Cinema. The trailer for Hearts of Darkness: The Making of The Final Friday is now here.

Marcus has spoken directly with fans as he announced that the documentary is “almost 2 hours long.” The Blu-ray edition will feature “another 2 hours of goodness that we could not fit in a theatrical feature film! Oh yeah! We’ve got...

Why Jason Voorhees Never Talks In The Friday The 13th Movies
Image
In Sean Cunningham's 1980 slasher "Friday the 13th," Jason Voorhees is little more than the subject of a notorious ghost story. Camp counselors at Camp Crystal Lake, New Jersey, loved to scare young campers by telling them the very true story of the developmentally disadvantaged who wandered off and drowned in the lake decades earlier. It seems that the counselors who were tasked with caring for Jason were too busy copulating to notice he was in danger. Years later, however, counselors are suddenly being systematically murdered by an unseen assailant. Is it Jason returned from the grave, murdering counselors as revenge?

In the first "Friday," it was revealed that Pamela Voorhees (Betsy Palmer), Jason's mother, had snapped and was killing counselors in honor of her dead son. In "Friday the 13th Part 2," however, it was revealed that Jason had been alive all along, and had grown to adulthood living in the woods,...

Finding Heaven in ‘Jason Goes to Hell’: Nine Reasons to Love the Final Friday
Image
Jason Goes To Hell was my entryway into the Friday the 13th franchise. A junior in high school, I’d recently fallen in love with Scream and overcome my childhood fear of slasher killers. My boyfriend suggested we watch one of his favorites: the 9th and purportedly “final” installment in the storied franchise. At the time I was in full agreement with Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) and had no interest in a formulaic film. “What’s the point,” I quoted, “they’re all the same.” But he assured me this one was special.

I begrudgingly pushed play and was hooked from the opening scene. While opinions vary wildly about Jason Goes to Hell, there’s no doubt director Adam Marcus is swinging for the fences. The plot is joyfully bananas and ends in a smorgasbord of murderous possession, decaying bodies, magic books, and minions from hell. But amidst the B-movie lunacy,...

Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday (1993) – What Happened to This Horror Movie?
Image
In the early-to-mid eighties, Jason Voorhees dominated the horror box office. The masked slasher went from jump scare at the end of a movie to a pop culture icon in impressive fashion; enraging conservative parents while delighting teenagers who loved seeing him stalk and kill other teenagers on the big screen. Of the first four films, three of them made over $30 million at the U.S. box office, an impressive feat for the time. However, starting around 1985, with the much-criticized Friday the 13th: A New Beginning the series’ grosses started dwindling. Yes, they were still making money for studio Paramount thanks to their low budgets, but the air was seemingly coming out of the franchise the longer it went along. The low point, in several ways, was the release of Jason Takes Manhattan, a movie where the fans finally had to admit Jason’s machete blade had become quite dull.

10 Greatest '90s Slasher Horror Movies, Ranked
Image
Horror movies have covered a wide range of sub-genres since the earliest days of Hollywood, from supernatural haunting stories to creature feature monster movies. One of the greatest corners of the genre is the slasher, which has given horror some of its greatest icons, from Leatherface and Michael Myers to Jason Voorhees and Freddy Krueger. Every decade puts its spin on the sub-genre, and the 1990s were no different.

While the 1990s posted a relatively weak output of slashers, it did deliver some of the genre's most iconic and unique stories, particularly fresh and original ideas. From new franchises bringing the horror genre to new heights to sequels that tried something new, the decade is surprisingly dynamic and versatile. After years of supernatural franchises, the turn of the century looked more towards more grounded takes on the genre, leaning into a balance between horror and thriller for some of its best stories.

Jason Goes to Hell director confirms the divisive Friday the 13th movie is coming to 4K
Image
Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday may be one of the most divisive movies in the Friday the 13th franchise, but I’m sure fans would jump at the chance to own the film on 4K Ultra HD. There have been rumblings that Arrow Video might be working on a 4K release of the sequel, which director Adam Marcus has confirmed.

“I just supervised the 4K restoration, Color timing and clean up with cinematographer William Dill,” Marcus revealed on X. “It’s the uncut version and it’s never looked better.” It’s not clear when Jason Goes to Hell might be released, but I’d imagine we’ll hear a more official announcement before too long. Arrow Video released a 4K version of the Friday the 13th remake just last month.

All 12 Friday The 13th Movies, Ranked
Image
The Friday the 13th franchise started as a way to cash in on the success of Halloween, and several Jason movies have matched up to the John Carpenter classic in terms of success. Director Sean S. Cunningham took an ad out in Variety calling it "The Most Terrifying Film Ever Made," all before the movie even had a plot, according to Crystal Lake Memories: The Complete History of Friday The 13th. Other films had the same goal of matching up a camp setting or day on the calendar to a slasher killer, but they never had the pure effect of Friday the 13th.

With writing that feels organic to the characters and the time period, Friday the 13th set a precedent that 11 follow-up movies have tried to match or top. These movies brought more victims to Crystal Lake for Jason Vorhees to dispatch. Soon, the Jason movies took him away from the lake setting,...

Hearts of Darkness: documentary on Jason Goes to Hell completes the editing stage

A documentary covering the 1993 Friday the 13th sequel Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday (Watch It Here – OWN It Here) has been in the works for quite a while, and about eight months ago Jason Goes to Hell director Adam Marcus took to social media to give a promising update on its progress, saying that it was about to go through the color timing and sound mixing stages of post-production. Texas Chainsaw Massacre Timeline, Explained
Image
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is one of the oldest and most notable movie franchises in the horror genre, and after 50 years, it's still going strong. That being said, like all iconic series, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise is not without its issues. One of the most notable things fans complain about is the significantly convoluted timeline, which can make it difficult to dive in and start watching. With multiple films spread out over five decades -- and different filmmakers delivering their own interpretation of the ghoulish Sawyer family -- establishing a single coherent story thread is nearly impossible.

There are nine movies in the franchise, with the first movie, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, dating back to 1974. The subsequent installments in the series establish a complicated timeline, with many films acting as simple sequels, while others fit under the remake, reboot, and prequel umbrellas. Still, the premise is pretty simple,...

Screambox Serves Up a Holiday Feast With ‘Secret Santa’, ‘Night of the Missing’, ‘Santastein’ and More!
Image
Tis the season to be scary and Screambox has got you covered with a trio of brand-spanking-new Christmas-themed horror movies that go perfectly with cookies and milk in front of a warm fire.

Now streaming on Screambox from the director of Jason Goes to Hell is Secret Santa and the awesomely creepy anthology Night of the Missing.

That’s not all! Just in time for Christmas break, Santastein will make the long winter’s nights anything but silent on Dec. 19.

Since Black Christmas, holiday films have been a refreshing sub-genre within horror. These films offer a much-needed contrast to the “all is well” narrative that is so often depicted in seasonal films. The angst and anxiety of holiday horror offer a cathartic release because for many the holidays are not perfect, and we don’t see ourselves in the yuletide rom-coms.

In fact, Screambox has more than stocking stuffers, with...

Texas Chainsaw 3D lost its cannibalism because of Midnight Meat Train and lost massacres due to budget
Image
2023 marks the 50th anniversary of the events of the original The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, the 20th anniversary of the release of the remake, and also the tenth anniversary of an entry in the franchise that has less fans than those two just mentioned: Texas Chainsaw 3D (watch it Here). Recently, our friends at Bloody Disgusting sat down for an interview with one of the film’s writers, Adam Marcus, and during their chat Marcus revealed that the movie lost its cannibalism due to the box office failure of The Midnight Meat Train and lost a couple massacres due to the lower-than-expected budget.

Directed by John Luessenhop and sporting a story credited to Stephen Susco, Adam Marcus, and Debra Sullivan, and a screenplay by Marcus, Sullivan, and Kirsten Elms, Texas Chainsaw 3D has the following synopsis: Decades ago, residents of Newt, Texas, long suspected that the Sawyer family was responsible for the disappearances of many people.

30-Year-Old Friday The 13th Gore Effect Makes Surprise Cameo In New Horror Movie
Image
A makeup effect from Jason Goes to Hell made a surprise cameo in director Adam Marcus' 2018 movie Secret Santa. The director still had old makeup from the Friday the 13th movie and decided to reuse it to create a $10,000 effect for Michael Rady's death scene in Secret Santa. Marcus noted Rady's resemblance to his brother Kipp Marcus, who played Officer Randy Parker in Jason Goes to Hell.

It has been revealed that a makeup effect from Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday made a surprise reappearance decades later. The 1993 movie, which was directed by Adam Marcus, was the ninth entry in the Friday the 13th slasher franchise. It featured the iconic killer Jason Voorhees revealing the heretofore unseen power of transferring his soul into new bodies and continuing his Crystal Lake rampage anew while possessing various people across town as he pursues his last remaining family members...

Exclusive Interview: ‘Jason Goes to Hell’ Director Adam Marcus Talks ‘Secret Santa’ and What’s Next
Image
Horror fans will recognize Adam Marcus as the director of Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday and the co-writer of Texas Chainsaw 3D, two divisive but oft-discussed entries in their respective franchises. He recently returned to the genre to helm Secret Santa, a holiday horror-comedy streaming exclusively on Screambox.

The final installment in our three-part interview with the raconteur focuses on Secret Santa and the trials and tribulations of independent filmmaking. He also teases several projects that are in the works, including a monstrous collaboration with special effects legend Robert Kurtzman.

Secret Santa was born out of Marcus and his writing partner/wife Debra Sullivan’s frustration with the lack of creative control they had on their two previously produced screenplays, 2013’s Texas Chainsaw and 2015’s Momentum. “Artistically, it just started to feel really hollow. I was like, ‘Did I get into this to make money, or did I...

Hated Friday the 13th Sequel Director Recalls Intense Backlash to Controversial Jason Story: "They’re Not Your Average Haters."
Image
Jason Goes to Hell received intense backlash from both critics and fans, making it the most negatively received installment in the franchise. Director Adam Marcus faced extreme responses from fans, including being wished cancer, but still defends the film as an important part of the franchise's canon. The movie's unique premise, lack of screen time for Jason, and criticisms of its plot and acting contributed to its poor performance at the box office.

When it comes to critical praise, the Friday the 13th franchise has never been on the receiving end of many positive comments. However, of the 12 entries in the franchise, from its 1980 original through to the 2009 reboot, none received more of a slaughtering than Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday. With the movie having celebrated its 30th anniversary earlier this year, director Adam Marcus recently reflected on the intense backlash the movie received from critics and fans alike.

"They Wish Me A— Cancer": Jason Goes To Hell Director Details Backlash From Friday The 13th Fans For Infamous Sequel
Image
Director Adam Marcus faced intense backlash over his film Jason Goes to Hell, with fans accusing him of ruining their childhood and wishing him harm. Fans who disliked the movie are passionate and knives-out from the get-go, with some even going as far as casual bullying on social media. The film's poor reception was due to clumsy writing, lackluster acting, and a perceived lack of originality on the director's part. It is considered one of the worst in the franchise.

Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday director Adam Marcus recalls the backlash he faced after the release of the infamous sequel. The ninth installment in the popular Friday the 13th franchise saw iconic slasher Jason Voorhees return as a malevolent spirit seeking the means to resurrect himself following his death in the movie's opening. The sequel, which starred John D. LeMay, Kane Hodder, Kari Keegan, and Steven Williams, was...

Exclusive Interview: Writer Adam Marcus Reveals the Version of ‘Texas Chainsaw 3D’ We Never Got
Image
Horror fans will recognize Adam Marcus as the director of Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday and the co-writer of Texas Chainsaw, two divisive but oft-discussed entries in their respective franchises. He recently returned to the genre to helm Secret Santa, a holiday horror-comedy streaming exclusively on Screambox.

The second installment in our three-part interview with the raconteur focuses on Texas Chainsaw, the 2013 direct sequel to 1974’s The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, including glimpses at how the original screenplay differs from the final movie.

“When you see the line ‘Do your thing, cuz’ and people are angry at you for writing it, and you didn’t write it, you just start getting really frustrated about the state of modern filmmaking and the voice that filmmakers have,” Marcus confesses.

The Grudge scribe Stephen Susco wrote the first draft, but as Marcus tells it, “Lionsgate did not want his script because it was about cannibals.

Jason Goes to Hell’s Creighton Duke to return for another battle with evil… sort of
Image
Five years have gone by since Adam Marcus, the director of the 1993 Friday the 13th sequel Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday (Watch It Here – OWN It Here), first mentioned that he was interested in revisiting that film’s badass bounty hunter character Creighton Duke, who was played by Steven Williams. Marcus has been focused on putting together the documentary Hearts of Darkness: The Making of the Final Friday in recent years, but now that the documentary is almost finished, he has confirmed to Bloody Disgusting that he still intends to bring back Creighton Duke for another movie. Sort of. You see, since Duke is a Friday the 13th franchise character, Marcus doesn’t actually own the rights to use him in any other projects. So the character is going to have to have a different name – but it sounds like it’s going to be pretty obvious that...

“People who don’t like Jason Goes to Hell are rabid. They’re not your average haters; they’re knives-out from the second you meet them,” Marcus says with a chuckle. “When people go, ‘That’s not canon,’ I’m like, ‘No, bitches, it’s canon! I made Jason a Deadite. I did that!'” he beams.

‘Secret Santa’ – Unwrapping the ‘Jason Goes to Hell’ Director’s Christmas Horror Comedy
Image
The frightful weather outside has nothing on the family gathering in Secret Santa. Adam Marcus, who is best known for unleashing the gonzo Friday the 13th entry Jason Goes to Hell upon the world, truly outdid himself with this over-the-top Christmas horror movie. Which is saying a lot considering the events of Jason Voorhees’ sole ‘90s outing. After some time away from the genre, though, Marcus returned in 2018 with a comedy as black as coal. Christmas cynics will naturally be drawn to the promise of a family going off the deep end during the holidays. However, this seasonal shocker may prove to be too much even for the biggest of scrooges.

For many folks, Christmas is the most joyous time of the year. For April Pope (A. Leslie Kies) and other members of her family, it’s the most dreadful. The director’s own internal struggle with Christmas is channeled...

Screambox Serves Up a Holiday Feast With ‘Secret Santa’, ‘Night of the Missing’, and ‘Santastein’!
Image
In case you missed it earlier this week… Tis the season to be scary, as Bloody Disgusting announces the acquisition of three new holiday horror titles for the Screambox streaming service – Secret Santa, Night of the Missing, and Santastein will make the long winter’s nights anything but silent!

We’re thrilled to be releasing these films because they offer something for everyone; whether you want to laugh, scream or just have fun, you can find it on Screambox!

Secret Santa

The first of the three films we’re unwrapping is Secret Santa,...

Hearts of Darkness: epic documentary on Jason Goes to Hell is almost finished
Image
This past Sunday, August 13th, marked the thirtieth anniversary of one of the most divisive entries in the Friday the 13th franchise, 1993’s Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday (Watch It Here – OWN It Here). To mark the occasion, Jason Goes to Hell director Adam Marcus took to social media to announce that an epic documentary on the film, Hearts of Darkness: The Making of the Final Friday, is almost finished!

Marcus said, “The picture is locked. Our soundtrack is just days away from completion. It will only have to go through Color Timing next week, Sound Mix the week after and then has to be seen by our legal team (Larry Zerner in Jason’s house!) and then we’re done! I will, at that time, include all of you in what we are working on for our Distribution and Film Festival & Convention schedule. You are, after all,...

"Jason Is a Deadite": Evil Dead Confirmed Huge Friday The 13th Theory
Image
Everyone knows Jason Voorhees as the hockey-mask wearing killer of the Friday the 13th franchise, but is it possible he has a connection to the Evil Dead universe? According to one comic, Mrs. Voorhees’ favorite boy may in fact be a Deadite.

The comic in question that reveals Jason’s Deadite heritage is 2007/2008’s Freddy vs. Jason vs. Ash, the monumental crossover series between the Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday the 13th and Evil Dead franchises. Co-published by DC’s Wildstorm imprint and Dynamite Entertainment, the six-issue miniseries began life as a film sequel to 2003’s Freddy vs. Jason, the long-awaited mash-up of those slasher icons. Film producer Jeff Katz wrote a treatment for a follow-up to that film that saw Freddy and Jason going up against Evil Dead’s Ash Williams, but the proposed sequel was ultimately nixed by actor Bruce Campbell. Never letting a good idea go to waste,...

‘The Texas Chain Saw Massacre’ 4K Review – The Original Horror Classic Cuts Deeper Than Ever Before
Image
I thought I was done buying The Texas Chain Saw Massacre after upgrading to the 40th anniversary edition Blu-ray in 2014. Between the crisp presentation and the copious extras, I was certain it was the definitive version of Tobe Hooper‘s 1974 masterpiece. Yet here I am, nearly a decade later, ready to sing the praises of Dark Sky Films‘ 4K Ultra HD edition.

Long before “gritty” was an industry buzzword, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre epitomized the term. As such, one might be wary that a 4K restoration could hinder the viewing experience, but that is not at all the case. Utilizing the 4K scan from the aforementioned Blu-ray, which was approved by Hooper, and now with a wider color gamut courtesy of Hdr, the picture is presented in staggering clarity while maintaining the 16mm film grain. The oppressive heat is virtually palpable.

Co-written by Hooper and Kim Henkel, the plot...

Texas Chainsaw 3D star Alexandra Daddario says the filming location may be haunted
Image
About a year and a half ago, Texas Chainsaw 3D (watch it Here) star Alexandra Daddario gave an interview where she had some interesting things to say about her time working on the film (which just celebrated its 10th anniversary earlier this month). Daddario revealed that she had tried to get the “Do you thing, cuz!” line cut, and that she is very grateful to have been in the movie. Not just because she was having trouble getting work at the time, but also because there were severe issues to overcome during the production and it taught her “what happens when things go wrong, what happens when things go right, why did they go wrong, why shouldn’t they have happened, how does the studio get involved when something goes wrong, how studios interact with projects.” Now, during a new interview on The Kelly Clarkson Show, Daddario seems to have...

Is The Friday The 13th Creighton Duke Spinoff Movie Still Happening?
Image
Years after it was originally teased, is a Friday The 13th spin-off featuring bounty hunter Creighton Duke likely to happen? 1993's Jason Goes To Hell: The Final Friday was the ninth outing in the Friday The 13th movie series. Despite its title, the sequel was never intended as the "final" entry and was instead intended to set up the crossover Freddy Vs Jason - which then took another decade to happen. Jason Goes To Hell is easily the most bizarre of the series and tends to rank low among devotees. One of the film's highlights is Steven Williams' hammy turn as Jason's new nemesis, Creighton Duke.

Duke (somehow) figured out that Jason was really a body-hopping entity, and only a member of his family could slay him for good. In 2018, director Adam Marcus stated his intent to Cinema Toast Crunchcast (via io9) to helm a spin-off fronted by Williams' Duke.

Awfully Good: Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday (1993)
Image
If the new Halloween movie wasn’t Halloween-y enough for you, well, you probably also hated this other “final” franchise film…

Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday (1993)

Director: Adam Marcus

Stars: Kane Hodder, Steven Williams, Erin Gray

Is There A Plot?

Despite already having a “Final Chapter” five movies earlier, Jason Voorhees is once again killed, allowing the residents of Crystal Lake to relax for the first time in a decade. But, of course, just because his body was destroyed, it doesn’t mean the hockey-masked murderer is done murdering.

What’S The Damage?

Similar to how some are saying Halloween Ends isn’t really a Halloweeen movie and complaining about Michael Myers’ noticeable absence, one could make the same claim about Jason Goes To Hell: The Final Friday, which barely counts as an entry in the franchise and also features a title killer who sits out the majority of his own film.
