‘Grotesquerie’ star Niecy Nash-Betts on that shocking coma twist, and Travis Kelce’s ‘greedy’ appetite
Image
FX's Grotesquerie begins with Niecy Nash-Betts' Det. Lois Tryon investigating several horrific murders in a small town, but viewers are soon thrown for a loop when it's revealed that the character is actually — spoiler alert! — in a coma. It's a classic TV twist that producer Ryan Murphy has become known for.

"I will probably be working with Ryan until the day they throw dirt on my face," Nash-Betts tells Gold Derby. "I love Ryan Murphy. I love him as a partner. I love him as a creator. I was so interested to see what was next, what was going on in his mind. And when I read that script — oh my gosh!"

Nash-Betts won an Emmy for another Murphy project, Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, and she's soon returning to his universe in the upcoming Hulu legal series All's Fair, which will costar Kim Kardashian, Glenn Close, Sarah Paulson,...

‘Shadow Force’ Review: Kerry Washington and Omar Sy Try, in Vain, to Keep Spy Flick Afloat
Image
Let’s face it: Family life and being members of an elite assassination squad just don’t mix.

It’s hopefully a problem to which few readers can relate, but it afflicts the central characters of Joe Carnahan’s new action film, which quietly snuck into theaters without advance screenings. Kerry Washington and Omar Sy play Kyrah and Issac, who used to be members of the titular organization until they made the mistake of falling in love and having a baby. They’ve since gone rogue, but in a modern manner: Issac stays home and cares for their young son Ky (Jahleel Kamara, adorable), while Kyrah remains in the field to eliminate the many assassins who’ve been assigned to kill them for their transgression. As Issac explains to his son, he and Kyrah used to be bad guys, doing “God’s dirty work” around the globe before they realized...

Paul Mescal, Letitia Wright, Monica Barbaro And Nicola Coughlan To Make Star Debuts At London’s National Theatre
Image
Gladiator II’s Paul Mescal, A Complete Unknown’s Monica Barbaro, Black Panther’s Letitia Wright and Bridgerton’s Nicola Coughlan will be making their debuts at the National Theatre, regarded by many as Britain’s top cultural institution.

They’re among a host of star names invited to tread the Nt’s boards by Indhu Rubasingham, the organization’s new artistic director and co-chief executive.

The theatre chief also revealed that she and famed rapper and grime music genius Stormzy are developing a show that will be staged at the National at a later date.

Mescal, who by the way has been known to rap, will lead a repertory company at the National’s Lyttelton Theatre in 2027. There he will star in two plays: Tom Murphy’s A Whistle in the Dark, about a married Irishman living in the Midlands who allows his three brothers to lodge with him and his young wife.

2025 Emmys Predictions: Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or a Movie
Image
We will update this article throughout the season, along with all our predictions, so make sure to keep checking IndieWire for the latest news from the 2025 Emmys race. The nomination round of voting takes place from June 12 to June 23, with the official Emmy nominations announced Tuesday, July 15. Afterwards, final voting commences on August 18 and ends the night of August 27. The 77th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards are set to take place on Sunday, September 14, and air live on CBS at 8:00 p.m. Et/ 5:00 p.m. Pt.

The State of the Race

Can only one episode win a performer an Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or a Movie? That’s one of the main questions for the category this year, and one could argue both sides. With only four episodes, “Adolescence” is running the Limited Series conversation much in the same way fellow British Netflix series “Baby Reindeer” did last year.

‘Adolescence’ now predicted to receive 5 acting Emmy nominations: Odds update
Image
Much of the Emmy conversation around Adolescence's acting chances has centered around Stephen Graham and Owen Cooper, as they play the two key characters in the harrowing project. However, Gold Derby is now predicting that five total performers will receive nominations this year.

The four-episode crime drama is created and written by Graham and Jack Thorne, and stars Graham as Eddie Miller, the father of Cooper's 13-year-old Jamie Miller, who is arrested for allegedly stabbing a classmate to death. Each episode is directed by Philip Barantini and filmed in a single take as viewers learn more about Jamie's crime from the viewpoints of the police, his psychiatrist, and his family.

Also expected to nab Emmy nominations for the cast are Ashley Walters as Detective Inspector Luke Bascombe, Erin Doherty as child psychologist Briony Ariston, and Christine Tremarco as Jamie's mother and Eddie's wife, Manda Miller. Cooper and Doherty are...

The State of the Race

It feels even more fair to say this year that the Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series race is the most brutal acting category. “The White Lotus” Season 3 alone could fill all eight nomination slots, and there is an argument to be made that it’s deserved. Star Natasha Rothwell reprised the role she had already been...

Back in 2023, Amazon’s Citadel premiered. Since its April 28, 2023 debut, the series has one six-episode season, with a second season of the popular series on the way. But fans will know that it wasn’t just that.

Namely, the producers announced numerous spin-offs set around the world, and two of these spin-offs – Diana and Honey Bunny – have already been released by Amazon. Sadly, we have some bad news.

Namely, it has officially been confirmed that both Diana and Honey Bunny have been canceled by Amazon, while the main series is still on track.

Amazon Cancels ‘Citadel’ Spinoffs ‘Honey Bunny’ and ‘Diana’
Image
“Citadel” spinoffs “Honey Bunny” and “Diana” have been canceled after one season each at Amazon MGM Studios.

Rather than continuing as individual series, the shows, which are based in India and Italy, respectively, will be woven into the mothership series’ upcoming second season, which will premiere in the second quarter of 2026.

Per its logline, Season 2 of “Citadel” will take place one month after the events of Season 1, following the spies underground as they’re being hunted by Manticore agents around the world. They’re pulled out of hiding to join forces with a new team of unconventional spies when Manticore’s Brazilian billionaire Paulo Braga threatens to unleash a cataclysmic piece of technology, built by Citadel’s own Bernard Orlick, into the world.

“While these successful and widely enjoyed international chapters will not continue as individual series, Season 2 of ‘Citadel’ will be our most exhilarating yet,” Amazon MGM Studios television...

‘Citadel’ Spinoffs ‘Honey Bunny’ and ‘Diana’ Canceled at Prime Video, Will Be Woven Into Season 2 of Mothership Series
Image
“Citadel” international spinoffs “Honey Bunny” and “Diana” will not be moving forward as individual series at Prime Video.

Instead, their storylines will be woven into the second season of mothership series “Citadel,” which is set to premiere next year. The India-set “Honey Bunny” and Italian series “Diana,” both executive produced by the Russo Brothers, followed different sects of the powerful Citadel spy agency for which the show is named.

“While these successful and widely enjoyed international chapters will not continue as individual series, Season 2 of ‘Citadel’ will be our most exhilarating yet,” Amazon MGM Studios head of television Vernon Sanders said in a statement. “With high-stakes storytelling, new additions to our amazing cast and bold, cinematic ambition, the new season will deepen the emotional journeys of Nadia, Mason and Orlick against the relentless force that is Manticore. Travis Kelce for your consideration? Football star among ‘Grotesquerie’ actors submitted for 2025 Emmys
Image
FX's Grotesquerie is submitting seven actors for the 2025 Emmys, including football star Travis Kelce.

The Kansas City Chiefs tight end (and Taylor Swift beau) is eligible in the Best Drama Supporting Actor category for his role as Ed Laclan, a flirtatious hospital orderly who befriends Niecy Nash-Betts' Det. Lois Tryon. As the season progresses — spoiler alert! — viewers learn that Lois is actually in a coma, and that in the real world, Ed has been dating her daughter, Merritt Tryon, played by Raven Goodwin.

Kelce made his scripted series debut in the third episode, when his character lit Lois' cigarette. "You can call me Eddie," he tells her with a cheshire grin. Ed then alludes to the detective's alcoholism when he says, "Something tells me when you're done with your little ciggie break there, you're going to want to get the hell out of here. And I don't blame you.

Tony Talk: Olivier Award winners ‘Benjamin Button,’ ‘Giant,’ and ‘Oedipus’ could make a splash at the 2026 Tonys
Image
Welcome to Tony Talk, a column in which Gold Derby contributors Sam Eckmann and David Buchanan offer Tony Awards analysis. No, your eyes do not deceive you! We are in fact discussing the 2026 Tony Awards today by way of Sunday night's Olivier Award winners in London celebrating the best of British theater.

David Buchanan: We're only three weeks away from the 2025 Tony Awards nominations, but we have to interrupt our predictions to address — believe it or not — the 2026 Tonys! Last night at the Oliviers, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Giant, and Fiddler on the Roof all tied as most-awarded productions of the night with three wins each. But let's start with Oedipus, which not only took home two trophies, but is also confirmed to transfer to Broadway this fall. How do you think its stunning cast, including last night's champ Lesley Manville, might fare stateside next year against a totally unknown Best Actress slate?...

Stranger Things star Joe Keery faces parasitic fungus in upcoming thriller Cold Storage
Image
Step aside, Demogorgons, Steve Harrington has a new dangerous threat to fight. Stranger Things star Joe Keery steps into the shoes of a self-storage employee named Teacake in the upcoming thriller film Cold Storage, to be released later this year.

Teacake and his co-worker Naomi (played by Barbarian star Georgina Campbell) are tasked with monitoring the units within the storage center, which was built in an old US military base. But as these things often go, something escapes and causes catastrophe. In this case, the escapee is a parasitic fungus that rapidly mutates along with the rising temperature within the facility, unleashing "brain-controlling, body-bursting terrors."

The low-level employees are left to fend for themselves against the anomaly alongside a grizzled bioterror operative played by Liam Neeson (Taken). If the trio doesn't prevent the virus from escaping, it could spell the end of humankind.

The Hollywood Reporter shared that Samuel Goldwyn Films...

‘Mr. Burton’ Review: Harry Lawtey Plays the Pride of Wales, and Toby Jones the Man Who Made Him, in a Gentle Showbiz Origin Story
Image
Richard Burton never got around to writing an official set of memoirs before his untimely, alcohol-hastened death in 1984, though the star’s posthumously published diaries are among the great volumes of their kind in the showbiz library: sometimes brutally candid about himself, often savagely catty about others, and reflective of a wry, wicked mind behind the boorish antics that kept him in the headlines. There’s little of that wit or mischief to be found in Marc Evans’ quiet, earnestly soft-hearted biopic “Mr. Burton,” though that discrepancy is at least partly the point.

Dramatizing the Welshman’s formative early years as an actor, from his rough working-class adolescence to the brink of celebrity in his mid-twenties, Evans’ film intends to show us an unformed boy scarcely recognizable as the imposing, burgundy-voiced lead of “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” and “Look Back in Anger,” right down to his unfamiliar childhood name: Richie Jenkins.

‘Snow White’ Holds No. 1 as Mohanlal’s ‘L2: Empuraan’ and Jason Statham’s ‘A Working Man’ Make Strong Debuts at U.K. and Ireland Box Office
Image
Disney’s “Snow White” retained the top spot at the U.K. and Ireland box office for a second week, bringing in £2 million ($2.6 million) and pushing its total to £6.7 million ($8.7 million), according to Comscore.

Leading the newcomers was “L2: Empuraan,” the Malayalam-language action film distributed by Rft Films Ltd. The film, a sequel to 2019’s “Lucifer,” opened with $1.5 million, securing second place and marking one of the strongest regional Indian film debuts in the U.K. in recent years. Starring Mohanlal and from actor-director Prithviraj Sukumaran, the film is the second part in a planned trilogy.

Warner Bros.’ “A Working Man,” starring Jason Statham, debuted at No. 3 with $850,180.

Universal’s “Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy” slipped to fourth but continued its phenomenal run, adding $726,295 in its seventh weekend. The film has now grossed $58.9 million, making it the highest-grossing U.K. release of the year.

In fifth, Paramount’s dark comedy “Novocaine,...

‘Citadel’ Franchise Faces Uncertain Future At Amazon Following Jennifer Salke’s Exit
Image
The surprise departure Thursday of Jennifer Salke, Head of Amazon MGM Studios, inevitably is drawing attention to one of her pet projects, global spy thriller Citadel.

Based on an idea by Salke, Citadel was probably the biggest gamble of her tenure atop Amazon MGM Studios — an ambitious, expansive and expensive multi-series, multi-country endeavor for which she brought in the Russo brothers’ Agbo.

Salke’s exit comes with Season 2 of the mothership series, starring Richard Madden and Priyanka Chopra-Jonas, in post-production, and the first two international spinoff series, the Italian Citadel: Diana and Indian Citadel: Honey Bunny, awaiting word on their future after launching their first seasons in September and December, respectively.

The main series already has been facing immense scrutiny over its tortured development and Season 1 production history that included multiple showrunner changes, multiple cuts and reshoots that reportedly pushed the budget north of $200 million for six episodes. In light...

‘Citadel’ Season 2 Is in Trouble at Amazon as Spin-Offs Get Grim Update
Image
Citadel, the big-budget Prime Video spy series, may have run into a foe more implacable than its sworn enemy, Manticore: production difficulties. The second season of the Richard Madden-Priyanka Chopraseries has been pushed back from fall 2025 to spring 2026. Furthermore, the series' spinoffs are on pause until the flagship series can right itself. The Hollywood Reporter has the news that parent company Amazon is not pleased with what they've seen of Citadel's second season.

Citadel, the brainchild of MCU mavens Joe and Anthony Russo, was positioned as a signature series for Prime Video, and was afforded a budget to match: originally budgeted at $160 million Usd, production issues and reshoots during the filming of its first season bumped it up to $235 million. That made it the second-most expensive TV series ever made, eclipsed only by Prime Video's own Lord of the Rings offshoot, The Rings of Power. Nevertheless, the...

The play is produced by Sonia Friedman Productions, Sue Wagner, John Johnson and Patrick Catullo, in association with Roundabout. John Lithgow in talks to play Dumbledore in Harry Potter TV series
Image
Deadline reports that John Lithgow is in final negotiations to play Professor Albus Dumbledore in HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter series. As has become customary with any of these Harry Potter casting stories, HBO declined to comment. “We appreciate that such a high-profile series will draw a lot of rumor and speculation,” the network said in a statement. “As we make our way through pre-production, we will only confirm details as we finalize deals.“

The casting process for the series has been in full swing, with plenty of names rumoured to be up for the iconic characters. We’ve already seen a few actors eyed for the role of Dumbledore, including Mark Rylance and Mark Strong. Personally, I was rather fond of the idea of Rylance playing the character, but I guess things didn’t work out.
