Upon sweeping the four main drama acting categories at the 2021 Emmy Awards, “The Crown” stars Olivia Colman, Josh O’Connor, Gillian Anderson, and Tobias Menzies all joined a special roster of lead or supporting TV academy honorees who were not part of their shows’ original casts. As members of the expansive Netflix series’ second of three distinct ensembles, this quartet and their co-stars were replaced ahead of season five by a new group of actors, some of whom could be added to said exclusive winners club later this year.
According to Gold Derby’s odds, the performer from the sixth and final season of “The Crown” with the best shot at Emmy glory is supporting female frontrunner Elizabeth Debicki. She played the role of Princess Diana for two seasons, finishing the job started by younger season four cast member Emma Corrin. “The truth’s gonna come out. It always does,” warns Detective Perez (Diana Maria Riva) in the trailer for the final season of Netflix’s “Dead to Me.” She’s addressing Christina Applegate’s Jen, who in the last episodes will continue to be ensnared in the murder investigation of Steve Wood (James Marsden). In its first two seasons, the dark comedy chronicled the fateful friendship and unfortunate connection between Jen and Linda Cardellini’s Judy, and in the last 10 episodes – which drop on Netflix on Nov. 17 – the duo seem closer and more deceitful than ever. Watch the “Dead to Me” final season trailer above.
The third season trailer begins with a mashup of the series’ biggest moments, from the hit-and-run that killed Jen’s husband, to Jen killing Judy’s fiancé Steve, to Judy uncovering a fortune from the canvases of her paintings, and the shocking hit-and-run that ended...

Actors doing good work on network series are sometimes overlooked at Emmy time, though the networks continue to televise the awards ceremony to cash in on advertising revenue. The academy’s snob factor kicks into high gear and performers on premium cable series and streaming shows take priority. This year may be different. Respected veteran character actor John Carroll Lynch, who has played everything from Frances McDormand’s husband, Norm Gunderson, in the 1996 film “Fargo” to a trio of villains on FX’s “American Horror Story,” may crash the party in Best Drama Supporting Actor. It would be his first nomination.

Spirit Awards 2021 Winners List: ‘Nomadland,’ ‘I May Destroy You,’ Riz Ahmed, Carey Mulligan Win Big
“Mank” is the big leader at the 2021 Oscars with 10 nominations, but that wasn’t the case at the 36th Film Independent Spirit Awards. The nomination leader at this ceremony was Eliza Hittman’s acclaimed “Never Rarely Sometimes Always,” which the Academy shut out from the Oscars. The same goes for other beloved Spirit Award nominees like “First Cow,” “Miss Juneteenth,” and “The Assistant.” In other words, the Indie Spirit Awards were a breath of fresh air in this elongated awards season where underdog indie contenders finally get their due in the spotlight.
“Minari” also preformed strong at the Indie Spirits, earning six nominations to match its six Oscar nominations. Fellow Oscar nominees “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” and “Nomadland” each picked up five Spirit Award nominations. Netflix was the most nominated studio with 16 nominations, followed by Focus Features with 10 and A24 with 9.

The 36th Film Independent Spirit Awards are set to take place this week as a welcome reprieve to this elongated Oscar season. Unlike the Academy Awards, where David Fincher’s “Mank” reigns supreme with 10 nominations, the 2021 Indie Spirit Awards are dominated by Eliza Hittman’s “Never Rarely Sometimes Always,” which was shut out of the Oscar nominations. “Never Rarely” boasts seven Spirit Award nominations this year, including Best Feature and Best Director.
Unlike the Oscars, the Spirit Awards also boast a Best First Feature category to honor the greatest directorial debuts of the last year. The 2021 nominees in this category are “I Carry You With Me,” “The 40 Year Old Version,” “Sound of Metal,” “Miss Juneteenth,” and “Nine Days.” Only “Sound of Metal” broke into the Oscars among these nominees.

Michelle Pfeiffer shines in the quirky, new comedic drama French Exit. The film follows Frances Price (Pfeiffer), a widowed New York socialite who, along with son, moves to Paris after squandering what is left of her inheritance. Also accompanying them is the family cat, who may apparently be the reincarnated spirit of Frances’s deceased husband. Once in Paris, they connect with a variety of quirky individuals and eventually end up communicating with the husband/father via a séance and an otherworldly candle. All the while, Frances continues to liquidate her remaining funds towards making her “French exit.”
Along with Frances on her journey is her son, Lucas, played with detached amusement by Malcolm Price. When the film begins, Lucas is engaged to his longtime girlfriend Susan (Imogen Poots), but has no plans to inform his mother of the pending nuptials. This, of course, leads to Susan breaking off the engagement,...

“My plan was to die before the money ran out” has become the anthem and tagline of the Sony Pictures Classics’ French Exit starring Michelle Pfeiffer as a 60-year-old penniless Manhattan socialite – a role that has been earning her plenty of awards season buzz.
Opening in theaters today before expanding nationwide April 2, French Exit is directed by Azazel Jacobs and written by Patrick deWitt, who wrote the bestselling novel on which the movie is based. In it, Pfeiffer plays Frances Price whose life hasn’t gone exactly as planned after her dead husband’s (Tracy Letts) inheritance is gone. She cashes in the last of her possessions and decides to live out her twilight days anonymously in a borrowed apartment in Paris with her directionless son Malcolm (Lucas Hedges) and a cat named Small Frank — who may or may not embody the spirit of her husband.

Azazel Jacobs’ likably odd French Exit is headlined by the that magnetic chill of hers directly in mind. The movie — adapted by Patrick deWitt from his 2018 novel of the same name — is a tale about a classic, monied, New York City eccentric, the kind of person whose status is as obvious, in their utter aloofness to the world, as it is mysterious. Summing this up, somehow, with wonderfully caustic poise is Pfeiffer, who plays Frances Price: a widow on the verge — of going broke.

The previews leading up to this Monday night’s installment of The Bachelor certainly made it seem like Matt James planned to get rid of the show’s bad apples.

In recent years, the Film Independent Spirit Awards nominating juries have looked away from the Oscars, and this year is no exception. But in a sign of the times, the Spirits added new television categories this time around. Thus Netflix dominated the 2021 nominations from the Spirit nominating committees, scoring 11 nominations over seven features and documentaries, plus another five for scripted series, for a total of 16 nominations.
Of the conventional theatrical distributors, Focus Features scored 10 nominations over two films, Eliza Hittman’s Sundance, Berlin, and New York Film Critics Circle-winner “Never Rarely Sometimes Always” with seven, and Emerald Fennell’s “Promising Young Woman” with three. A24, which led the pack last year with 18 nominations over seven films, followed with nine, six for Lee Isaac Chung’s “Minari” and three for Kelly Reichardt’s critics favorite “First Cow” (which won Best Film at the NYFCC).
