The Damned Review: I Was Impressed By This Psychological Period Horror's Ability To Deliver Top-Notch Atmospheric Terror
Image
The Damned has been made to a high standard. The film is extremely well-crafted; the cast, the period setting, and the eerie and isolated fishing village where the story plays out all help to create a tense and believable story as a group of fisherman find themselves the subject of a supernatural attack.

The Damned, set in 19th-century Iceland, follows a widow faced with a dire decision when a shipwreck endangers her struggling fishing village. Amidst a harsh winter, she must weigh the risks of rescuing survivors against the dwindling resources vital for her community's survival.

‘The Damned’ Review: Thordur Palsson’s Atmospheric, If Narratively Thin, Morality Tale
Image
Thordur Palsson’s The Damned coasts on the striking contrasts between the wintry landscapes of its 19th-century setting and the characters who trudge across them in clothes that appear as if they’ve been assembled from blankets or potato sacks. Odessa Young is no less memorable as a young window named Eva, especially in an early scene where she makes it very plain that this woman must always choose her words carefully in the company of men, even among those who so clearly respect her for her savvy.

But there’s evocativeness and then there’s lack of context, and it feels as if the cinematography and Young’s performance are trying to deflect attention from the latter. As indicated by the stories spun by one character (Siobhan Finneran), The Damned draws on Icelandic folklore about the draugr, or reanimated corpse, and from the characters’ names we can, indeed, intuit...

‘As a Prelude to Fear’ Review
Image
Stars: Francis Magee, Lara Lemon, Lucy Drive, Jamie Langlands, Melissa Hollett, Tom Clear, Owen Llwelyn, Roger Wyatt, Peter Rayfield, Amelia Armande, Ron McMillan, Nicola Boreham | Written by Steph Du Melo, Jacob Coen, Roger Wyatt | Directed by Steph Du Melo

As a Prelude to Fear is one of two new horrors from Steph Du Melo and MeloMediaFilms and when I say new horrors I mean new British horrors. Yes folks, we have a newcomer to the UK horror scene, something we keep a close eye on here at Nerdly (that’s why we sponsor both Grimmfest and the Romford Horror Festival), coming out the gate with not one but two films – both of which we’ll be reviewing this week and both of which tackle very different aspects of the genre.

The film tells the story of a young cellist called Eve Taylor (Lara Lemon) who gets kidnapped and imprisoned in a dungeon-like basement,...

Ciarán Hinds, Aidan Gillen, Charlie Cox, and Clare Dunne in Kin (2021)
Kin Season 1 Episode 7 Review: Think Of The Children
Ciarán Hinds, Aidan Gillen, Charlie Cox, and Clare Dunne in Kin (2021)
It's a fight to stay alive, now.

On Kin Season 1 Episode 7, the Kinsellas weigh their options for survival, potentially fracturing.

Amanda is determined to get what she wants at any price.

I'm your solicitor, not your therapist.

Donal Permalink: I'm your solicitor, not your therapist. Added: October 21, 2021

Sam Keeley is an absolute beast throughout this entire episode. At last, we get the opportunity to see his remarkable range as he encompasses all the different sides of Eric.

His scene in the cell is a brilliant metaphor for the whole family's situation.

Eric is in a small room, with violent death threats coming at him from all sides -- but he can't see where they are coming from. He can only rage, pound the walls, and fight back. He doesn't know if his cries will do any good, but he knows he can't just sit there and take it.

In Kin...

What Netflix's White Lines Teaches Us About Healing From the Traumas of Our Past
Image
Netflix's White Lines is an exciting new crime thriller that follows Zoe Walker's journey from Manchester to Ibiza, where she investigates the death of her brother Axel Collins. The key characters of White Lines are all struggling to heal from their traumas of twenty years prior. Particularly with the cases of Zoe, her father Clint Collins, Oriol Calafat, and Axel's best friend Marcus, who all desperately try to rewrite their pasts by diving into their pain. While some, like Anna and Boxer, use love and sex to reveal or hide who they really are, Marcus and Oriol use drugs and alcohol to confront their demons, and Zoe and Clint try to walk in Axel's shoes to better understand him, and cope with their own feelings of grief.

Emma Thompson
Emma Thompson to Star in Extinction Rebellion Climate-Change Satire (Exclusive)
Emma Thompson
Emma Thompson will play a climate-change activist in “Extinction,” a timely satirical short film that will include footage of the Extinction Rebellion group’s ongoing wave of action in London.

Two-time Oscar winner Thompson has herself been involved in the high-profile London-based protests. She addressed crowds over the weekend from Extinction Rebellion’s signature pink boat, which was placed in Oxford Circus, one of the British capital’s busiest intersections, and which will feature in the film. That was part of a series of protests by the group. Its activities are carrying on this week as it lobbies for action against climate change and ecological collapse.

Thompson will play a veteran environmentalist and a highly qualified member of Extinction Rebellion who secures a meeting with a senior government official. She and the Conservative Party lawmaker lock horns as protests and disruption take place outside.

The filmmakers approached the actress in...

Into the Badlands Season 3 Episode 13 Review: Black Lotus, White Rose
Into the Badlands dumps all the info ever just a few episodes before its explosive series finale airs.

TV

This Into The Badlands review contains spoilers.

Into the Badlands Season 3 Episode 13

There’s a scene towards the beginning of the episode where the Magnus of the Black Lotus (Francis Magee) challenges Sunny’s newly revealed long-lost sister Kannin (Eugenia Yuan) with what seems like impossible task: activating her brother’s dark-eyed powers. He picks up a huge hourglass (which he calls “a souvenir from Azra”), turns it over, and sets it down on his table. “You have until the sand runs out to turn him,” Magnus says, and walks out the room, leaving Kannin to wonder how the hell she’s going to make Sunny a dark-eyed one in the next 30 odd minutes.

This scene feels like a metaphor for the writing of this entire episode. “You have until the...

Winterlong review – dodgy subplots blow a hole in gritty father-son tale
David Jackson’s earnest debut is sumptuously shot on England’s south coast but hobbled by hackneyed plotlines

Former TV director David Jackson makes his feature debut with this earnest, technically assured piece of downbeat British social realism. The story is about a middle-aged guy living an almost feral existence at the margins of society who is forced to reconnect with his estranged teenaged son.

The film looks good, and evokes the wild beauty of England’s south coast, thanks to some great location work by cinematographer Ben Cole. Francis Magee delivers his lead performance with conviction, and there is a nice humorous cameo by Doon Mackichan as his neighbour. The problem is that the storytelling is unconvincing: there is a clash between the realist style and the patent unreality in much of the narrative. Moreover, the film winds up with some very naive assumptions about how easy it is...

Lorcan Cranitch, Francis Magee, Emily Taaffe, Brian J. Falconer, Moe Dunford, Andy Tohill, and Ryan Tohill in The Dig (2018)
Film Review: ‘The Dig’
Lorcan Cranitch, Francis Magee, Emily Taaffe, Brian J. Falconer, Moe Dunford, Andy Tohill, and Ryan Tohill in The Dig (2018)
There’s a whole lot of digging, but not much suspense or interest dug up in “The Dig.” This first feature for sibling directorial duo Andy and Ryan Tohill follows several shorts, and probably should’ve been another one: Stuart Drennan’s screenplay scarcely provides enough incident or psychological insight to sustain 90-odd damply atmospheric minutes. Instead, this glum mood piece simply hits the same bleak note over and over to dulling effect, despite a murder-mystery hook that goes barely exploited until the very end. It’s a challenging sit with limited rewards, and is likely to similarly provide a challenge to commercial placements.

There’s no family left to greet Ronan Callahan (Moe Dunford of “Vikings”) when he emerges from a long prison stint, and the rural community he left behind won’t be glad to see him back. He settles as best he can into the near-ruins of his late father’s farmhouse,...

Tiff Review: ‘The Dig’ is a Story of Redemption as Angry as it is Heartfelt
After fifteen years in jail for murder, Ronan Callahan (Moe Dunford) returns home to find his victim’s father caught in a loop. Every day spent behind bars was a day Sean McKenna (Lorcan Cranitch) languished in the bog behind the Callahans’ property, digging holes along a carefully marked grid in search of his daughter’s body. He promised he wouldn’t stop until she was at rest and so he shoveled mud while his wife lay dying of cancer and still shovels mud now that his other daughter Roberta (Emily Taaffe) quit her job to make certain he didn’t die of thirst or starvation. We can therefore assume the “warm” welcome Ronan will receive upon working up the nerve to demand Sean leave. And we can guess what comes next.

The result is The Dig‘s story of redemption and forgiveness that’s as angry as it is heartfelt,...

Moe Dunford in First Trailer for Irish Drama 'The Dig' Playing at Tiff
"Where is she?!" The first trailer has debuted for a film titled The Dig, playing at the Toronto Film Festival next in a few weeks. The first feature made by filmmakers Andy Tohill & Ryan Tohill, this already won Best Irish Feature at the Galway Film Festival earlier this summer. Moe Dunford (from "Vikings") plays a man released from prison after fifteen years for a murder he can’t remember committing. When he returns home, he ends up helping the victim's father find her body by digging in the dirt. The cast includes Emily Taaffe, Francis Magee, and Lorcan Cranitch. The film is still looking for distribution, so this trailer is mainly to drum up interest at Tiff. From the looks of it, this seems very intense, emotional, and seriously impressive. Here's the first festival trailer for Andy & Ryan Tohill's The Dig, direct from Vimeo (via Deadline): After serving fifteen years for murder,...

Dispatch from the La Film Fest 2015: ‘Jimmy’s Hall’
After the foolish fondness of The Angel’s Share (2012), Ken Loach is back in familiar ground with the story of Jimmy Gralton, who built a community hall in Ireland’s County Leitrim in the early 1920s that enraged the local haves. Also involved with reinstating an evicted tenant farmer, he fled to America for ten years or so, before returning to do the same thing all over again. The heart of the film is expressed in the words of his mother, at the hearing on his deportation in 1933 (the only Irishman ever to be deported from his country): “Why is an old tin hall so dangerous?”

The first cause of all the trouble is that education is the preserve of the church, and Father Sheridan is royally pissed – the hall is a place (the only place) for local kids to learn drawing, literature, boxing, and so on. The priest...

Jimmy's Hall (2014)
Ken Loach changes mind about filmmaking retirement
Jimmy's Hall (2014)
Ken Loach has revealed that reports of his retirement are not entirely accurate.

Last year, the 77-year-old filmmaker was reported to be moving into making just documentaries following the release of his latest film Jimmy's Hall.

"This is probably the last narrative feature for Ken," said producer Rebecca O'Brien at the time. "There are a few documentary ideas kicking around, and that will probably be the way to go, but this is a serious period drama with a lot of moving parts so it's a big thing to put together. I think we should go out while we're on top."

However, Loach has now revealed that he has changed his mind in regards to his retirement from drama.

"I kind of thought I wouldn't get through another one just as we were beginning Jimmy's Hall because it's a moment of maximum pressure when you haven't shot a thing but you're knackered from all the prep,...

First Trailer for Ken Loach’s Jimmy’s Hall
Renowned filmmaker Ken Loach returns behind the camera once more this year to bring us another anticipated drama in the form of Jimmy’s Hall, based on the true story of Jimmy Gralton.

Loach, one of the most prolific directors throughout his career, brought us the well-received documentary The Spirit of ’45 last year, and Jimmy’s Hall sees him back in narrative feature territory, following on from 2012’s award-winning The Angels’ Share.

With its release date just around the corner at the end of next month, eOne have released the first trailer to whet our appetites.

In 1921 Jimmy Gralton’s sin was to build a dance hall on a rural crossroads in Ireland where young people could come to learn, to argue, to dream… but above all to dance and have fun. Jimmy’s Hall celebrates the spirit of these free thinkers. The film is set in 1932 and follows events...
