Illuminative, the Native woman-led social justice organization, has announced the launch of the Indigenous House at this year’s Sundance Film Festival.
The Indigenous House will open its doors on Main Street in Park City, Utah, where it will spotlight the creativity of Native peoples, unveil new research on Native voices in media and provide a space for community members and allies to explore issues that impact Native peoples.
“We are beyond thrilled to open the doors to the Indigenous House for the very first time at Sundance Film Festival,” Crystal Echo Hawk, founder and executive director of Illuminative, said in a statement. “Storytelling is a powerful force for change, and we’ve seen firsthand how impactful Native representation is. The entertainment industry has always been one of the biggest perpetrators of our erasure, but Native peoples have flipped the script and are breaking barriers and making incredible strides in representation.

As is the case with most below-the-line Oscar categories, bigger equals better when it comes to Best Production Design. The more lavish the sets, the more accurate the period detail, the more extravagant the designs, the more likely your film will win an Academy Award. Formerly known as Best Art Direction/Set Decoration, this prize goes to the production designer and set decorator, leaving the poor art directors on the outside looking in; perhaps that accounts for the title change. (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2021 Oscar predictions for Best Production Design.)
Like Best Costume Design, this award rarely corresponds with Best Picture. Before “The Shape of Water” prevailed in both categories in 2018, the last to line-up was “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” in 2004. Often, the winner of this race hasn’t even been nominated for the top prize, as was the case with “Memoirs of a Geisha...

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has revealed its 276-member-strong class of 2013.
The list, published by The Hollywood Reporter, includes actors, cinematographers, designers, directors, documentarians, executives, film editors, makeup artists and hairstylists, "members-at-large," musicians, producers, PR folks, short filmmakers and animators, sound technicians, visual effects artists, and writers.
Jason Bateman, Rosario Dawson, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Milla Jovovich, Lucy Liu, Jennifer Lopez, Emily Mortimer, Sandra Oh, Jason Schwartzman, and Michael Peña are among the roster of actors, while "The Heat" and "Bridesmaids" helmer Paul Feig made the directors' cut.
"We did not change our criteria at all," says Academy president Hawk Koch of this year's larger-than-usual class. "Yes, this year there is a tremendous amount of women, a tremendous amount of people of color, people from all walks of life. This year, we asked the branches to look at everybody who wasn't in the Academy but who deserved to be.

The list includes actors, directors, documentarians, executives, film editors, producers and more. Of those listed below, those who accept the invitations will be the only additions to the Academy's membership in 2013. "These individuals are among the best filmmakers working in the industry today," said Academy President Hawk Koch in a press release. "Their talent and creativity have captured the imagination of audiences worldwide, and I am proud to welcome each of them to the Academy." Koch also told Variety, "In the past eight or nine years, each branch could only bring in X amount of members. There were people each branch would have liked to get in but couldn't. We asked them to be more inclusive of the best of the best, and each branch was excited, because they got...

If you didn't tune in for the Academy Awards last night, here's a short breakdown of what you missed: William Shatner showed up from the future, Jennifer Lawrence tripped and fell, and Michelle Obama co-presented the award for Best Picture. It was kind of a weird night, but for the most part, the hardware was handed out to all of the expected parties. Argo won Best Picture, Daniel Day-Lewis won Best Actor and Jennifer Lawrence won Best Actress. If there was a surprise, it was that Life of Pi walked away with the most awards (4) including Best Director for Ang Lee. Zero Dark Thirty got shut out of everything except for Best Sound Editing (in a rare tie with Skyfall). Quentin Tarantino was also a pleasant surprise for Best Original Screenplay. What did you think of this year's Oscars? What was the highlight of the night? How would you rate Seth McFarlane as host?...

This evening’s Oscar ceremony is now over, and with the dust settling on the biggest awards ceremony of the entire year, and the winners and losers celebrating and commiserating together, we’ve put together a full list of the winners (as well as the beaten nominees) for this year’s awards.
Jennifer Lawrence and Jessica Chastain nailed the red carpet, apparently, and Sandra Bullock did wonderful things with a diamond hair-clip, while Bradley Cooper and Chris Pine both proved that beards are very much the hot thing right now. But the big events were yet to happen inside the La venue, as the audience sat ready to receive host Seth MacFarlane, and his inevitably cutting humour.
For the most part, MacFarlane was reserved, though a few barbs did land before the end of the night. He played his part also in the excellent musical staging throughout the ceremony, whose highlights featured Shirley Bassey,...

Odds are stacked heavily on Steven Spielberg film Lincoln bringing the actor his record-breaking third best actor statue
Daniel Day-Lewis stands on the verge of Hollywood history by becoming the Academy awards' most lauded male actor if, as is widely considered likely, he is named as best actor for the third time for his role in Lincoln at the Oscars ceremony on Sunday night.
Eight other male actors, including Jack Nicholson, Sean Penn and Gary Cooper, have two best actor Oscars. Day-Lewis already holds statuettes for My Left Foot and There Will Be Blood (awarded in 1990 and 2008 respectively). Another win will put him out on his own, confirming his position as one of the all-time greats.
Other than Day-Lewis, who holds dual UK-Irish citizenship, British hopes are not invested heavily in the acting categories: unusually for a traditional area of British strength, there is no other UK representation.
The same goes for best director,...

Ben Affleck's "Argo" is not only being celebrated in the U.S., it has also been receiving love abroad particularly at the recently concluded BAFTA Awards (British Academy of Film and Television), the U.K. equivalent to the Oscars.
"Argo" took home the Best Film of the Year trophy, as well as the Best Director Award for Affleck. Once again, take that Academy -- the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences, that is...

British Academy Awards 2013: As in past years, strong Hollywood presence The British Academy of Film and Television Arts has announced the (mostly Hollywood-made and/or co-produced and/or distributed) BAFTA 2013 winners. For starters, as mentioned in the previous Alt Film Guide article, the Warner Bros. release Argo took home BAFTAs for Best Picture, Best Director (Ben Affleck), and Best Editor (William Goldenberg). (Pictured above: The Avengers star and British Academy Award presenter Tom Hiddleston on the red carpet.) American auteurs David O. Russell and Quentin Tarantino won the screenplay awards in, respectively, the adapted and original categories for two movies distributed by The Weinstein Company in North America: the comedy-drama Silver Linings Playbook and the violent, socially conscious period comedy-drama Django Unchained. In addition, Django earned Christoph Waltz his second British Academy Award -- Waltz's first win, also as Best Supporting Actor, was for another Tarantino effort, Inglourious Basterds...

The ceremony is over here in London, bringing together some of the finest and most talented people in the film industry under the same roof for one night. The BAFTAs are this country’s highest honour in film, and they have handed out their awards for the 66th time to those whom they deem the most deserving in the past year in film.
And since Ben Affleck is one of my favourite filmmakers of all time, I have been in a brilliant mood tonight, because he’s won (and very much earned) Best Director for Argo, and taken home the Best Film prize alongside his co-producers George Clooney and Grant Heslov. If you haven’t yet seen Argo, I can’t recommend enough how much you should see it as soon as possible.

The Guardian film team predict who will win what at this year's ceremony
On Friday Xan Brooks assessed the field of this year's Bafta contenders and found it "a hazy huddle of frontrunners, all seemingly bobbing back and forth in front of the finish line".
Lincoln is first among equals with 10 nominations. Les Misérables, Life of Pi, Skyfall and Argo all crowd in behind.
The awards momentum has swung from Life of Pi to Lincoln to Argo over the past few weeks. In a competition this close there could be upsets. There should be tears. There must be winners.
So here's what we think will take home scary award masks this year. We've listed all the nominees. Our predicted winners are in bold.

Eve Stewart is up for a Bafta and an Oscar for Les Misérables. The designer talks to Hannah Booth about rubber rosary beads – and why she's haunted by a mistake in The King's Speech
The art deco lobby of Freemasons' Hall in London is, before my eyes, being transformed into an olden-day version of Madrid railway station. A carpenter is hanging up a panel that reads: "Señoras | Caballeros". Elsewhere, hand-painted and artfully aged, a sign saying "Objetos Perdidos" is being mounted above a lost property desk, on which sit a period telephone and Spanish ticket stubs. If the Critics' Choice Movie Awards 2013 really are a sign of what we have to expect at the 85th Academy Awards, then the Oscar winners are going to be split between every deserving film and performance to be nominated this year. While "Silver Linings Playbook" won the most awards with Best Comedy Movie, Best Actor and Actress in a Comedy and Best Ensemble, all other major awards were split between "Argo," "Lincoln" and "Zero Dark Thirty."
Of course, there's no good way to judge who will win Best Director as the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences didn't nominate CCAs winner Ben Affleck for the award. It should help that the film also took home Best Picture, which bodes well for its Oscar chances. It's still a toss-up to see who will take home which awards on Feb. 24, but for now things are looking good for "Silver Linings Playbook" and "Argo,...

"Argo" F...yourself! Ben Affleck's "Argo" was the big winner at the 18th Annual Critics' Choice Movie Awards. The film won Best Picture with Affleck, infamously snubbed by the Academy, took home the Best Director award. I say...Yay!
Voted by the Broadcast Film Critics Association, of which I'm a proud member, the Critics' Choice Movie Awards have been regarded as a better Oscar predictor than the Golden Globes. Heck, we even give talented directors their well-deserved praise! Ha!

I've enjoyed watching the Academy Awards for as long as I can remember. Even though I don't always agree with their decisions, it's still a fun experience for me. This year Emma Stone and Seth MacFarlane woke up at the buttcrack of dawn to give us the nominations for the 85th Academy Awards, I however didn't wake up to watch because I was just too damn tired.
There's a lot of great movies that were nominated this year and Lincoln leads the pack with 12 nominations which isn't surprising at all. Seth MacFarlane and Emma Stone took the stage at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills this morning to announce this year's Academy Award nominations, and they played out almost exactly as everyone expected. Steven Spielberg's Lincoln led the way with 12 nominations including Best Picture, Best Director and another Best Actor nod for Daniel Day-Lewis. Ang Lee's Life of Pi was up for 11 awards, while David O. Russell's Silver Linings Playbook and Tom Hooper's Les Miserables received 8 nominations apiece. There were a total of 9 Best Picture nominees this year, and if there were any surprises they would probably be Beasts of the Southern Wild and Amour. Django Unchained was also in the mix, although Quentin Tarantino was ignored for Best Director. On the bright side, Joaquin Phoenix, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Amy Adams were all recognized for their performances in The Master, although the movie itself received no love.

Seth MacFarlane and Emma Stone announced the 85th Academy Awards nominations this morning, and absolutely no one should be surprised that a movie directed by Steven Spielberg, starring Daniel Day-Lewis and based on the life of one of the most universally admired people on the planet garnered the most nods. Lincoln garnered 12 nominations, including Best Picture, directing, acting and supporting actors (Sally Field and Tommy Lee Jones) — really they owe it all to the beard, don’t they? Life of Pi, Silver Linings Playbook and Django Unchained followed in the nod count. We’ll get to the surprising snubs in a minute, but first, take a look at the full nominations list and marvel along with Emma that every single one of the supporting actor nominees has won an award before:

After what feels like the longest wait in Oscar history, this year’s nominations for the 85th Academy Awards have finally been unveiled! Seth MacFarlane, creator of Family Guy and Ted, was joined by actress Emma Stone, star of Superbad and The Amazing Spider-Man, who let rip with the nominations at 5:30am at the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theatre in Beverly Hills.
Throughout Oscar history, the nominations have always been announced by members of the Academy themselves, which makes MacFarlane’s appearance here something special. It was announced earlier last year that MacFarlane would host the 85th Academy Awards.
Arguably the biggest disappointment to have emerged from this year’s nominations is the Best Picture snubbing of Skyfall, the latest entry in the James Bond franchise, a film which was considered to have been a serious contender. If Skyfall were to have been nominated for Best Picture, it would...
