Joel Edgerton on Acting Opposite a Troupe of Tween Boys in Cannes Thriller ‘The Plague’
Image
“I have two almost 4-year-olds, and I’m quite powerful and influential in certain circles, but not with two 4-year-olds,” says Joel Edgerton. “Kids run their own country, in a way.”

Edgerton’s been thinking a lot lately about those nascent years before entering adulthood thanks to his latest project, The Plague, which looks at the complicated and occasionally terrifying social dynamics of kids — specifically adolescent boys.

The feature debut of director Charlie Polinger, the film is set in the world of a competitive water polo summer camp, focusing primarily on the dynamic within a group of 12- and 13-year-old boys who have ostracized one camper because he has “the plague,” a nasty-looking case of eczema. One camper, Ben (Everett Blunck), struggles between his desire to help the outcast camper and his worry about incurring the wrath of the larger group. In the film, Edgerton plays the well-meaning if ineffective water polo coach.

Baz Luhrmann Making Young Joan Of Arc Movie, ‘Jehanne d’Arc,’ On Hunt For Young Actress
Image
We’ve been curious what Aussie director Baz Luhrmann would attempt next after the Oscar-nominated “Elvis” biopic that saw rising talent Austin Butler nab his first Best Actor nod for playing the iconic rocknroller. Back in September, it was revealed the filmmaker would attempt a new biographical film, “Jehanne d’Arc.”

There is now a substantial update as Deadline reveals that the film has landed help on the script with playwright Ava Pickett co-writing alongside Luhrmann, and a search to find an actress to play Joan is going to be the next big hurdle for the project.

Like The Movie Subject, Baz Luhrmann’s ‘Jehanne d’Arc’ Propelled By Youthful Energy Via Co-Scribe Ava Pickett; Search Is On For Tragic Teen Joan
Image
Exclusive: While he hasn’t yet found the actress who’ll play Joan of Arc in his epic Jehanne d’Arc, Baz Luhrmann found an exceptional young voice to help him unlock the screenplay. That would be Ava Pickett, a playwright who wrote the script with Luhrmann.

Here’s how impressed the filmmaker was with Pickett: Recently, pretty much the whole of Warner Bros shut down as the entire teams from production to marketing and publicity headed over to Chateau Marmont. In the room where the first draft of Rebel Without a Cause was read aloud for Warner Bros brass, Pickett read the first draft of Jehanne d’Arc. Luhrmann and design partner Catherine Martin backed her up with a visual presentation.

Start date for the film isn’t quite there, Luhrmann told Deadline. That depends on the casting of the pivotal role of the teenaged French peasant who believed...

Austin Butler & Jeremy Allen White Lead New A24 Crime Thriller 'Enemies'
Image
One of the most anticipated rumored movies has finally been made official by A24. Enemies, a new crime saga by Henry Dunham (The Standoff at Sparrow Creek), will be led by two of the most popular young actors working today. The Bear's Jeremy Allen White and The Bikeriders star Austin Butler will lead the new crime thriller. The pair's partnership in the project had long been rumored on social media, and A24 has finally put the speculation to rest with a positive update.

Deadline confirmed the casting in a new report. Enemies is set to begin production this summer in Chicago on a relatively limited budget of $25 million. Dunham is writing and directing the film, with A24 regular Ari Aster (Midsommar and Hereditary) producing. Plot details about the movie remain scarce, but the report confirmed that the film will follow a "relentless detective" and an "infamous contract killer," most...

‘Leave One Day’ Review: Slight Musical Is the Most Forgettable Thing About Cannes Film Festival’s Opening Night
Image
“Leave One Day,” Amélie Bonnin’s feature film that opened the Cannes Film Festival on Tuesday evening, is an unusual film for a Cannes opener in several ways.

It’s a musical, only the third to open Cannes in this century, after Leos Carax’s twisted “Annette” in 2021 and Baz Luhrmann’s lavish “Moulin Rouge!” in 2001. It’s directed by a woman, Bonnin, again only the third time that’s happened in the 2000s, after Maïwenn in 2023 and Emmanuelle Bercot in 2015. And it’s a first-time feature from a female director; the last time Cannes opened with one of those was, well, never.

In one major way, though, “Leave One Day” is quite similar to other recent Cannes openers, in that it’s likely to be largely forgotten a few days into the festival, quickly overshadowed by other films. A slight character study that strains to be charming but only occasionally gets there,...

‘The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping’ Adds Kelvin Harrison Jr. to Cast
Image
Kelvin Harrison Jr., who voiced Taka, aka Scar, in Disney’s Mufasa: The Lion King, has joined the ever-growing cast of Lionsgate’s latest installment of the Hunger Games franchise, the adaptation of the latest Suzanne Collins best-seller, Sunrise of the Reaping.

Glenn Close is also said to be circling a role in the feature, although sources say it’s unclear whether a deal can be struck on that front.

Reaping stars Joseph Zada as Haymitch Abernathy, with Whitney Peak playing Haymitch’s girlfriend, Lenore Dove Baird. The prequel story is focused on fan-favorite Haymitch, who in the original Hunger Games book trilogy (and movie quadrology) acted as a mentor to heroine Katniss Everdeen. (Woody Harrelson played Haymitch in the original Hunger Games films.)

Mckenna Grace and Jesse Plemons are also on the roll call of the production that has Francis Lawrence in the director’s chair.

Harrison has been cast as Beetee,...

‘Juliet & Romeo’ Review: Tryhard Attempt to Make Shakespeare ‘Cool’ Achieves the Opposite
Image
Let’s get something straight: Making William Shakespeare’s plays “cool” is kind of the opposite of cool. The only thing older than trying to make Shakespeare’s plays “hip” is Shakespeare’s actual plays, which were plenty hip to begin with. Hollywood has been trying to hip up those bad boys for a hundred years. You’ll find John Gilbert and Norma Shearer making fun of studio execs trying to fix The Bard way back in “The Hollywood Revue of 1929,” as they squawked wacky lines like “Julie baby, I’m ga-ga about you” and “You’re just about the cookies for me, boyfriend.”

Generally speaking it’s the updated versions of “Romeo & Juliet” that age badly, but these versions can still have value. “West Side Story” remains the best side story. Baz Luhrmann’s “Romeo + Juliet” is the ninetiesest nineties movie that ever tied nines in...

Sing Sing director Greg Kwedar’s next film is the comedy musical, Possum Song
Greg Kwedar
Writer-director Greg Kwedar is going from prison drama to fantastical critters with the musical comedy, Possum Song.

Movie titles can often be disappointing. Between The Temples turned out not to be a Jason Statham-esque revenge thriller. The Outrun, we soon learned, had nothing to do with racing Ferraris across 1980s America (though Michael Bay may soon fix that). Anthrapoid emphatically was not a giant monster movie.

What a relief, then, to learn that the forthcoming musical comedy Possum Song isn’t just a cute title. Its plot, the work of screenwriter Isaac Adamson, really does feature a possum – one with supernatural powers.

It’s to be the next film from writer-director Greg Kwedar, who most recently made the Oscar-nominated prison drama Sing Sing. Featuring some wonderful performances, not least from its lead, Colman Domingo, it was one of our favourite movies of 2023 – and a favourite with awards bodies, too.

“All I thought about was Elvis…”: Austin Butler’s Brutal Confession on How He Prepared for ‘Masters of the Air’ Makes Me Want to Watch It Again
Image
Created by John Shiban and John Orloff, Apple TV+’s war drama miniseries Masters of the Air, starring Austin Butler, Callum Turner, and Anthony Boyle, received positive to mixed reviews from critics and audiences upon release. Based on Donald L. Miller’s book of the same name, the story follows the actions of the 100th Bomb Group during WWII.

Critics at the time shared that Masters of the Air is ‘an absolutely fantastic television’ that goes on to depict the experience of pilots during World War II. Even though it received a positive to mixed response, audiences were concerned about the accuracy of the story and noted that the story had omitted a lot of parts from the actual story of the 100th. However, it’s Austin Butler’s experience that can change anyone’s mind about whether to re-watch the show or not.

Bella Ramsey Reportedly Interested in Portraying Joan of Arc in Baz Luhrmann’s Upcoming Film
Image
Baz Luhrmann has chosen his next movie. He will direct a film called Jehanne d’Arc for Warner Bros. The movie will tell the story of Joan of Arc, a brave teenage girl who became a hero in France. She helped lead the French army to a big win in 1429. Just two years later, in 1431, she was burned at the stake.

While the casting call was originally expected to go out in September of last year, there have been few updates since then about the film or who might take on the lead role.

However, notable industry insider Daniel Richtman recently shared on his Patreon that The Last of Us star Bella Ramsey is interested in portraying Joan of Arc.

It’s important to note that this information has not been confirmed by official sources and remains a rumor at this stage.

Bella Ramsey is certainly on a winning streak.

Stars: Timothée Chalamet, Edward Norton, Elle Fanning, Monica Barbaro, Joe Tippett, Eriko Hatsune, Scoot McNairy | Written by James Mangold, Jay Cocks, Elijah Wald | Directed by James Mangold

The biopic has been a genre around since the early days of filmmaking, and over the course of more than 100 years, it has changed drastically with every passing decade. In the early 2000s the genre, in particular the musical biopic, hit somewhat of a snag. It got caught up in formulaic storytelling and became a parody of itself. So much so that the 2007 film Walk Hard made fun of the formula so much it ruined the genre forever. However, some films still missed the joke and went ahead and followed the formula anyway, such as 2018’s Bohemian Rhapsody. The formula itself reduced the artist’s life to their Wikipedia page. Often opening with the film’s subject ready to take the stage of one of their famous performances,...

5 Movies from Tom Hanks That He Most Probably Wants You to Forget
Image
There are only a handful of actors who have achieved the level of stardom and critical acclaim as Tom Hanks. Over four decades in Hollywood, he’s worked with a roster of renowned directors like Wes Anderson, Robert Zemeckis, Steven Spielberg, and Baz Luhrmann, building a filmography rich in variety and range. Known for beloved classics such as Forrest Gump, Saving Private Ryan, and Toy Story, Hanks’ body of work has left a profound impact on audiences worldwide.

However, even for an icon like Hanks, not every film has been a hit. Alongside his masterpieces are a few titles he might prefer to leave forgotten. Whether due to lackluster performances, disappointing box office numbers, or poor critical reception, these movies simply didn’t live up to the Hanks standard.

From early missteps to recent experiments gone wrong, here are five Tom Hanks movies that didn’t quite make the grade.

Fans Will Never Forgive The Last of Us Creators For Not Casting Cailee Spaeny Who Looks Like the Real Life Ellie
Image
The Last of Us nailed the tone, the tension, and the emotional trauma, but when it came to casting Ellie, fans are still a little salty. Why? Cailee Spaeny, folks. With her striking resemblance to Ellie, she felt like the real-life version just waiting to happen. Sure, Bella Ramsey brought the grit that was needed, but some fans can’t shake the what-if.

Now, every side-by-side comparison feels like salt in the wound. It’s one of those casting choices that might forever live in fandom infamy right next to the words, “should’ve been her.”

When Leonardo DiCaprio Revealed How Romeo + Juliet Left Him In Shambles: “I Had So Much Emotional Stuff To Do”
Image
How Did Romeo + Juliet Affect Leonardo DiCaprio? (Photo Credit –Prime Video)

Back in 1996, Leonardo DiCaprio was wrecked. Not just once or twice, but nearly every time the director called “action” on Romeo + Juliet. At just 21, the rising star dove deep into the emotional whirlpool of Shakespeare’s most tragic lover, leaving him in literal shambles.

DiCaprio admitted he had to build a ritual just to survive the shoot. “I had so much emotional stuff to do in this movie, more than any other film I’d done. I mean, usually there’s some scenes where you’re sort of wrecked and crying, but here, in almost every other scene I was in a shambles” (via Cheat Sheet). The solution? Self-inflicted heartbreak.

He said Baz Luhrmann understood his process: letting him step away before scenes to spiral into darker places mentally. Leonardo DiCaprio would sit alone, try to tap into disturbing thoughts,...

The Ugly Stepsister Review — Gory Delight or Disappointing Mess?
Image
Terrifier 2. Julia Ducornau’s Raw. Emilie Blichfeldt’s The Ugly Stepsister. What do these films have in common? They will go down in history as the movies so gruesome that they caused audiences to vomit during their theatrical screenings. After making an audience member at its Sundance Film Festival premiere throw up, The Ugly Stepsister is making its way to US theaters, and while it’s satisfyingly gnarly, the narrative does leave something to be desired.

The Ugly Stepsister Review

Offering a dark twist on the story of Cinderella, The Ugly Stepsister follows a young woman as she goes to extreme measures to earn the attention of the handsome prince. It’s a story that has been told on screen dozens if not hundreds of times, although the extreme nature of Blinchfeldt’s approach ensures that it doesn’t feel entirely generic.

However, The Ugly Stepsister is hardly the...

When Leonardo DiCaprio Saved Romeo + Juliet From A Rollerblade Disaster: “I Quickly Said No”
Image
Here’s How Leonardo DiCaprio’s Bold Move About Rollerblades Saved Romeo + Juliet! (Photo Credit – Prime Video)

Before Romeo + Juliet became the wild, modern-day Shakespeare remix we still talk about, it nearly spun off in a totally different direction – on rollerblades. Yep, that almost happened. And 21-year-old Leonardo DiCaprio was the one who shut it down before it could crash the whole vibe.

In the mid-90s, Baz Luhrmann had a vision: Shakespeare with a twist. Think guns instead of swords, sleek cars, heavy religious symbolism, and chaotic party scenes. But somewhere in that brainstorm, rollerblades got tossed in. But DiCaprio wasn’t having it.

“At the beginning when we were just starting out, he wanted to make a lot of the characters go around on rollerblades and I quickly said no,” DiCaprio recalled years later (via Cheat Sheet). That call changed everything. Romeo + Juliet might have...

Gia Coppola at an event for Palo Alto (2013)
Gia Coppola’s drama starring Pamela Anderson peers behind the glamour of ‘the fun capital of the world’, but sin city has long seduced film-makers from Scorsese and Soderbergh to Sean Baker and Baz Luhrmann

(There’s a reason why film-makers are routinely drawn to the glaring, garish lights of Las Vegas: in its spangliest strips, it feels more movie set than city, the kind of place it’s hard to imagine people living everyday lives 24/7. Gia Coppola’s The Last Showgirl – streaming on Mubi from 18 April – is quite rare in its focus on one such person: Shelly, a dancer in a long-running revue on the Vegas strip, now pushing 60 and at a crossroads when said revue announces its imminent closure. Short and light on plot, it’s a character study built on a poignant night-and-day contrast, as Shelly literally performs a glitzy Vegas dream that all looks a bit...

‘The Great Gatsby’ turns 100: How Leonardo DiCaprio’s toast became a meme for the ages
Image
The moment comes 38 seconds into the trailer. As a lavish party explodes around him, Leonardo DiCaprio’s perfectly coiffed, cocksure Jay Gatsby raises a glass of bubbly to toast his glorious self — launching a meme that is still going strong more than a decade after the Baz Luhrmann epic played its last movie house.

April 10 marks the 100th anniversary of the publication of F. Scott’s Fitzgerald’s seminal novel of excess and identity set against the Jazz Age — and while the book remains an English class staple, contemporary audiences are undoubtedly more familiar with the DiCaprio meme than the actual novel… or even the film that spawned it. Here’s a brief look at how a few seconds of screen time became a viral sensation.

DiCaprio’s immortal toast first entered the public consciousness on Dec. 20, 2012, when the second trailer for Luhrmann’s Gatsby dropped. The Warner Bros. film,...

Darren Aronofsky: ‘I Hate Method Actors’
Image
Darren Aronofsky is sharing a cut and dry take on the Method acting debate: He simply “hates” the practice.

“I hate Method actors,” the auteur said during a French Cinematheque masterclass in Paris, from Variety. “[By all means], do a tremendous amount of research and really work hard, but acting’s make believe. If you’re going to do an intense scene, [there’s nothing wrong with] keeping yourself isolated, focused and ready in between takes to maintain that emotion. It’s a sport, a game — only, to be a great basketball player, you don’t have to be dribbling all the time. That’s not how it works. You do your homework, and get yourself ready. It’s only a fake reality between action and cut.”

He added that the particular acting technique is “just something to hide behind, as opposed to doing the work and being professional.” However, the director did clarify that an all-immersive approach could be “fine,...

“Leo’s like his love guru”: Austin Butler’s Romance With Zoë Kravitz Is Destined to Fail if the Leonardo DiCaprio Rumors Are True
Image
Zoë Kravitz’s fans were devastated after hearing about her breakup with heartthrob Channing Tatum, but it seems like they will be more upset after they discover one thing about her new romance with Austin Butler.

While the actress is rumored to be secretly dating the young stud after they have grown closer on the set of Caught Stealing, another update about Butler may pose a danger to their alleged relationship. It seems like veteran star Leonardo DiCaprio is involved, but not in the way you expect.

Zoë Kravitz in The Batman / Credits: Warner Bros. Pictures Austin Butler reportedly wants to follow his idol Leonardo DiCaprio when it comes to dating

Zoë Kravitz and Channing Tatum have called off their engagement after three years of dating due to differences in priorities. Austin Butler, on the other hand, broke up with model Kaia Gerber after it was reported that her family...

When Sarah Michelle Gellar Nearly Landed The Role Of A Lifetime Opposite Leonardo DiCaprio In This Classic Movie
Image
Why Did Sarah Michelle Geller Mis Out On An Iconic Role Opposite Leonardo DiCaprio? ( Photo Credit – Instagram )

Before Titanic turned Leonardo DiCaprio into a global obsession, he nearly shared the screen with another ‘90s icon-in-the-making: Sarah Michelle Gellar. Yep, Buffy herself almost scored the part of Juliet in Baz Luhrmann’s wild, modern take on Romeo + Juliet. But as fate would have it, one glance sealed the deal for someone else.

Back in 1996, Gellar was still hustling for a film breakthrough. She’d already snagged a Daytime Emmy for her role as Kendall Hart on All My Children, but most of her credits lived on the small screen. Her big screen resume? Pretty slim. A minor role in High Stakes from 1989 and a few near misses, including Clueless.

But Romeo + Juliet? That was the one that stung. She auditioned for Juliet Capulet alongside a loaded list of future stars.

Nicole Kidman Felt Embarrassed By Her Performance In A Historical Epic
Image
It's almost impossible for an actor to be proud of every single thing they've ever made, even when they're the caliber of Academy Award-winner Nicole Kidman. Over the years, the Australian performer has starred in all kinds of films, from Baz Luhrmann's romantic and tragic musical "Moulin Rouge!" to Alejandro Amenábar's truly terrifying ghost story "The Others, but one in particular apparently gives her pause in retrospect.

In an interview with the Australian radio station 2dayFM (via The Daily Mail), Kidman revealed that she was embarrassed when she saw her performance in Luhrmann's 2008 historical epic "Australia." The movie received middling-to-poor reviews from critics and wasn't especially loved by audiences either, and Kidman's starring role as British aristocrat Lady Sarah Ashley, who moves to Australia after she inherits the cattle ranch Faraway Downs, doesn't really help matters. Her performance isn't the worst thing about the movie, of course, as...

Why The Simpsons Fired Its Lead Composer Of 27 Seasons
Image
Starting in 1990 and continuing until 2017, Alf Clausen composed the score for the hit animated sitcom "The Simpsons." A lot of the incidental music on the show was extrapolated from the theme song composed by Danny Elfman, but Clausen also had to write the many songs that appeared on the series, forcing him to work in pretty much every genre. Clausen also composed music for TV shows like "The Critic," "Alf," and "Moonlighting." A veteran of the industry, his compositions have been compiled on several "Simpsons" song and music albums.

Clausen worked on "The Simpsons" for 27 years before being abruptly fired by the show's higher-ups in 2017. He was replaced by a music firm called Bleeding Fingers Music, a collective co-founded by Hans Zimmer (who composed the 2007 box office hit that was "The Simpsons Movie") and one that employs a whole team of talented music writers. Clausen was incensed by his firing,...

A Royal Rebel Wilson Demands Your Attention in New 'Juliet & Romeo' Images [Exclusive]
Image
Rebel Wilson has sung, danced, and made viewers laugh through films like Bridesmaids and Pitch Perfect, and now, she's royally dressed to kill. Collider can share an exclusive first look at the multi-talented actress in Juliet & Romeo, a new take on the classic Shakespeare romance that gives it a musical update like never before with a revamped pop soundtrack. The award-winning Wilson plays Lady Capulet, who appears confident and stunning in a flowing red dress complete with a golden headpiece that helps her stand out even in a sophisticated ballroom. Along with the other image, it's a showcase of the glamorous costumes and settings within writer-director Timothy Scott Bogart’s vision of Verona.

Rather than adapting the story of Romeo & Juliet as told by Shakespeare, Juliet & Romeo is directly based on the 1301 story that inspired the legendary tragedy. It's meant to kick off a trilogy of musical...

‘We Just Made It Up!’: Robert Randolph Announces Wild-Style Solo Album
Image
Talking with Rolling Stone last year, Robert Randolph recalled the unusual complaint he received when he was working on a new album in LA. Apparently, the bass amplifier he and producer Shooter Jennings had placed in a hallway was too loud, and a couple of people in the building — T Bone Burnett and Robbie Robertson — told a receptionist it was too loud. As Randolph said, Robertson walked into the studio and said, “Oh, that’s you down here? You guys are getting funky in here.”

Robertson, who passed away last year,...

Lizzo Steps Into Rock History With Rosetta Tharpe Biopic
Image
We’ve got some exciting news out of Hollywood today, courtesy of Deadline. Lizzo, the four-time Grammy winner, is set to take on a major role in a new movie about the legendary Sister Rosetta Tharpe. This isn’t just any project—it’s a biopic called ‘Rosetta,’ and it’s being developed by Amazon MGM Studios. I can already feel the energy this pairing is going to bring to the screen.

Tharpe, often called the ‘Godmother of Rock and Roll,’ was a gospel singer who broke barriers in the 1930s and ’40s. She mixed her faith-filled music with a guitar style that shaped rock as we know it, influencing icons like Elvis Presley and Chuck Berry. The film plans to dive into a key chapter of her life, full of bold creativity and personal struggles. Picture this—she’s pushing musical limits, hiding a forbidden romance with another woman,...

10 Best Austin Butler Movies & TV Shows, Ranked
Image
One of Hollywood's most exciting talents working today, Austin Butler has been steadily building his portfolio since working as a background actor in 2005 on the Nickelodeon shows "Ned's Declassified School Survival Guide," "Unfabulous," and "Drake & Josh." Butler even appeared in an episode of "Hannah Montana" that also had Larry David. Progressing into guest and recurring roles on a variety of teenage sitcoms and dramas, the actor made an incredible turn-about going from teen idol to highly acclaimed leading man seemingly over night.

While working extensively in both film and television, Butler also received complimentary notices in the theater world, most notably as Don Parritt in "The Iceman Cometh," in a 2018 mounting of the play on Broadway with Denzel Washington. His work ethic during that play impressed the legendary actor so much Washington personally recommended Butler to Baz Luhrmann helping Butler, helping Butler land one of his most distinctive roles.

‘The Master and Margarita’ Heads to Court as Producers Block U.S. Release of Russian Blockbuster (Exclusive)
Image
“The Master and Margarita” filmmaker Michael Lockshin is locked in a legal battle over his blockbuster Russian-language adaptation of the celebrated Soviet novel, with the director accusing two producers of blocking his efforts to bring his movie to U.S. cinemas.

The lawsuit, which was filed by sales agent Luminosity Pictures and shared with Variety, alleges that producers Svetlana Migunova-Dali and Grace Loh, who are planning their own English-language adaptation of the book, cannot prove legitimate ownership of the rights to the novel.

The suit also contends that “The Master and Margarita” — which was first published in the 1960s — is in the public domain, “ensuring that neither this group nor anyone else can block the film’s release,” according to Lockshin.

With the director expecting a court date to be set in the coming weeks, producers Migunova-Dali and Loh are firing back, with their lawyer dismissing the case as a...

“Leo finally decided to make a movie without Scorsese”: One Battle After Another Teaser is So Good That I Think Leonardo DiCaprio is Getting His Next Oscar
Image
For an actor, who has worked with the likes of Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg, Quentin Tarantino, Clint Eastwood, and Baz Luhrmann, surprisingly, Leonardo DiCaprio never teamed up with PTA until recently. Amidst the revival of the long-delayed Devil in the White City, which will unite Scorsese and DiCaprio for the seventh time, the teaser for Paul Thomas Anderson’s first collaboration with the actor has heightened expectations.

While the film might have a hard time recouping its money, given its rumored $140M cost, one thing that is certain from the teaser is the film is going to be absolutely insane, hopefully in the best way possible.

'Bob Trevino Likes It' Review: You'll Enjoy It Too
Image
A real-life story of a young woman Facebook-stalking her father leads to a paternal friendship with an entirely different man in Bob Trevino Likes It. In fact, the other guy is a total stranger — who just happened to have the exact same name as the woman's actual dad. The new film is based on the inspiring true story of filmmaker Tracie Laymon, and the award-winning indie dramedy hits theaters March 21, 2025. The sensational Barbie Ferreira portrays her with utter grace, with the eponymous friendo who soon enters the heroine's life portrayed a charming (and always reliable) John Leguizamo.

We all know Leguizamo. It's hard to believe that the veteran Bronx native portrayed the tyrannical Tybalt almost 30 years ago in Baz Luhrmann's Romeo + Juliet. Leguizamo is much more likable in this latest fatherly role, to put it mildly. But if you didn't already know of Barbie Ferreira's work, this will be a pleasant surprise.

Hugh Jackman's 'Faraway Downs' Deserves Better From Western Fans
Image
Audiences and critics are divided on the merits of Baz Luhrmann's Faraway Downs, a six-part miniseries starring Hugh Jackman that expands the story told in the panned 2008 drama Australia. While general TV consumers enjoy the 2023 Hulu series, critics feel it's a bloated and unnecessary addendum to the underwhelming 2008 historical epic. Of course, critics aren't always right, and in the case of Faraway Downs, they missed the mark.

A deeply personal tale for Luhrmann, Faraway Downs effectively functions as a corrective director's cut, allowing the venerated Australian visionary to tell the story as he sees fit. The qualitative results are more in line with the audience's reception than the critics' cynical dismissal, putting Australia on par with the hit series Yellowstone and, even better, akin to what Quentin Tarantino did with The Hateful Eight. Critics need to check the pulse of what appeals to non-critics and reassess Faraway Downs at once.

Leonardo DiCaprio’s Close Friend Didn’t Enjoy His ‘The Great Gatsby’ Audition: “They probably just did it as a favor to Leo”
Image
Navigating the tricky terrain of friendship and ambition can sometimes lead to unexpected results in pursuing success. Take, for instance, Jay R. Ferguson, an actor known for his role in The Conners and a close friend of The Great Gatsby actor Leonardo DiCaprio.

When he auditioned for the 2013 adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s timeless classic, Ferguson found himself in a surprisingly awkward position.

Ferguson recounted feeling “uncomfortable” during The Great Gatsby audition as the weight of his friendship with DiCaprio loomed. He believed the audition was being passed down to him just because he was a close friend of the lead actor, Leonardo DiCaprio, who played Jay Gatsby in the movie.

SXSW Review: The True Beauty of Being Bitten by a Tick is a Fascinating DIY Bergman-Esque Experiment
Image
Falling somewhere between a horror film and dark comedy about wellness crazes, The True Beauty of Being Bitten by a Tick is, like director Pete Ohs’ previous Jethica, a film that suggests watching a play within a movie. Both features are difficult to discuss without spoilers––they seem to operate on a wavelength beyond genre boxes.

It might help to know the creative process going in. Tick was made collaboratively by its main cast: as Ohs explained during the SXSW premiere, they isolated on location at a country home where they would write three scenes at a time, film and analyze said scenes, and then move forward. The result is a kind of mumblecore version of an Ingmar Bergman film that feels both loose and heavily controlled. But if you’re not on the film’s wavelength it may feel like a disjointed mess. Like the wellness cures offered by...

The True Beauty of Being Bitten by a Tick Review: A Quirky Retreat Full of Grief, Ticks, and an Oddball Cast of Characters

Well, welcome to The True Beauty of Being Bitten by a Tick, a film that promises tranquility but delivers tension, weirdness, and a whole lot of strange vibes. Director Pete Ohs isn’t just playing with horror here—he’s toying with your mind, nudging you into a world where nothing feels quite right. Like a bad trip to a wellness retreat, it leaves you questioning everything.

'The True Beauty of Being Bitten by a Tick' Review: Strange Drama Tries to Get Under Your Skin
Image
Life is rough. It can often feel like we’re each living in our own little horror story, with the mounting pressures of the day-to-day and the exhaustion of the world around us. We try to find ways to alleviate these daily pains, but these anxieties frequently take the wheel of our lives. The True Beauty of Being Bitten by a Tick gets into that claustrophobic nature of life, the fear that we can’t shake, and the attempt to get to a place without those types of pressure. Director Pete Ohs (2022’s Jethica) even starts his latest film with a quote from Baz Luhrmann’s Strictly Ballroom: “A life lived in fear is a life half-lived.” That constant burden is a compelling feeling to center a film around, but The True Beauty of Being Bitten by a Tick loses both steam in this exploration and focuses more on the strange than this sentiment.
