Bubbling to the Surface: Léa Mysius To Give us a Night to Remember with “Histoires De La Nuit”
Image
A Cannes Film Festival regular with her Critics’ Week showcased Ava (in 2017) and Directors’ Fortnight selected The Five Devils (2022), Léa Mysius has found her third feature. The French filmmaker will adapt Laurent Mauvignier’s recent French thriller Histoires De La Nuit (The Birthday Party) – it sounds like a great read per The Guardian. The Screen Daily folks report that Les Films de Pierre’s Marie-Ange Luciani and F Comme Film’s Jean-Louis Livi will produce. No cast has been attached yet, but it looks like there’ll be a meaty part for a lead female. Shooting is planned for May 2024, which means they’ll likely submit this for the Palme d’Or comp in 2025/ It’s worth mentioning that Mysius has technically been included in the comp before as she helped write Claire Denis’ Stars At Noon, Arnaud Desplechin’s Ismael’s Ghosts, Oh Mercy!…

UK’s David Parfitt Unveils New Project With ‘The Father’ French Partner & Near-Future ‘Hamlet’; Makes Appeal To U.S. Agents
Image
Oscar and BAFTA-winning film producer David Parfitt is hoping to reunite with French producer Philippe Carcassonne following their successful collaboration on Florian Zeller’s Oscar-winning drama The Father.

Parfitt revealed his plans during a masterclass at the Doha Film Institute’s Qumra talent incubator event on Sunday.

“He [Carcassonne] is developing something really interesting based on an Israeli novel called Pain, which he commissioned as a French screenplay but they have decided they want to do it in England in English,” Parfitt clarified after the talk.

The 2019 novel by Zeruya Shalev revolves around a woman revisiting the double trauma of being caught up in a terror attack and abandonment by a lover when he comes back into her life a decade later.

Carcassonne’s partner, the actress and director Anne Fontaine, whose credits include Coco Before Chanel, is attached to direct the film, in what would be her first English-language production.

“It’s very interesting for everyone, and producers (from Mediawan) who now have access to Plan B’s teams are raving about the level of standards that a company like Plan B has, being an independent production company which has won the most Oscars with such quality projects,” Capton continued. “We have a lot to learn and I think it will benefit our French ecosystem,” he added.

2021 Oscar winners list in all 23 categories
Image
The 93rd Annual Academy Awards were presented on Sunday night, April 25. So who won in this most unusual year? Scroll down for the complete Oscar winners list in all 23 categories, updated live throughout the night.

These Oscars had originally been scheduled for February 28, but then the Covid-19 pandemic upended the entire entertainment industry. Movie productions were put on hold. Movie releases were delayed. And award shows across various entertainment industry switched to virtual or hybrid formats with limited or no in-person audiences in attendance.

SEEWhere to watch all the 2021 Oscar nominees

In addition to moving the airdate, the academy also expanded the eligibility rules. Instead of considering movies just from the 2020 calendar year, these awards considered films that opened through February 28, 2021. And they also opened the door to streaming movies without the need for a theatrical release.

The resulting Oscar nominations were led by a Netflix film, the Hollywood biopic “Mank,...

Oscars 2021: The Complete Winners List
Image
Sunday night’s Oscar ceremony was historic in more ways than one, making the 441-day wait for the 93rd Academy Awards well worth it.

“The Father” star Anthony Hopkins nabbed actor, Frances McDormand (“Nomadland”) took home the actress prize, Daniel Kaluuya (“Judas and the Black Messiah”) won for supporting actor and “Minari’s” Yuh-Jung Youn claimed supporting actress, becoming the first Korean actor to do so. Nine actors of color earned Academy Award nominations — an Oscar record for diversity in those categories — but only two won. Additionally, more women were nominated in 2021 than in any previous year.

“Nomadland’s” Chloé Zhao made history as well, becoming the second woman and the first woman of color to win an Oscar for directing. The film also won best picture.

Unlike other awards shows during the Covid-19 pandemic, Hollywood’s biggest night was held in person, and televised live on ABC from the...

Oscars: Pete Hammond’s Absolutely Final Predictions For The 93rd Annual Academy Awards
Image
It’s been a year like no other. Actually, make that two years like no other, since eligibility in the unusual 14-month Oscar calendar was extended by two months until February 28, 2021. This will be the first Academy Awards since the sixth edition, listed as 1932-33, that will have included one year and part of the other, and this year’s awards will technically be categorized as 2020-21. While many theaters remained closed, streamers like Netflix and Amazon became more prominent than ever — a sea change that even the cinema-centric Academy had to acknowledge by making films automatically eligible even if they first debuted on a streamer, at least for this year.

Still, as the nominations showed, and my predictions will support, the traditional studios, whether alone or with the help of their specialty divisions, still look to triumph once the history of this weird season finally is written. An earlier...

Frances McDormand in Nomadland (2020)
The 2021 BAFTA Winners & Interviews from the Red Carpet
Frances McDormand in Nomadland (2020)
It’s been a strange year, but cinema endures. The 2021 British Academy Film and Television Awards took place at the Royal Albert Hall on the 11th of April, 2021. In a first in BAFTA history, four women have been nominated in the Director category, including Nomadland director Chloe Zhao, Sarah Gavron for Rocks, and Shannon Murphy for Babyteeth. Other notable nominees include Promising Young Woman, The Trial of the Chicago 7, The Father, Saint Maud and Minari. It is a diverse line up, and a very unusual time but the red carpets are rolling out, even if they are in living rooms around the world.

Yesterday director Ang Lee was entered into the BAFTA Fellowship, and Noel Clarke was awarded the Outstanding British Contribution to cinema. This evening Edith Bowman and Dermot O’Leary hosted the awards and it was a delight to see Yun-Jung Youn’s incredible win for her role in Minari.

‘Nomadland’ and ‘Promising Young Woman’ Have All the Goods With the Oscar Nominations
Image
The Oscars have unveiled the 2021 nominations, and it was a historic group that closes the chapter of one of the hardest years for cinema.

After a year in which the Academy announced its divisive inclusion and representation standards, members stepped up to the plate, recognizing the most people of color in the acting categories in history with nine nods. There’s wonderful representation in almost every category, and while there’s still work to do, this is a step in the right direction and the Academy should be applauded for its efforts.

In a year dubbed “The Year of the Woman,” it’s poetic to see (in theory) that the only two films that can win best picture, based on Oscar statistical history, are “Nomadland” and “Promising Young Woman,” considering where they landed nominations.

Let’s look through the first initial thoughts on the nominees and predicted winners.

Oscar Nominations: ‘Mank’ Tops List With 10 Including Best Picture; Six Other Films With Six; Female Directors Record Set – The Complete List
Image
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences unveiled its nominations Monday morning for the 93rd Oscars, through Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Nick Jonas. AMPAS’s David Rubin started the pandemic-delayed Oscars by validating Deadline’s scoop that most of the event will be held in Union Station in downtown Los Angeles, with some of the event being held in the Dolby Theatre, its usual locale.

The nominations for the Oscars, which will hold its ceremony April 25 live on ABC, had its share of surprises, and the most noticeable thing is the diversity that is reflected in the Academy’s efforts over several years to broaden the perspective of its voting members. Coming off the recent scandalous showing by the scandal-mocked HFPA for not even having a single voting Black member, it seems a step in the right direction.

As a result, this marked the first year that two women...

Final Oscar Nomination Predictions: ‘Nomadland’ and Netflix Can Rule the Wild and Crazy Year (Column)
Image
If you’re reading this the day after our issue hits newsstands, the Oscar voting period is now closed. So where does it all stand?

The Golden Globes and Critics Choice Awards gave their top prize to Chloé Zhao’s “Nomadland,” which solidified its front-runner status. Jason Woliner’s “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm” received boosts from winning the Globes’ best picture comedy prize and nabbing a surprise Producers Guild of America nomination. Still, it’ll be tricky to see the film picking up the broad support needed to land a nom in the Academy’s top category. It does, however, help star Maria Bakalova, who has become a darling of this year’s quarantine campaign trail.

Netflix walks in with multiple options, but it’s unclear how many nods it will be able to actually secure. Aaron Sorkin’s “The Trial of the Chicago 7” is the best bet to challenge...

Shannon Murphy scores BAFTA nomination for ‘Babyteeth’
Image
Shannon Murphy has been nominated for the BAFTA Award for best direction for her debut feature, Babyteeth.

Murphy is in good company, with fellow nominees for the prize including Thomas Vinterberg for Another Round; Lee Issac Chung for Minari; Chloé Zhao for Nomadland; Jasmila Žbanić for Quo Vadis, Aida? and Sarah Gavron for Rocks.

It is the first time in BAFTA history that four women have been nominated in the director category.

These are the first edition of nominations to follow BAFTA’s seven-month diversity review, which came about after it faced significant backlash one year ago for a lack of diversity among nominees – including an all-male director category. Three of the nominated directors are also up for best film not in the English language.

The BAFTA nod is yet another accolade for Babyteeth and Murphy’s work, following on from the film’s premiere in competition at the Venice Film Festival in 2019. There,...

BAFTA Nominations 2021: ‘Nomadland’ & ‘Rocks’ Lead Highly Diverse Field
Image
Nomadland and Rocks lead the diverse list of BAFTA Film nominees for 2021. Scroll down for the nominations in full.

Chloé Zhao and Sarah Gavron’s films scored seven nominations each, including nods for the filmmakers in the best director category.

Nomadland was one of five nominations in the best film category alongside The Father, The Mauritanian, Promising Young Woman and The Trial Of The Chicago 7.

Four films scored six nominations: The Father, Mank, Minari and Promising Young Woman. The Dig and The Mauritanian garnered five nominations each.

The big takeaway this year is how diverse the nominations are. BAFTA faced a backlash one year ago for a lack of diversity among its nominees. ‘The Father’: Read The Screenplay For Florian Zeller’s Golden Globe-Nominated Dementia Drama
Image
Exclusive: In 2014, French playwright Florian Zeller won the Molière Award for Le Pere, a play about an aging man’s bout with dementia. Seven years, a TV series and a French film adaptation later, Zeller brings his words to the big screen and to the Oscar-season awards race.

Starring Anthony Hopkins and Olivia Colman, The Father centers on Anthony, a man in his 80s who begins succumbing to dementia, refusing all assistance from his daughter.

Back at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival, Zeller told Deadline that the inspiration for his play-turned-film was his grandmother, who raised him. “She was like my mother,” he said. “She started to suffer from dementia when I was 15, so I knew a bit what it was to go through this painful process.”

The first-time film director, who is up for the Golden Globes’ best screenplay award, teamed with longtime collaborator and Oscar-winning Dangerous Liaisons scribe Christopher Hampton for his film debut.

Anthony Hopkins Makes Strong Case for Second Oscar for ‘The Father’
Image
“I’m having an old friend for dinner”

-Hannibal Lecter, “The Silence of the Lambs”

Marlon Brando, Gary Cooper, Tom Hanks, Dustin Hoffman, Fredric March, Jack Nicholson, Sean Penn, Spencer Tracy. Besides being some of history’s finest performers, they are also the select few that have won two Academy Awards for best actor, with just Daniel Day-Lewis surpassing them as the only three-time winner. With what Anthony Hopkins delivers in “The Father” from first-time director Florian Zeller, he has the goods to join that elite list of two-time best actor winners.

Hopkins nabbed his first Oscar in 1991 as Hannibal Lecter in “The Silence of the Lambs,” a performance that beat out the more “traditional” Academy types like Warren Beatty (“Bugsy”) and Nick Nolte (“The Prince of Tides”), with only 16 minutes of screen time. The only other best actor winner to do it with less time in a movie was...

Olivia Colman at an event for The Oscars (2019)
‘The Father’ Trailer: Anthony Hopkins Suffers From Dementia in Florian Zeller Drama (Video)
Olivia Colman at an event for The Oscars (2019)
Anthony Hopkins’ character in “The Father” can be very charming…sometimes. At 80, he’s still spry and mischievous but is suffering from dementia and is placing a massive burden on his daughter, played by Olivia Colman.

That’s the crux of Florian Zeller’s drama “The Father,” which made its debut at Sundance and is playing at TIFF. Sony Pictures Classics acquired the film ahead of its premiere at Sundance and has now set a limited theatrical release date of December 18 for the film in Los Angeles and New York (assuming theaters are open by then), followed by a rollout in most major markets by Christmas Day.

But while the film has already been a hit with critics (the film has an 87 on Metacritic) and has generated awards buzz for Hopkins, this is the first look most audiences will have at the complicated grief caused by a person whose grip on reality is slowly unraveling.

Anne Fontaine at an event for In His Hands (2005)
Why is French Director Anne Fontaine Not Better Known?
Anne Fontaine at an event for In His Hands (2005)
Anne Fontaine’s new film, Night Shift, showing as a Special Gala at the Berlinale, is highly accomplished, well constructed, and suspenseful and shows Fontaine’s to be an especially strong director. Why it was shown as a Special Gala at the Berlinale rather than in Competition is an open question. But more in question is why is Fontane not more celebrated as one of France’s top directors?

Anne Fontaine has matured since I last wrote about her when I saw The Innocents, though that too was very original. During the Sundance Film Festival 2016, when I first met and interviewed her for The Innocents, I had not even heard of her.

At first glance, I saw she was elegant in that rich French way and on researching her I saw she was married to Philippe Carcassonne, one of France’s lead producers and the producer of this film along...

In “Night Shift,” Fontaine delved into the world of three French officers, Virginie, Erik and Aristide, who are assigned to drive a migrant (Payman Maadi) back to the border for unspecified reasons. ‘The Father’ Starring Anthony Hopkins and Olivia Colman Acquired by Sony Pictures Classics Ahead of Sundance
Sony Pictures Classics has acquired the rights to the U.S. and select international territories for “The Father,” which stars Anthony Hopkins and Olivia Colman and is set to premiere at the Sundance Film Festival later this month.

“The Father” is based on French writer Florian Zeller’s own adaptation of his acclaimed stage play. Zeller directed the film based on a screenplay he co-wrote with Osfar winner Christopher Hampton.

In the upcoming film adaptation, Hopkins and Colman star as father and daughter — one mischievous, the other caring — who battle the universal prophecy of loss that comes with age. “The Father” hums and bristles with compassion; celebrating an intimate, absorbing, comedic, and moving story about our own real-life human condition, according to Sony’s description. No release information has yet been set for the film.
