Biography

    • Damian Lewis was born on February 11, 1971, in St. John's Wood, London, England, to Charlotte Mary (Bowater), from an upper-class background, and J. Watcyn Lewis, a city broker whose own parents were Welsh. He was raised on Abbey Road in London until the age of 8 with his siblings Gareth, William, and Amanda. In 1979, he was sent to Ashdown House boarding school, then was educated at Eton College. At age 16, he formed his own theater company, then worked in South London, then traveled around Africa. From 1990 to 1993, he studied at Guildhall School of Music and Drama, alongside Daniel Craig and Joseph Fiennes. Among his teachers was RSC stalwart Colin McCormack. Lewis graduated in 1993, and worked on the stage, particularly with the Royal Shakespeare Company. There he was seen by director Steven Spielberg, who subsequently cast him as Richard Winters in the HBO/BBC miniseries Band of Brothers (2001), for which he was nominated for a Golden Globe, among other awards. Lewis continues his career in films, TV, and theater.

Trivia

  • His castmates in Band of Brothers (2001) were initially skeptical of how well he could handle playing an American. It turned out that he was so convincing (as an American) that some cast and crew didn't believe he was British.
  • Director Gareth Lewis is his younger brother. Gareth directed Damian in The Baker (2007).
  • Despite being an Englishman, Lewis often plays characters who are in the U.S. military, such as Major Richard D. Winters in Band of Brothers (2001), Marine Sergeant Nicholas Brody in Homeland (2011), and Major General James B. McPherson in To Appomattox (2015).
  • His maternal half-brother William Russell was made Lord Mayor of London on 9 November 2019 becoming the fifth member of the family to hold the office. Their maternal grandfather, Lt. Colonel Sir Ian Bowater served 69 - 70 and great-grandfather, Sir Frank Bowater served 38 -39.
  • Because of the popularity of his television series Homeland (2011) with the First Family, Damian and wife Helen McCrory were invited by President Barack Obama as official dinner guests at the White House.

Quotes

  • If one of your fantasies is lying on a bed in Hollywood, surrounded by eight naked women, then another is to have a beautiful wife and a nice rambling house in London with three kids running around... perhaps it's good to have a bit of tension in your fantasy life.
  • [on Hailee Steinfeld] I think she has a natural awareness of what she needs to do in front of the camera. She's got that freshness and that immediacy which is so exciting. You can see it in her eyes all through her performance as Juliet. There's a real light behind her eyes. That's going to stand her in good stead for film acting.
