Life on Mars will not have another sequel series after all. The creators of the UK series have announced that the planned spin-off, titled Lazarus, will not be happening, per Deadline.
The original Life on Mars series aired for two seasons on BBC One between 2006 and 2007. Starring John Simm, Philip Glenister, Liz White, Dean Andrews, and Marshall Lancaster, the sci-fi series follows a cop (Simm) from 2006 who finds himself thrown back in time to 1970s Manchester.
A spin-off series titled Ashes to Ashes, featuring Keeley Hawes as a police officer who is shot in 2008 and wakes up in 1981, ran for three seasons in the UK. ABC ran its own version of Life on Mars starring Jason O'Mara and Harvey Keitel. It was cancelled after one season but viewers still...

The Doctor's (Matt Smith) ganger screams in agony, prompting the real Doctor to tell him the Flesh has to cope with their past regenerations. Ganger Doctor asks if he wants a Jelly Baby. The Doctor wants more proof that he's really him and they talk with each other. Rory (Arthur Darvill) and Amy (Karen Gillan) may not trust them, but the two Doctors are on the same wavelength, "great minds" and all that. His plan is to save them all and ganger Doctor was thinking that too. "It's just so inspiring to hear me say it." Amy notices the different shoes one of them's wearing but can't tell them apart. Both the Doctors have "established a protocol." They both tell Amy to "breathe." Obviously for when she's having the baby. Doctor; "I'm starting to get a sense of just how impressive it is to hang out with me...Yowza." He...

A woman pushes one of her fellow workers into the acid tank where he burns and he later returns again, as his doppelganger. Rory (Arthur Darvill) plays darts with Amy (Karen Gillan) whilst the Doctor (Matt Smith) still attempts to get a fix on whether Amy is pregnant or not. He volunteers to drop them off for fish and chips, but Amy wants to be a part of whatever he's up to. So what was he up to on the sly, it couldn't really have been landing on that island as that was the result of the freak solar storm, or was it? A solar tsunami strands them on an island, housing a monastery. Doctor: "behold a cockerel, love a cockerel." Referring to the weather vane. Always have to have one of those around. Rory says it's not medieval as he can hear Dusty Springfield. Being the Doctor he can't resist nosing around.

This post will be chock-full of spoilers, and is meant as a discussion post, rather than a review. Suffice to say, if you like sci-fi, the metaphysical, and procedurals grounded in humanity, as well as brilliant characters and unbelievably strong actors, then give "Ashes to Ashes" a shot, but not before watching the original British series, "Life on Mars." It'll be infinitely frustrating at times, but it's worth the payoff.

I've mentioned a few times on the site how disappointed I was in the British series, "Life on Mars." It was a good procedural built with wonderful characters, with a particular nod to John Simm and, especially, Phillip Glenister, and I did like most of the episodes individually. But I thought the end was a complete cop-out. Essentially, the people behind the series created a complex mystery about why Sam Tyler was stuck in 1972 only, in the end, to give...

Former Ashes To Ashes star Marshall Lancaster has admitted that he was surprised by revelations in the show's final episode. The actor told FemaleFirst that he had no idea his character Chris Skelton was already dead. "It wasn't what I was expecting at all," he confessed. "We were all sat down at the beginning of the third series and we were told about how it all fits and what it was all about. We had all been used to the idea that it’s Alex Drake that’s in this coma but to find out that you are all in the same boat was quite funny, really. "I didn’t think that Alex Drake would wake up and it (more)...

BBC America was originally meant to air Season Two of genre-busting drama series Ashes to Ashes last May, following their run of the first season of the Life on Mars sequel series starring Keely Hawes, Philip Glenister, Dean Andrews, Marshall Lancaster, and Montserrat Lombard. Unfortunately, things didn't quite turn out that way. A year later, BBC America is finally bringing Season Two of Ashes to Ashes to American shores, with the first episode slated to air tonight at 10 pm Et/Pt. (It's also the perfect jumping-on point for viewers who may not have seen the first season.) Thanks to a region-free DVD player and a friend in the UK, I've been writing up episodes of Ashes's phenomenally mind-bending third season on a weekly basis over the last few weeks (the series is set to end its three-season run next week in the UK), but I wanted to resurrect my review...

Marshall Lancaster has revealed that he is glad Ashes To Ashes is ending after its third series. According to The Sun, the 34-year-old actor, who plays DC Chris Skelton in the BBC series, said that he wants to show to go out on a high rather than being "flogged to death". "These sorts of shows have only so much mileage and it will have gone as far as it can," he said. "I think we can stretch only one more series out of it. "Everything should draw to an (more)...

Chicago – Any good reader of HollywoodChicago.com knows that we have a soft spot for modern British television. “Torchwood,” “Doctor Who,” “Primeval,” “Robin Hood,” “Ashes to Ashes,” and many more shows range from good to great. One of the best series of the ’00s is the excellent “Life on Mars,” soon-to-be available in a series 1 DVD box set and accompanied on store shelves this month by the sixth volume of the thrilling “Wire in the Blood”.
DVD Rating: 5.0/5.0 The spectacular “Life on Mars” was adapted into an ill-fated ABC remake last fall and I worry that American audiences will ignore the original because they see the remake as a failure (which is itself debatable). Whether or not you liked or disliked the Yank version, please check out the BBC original, a great twist on the standard police procedural.
Life on Mars will be released on DVD on July 28th, 2009.

Coronation Street's Becky Granger appears to be settling into the life she's always wanted. She has a steady relationship, an (almost) perfect man in Steve McDonald (Simon Gregson) and a regular roof over her head. Despite ruining her first wedding by turning up to the register office three sheets to the wind, the brash barmaid - played by 29-year-old Katherine Kelly - now has her heart firmly set on becoming the fifth Mrs McDonald in a lavish August white wedding. However, the surprise reappearance of Slug (Marshall Lancaster) - an old face from Becky's less-than-sparkling past - could threaten her plans. Now a mobile phone salesman operating under what's believed to be his real name, Neil, Becky's old flame sauntered back into her life on Monday. Suited, booted and claiming to have turned over a new leaf, Slug's apparently squeaky (more)...

Ashes to Ashes actor Marshall Lancaster will make a comeback to Coronation Street at the end of June. The 34-year-old, who plays DC Chris Skelton in the BBC police drama, returns to filming with the Weatherfield soap in a few weeks' time as Becky Granger's (Katherine Kelly) wayward ex-boyfriend Slug. Talking of his return, he told Digital Spy: "I'm going back for a bit longer this time. The opportunity for him to come back was always there. "There were a couple of times they asked me back and I was filming Ashes at the time so I was disappointed that I couldn't do it and I didn't think they would hang on. But luckily it's worked out this time and they've written him back in so I'm really chuffed with that." Slug was last seen leaving Becky stranded on the Moors after stealing Roy (David Neilson) (more)...

Television Rating: 5.0/5.0 Chicago – “Ashes to Ashes” may be one of the most unusual choices for a TV sequel but sometimes the best series come from the most unexpected places. This may be the most pleasant surprise TV fans will get all year. The BBC’s brilliant “Life on Mars” has been dragged from the glitz and glamour of the ’70s to the turbulent ’80s in the as-good-and-arguably-better “Ashes to Ashes,” another notch in the belt of great BBC programming.
