Walter Mirisch’s slam-bang, eardrum-pounding Sensurround stock footage orgy for the Centennial Year gathers an impressive lineup of big stars to celebrate the U.S. Navy’s biggest aircraft carrier battle: Charlton Heston, Henry Fonda, James Coburn, Glenn Ford, Hal Holbrook, Toshiro Mifune. Director Jack Smight manages the talky, exposition-laden account of a sprawling, complicated battle rather well, at least in terms of clarity. What is unwatchable pan-scanned on TV isn’t half bad for fans of big-scale war movies. Pi gives us an approximation of Sensurround (I think), and also John Ford’s short subject The Battle of Midway from 1942.

Exclusive: Dues payable by SAG-AFTRA’s high-earning members will be going up over the next two years, per a resolution passed at the union’s recently-concluded 5th biennial convention. The dues hike will be achieved by increasing the maximum earnings on which members pay their percentage of work dues.
The dues cap on work earnings, which has not been raised since the merger of SAG and AFTRA in 2012, is currently set at $500,000, but will be going up to $750,000 in May of 2022, and to $1 million in May of 2023.
The resolution passed at the convention states:
Whereas, member dues are the main means by which SAG-AFTRA is able to fund its work on behalf of members, and
Whereas, those resources underpin all essential SAG-AFTRA initiatives, including contract negotiations and enforcement, safety protocols and rules, diversity, equity, and inclusion, residuals processing, and countless other activities protecting our members; and

Perry King has been hard-working actor for 50 years. Recently, he made his directorial debut with the feature The Divide, which he also stars in. King always dreamt of directing his own movie, and he directed The Divide with skill and honesty outside of the Hollywood system. His own Californian cattle ranch in El Dorado County served as a backdrop. The Divide, a good-natured, neo-Western, tells the strory of Jack, a rancher suffering from the onset of dementia. The feature was shot entirely in black-and-white, evoking Perry King’s favorite frontier dramas from his favorite classic Hollywood directors.
Perry King has been an acting legend since making his film debut as Billy Pilgrim’s son Robert in George Roy Hill’s remarkable Slaughterhouse-five in 1972. For the next decade, Perry starred in one memorable film after another: The Possession Of Joel Delaney (1972), The Lords Of Flatbush (1974), Mandingo (1974), The Wild Party (1975), Lipstick, Andy...

A SAG-AFTRA panel of Asian-American actors and broadcasters expressed hope today that the recent rise in hate crimes against Asian Americans will continue to unify their communities and the nation against centuries-old discrimination and bigotry. SAG-AFTRA national vice president Clyde Kusatsu pointed out just how much attitudes have changed since he was a young man, and how much more progress still has to be made for equity to be achieved.
You can watch the full hourlong panel discussion, co-sponsored by the Asian American Journalists Association, above.
Kusatsu, speaking on Wednesday at the union’s #StopAsianHate panel, recalled that as a young theater major at Northwestern University in the late 1960s, he was asked by a professor why he wanted to be an actor, given that there were so few roles for Asian Americans. “There weren’t many on the screen and on TV who looked like me in those days,...

SAG-AFTRA leaders are calling on their members to help lead the fight against the rising tide of hate crimes and discrimination against Asian Americans.
In a message to members, president Gabrielle Carteris and Clyde Kusatsu, the union’s national vice president representing Los Angeles, said: “The ongoing wave of violence against Asian Americans is heartbreaking. As we send yet another message to members decrying hate crimes, enough is enough. Today we are asking you to help lead the fight against hate.”
They added: “Poisonous rhetoric from politicians and media figures have emboldened bigots, and with the pandemic dominating the discourse, much of that anger has been unjustifiably focused on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders.”
Citing steps the union has taken to combat that trend – long before a gunman murdered six Asian women and two other people in Georgia last week – they said that the union “can’t wage this fight alone; we need your voice.

With the third season of “Star Trek: Discovery” airing its finale on Thursday, Jan. 7, it is difficult to overstate what a significant milestone this season marked for representation across the franchise.
Case in point, the series introduced a romantic relationship between the first non-binary and transgender characters in the “Star Trek” universe, played respectively by a non-binary and a trans actor.
This recent spotlight on inclusive casting is part of an extended conversation that longtime fans like Phil Yu have been following over the years. To celebrate the steppingstones, Yu, who founded the “Angry Asian Man” blog centering on Asian American representation in Hollywood, launched a podcast in August, on which he hosts hour-long conversations with “All the Asians on ‘Star Trek.'”
While Yu half-jokingly titled his podcast, he tells Variety now that “the name points out that there are just enough [Asians] involved to make a podcast out of...

“Riverdale” star Marisol Nichols and Patrick Fabian of “Better Call Saul” are among the notable actors seeking SAG-AFTRA national board seats as allies of president Gabrielle Carteris through the Unite For Strength faction.
Other prominent national board candidates for Ufs included Kate Flannery (“The Office”), Yvette Nicole Brown (“Mom”) along with incumbent board member Lisa Vidal (“Being Mary Jane”) and “The Walking Dead” star Michael Cudlitz, first reported by Variety on July 9.
Ufs also announced earlier this week that Camryn Manheim is running for SAG-aftra secretary-treasurer — the third-highest elected post in the union — as part of the slate for the re-election of union president Carteris. Election ballots will be mailed to dues-current members on July 29 and will be tabulated on August 28. SAG-aftra represents about 160,000 performers.

Unite for Strength, the ruling party of SAG-AFTRA, announced its slate of candidates today in the union’s upcoming elections.
Michelle Hurd, currently serving on the national board, will be running for president of the Los Angeles local; Clyde Kusatsu and Ellen Crawford will be running for vice president slots. Kusatsu is currently the national vice president from La, and Crawford is a national board member. As previously reported, Camryn Manheim will be running for national secretary-treasurer as president Gabrielle Carteris’ running mate.
Two candidates are challenging Carteris for president: Jane Austin, currently the guild’s national secretary-treasurer who’s running for president as an independent, and Matthew Modine, who is running at the top of the ticket for Membership First. His slate has yet to be announced.
In New York, Rebecca Damon, national executive vice president and New York president, is running for re-election as New York president.

Hollywood unions and entertainment companies have stepped up to support the 31,000 Los Angeles teachers in the second day of a massive strike that’s affected nearly half a million students.
More than 50 SAG-AFTRA members picketed at a Tuesday afternoon rally in the driving rain next to the Hollywood & Highland Center with secretary-treasurer Jane Austin among the speakers in support of the United Teachers of Los Angeles.
“It’s important for us to support our fellow union members,” Austin said. “It’s all about showing solidarity and supporting better education for our children.”
SAG-AFTRA member Patrick Fabian (“Better Call Saul”) spoke as an Lausd parent. L. Scott Caldwell, Ellen Crawford and national vice president Clyde Kusatsu were among those attending.

At this point, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ governors election looks more like a round-up than a race; more than 180 members have declared their interest in filling 17 contested spots on the 54-member Board of Governors.
Voting in the run-off round starts on Monday and ends May 18. That will narrow the present field to a maximum of four nominees per branch in the final round, which follows.
For now, there are on average about 11 candidates in the running for each slot. In the casting directors and costume design branches, only three members have declared for each slot. But not so in the actors branch, where 17 members — including Brie Larson, Jacki Weaver and Meg Ryan — are vying for the spot being vacated by termed-out Tom Hanks; or the producers, executives, and public relations branches, all of which have a bumper crop of candidates. Marvin Levy, currently a governor in the public relations branch,...

Face front, true believers! Class is in session! Let’s call this “Doctor Strange 101”, an introduction to the newest member of the “Marvel movie-verse”, although, as you’ll soon learn, the sorcerer supreme is one of the oldest heroes. So, to get you up to speed before heading to the multiplex, we’re giving you a top ten list of facts about the “master of mystic arts”. First, a look at his lineage….

Despite what you may have heard, the 1978 Doctor Strange TV movie is one of Marvel's better early TV efforts...
Marvel's 1978 Doctor Strange TV movie (officially known as Dr. Strange) is admittedly, something of an acquired taste, but there's an undeniable charm and air of mystery about it.
See related Joseph Kosinski on Tron 3 and The Black Hole remake
It's a deliberately paced origin story set in New York City that's light on action and long on exposition and sometimes questionable special effects. The eastern elements of Strange's origin are scrubbed in favour of Arthurian overtones with Morgan le Fay (Jessica Walter playing not necessarily the Marvel Comics version) as the villain and The Ancient One replaced by "Lindmer" a mentor who is, essentially, Merlin (wonderfully played by Sir John Mills). Clyde Kusatsu's Wong isn't a robed manservant, but an ally and student of the Ancient One,...

Former "Beverly Hills 90210" star Gabrielle Carteris captured SAG-AFTRA's executive vice presidency Thursday, besting rival Mike Hodge in a vote one delegate described as "not even close." Carteris, who played high school newspaper editor Andrea Zuckerman on the series, had the backing of SAG‑AFTRA Secretary‑Treasurer Amy Aquino and Roberta Reardon, the union’s former co-president. New York Local President Hodge, meanwhile, was backed by Ken Howard, the national president, and Clyde Kusatsu, the union’s newly installed L.A. Local president. Before a total of 303 ballots were cast, two other candidates joined the race, although neither drew enough votes to influence the outcome. Carteris received 66.5 percent of the vote to 23.22 percent for Hodge. Jane Austin, who ran unsuccessfully for secretary-treasurer on a ticket with Esai Morales, received 10.28 percent. Millie Wright was also a candidate. “I am so grateful to be elected executive vice president and I look forward...

SAG-AFTRA's first post-merger national convention kicks off today under the theme “united for our future,” but the four-day event may in fact reveal some divisions within the union’s leadership. For starters, the executive vice presidency is being contested by two heavyweight contenders in the form of New York Local President Mike Hodge and Gabrielle Carteris, who currently serves on the Los Angeles Local’s board. Hodge is backed by Ken Howard, the national president, and Clyde Kusatsu, the union’s newly installed L.A. Local president, while Carteris has the backing of SAG‑AFTRA Secretary‑Treasurer Amy Aquino and Roberta Reardon, the union’s former co-president with Howard. After Carteris announced, "people were surprised that Mike made the choice [to run], but it's a democratic organization," Aquino told Backstage. Aquino said she endorsed Carteris because she "just makes sense." "Gabrielle's got a national presence," she said. "She has what...

Esai Morales and Jane Austin, who lost their races for the national presidency and secretary-treasurer positions, were elected to local board and national board seats. Gabrielle Carteris, who has held a variety of union leadership positions, was also elected to a local board and national board seat. They carry a two-year and four-year term, respectively.

With SAG-aftra election results set to be announced Thursday, union co-president Roberta Reardon will turn her attention to winning the union's executive vice presidency if she fails in her bid to lead the New York Local. "If this goes south, then I'm going to turn and look at the convention [where the Evp position is elected] because I really, strongly believe in SAG-aftra as a national union," she told Backstage. "We built a union that's very diverse and I think the union leadership should reflect that." Reardon is challenging—a term she dislikes using—Mike Hodge for the New York Local's top job. She said she's been disappointed with how some of the members have broken the race down as a SAG-versus-aftra contest. "I was very disappointed to see that people kind of defaulted to old conversations," said Reardon, who was president of AFTRA before the 2012 merger. Just under a week after SAG-AFTRA announced the candidates for its first election since last year’s merger, the Unite for Strength slate put out its list today. Current National co-President Ken Howard, who is running for the new solo top position, is La-based Ufs’ endorsed candidate in the election. Amy Aquino, who with Howard helped form Ufs several years ago, is the endorsed Secretary-Treasurer candidate. Clyde Kusatsu is the Ufs endorsed candidate for the Los Angeles Local president’s seat. Sons of Anarchy and Pacific Rim star Ron Perlman, Oscar winner Octavia Spencer (The Help) and Tony Shalhoub expressed their support for the slate. “Unite for Strength’s record of success proves that no one will fight harder or smarter to protect SAG-AFTRA members. With our TV/Theatrical negotiations ahead, it’s crucial to elect leaders who will deliver real results – that’s Unite for Strength,” said Perlman in a statement today.

Unite For Strength officially unveiled its full slate of candidates Thursday, almost a week after SAG-AFTRA published the names of those standing in the union’s first post-merger election. The group is fielding a slate of 52 candidates running for SAG-AFTRA National and Los Angeles Local Boards and more than 100 candidates vying for positions as delegates to the first SAG-AFTRA National Convention in September. Thursday's announcement didn't mention Ned Vaughn, the union’s outgoing executive vice president, who isn't seeking reelection but is running as a delegate on the Ufs slate. "I'm urging all members who want strong contracts, quicker residual payments and safe merger of our benefits to join me in voting for the entire Unite for Strength team," Ken Howard, SAG-AFTRA co-president, said in a statement. USA has a real curiosity on its hands. Coming to you tonight is a new show, Fairly Legal, and what's curious about it is that I'm not in love with it yet. As you may now, I'm a big fan of everything USA has out there (though White Collar distanced itself from me with that last episode), and their new shows usually have me hooked long before I even get a chance to see them. I'm willing to give this one a chance, even though the first few episodes are rather rough, but just the fact that I'm not already completely invested makes it USA's poorest showings in quite a while.

When in doubt on TV, blow something up.
Heaven knows that I love a good explosion; there are times when I like to just turn my brain off and watch a big, loud action movie. Seeing a car blow up in the preview for this episode of Law & Order: Los Angeles, I thought, “Oh, that looks cool!” That was until I found out that there were two small children inside. Like others who have already commented on Twitter, I found that tasteless. It’s not encouraging when the inciting incident of an episode already leaves a bad taste in your mouth. To say nothing of the cringe-inducing last line in the teaser that Skeet Ulrich somehow manages to deliver without sounding like he’s in a PSA: “When visiting your friendly neighborhood meth lab, leave the kids at home.” I half expected NBC’s “The More You Know” music to kick in after that.

In a Screen Actors Guild election that was widely considered a referendum on merger with the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, proponents of that idea emerged with a clear mandate. When the results of SAG's 2010 national board of directors election were announced Sept. 23, MembershipFirst, the SAG faction that emerged from the group of actors who helped scuttle merger in 2003, lost the fight for all 13 Hollywood-based national seats up for grabs to its rival faction, the pro-merger Unite for Strength. MembershipFirst partisans had held all 13 of those seats. The loss hands the coalition of Hollywood, New York, and regional moderates who had held a slim majority of the national seats—and who have been vocal in support of merger—a commanding boardroom advantage.Even more striking is MembershipFirst's loss of its majority on the Hollywood board. Unite for Strength won an overwhelming 33 of 35 open seats. Ufs, formed in...

SAG yesterday released the official list of candidates for its upcoming national board elections. Notably, all of the open seats in La (the Hollywood Division) are held by MembershipFirst members, which means that, as was the case last year, Mf can at best maintain its level of representation on the national board. More likely, it will lose some of its board seats.
On the Hollywood divisional board, Mf could gain or lose, as all division seats are up every year. This contrasts with the national board, where approximately 1/3 of the 69 seats are up in any given year. The president and secretary-treasurer, who are ex officio members of the board, have two-year terms, and are not up for election this year.
Ballots in Hollywood and New York will be mailed on August 24 with a return deadline and tabulation on September 23. Election results are expected to be announced that evening.
