Twin Peaks: The Return Is a Transcendent Finale

Quick Links The Return Was Not the Twin Peaks Revival the World Expected It Would Be Twin Peaks: The Return Was Steeped In the Original Series' Mythology David Lynch Left It Up to the Viewers to Make 'Sense' of Twin Peaks: The Return Showtime Let David Lynch Run Free With Twin Peaks: The Return

When Agent Dale Cooper asked, "How's Annie?" in front of a bloody, broken mirror, fans of Twin Peaks waited 25 years for a chance to find out the answer. When Twin Peaks: The Return wrapped up its 18-episode story in September 2017, they still didn't know. The Twin Peaks sequel series from co-creators Mark Frost and David Lynch was as beautifully unconventional as it was frustrating. In an era of reboots and revivals, The Return is actively anti-nostalgic.

On January 16, 2025, David Lynch died from complications associated with emphysema, breaking the hearts of weird art kids of all ages.

Heroes: Eclipsed - Confirmation & Everything We Know
Image
Nearly a decade-and-a-half after Heroes went off the air, the classic Aughts TV sensation is getting another major reboot in the form of the recently announced Heroes: Eclipsed. Debuting in 2006, the show was created by Tim Kring and follows ordinary people around the globe who discover that they suddenly have superpowers and must put them to good use to save the world. The first season was one of the pinnacles of 2000s TV, and it helped to shape the blossoming TV revolution that would explode in the early years of the 2010s.

Heroes' four seasons on the air were anything but smooth, and the show quickly took a nosedive after its first season captured audiences and earned it critical acclaim. Each subsequent season performed worse and worse with critics and in the ratings until Heroes was canceled after season 4 to the shock and surprise of its die-hard fanbase. 2015's Heroes Reborn...

Heroes' New Reboot Is Pointless If These 2 Original Characters Don't Return
Image
Heroes: Eclipsed needs to bring back Peter and Claire for it to succeed and stay true to the original series. Heroes: Reborn failed because it didn't focus on the core characters that made the original show special. The new Heroes reboot must undo the plot of Heroes: Reborn to bring back Peter and Claire effectively.

Heroes: Eclipsed, a reboot of the 2006 Heroes TV series, is in the works, but it will only be worth it if two of its most essential characters return. Heroes was unfortunately canceled after its fourth season in 2010, leaving many vital storylines unresolved. The franchise attempted a reboot in 2015 called Heroes: Reborn, but the show did nothing to tie up the loose ends its predecessor left, and it was nearly immediately canceled as well. Now, Heroes: Eclipsed has the opportunity to prove that it has learned from past mistakes, and if it is ever to be successful,...

Heroes: Every Main Character's Powers & Abilities Explained
Image
"Heroes" featured unique, flawed characters with non-traditional powers, setting it apart from typical superhero stories. Peter Petrelli had the ability of Empathic Mimicry, allowing him to replicate powers after coming into contact with others. The series showcased various characters with diverse powers such as flight, immortality, space-time manipulation, enhanced strength, telepathy, precognition, and body transformation.

Heroes featured an incredible cast of powered people with a wide variety of powers and abilities. The series originally aired on NBC from 2006 to 2010, where it became a huge success and amassed a dedicated fanbase. This was partially down to the incredible characters and writing developed by creator Tim Kring, who were uniquely different from most other contemporary superhero stories.

While Marvel and DC featured superheroes who feel a moral obligation to save the world, Heroes created a cast of real-world powered people. Humans that had flaws equal to or greater than the powers they possessed.

The Upcoming Heroes Reboot Must Fix A Terrible Habit Of The Original Series
Image
Heroes: Eclipsed must avoid drastic character shifts to maintain viewer loyalty. The reboot needs strong character writing to stand out in a competitive media landscape. Heroes' original flaws, including jarring character changes, must be addressed for Eclipsed to succeed.

In April 2024, it was confirmed that Heroes' creator Tim Kring is returning to the world of his superhero drama series with a reboot, Heroes: Eclipsed. Set an unspecified number of years after the events of the original show, a new cast of evolved humans will grapple with their suddenly discovered powers. While the 13-episode reboot has plenty of Heroes problems to fix, it's also being released in a very different media landscape. In the wake of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) rise (and recent missteps), the comic book-inspired show has new pop-cultural terrain to navigate.

When the four-season Heroes first debuted in 2006, its premise was novel in the world of mainstream television.

Every Season Of Heroes, Ranked Worst To Best
Image
"Heroes" started strong with captivating characters and a unique premise, but lost momentum in subsequent seasons due to fluctuating quality. Season 3's "Villains" was too dense, lacking enough character development, despite adding important elements to the series' larger narrative. "Heroes Reborn" spin-off was entertaining with cameos from the original series, but fell short in quality compared to the original series.

Heroes proved to be a divisive show after the first season became a viral hit, and subsequent seasons seemed to waver in quality. Heroes was first released on NBC in 2006, where the first season had significant critical acclaim. The series, based on an original superhero story by creator Tim Kring, presents a world where a major anomaly causes a small percentage of people to leap forward in evolution, developing special powers that separate them from ordinary humans in unique and spectacular ways.

The series got off to a great start with a captivating villain,...

Heroes' Second Reboot In 9 Years Is The Last Chance To Fix Season 2's Infamous Mistakes
Image
Heroes: Eclipsed is the last chance to revive the Heroes franchise under Tim Kring. Previous seasons failed to recapture the magic of the show's first season. To succeed, Eclipsed must focus on character development and avoid past mistakes.

Heroes: Eclipsed could give series creator Tim Kring one last chance to bring the Heroes franchise to its original heights. When Heroes premiered, the purposefully grounded approach to the superhero genre became a hit for NBC. However, the second season of the show was an infamous mess, with a truncated storyline and clunky writing costing Heroes much of the goodwill it developed early on. The subsequent Heroes seasons attempted to recapture the magic of the first season but largely failed. Heroes ran for four seasons before being canceled.

It was eventually followed up with a miniseries titled Heroes Reborn, but the continuation failed to renew interest in the franchise. Now, Kring is...

Characters like Mohinder Suresh and Tracy Strauss should also be brought back to help develop the narrative in the upcoming Heroes: Eclipsed series.

Heroes is set to get a remake, but to do the original series justice, several characters need to return and finish their story. Heroes quickly gained widespread critical acclaim after the first season began airing in 2006 and the series was nominated for a variety of awards, including Primetime Emmys. Heroes' Latest Reboot Comes At The Worst Possible Time - And That's Why I Can't Wait
Image
Heroes: Eclipsed brings back original creator Tim Kring for a new story set several years later. Despite the oversaturation of superhero content, Heroes: Eclipsed could offer a fresh take on the genre by returning to its groundbreaking roots. To succeed, Heroes: Eclipsed must address past issues, rediscover its magic, and innovate to keep up with modern superhero storytelling.

Heroes' latest reboot attempt may come at the worst possible time, but in a strange way, that only makes Heroes: Eclipsed even more tantalizing. Heroes premiered with a bang in 2006, and for a brief time, Tim Kring's superhero universe was among the biggest things on TV. The Kringdom rapidly collapsed as the disappointing Heroes season 2 suffered one of the worst sophomore slumps in TV history. Seasons 3 and 4 nobly attempted to course-correct, but the damage had been done, and Heroes was canceled unceremoniously in 2010. Rather than turning the franchise's fortunes around, 2015's short-lived...

These 'Heroes' Episodes Tease Several Dark Futures for the Show
Image
When it comes to rocking an original premise, Heroes hit the ground running with its, well, groundbreaking first season. The show instantly took the "normal people with extraordinary abilities" premise to another level, with global ramifications that make this world feel just massive. One such way that Heroes felt particularly unique was its penchant for throwing its cast into an array of potential "dark futures" which always shatter our expectations and twist the narrative just enough to keep things interesting. While we comic book readers have been privy to these sorts of adventures long before Heroes creator Tim Kring brought the concept to television, the NBC series threw general audiences for a loop by making them do the time warp nearly every season. It's these episodes that helped make Heroes so special––and is part of why we still love the show after all these years.

Sylar Should’ve Stayed a Villain on ‘Heroes’
Image
When a television series is named Heroes, it has to have an engaging villain to counteract the character you're rooting for. Superman has Lex Luthor, Batman has the Joker, and Spider-Man has Doc Ock, but for the cast of Tim Kring's superhero drama series, it was always Sylar. From the moment Heroes launched, Sylar was built up as this infamous and intimidating force that would rip you apart if he looked at you wrong. He was the most fearsome being in the fictional universe, and even when he was defeated (for a time), the threat lingered like an old wound. Played masterfully by Zachary Quinto in all four seasons of the original show, Sylar was Heroes' greatest adversary — that is, until he wasn't.

Heroes was a surprising show in the early 2000s from producer Tim Kring for both its genre content and serialization. The character of Claire Bennet was integral to the story, but she wasn't a damsel in distress and was instead striving for autonomy. Her first heroic "mission" involved protecting the women in her school from an all-too common kind of predator.

This article discusses scenes of sexual assault and intimate partner violence.

Two years before Iron Man would vault ensemble superhero universes into the highest echelons of pop culture, a television show on NBC tried to assemble its own Avengers. Created by Tim Kring, Heroes was a broadcast television drama that was ahead of its time in a lot of ways. One example of how the show didn't fall into the common tropey traps of mid-oughts TV and genre stories is in general is the importance of high-school cheerleader hero,...

10 Hit-Or-Miss TV Shows With Inconsistent Quality
Image
Some TV shows start strong but dip in quality as the seasons progress, frustrating and disappointing audiences. Even highly acclaimed shows can struggle initially and require multiple attempts to find success. TV shows can be hit or miss, with some viewers sticking around in hopes of improvement while others give up after the first episode.

With highly acclaimed TV shows like The Sopranos and Breaking Bad consistently entertaining audiences from start to finish, some series had more unbalanced runs. In the world of television, the journey of a show's quality can be an unpredictable rollercoaster. Some series burst onto the scene with a compelling narrative, engrossing characters, and a level of intrigue that captivates audiences. However, as the seasons roll on, these once-promising shows may dip drastically in quality, leaving audiences frustrated and disappointed.

This phenomenon isn't exclusive to those that started strong. Even some of the best TV shows...

Why Heroes Was Canceled After Season 4 (Then Canceled Again 6 Years Later)
Image
Heroes ran for four seasons on NBC, before being canceled and was followed up by a revival, only to have it canceled again. Heroes was wholly unique for its time. A few years before superhero movies took over the film industry, the series was part of a much smaller superhero boom in the mid-2000s. Following in the footsteps of shows like Smallville, Heroes proved that superhero stories didn't require the budget of a theatrical movie to work.

The premise for Heroes was relatively unique, seeing ordinary individuals suddenly gaining super abilities like reading minds, rapid cellular regeneration, and space-time manipulation. Led by protagonist and hospice nurse Peter Petrelli, the new group of amateur superheroes had to band together to face off against the superpowered serial killer Sylar (Zachary Quinto) in season 1, and faced various other threats like the mysterious Shanti virus. With the stellar Heroes cast, heart-pounding action, intriguing plot,...

House of the Dragon May Suffer The Same Fate as Heroes' Worst Season
Image
Some TV series aren't going to be hurt by the 2023 Writers Guild of America strike. Some, however, exist in a precarious balance that requires them to air while writing and filming are taking place. To see how losing writers can hurt these shows, one only needs to look at Tim Kring's Heroes Season 2.

While it's said about many television series, Heroes truly was a show ahead of its time. It debuted in 2006, two years before Marvel Studios staved off the end of "the comic book fad" in films. Unlike superhero-themed films and shows of then (and today), Heroes was an original concept. The first season was a hit, though it did suffer a precipitous drop in ratings after an extended mid-season break, itself a new thing in TV at the time. When Season 2 debuted, hopes were high for the series, but the show the storytellers delivered was not what fans wanted to see.

Tim Kring
Heroes (2006-2010): Gone But Not Forgotten
Tim Kring
When it premiered in 2006, Tim Kring’s Heroes was raved about and considered the next great piece of episodic genre TV. Many thought it would be the next Lost, and Hayden Panettiere (who’s back in a big way with Scream VI) became a star overnight. But, as soon as season 2 started, the show seemingly jumped the shark, and what began as a promising superhero epic became just another TV soap opera. What happened? Part of it had to do with the fact that Bryan Fuller, who consulted on Season One, left before the second season, while the second season also coincided with the WGA Writer’s Strike, which spelled the doom for many shows. While Heroes would continue for another few seasons, viewership died off, and many felt that the show never lived up to the considerable promise of the first season.

In this episode of Gone But Not Forgotten,...

Brady Organization Calls On Hollywood To Examine Onscreen Gun Violence; Hundreds Of Writers, Producers & Directors Sign Pledge
Image
The Brady organization against gun violence is calling on Hollywood writers, directors and producers to examine onscreen gun violence and depictions of gun safety, asking the creative community to sign a pledge that’s already garnered more than 200 signatures of such names as Judd Apatow, Shonda Rhimes, Damon Lindelof and Jimmy Kimmel and the writers of Jimmy Kimmel Live!

The pledge, while noting that the “responsibility lies with lax gun laws supported by those politicians more afraid of losing power than saving lives,” acknowledges that “America’s storytellers” have the power to “effect change.”

“Cultural attitudes toward smoking, drunk driving, seatbelts and marriage equality have all evolved due in large part to movies’ and TV’s influence. It’s time to take on gun safety,” the Brady pledge states, and goes on to ask writers, directors and producers to, whenever possible, to:

Use creativity “to model responsible gun ownership and...

Here's What Happened To The Cast Of Heroes
Tim Kring
Tim Kring intended for "Heroes" to have a shifting cast. That was a sensible impulse: The show -- which aired on NBC from 2006-2010 -- concerned ordinary people who discover they have superhuman abilities. If the series' primary thrust was proving how extraordinary an average human could be, casting a fresh batch of actors each season seems like a prudent way to drive the theme home -- and to discover new breakout stars in the process.

Except it wasn't. The original cast of "Heroes" proved so popular with audiences that Kring and his writing staff jettisoned the original plan and brought back most of the show's first-season ensemble...

Ali Larter Responds to Fired Heroes Co-Star's Allegations: 'I Am Truly Sorry'
Ali Larter
Ali Larter is speaking out.

The Heroes star issued an apology on Wednesday after her former co-star Leonard Roberts came forward with allegations of mistreatment on the show, which he says led to his dismissal from the NBC drama.

In a statement to TV Line, Larter said the following:

“I am deeply saddened to hear about Leonard Roberts’ experience on Heroes and I am heartbroken reading his perception of our relationship, which absolutely doesn’t match my memory nor experience on the show," she told the outlet.

"I respect Leonard as an artist and I applaud him or anyone using their voice and platform. I am truly sorry for any role I may have played in his painful experience during that time and I wish him and his family the very best.”

Roberts penned an essay for Variety, which went public earlier on Wednesday, which found Roberts recalling his experience of working on the show.

Ali Larter Responds to Leonard Roberts’ Accusations: ‘I Am Truly Sorry’
Image
Actor Ali Larter responded on Wednesday to the account by her “Heroes” co-star Leonard Roberts — who, in a first-person essay for Variety published earlier in the day, said Larter mistreated him while working on the first season of the hit NBC series, eventually leading to his dismissal from the show. Roberts believes the fact he’s Black affected that decision.

In a statement to Variety‘s sibling publication TVLine, Larter said: “I am deeply saddened to hear about Leonard Roberts’ experience on Heroes and I am heartbroken reading his perception of our relationship, which absolutely doesn’t match my memory nor experience on the show. I respect Leonard as an artist and I applaud him or anyone using their voice and platform. I am truly sorry for any role I may have played in his painful experience during that time and I wish him and his family the very best.

Leonard Roberts Breaks Decade-Plus Silence on Heroes Firing, Says 'Tension' With On-Screen Love Interest Ali Larter Led to His 2007 Dismissal
Image
Former Heroes star Leonard Roberts says friction with on-screen love interest Ali Larter, coupled with a lack of diversity behind-the-scenes at NBC’s superhero smash, led to him being fired after just one season.

In a lengthy essay published by our sister pub Variety, the actor recounts the instant friction he experienced in Season 1 with Larter, who played Niki Sanders, the wife of his D.L. Hawkins character. “The script suggested D.L. and Niki had a volatile relationship — and it wasn’t long before art was imitating life,” Roberts writes, before describing two instances where the pair clashed. After one of the dustups,...

‘Heroes’ Was Supposed to Be Leonard Roberts’ Big Break. Instead, It Nearly Broke Him.
Image
Leonard Roberts is best known for his roles in the movie “Drumline,” and on the television shows “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” “American Crime Story,” “Major Crimes” — and for his performance as D.L. Hawkins on the first season of NBC’s “Heroes.” While the fantasy show debuted in 2006 to immediate blockbuster status, making overnight sensations of many of its stars — including Zachary Quinto, Masi Oka, Milo Ventimiglia and Hayden Panettiere — Roberts’ time on the show was far more troubled. As he details in his account below, he experienced immediate friction with his main co-star Ali Larter — and perceived indifference from creator and showrunner Tim Kring — that led him to feel singled out as a Black actor, a feeling that only grew more intense after he was fired from the show after its first season.

Variety corroborated Roberts’ account with 10 people who either worked on “Heroes” at the time or were...

Heroes Was A Missed Opportunity
Image
Beginning in 2006, NBC’s pulpy comic book-esque series Heroes ran for four seasons consisting of 77 episodes and over 30 online “minisodes.” The original run was followed up with 13-episode reboot Heroes Reborn in 2015. All in all, the franchise produced over 65 hours of content. Of those 65+ hours of Heroes, 20 seconds are absolutely, devastatingly perfect.

That 20 second of Heroes nirvana occurs in the 20th episode of the show’s first season, “Five Years Gone.” In it, the temporally-displaced Hiro Nakamura and his friend Ando Masahashi time travel five years into the future to discover what will become of the world if a prophesied explosion isn’t stopped. Things are properly dystopian with a superpowered president Nathan Petrelli (Adrian Pasdar) rounding up and imprisoning his fellow supes. Ultimately, however, Hiro discovers that Nathan Petrelli isn’t Nathan Petrelli at all but a disguised power-hoarder Gabriel Gray a.k.a. Sylar (Zachary Quinto). Peter Petrelli...
