Ryan Murphy may be a contentious figure, but his legacy is undeniable. His massive output has earned him plenty of acclaim — and some criticism. Even so, one of his latest works, Doctor Odyssey, is making big waves on ABC. It has all those recognizable Murphy hallmarks. There’s plenty of drama, more than enough innuendo, and a healthy heap of romance. These spices are tempered by the show’s playful comedy and (mostly) lighthearted tone. After some clever mixing, the results are wrapped in the sort of over-the-top scenarios that made Murphy’s 9-1-1 so compelling.

Knowing all that, it’s not hard to see why Doctor Odyssey fans are begging for more. The show’s September 2024 debut was ABC’s highest-rated premiere in four years, and Murphy’s narrative has some serious staying power. However, there’s not much to see — not yet, at least. So, what can fans do while they wait?...

Its exciting and new. Come and join us. Were expecting you. Anyone who grew up in the 70s or 80s, or who loves retro TV, will recognize those words as lyrics from the iconic theme song to the romantic comedy-drama The Love Boat. The ABC series, which aired for nine seasons from 1977 through 1986 along with several special episodes, hailed from Aaron Spelling, the powerhouse behind iconic shows like Beverly Hills, 90210, Dynasty, and Melrose Place. And it was a massive success. Ryan Murphy, arguably this generations Spelling, may have drawn inspiration from this series for his latest hit. Doctor Odyssey is a medical drama that takes the procedural format to the open seas.

The main similarity between these two shows is, of course, that they both take place on the water via cruise ship. But its difficult not to draw other comparisons. In fact, Doctor Odyssey is a modern-day version of The Love Boat.

Before "Austin Powers," "Johnny English," and "Top Secret!" there was "Get Smart," the 1960s spy sitcom that mined the genre for laughs when the James Bond and "Mission: Impossible" franchises were still in their infancies. Co-created by comedy legends Mel Brook and Buck Henry, "Get Smart" ran for five seasons from 1965 to 1970, earning seven Primetime Emmys and plenty of other accolades along the way.

Stand-up comedian Don Adams starred as Maxwell Smart, the sometimes inept top-secret agent who regularly held the fate of the world in his hands ... and often almost fumbled it. By his side was the beautiful, super-cool Agent 99 (Barbara Feldon), who loves Maxwell despite his clumsiness and penchant for messing up missions. The central trio was rounded out by Edward Platt's The Chief, the supportive leader of the intelligence agency Control, which employed both Agent 99 and Maxwell.

A new cruise inspired by the iconic 1970s sitcom “The Love Boat” will hit water this summer.

This will be the second “Love Boat”-themed cruise from Princess Cruises, the same company featured in the original show, following the success of their inaugural themed cruise in 2022. During the seven-day trip — taking place from Aug. 31 – Sept. 7 2024 — fans of the popular show can sail along with Doc, Gopher, Isaac and Vicki Stubing as they cruise roundtrip from New York to Canada and New England aboard Enchanted Princess.

“Love Boat” cast members confirmed to be in attendance include Bernie Kopell (Doc), Fred Grandy (Gopher), and Ted Lange (Isaac). Ezra Freeman, the bartender from the recent CBS reality series “The Real Love Boat” will also join the cast, along with other surprise guests to be announced.

Jeffrey Ballard, the veteran publicist who represented the likes of Charlie Sheen, Lori Loughlin, Johnny Depp, Paula Abdul and Matthew Perry, has died. He was 64.

Ballard died Jan. 30 at UCLA Santa Monica Medical Center after a long battle with lymphoma, Brad Bessey, director of communications and talent relations of Project Angel Food, told The Hollywood Reporter.

Ballard’s client roster at one time or another also included Zac Efron, Ryan Seacrest, C. Thomas Howell, Rob Gronkowski, Kristy McNicol, Cuba Gooding, Jr., Jared Leto, Willie Aames, Jerry Van Dyke, Cary Elwes, Bernie Koppel, Peter Marshall and Corbin Bernsen.

Jean Veloz, the innovative Lindy Hop dancer who dazzled in Swing Fever and other Hollywood musicals of the 1940s, has died. She was 98.

Veloz died Sunday at her home in Los Angeles, her friend, agent and manager Rusty Frank told The Hollywood Reporter. Frank co-produced the 2010 event A Tribute to the Groovie Movie, which celebrated Veloz and her contribution to dance.

“Jean innovated a style of swing dance that was admired around the world,” Frank said. “It was silky smooth and greatly contrasted the more jitterbug style prevalent during the 1930s-’40s.”

Generations of dancers idolized her.

In MGM’s Swing Fever (1943), Veloz whirled with servicemen portrayed by Lennie Smith and Don Gallagher in the high-octane number “One Girl and Two Boys,” accompanied by Kay Kyser’s band and sandwiched between Marilyn Maxwell’s singing.

“The Love Boat” soon will be making another run, promising something for everyone — but this time as a reality dating series.

CBS and its sister Australian broadcaster Network 10 have both ordered local versions of “The Real Love Boat,” set to air in the U.S. and Australia later this year. The show is exactly what it sounds like: A reality dating competition show, but patterned after the hit 1970s hour-long comedy “The Love Boat.”

And just as Princess Cruises served as the backdrop to the scripted series, the cruise line’s ships will also serve as a setting for the new unscripted shows.

Tonight, at 8:00 Pm (Est), the complete cast of The Love Boat -- Gavin MacLeod (Captain Stubing), Fred Grandy (Gopher), Ted Lange (Isaac), Bernie Kopell (Doc), Lauren Tewes (Julie), and Jill Whelan (Vicki) -- will be reuniting on Stars In the House. B Positive will be on the CBS schedule for a bit longer.

The freshman comedy has nabbed a full season order at CBS, becoming one of few shows to pull off such a move in that pandemic-affected season.

While the show has been expanded, no details on how many episodes have actually been ordered.

ABC's Big Sky recently got a six-episode back-order, keeping it around for 16 episodes.

However, that show is heavily serialized, meaning that fewer episodes were probably a part of a commitment between the creatives and the network.

B Positive Season 1 is averaging 5 million viewers and a 0.56 rating in the all-important 18-49 demo.

The series, which hails from Chuck Lorre, is holding up well in its Thursday slot and pulling in decent enough ratings to stick around.

B Positive was the only completed broadcast pilot ahead of this season due to the Covid-19 shutdowns that plagued the industry.

Less than a month after ABC reversed its decision to renew Stumptown for a second season, star Michael Ealy is already planning his return to the network via the medical drama pilot Triage, our sister site Deadline reports.

Triage follows a pioneering surgeon named Finley Briar (Midnight, Texas‘ Parisa Fitz-Henley) across three decades working in the same hospital. “With the evolution of medicine as the backdrop, the show explores the interconnected careers, friendships and romances of Finley and her colleagues, and their tenuous relationship with time,” per ABC’s official description.

Jeraldine Saunders, author of the 1974 book “The Love Boats” that inspired the classic ABC series “The Love Boat,” died on Monday at her home in Glendale, Calif., due to complications from kidney stone surgery. She was 96.

The book is Saunders’ firsthand account as the first female cruise director for a major cruise line, Princess Cruises. The series, developed by W.L. Baumes, was billed as “Suggested by Jeraldine Saunders’ ‘The Love Boats” in the show’s opening credit sequence.

“The Love Boat” bowed on ABC in the 1976-1977 season as three TV movies. The show became a regular weekly series on ABC in the 1977-1978 season and ran for some 250 episodes, through the 1985-86 season. A handful of new “Love Boat” specials also aired on ABC the following season.

At the time of her death, Saunders was the daily writer of Omarr’s Astrological Forecast, Tribune Media’s syndicated astrology column.

For all its many faults, I've enjoyed NBC's Timeless this season, because I get a healthy dose of history each week.

Now that it's in its seventh season, Hawaii Five-0 has really started to tap into Hawaii's 1,000 years of history, discovering some unique narrative settings as a result.

This episode told the story of the Kalaupapa Leprosy Settlement, in the Kalaupapa National Historic Site on Molokai.

This was neatly handled by having the island's law, Sheriff Alana, explain the settlement's history to McGarrett and Chin on the ride out. That way, the viewer quickly got brought up to speed.

So many shows on the Top 100 list got axed before their time, from Deadwood to My So-Called Life, from Freaks and Geeks to Party Down. These also could have been contenders, had they a little more time to find the audience. We present the best of the gone-too-soon bunch that didn't make our list.

We are with the cast of The Love Boat in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida as they reunite for the first time in nearly 10 years.

The cast met up to celebrate Princess Cruises' 50th anniversary by christening a new ship. The original six cast members -- Gavin MacLeod (Captain Stubing), Fred Grandy (Gopher, the chief purser), Ted Lange (Isaac, the bartender), Bernie Kopell (Doc, the ship's doctor), Lauren Tewes (cruise director Julie) and Jill Whelan (Vicki, the captain's daughter) -- as well as guest stars like Florence Henderson, Doris Roberts and Loni Anderson were on hand for The Regal Princess' naming ceremony, which was hosted by Tori Spelling, daughter of series creator Aaron Spelling.

The original cast members and guest stars will reunite to christen a new cruise ship.

The Love Boat sails again! Princess Cruises announced Thursday that the cast of “The Love Boat” will reunite in Florida on Nov. 5th to celebrate the cruise line’s 50th anniversary by christening a new ship. The original six cast members, as well as guest stars like Florence Henderson, Doris Roberts, and Loni Anderson, will be on hand for The Regal Princess’s naming ceremony, which will be hosted by Tori Spelling, daughter of series creator Aaron Spelling.

“The Love Boat is one of my favorite shows," Tori Spelling told Et. "And the fact that I get the chance to be part of the cast and guest star reunion is thrilling."

The Talk co-hosts were all aboard this week, dressing up as characters from The Love Boat to celebrate a reunion for the series.

Most of the boat's crew was in attendance Tuesday, including Gavin MacLeod (the Captain), Bernie Kopell (Dr. Adam Bricker), Ted Lange (Isaac Washington), Fred Grandy (Burl "Gopher" Smith), Lauren Tewes (Cruise Director Julie McCoy) and Jill Whelan (Vicki Stubing).

Even Charo, who would often appear on the show as entertainer April Lopez, made a surprise visit.

The reunion will feature cast members Gavin MacLeod (Captain Merrill Stubing), Bernie Kopell (Dr. Adam 'Doc' Bricker), Ted Lange (Isaac Washington), Fred Grandy (Burl 'Gopher' Smith), Lauren Tewes (Julie McCoy), and Jill Whelan (Vicki Stubing).

Chicago – The TV show “Get Smart,” which had its original run on the NBC network from 1965-1970, was an oddball classic. Created by Mel Brooks and Buck Henry, the sitcom was a goofy satire on cold war politics of the 1960s, with a hapless operative named Maxwell Smart (Don Adams) working for the Control agency, spying against a foreign menace called Kaos. Barbara Feldon (Agent 99) and Bernie Kopell (Sigfried) were part of the supporting cast.

Sales of new Lancelot Link DVD set to benefit chimp rescue.

Lancelot Link: Secret Chimp, the 1970s cult classic Saturday morning TV show, is getting a new life thanks to a spiffy new DVD set, and sales of the set will help save the home of the chimp that played Lancelot.

Film Chest will release a special 3-disc set of Lancelot Link on May 29, featuring all 17 episodes of the series that aired from 1970 to 1972. Using the original film masters from ABC to ensure the best image quality, the episodes will be presented in their original format and with their original mono soundtrack. This set will also include a number of extras, including behind the scenes information and interviews with Allan Sandler, the show's original producer. A documentary short, "I Created Lancelot Link," will also be included.

A previous release of the series on DVD by Image did not include all of the original episodes,...

The Love Boat promises something fun for everyone! But if you want adventure and romance aboard the former Pacific Princess Cruise ship, made famous by Your Captain, Doc and Isaac on The Love Boat —it might be too late. According to Italy's La Repubblica, the 40-year-old ship has been sold to a Turkish demolition company for around 2.5 million euro ($3.3 million) and will be torn apart at a scrap yard. The ship, built in the '60s, provided the iconic The Love Boat backdrop during its run from 1977 to 1986. Gavin MacLeod, Bernie Kopell and Ted Lange were the only castmembers to appear in every episode of the regular TV series.

The show went off the air in 1986, but members of the cast reunited for a series of TV movies, including 1990's The Love Boat: A Valentine Voyage. In 1998, as part of the short-lived The Love Boat: The Next Wave series, members of the cast reboarded the Pacific Princess for a journey down memory lane.

Now, the cast is set to reunite for the upcoming TV Land Awards. Scheduled to appear are Gavin MacLeod, Fred Grandy, Bernie Kopell, Ted Lange, Ted McGinley, Lauren Tewes, and Jill Whelan. Frequent guest star Charo will also take part. The cast will be presented with the Fan Favorite Award.
