Laura Kirk(I)

Laura Kirk is an award-winning filmmaker based in Kansas. In New York, Kirk studied with Wynn Handman, Suzanne Esper and Alan Arkin. Kirk was a founding member of the Workhouse Theatre Company and a founding teaching artist with Dreamyard Drama Project. Kirk worked regionally, off-Broadway, and commercially until she co-wrote and starred in one of the first digital films: Lisa Picard is Famous: Cannes (2000). It is included in John Gaspard's book "Fast, Cheap and Under Control ...Lessons Learned from the Greatest Low Budget Movies of All Time." After a career working on both coasts, Kirk returned to Kansas, got an MFA in Screenwriting from Stephens College on the Jim Henson lot campus, and now serves as a professor at the University of Kansas. Filmmaking and theatre performance are her areas of supported research at the university. An avid birder, gardener, dog person, and passionate mentor, Kirk works to remedy inequity, updates history, and tells untold stories.
