Peacock's Friday the 13th prequel series Crystal Lake finds its Mrs. Voorhees
Image
Things are finally getting somewhere regarding the highly anticipated Friday the 13th prequel series, Crystal Lake. While there have been several updates since the show's announcement in 2022, there was one really big update back in May 2024 that wasn't what fans were expecting. With the firing of the original series creator, Bryan Fuller, people were left uncertain about the direction the series would take. Then, three months later, Brad Caleb Kane was brought on to the project as the new creator, showrunner, and executive producer. Now, we've just learned of a new cast addition.

A beloved actress has joined the prequel series, playing an iconic role from the 1980 slasher. This talented star is in no way new to the horror world, having starred in a few horror projects in the past. It's none other than Emmy-nominated actress Linda Cardellini. You might recognize her from the horror flicks Strangeland, Scooby-Doo, Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed...

Friday the 13th Prequel Series Reportedly Finds Its Pamela Voorhees in MCU Star
Image
The Friday the 13th prequel series, Crystal Lake, will further explore the origins of Jason Voorhees. Casting is underway, and a new report has hinted at who may be playing Jason's mother, Pamela Voorhees, originally played by Betsy Palmer in the original Friday the 13th.

According to film industry insider Jeff Sneider of The InSneider, Linda Cardellini is in talks to take on the role of Pamela Voorhees. The report has not been officially addressed by anyone involved with the production and is not confirmed at this point. There were previous reports that Charlize Theron was wanted for the role, though it's unclear if she was ever given an offer or in talks for the part. No other casting information has been revealed, though original Friday the 13th star Adrienne King had hinted at a role back when Bryan Fuller was developing the project; after Fuller's exit, the series was retooled,...

Linda Cardellini Eyes Chilling Role in A24’s ‘Crystal Lake’ – A ‘Friday the 13th’ Prequel!
Image
In 2022, a ‘Friday the 13th’ prequel series called ‘Crystal Lake’ was announced. It was originally being developed by Bryan Fuller and Victor Miller, with A24 producing and Peacock set to air it.

In January 2023, Adrienne King, who played Alice Hardy in the 1980 film, joined the cast in a secret role. Writing for the series began later that month, with Kevin Williamson contributing an episode.

However, in May 2024, Fuller was removed from the project as A24 decided to take a new creative approach. In August 2024, Brad Caleb Kane was named the new showrunner. The show is scheduled to premiere on Halloween 2025.

Now Jeff Sneider, a popular industry insider has potential news regarding the project. According to the report, actress Linda Cardellini is in discussions to portray Pamela Voorhees, Jason’s mother.

This news is significant because Pamela Voorhees is a key figure in ‘Friday the 13th’ lore. In the original 1980 film,...

Friday the 13th Fans Get an Amazing Streaming Surprise for January
Image
Fans of the Friday the 13th movie series have a good reason to go binge-watch the original series of eight films from Paramount Pictures.

As reported by ComicBook, the first eight Friday the 13th films have been made available to watch for free on the free streaming platform Pluto TV. This includes all of the original movies to have Friday the 13th as part of the title, all of which were made under the Paramount umbrella. They are also the complete set of films from the franchise to be released in the 1980s, with the eighth film dropping in 1989. For some fans of the franchise, it marked the end of an era before the ninth installment, Jason Goes to Hell, took the movie series in a wildly different direction.

Every Friday the 13th Film, Ranked by Body Count
Image
In 1980, Friday the 13th kicked off a whole new franchise that has since become one of the most indelible parts of the slasher genre, if not horror as a whole. Throughout the course of a dozen feature films, the Friday the 13th franchise has cut down hundreds of characters, transforming its tent pole slasher, Jason Voorhees, into one of the most prolific killers in the genre.

Of course, not every Friday the 13th film has the same body count, nor do they all hold up as triumphs of filmmaking. In fact, many of the franchise's entries have gone on to hold a special place in the hearts of fans not for how good they are as movies unto themselves, but for the overtly absurd directions that they pushed the franchise toward. That being said, every Friday the 13th film has something to offer audiences, and what they offer is always...

Is the Original “Friday the 13th” Movie Based on a True Story?
Image
Superstitions and beliefs whether true or not run down for generations and turn into scariest phenomena. One such is about Friday the 13th which started centuries and decades ago and has now created a frenzy among people. The day is often combined with bad luck and misfortunes: rotten number 13 with Friday,

This superstition became more popular after a movie about the same was created. It was in 1980, just before summer, that a film by Victor Miller and Sean Cunningham was released that would change the history of horror forever.

Considered a classic in horror and slasher genres, Friday the 13th’s popularity has led to the making of many more films in this series, and has turned Camp Crystal Lake into the most dangerous site in the United States.

But years after the release of the film, have you wondered whether or not the film is based on a true story?...

Friday The 13th: Every Character Who Survived Jason Voorhees
Image
Your browser does not support the video tag.

Jason Voorhees racked up an enormous body count over the course of his long cinematic career, but there were Friday the 13th survivors that show he isn't as powerful as he might think. When it comes to killing, Jason is definitely in the upper echelons of the horror genre, a truly formidable practitioner of the murdering arts. Spurred on by his mother's death via decapitation, Jason is happy to make use of any conceivable object that might happen to be around when he encounters prey, most famously wielding a machete. Jason takes his job seriously, and no one who comes near Camp Crystal Lake is ever really safe.

Despite being a hulking beast, Jason is extremely sneaky, often popping up with stabbing implements in hand with absolutely no warning. This only gets more pronounced after he is resurrected as a zombie, leading...

Friday the 13th: Best Endings in the Franchise
Image
Another Friday the 13th is upon us – unfortunately, we’re just talking about the date, not the release of a new Friday the 13th movie. But while the future of Friday the 13th currently depends on what happens with the Crystal Lake TV series, we can still go back and revisit the awesome F13 movies we have received over the years… and now we have decided to go through our Friday the 13th films collection and pick the top 5 Best Endings in the Friday the 13th Franchise!

Friday The 13th Part III (1982)

This one is all about the chase. While Steve Miner’s Friday the 13th Part III was at one time expected to be the last movie in the franchise (so they made it extra special by shooting it in 3-D), the way Jason is dispatched doesn’t feel like a finishing blow. An axe to his hockey mask-protected...

That season will likely premiere sometime next spring, but one of the many great things about The Last Drive-In is that we always get a good number of specials between the seasons. In fact, we’re going to get two specials just this month, including a Friday the 13th double feature with special guest Adrienne King!

The first special will be airing not on Shudder but on AMC (Shudder is owned and operated by AMC Networks). Here’s the information:

Friday The 13th: Every Version Of Jason Voorhees Without His Mask
Image
Jason Voorhees has become synonymous with his iconic hockey mask, which has kept the "Friday the 13th" franchise in the public consciousness despite Jason having not appeared in an official, franchise capacity since the 2009 remake. It's the result of some legal issues between the franchise and the character's creators, but that dang hockey mask has guaranteed that just like the slasher villain who wears it, Jason Voorhees will never die. Hardcore horror fans know that the hockey mask didn't show up until "Friday the 13th Part III," but even more interesting is how Jason has been presented behind the mask or in a few instances, without it completely.

Jason Voorhees has been through it over the years. He's drowned (more than once), been struck in the head with an axe, impaled through the skull with his own machete, hacked to bits, chained to the bottom of a lake, taken a boat propeller to the throat,...

Sean S. Cunningham Regrets Not Filming Pee-Wee Hockey Scene in His Long-Forgotten Scrapped Friday the 13th Show
Image
The Friday the 13th (1980) franchise has had a tumultuous time for more that decade, with legal battles preventing any new movies or shows being made. While that seems to be coming to an end, the director of the original 1980 movie, Sean S. Cunningham has been remembering one of the Jason kills he never got to shoot when his own attempts at a TV show collapsed.

Currently, A24 and Peacock are teaming up to bring Friday the 13th to the small screen with Crystal Lake, although even that has been proving problematic in its own way. However, long before that show was given the green light, Cunningham worked on his own TV series, but that project was cut short, as the director recently explained at Silver Scream Con (via Bloody Disgusting).

Some time ago, the rights expired on the original script, so then there became doubt about who owns what after 35 years.

Bryan Fuller's Scripts for Scrapped Friday the 13th Series Were 'Among the Best' This Director Ever Read
Image
With today being Friday the 13th, fans are rewatching their favorite entries in the iconic horror movie franchise to celebrate the day. While some relive the past, others lament the many lost projects that didn't make it to screens. One recent scrapped project is Bryan Fuller's Friday the 13th prequel series Crystal Lake. Unfortunately for those already disappointed that the series was abandoned, one horror movie director has made things worse by calling the scripts for the series some of the best he had ever read.

Director Vincenzo Natali, best known for his work on films like The Cell and Splice, took to X/Twitter to share a little tease about Fuller's Crystal Lake series.. He also said, "The scripts for the first two episodes remain among the best I have ever read for any show." Natali has collaborated with Fuller before, directing five episodes of Hannibal and one for American Gods,...

Our Girls Friday: The Final Girls of the Friday the 13th Franchise [Friday the 13th Week]
Image
Presented by Paramount Scares, Friday the 13th Week sees Bloody Disgusting heading to Camp Crystal Lake for a series of features that celebrate the Voorhees family and their influence. Yesterday, Luiz H.C. took inventory of all the horror movie fans in horror similar to franchise hero Tommy Jarvis. Today, Jenn Adams celebrates the franchise’s final girls.

As long as there have been slashers, there’ve been final girls; the lone–traditionally female–survivor at the end of the film. Fans of the lovably formulaic sub-genre have strong opinions about which character originated the trope. From Lila and Jess to Sally and Laurie, we each have our favorites and will defend them tooth and nail.

Most slasher franchises become known for specific final girls who appear alongside iconic villains in multiple films, but Friday the 13th is the rare exception that proves the rule. Known for killing off heroines early in subsequent films,...

The Region Free 4K release of Friday the 13th Part II arrives October 7, 2024.

In director Steve Miner’s sequel, “Five years after the massacre at Camp Crystal Lake, the nerve-wracking legend of Jason Voorhees and his diabolical mother lives on. Despite ominous warnings from the locals to stay away from “Camp Blood,” a group of counselors at a nearby summer camp decide to explore the area where seven people were brutally slaughtered.”

Friday The 13th Pulled Off The Ultimate Magic Trick By Decapitating Pamela Voorhees
Image
Because the end of Sean Cunningham's 1980 slasher "Friday the 13th" deeply informed the many sequels that followed, revealing the film's climax will not necessarily be considered a spoiler. For those unfamiliar with "Friday the 13th" ... Well, first, I hope the cave you've been living in for the past 40 years has been comfortable, but second, you may want to avert your eyes.

Throughout "Friday the 13th," a group of randy New Jersey camp counselors are steadily picked off by a mysterious figure lurking in the shadows. It's implied that it's the ghost of Jason Voorhees, a kid who drowned at Camp Crystal Lake years earlier. Jason, the campfire story goes, was neglected by his counselors and mocked by the other campers. One night, Jason sunk into the lake when his would-be protectors snuck off to have sex. Now, years later, campers at Camp Crystal Lake are targeted by Jason's vengeful spirit.

The Real-Life Reason 'Friday the 13th's First Final Girl Died in the Sequel
Image
You don't need to have seen the first Friday the 13th film to know its killer twist. Just watch Scream, and you'll learn from Ghostface that it's not Jason Voorhees who was the killer in that movie, but his mother, Pamela (Betsy Palmer). Just because there's no guy in a hockey mask slashing teenagers doesn't mean that the original Friday the 13th isn't as good as the sequels. It still works and even features a fun early performance from Kevin Bacon, and a stellar final girl in the form of Alice Hardy (Adrienne King). Even though Alice survives the events of Camp Crystal Lake in a film that was a big success (it made nearly $40 million at the box office), she is quickly killed off by Jason in the very first scene of 1981's Friday the 13th Part 2. This wasn't done because of creative or salary issues. Instead, Adrienne...

Hey Mike Flanagan, Can You Save Friday The 13th Next?
Image
Flanagan's horror track record establishes him as the perfect candidate to revive the Friday the 13th franchise. His success in adapting classic horror novels showcases his ability to breathe new life into beloved horror stories. Flanagan's involvement with Stephen King projects makes him a busy director, but one can still hope for a Friday the 13th reboot.

Mike Flanagan's established history of hits in the horror genre makes it hard not to believe that only he can save the Friday the 13th franchise. While Mike Flanagan has been involved with filmmaking for over two decades, he did not garner mainstream attention until the early 2010s when he started directing full-feature films. He further rose in the ranks as a horror director when his movies like Hush and Gerald's Game started receiving wide acclaim from both viewers and critics.

After helming a line of successful horror movies, Flanagan dipped his...

A24 Reportedly Eyed Charlize Theron to Play Mrs. Voorhees in Friday the 13th Series
Image
The planned Friday the 13th prequel series from A24, Crystal Lake, has faced numerous problems getting off the ground. In early May, showrunners Bryan Fuller and Jim Danger Gray were fired, leaving the show in a state of flux. However, a new report has provided some more insights into what happened, and revealed that a top-tier talent was in the running for a prized role on the show.

According to a report from TheWrap, Charlize Theron was being sought after for the role of Pam Voorhees, Jason's murderous mother. While the Friday the 13th series is often associated with the hockey-mask wearing killer Jason, Mrs. Voorhees was the original psychotic slasher in Sean S. Cunningham's classic film. The role of Mrs. Voorhees in 1980's Friday the 13th, was played by Betsy Palmer. In 2009, the franchise received a reboot directed by Marcus Nispel, where Nana Visitor played the role of Jason's mother.

A new Friday the 13th film is unlikely to happen for at least another three years, says producer Sean S. Cunningham
Image
We've got some not-great news for fans of Friday the 13th, particularly those who are eager to see Jason Voorhees return to the big screen. According to Sean S. Cunningham, who directed the original 1980 film, another movie is still a few years off, at the earliest.

Cunningham was in attendance at the recent Texas Frightmare Weekend, where he reunited with special effects icon Tom Savini and Friday the 13th final girl Adrienne King. Per Creepy Catalog, the group got to talking about the franchise as a whole and Cunningham provided his input on the current state of the Friday the 13th movies.

Interestingly, Cunningham doesn't necessarily think the messy battle over the franchise's legal rights is the issue at hand. He believes that the current problem preventing a new Friday the 13th movie from coming to fruition comes down to budgetary restraints. It sounds like New Line Cinema, the current...

Original Friday the 13th Director Cuts Down Hopes of a New Jason Movie Coming Soon
Image
Sean S. Cunningham believes delays in any new Friday the 13th film due to studios being hesitant over potential returns. Legal disputes over franchise rights further complicate matters, stalling development despite initial hope. Cunningham, while optimistic about TV series and video game, predicts a new movie will not be in sight for at least 3 years.

Jason Voorhees has survived many things across several entries of the Friday the 13th franchise, but perhaps his biggest adversary has been a return to the big screen. 2009 was the last time the character stalked Camp Crystal Lake and since then the franchise was tied up in a legal dispute that put the series on hold until everything could be worked out. In 2023, director Sean S. Cunningham gave his blessing for a new Friday the 13th film, but nothing has come to fruition. Now, with news that the A24 TV series is seeking a new...

The Most Impossible Horror Movie Kills (and the Visual Effects Behind Them)
Image
As film-making technology advances, movies are capable of more now than ever before. Modern horror films are crawling with over-the-top gore and unbelievable deaths that are often brought to life through CGI. The horror genre, however, has always been a shining example of what movie magic is truly capable of. Even before all the technological advancements of today, horror looked realistic, gritty, and hard to swallow. That's thanks to special FX makeup, prosthetics, and other practical effects that go into bringing terrifying moments to life.

Today, there's a large divide between the use of CGI and practical effects. It's hard to argue that some films wouldn't be the same without the use of CGI. It's hard to imagine any of the Marvel Cinematic Universe movies without CGI, for example. That said, practical effects are still a surefire way to make sure something looks as realistic as possible. Many professionals still...

'Bloody Horrific': Scream's Kevin Williamson Praised Bryan Fuller's Scrapped Friday the 13th Prequel

The Friday the 13th prequel series from A24 called Crystal Lake got a grim update recently. However, Scream director Kevin Williamson had nothing but praise for Bryan Fuller's vision.

The series has been long in development, as it was first announced on Halloween in 2022. Crystal Lake was supposed to have the original Friday the 13th screenwriter Victor Miller, alongside Hannibal creator Bryan Fuller. Alice Hardy, the final girl from the first Friday the 13th film played by Adrienne King, would also be in the project. Mads Mikkelsen in Hannibal (2013)
“Crystal Lake”: Kevin Williamson and Bryan Fuller Planned an “Hour Long Chase Episode”
Mads Mikkelsen in Hannibal (2013)
We learned earlier this week that “Hannibal” creator Bryan Fuller is no longer the showrunner of A24 and Peacock’s Friday the 13th TV series “Crystal Lake,” with A24 choosing to “go a different way with the material.” What does that mean? It means A24 is still planning on bringing a Friday the 13th series to life, but the overall vision will likely change.

Kevin Williamson (Scream, Sick) had been on board to write an episode of the “Crystal Lake” series, and Williamson took to Twitter today to tease some of those original plans.

Williamson writes, “Bummin’ hard, so sorry I won’t be a part of what would have been an epic Bryan Fuller show. Your pilot was so beautifully realized. A gorgeous portrait of a mother unraveling in her grief. Not to mention bloody horrific!”

He adds, “I was so looking forward to our hour long chase episode!

Kevin Bacon & Family Recreate His Friday the 13th Death Scene
Image
Kevin Bacon commemorated 44 years of Friday the 13th by recreating his iconic death scene in a hilarious video with his family. Bacon's role in the horror slasher was punctuated by a gruesome death while enjoying some pot, paving the way for his successful career. Despite the Friday the 13th prequel series Crystal Lake facing setbacks, fans are eagerly awaiting more content set in the Jason Voorhees universe.

On May 9, 1980, the world was first introduced to a group of unwitting camp counselors getting picked off one-by-one by a mysterious killer in Friday the 13th, and the horror genre has never been the same since. One of those camp counselors just happened to be an up-and-coming young actor by the name of Kevin Bacon, who was fresh off the success of appearing in National Lampoons Animal House. His death in the horror slasher is still remembered to this day, and to celebrate 44 years of Friday the 13th,...

Bryan Fuller Breaks Silence on Crystal Lake Cancelation Rumors, Addresses Friday 13th Prequel Future
Image
Bryan Fuller confirms Crystal Lake series alive at Peacock but faces new direction without him as showrunner. Series planned to explore the origin of Camp Crystal Lake and Jason Voorhees, but production now takes a different approach.

Bryan Fuller has shared an update on the Friday the 13th prequel series Crystal Lake, which was reported to have been canceled by A24. Despite the rumors shared by Jeff Sneider in his The Insneider newsletter, the series is very much still alive at Peacock but without Fuller as showrunner with the production team deciding to take a different approach to the one suggested by the Hannibal creator.

Peacock originally greenlit Crystal Lake as a straight-to-series order in October 2022, aiming to delve into the origins of the infamous Camp Crystal Lake before it became the setting for Jason Voorhees many killing sprees. With the rights to the Friday the 13th franchise in a tangled mess,...

Bryan Fuller Exits ‘Friday The 13th’ Prequel Series; Search For New Showrunner Underway
Image
Peacock and A24 will be proceeding with a new showrunner for the Friday the 13th prequel series.

Bryan Fuller confirmed today on social media that he is exiting the series.

“For reasons beyond our control, A24 has elected to go a different way with the material,” Fuller wrote. “We hope the final product will be something Friday the 13th fans all over the world will enjoy.”

You can see Fuller’s entire message below.

As we previously reported, Fuller’s prequel series, titled Crystal Lake, had scored a straight-to-series order at Peacock in 2022, with A24 as the studio. Fuller was to serve as writer, executive producer and showrunner, with Victor Miller, who wrote the original screenplay of the 1980 movie, Marc Toberoff, Miller’s copyright attorney, and Rob Barsamian, who produced the original movie, also exec producing.

The original Friday the 13th movie, which starred Betsy Palmer, Adrienne King, Laurie Bartram and Kevin Bacon,...

Crystal Lake: A24 going a “different way” with the Friday the 13th prequel series as Bryan Fuller may no longer be involved
Image
It’s been quite a week for Crystal Lake, the Friday the 13th prequel series which has been in development from Hannibal‘s Bryan Fuller. Initial reports stated that A24 had pulled the plug on the project, but a subsequent report claimed it was still alive, just undergoing a “retooling.” Bryan Fuller has now taken to Instagram to address what’s going on with the series, and unfortunately, it sounds like he’s no longer involved.

“Adapting classic horror is something I have some experience with,” Fuller wrote. “These shows require a vision that elevates and transforms, as well as delivers what audiences have come to expect, which is an ambitious and risky endeavor. It requires people to take the leap with me.“

Fuller continued: “When it works, as with Hannibal, the results can be powerful for the storytellers and the audience.

“Crystal Lake” Update: A24 Going a “Different Way” with the ‘Friday the 13th’ TV Series
Bryan Fuller in Dead Like Me (2003)
This week has brought a lot of confusion about “Crystal Lake,” A24, Peacock and Bryan Fuller’s (“Hannibal”) television series expansion of the Friday the 13th franchise. While reports and rumors spread about A24 pulling the plug on the series, we told you on Monday that that’s not exactly the case. Rather, the project is being retooled behind the scenes.

So what exactly is going on here? Bryan Fuller has taken to Instagram tonight to provide an update. The bad news? Fuller is no longer involved with the “Crystal Lake” series.

The good news? That doesn’t mean A24 is giving up hope on the project.

Fuller writes on Instagram, “Adapting classic horror is something I have some experience with. These shows require a vision that elevates and transforms, as well as delivers what audiences have come to expect, which is an ambitious and risky endeavor. It requires people...

'Beyond Our Control': Bryan Fuller Confirms Exit From A24's Friday the 13th Series
Image
Whatever's happening with the Friday the 13th prequel series, Bryan Fuller will no longer be a part of the project moving forward. Following conflicting reports about whether the project had been canceled, Fuller has confirmed that he's now off the project due to A24 wanting to go in a different direction.

"Adapting classic horror is something I have some experience with," Fuller said in a post on X, including a Gif of the Friday the 13th logo. "These shows require a vision that elevates and transforms, as well as delivers what audiences have come to expect, which is an ambitious and risky endeavor. It requires people to take the leap with me."

Friday the 13th Prequel Series Gets Promising Update Following Cancellation Reports
Image
Despite reports to the contrary, Crystal Lake has not been scrapped at Peacock. A24 is simply going in a new direction with the Friday the 13th prequel series.

Earlier this week, film industry reporter Jeff Sneider shared in his newsletter, The InSneider, that A24 had quietly "pulled the plug on Crystal Lake," although he noted that it was "unclear whether this is a permanent decision or a temporary one." However, according to Bloody Disgusting's sources, Crystal Lake has not been shelved and is still happening at the streamer. The report goes on to state that the Friday the 13th prequel series is receiving "some retooling" behind the scenes, which is likely why there haven't been any official updates on the project in some time.

Friday The 13th Prequel Show Update Suggests The Franchise Might Actually Be Cursed
Image
Crystal Lake's "retooling" indicates significant issues with the prequel show. Past problems in the Friday the 13th franchise halt production and threaten recovery. Despite the challenges, a strong production team provides a glimmer of hope for Crystal Lake's future.

In 2022, A24 and Peacock announced that they would be teaming up to produce Crystal Lake, a Friday the 13th television series, but the latest update on the show is concerning. Despite being one of the most well-known franchises in horror, it's been 15 years since a new Friday the 13th film was released. This makes the franchise overdue for a continuation. A24 and Peacock have both had massive success in the horror genre, making them perfect choices to bring this iconic series back from the dead. However, it seems like Crystal Lake's production is facing some major issues.

The series is reported to be a prequel to the original Friday the 13th.

Update: A24 taking machete to Crystal Lake series?
Image
Update: According to the good folks at Bloody Disgusting, the plug hasn’t officially been pulled on the series, although it is undergoing “re-tooling.” They note that they have inside sources confirming as much. Certainly, if A24 isn’t going forward with the show, news will break through official channels sooner or later, so stay tuned!

Original Post: A24 may be looking to ki-ki-ki Friday the 13th, as their planned series, Crystal Lake, seems to be treading water. Come on, A24, you were supposed to be paying attention to Jason!

As per Jeff Sneider of The InSneider, “I’m hearing that A24 has pulled the plug on Crystal Lake, its planned Peacock series based on the Friday the 13th franchise featuring masked killer Jason Voorhees. Bryan Fuller was due to executive produce the horror series. It’s unclear whether this is a permanent decision or a temporary one, as A24 had no comment.

Peacock's Friday the 13th Prequel Series Gets Grim Update
Image
It's not looking good for Crystal Lake. The Friday the 13th prequel series from A24 that had been in the works at Peacock has reportedly been squashed.

According to film industry reporter Jeff Sneider of The InSneider, A24 has quietly "pulled the plug on Crystal Lake." A24 did not offer a comment on the report, though Sneider noted that it's "unclear whether this is a permanent decision or a temporary one." That might mean that the series has been postponed for the time being but could later be put back into production. Executive producer Bryan Fuller, who is very active on social media, has yet to publicly comment on the report.

“Crystal Lake” – A24 Has Not Pulled the Plug on Their ‘Friday the 13th’ TV Series [Exclusive]
Image
Can you believe it’s now been 15 Years since we last saw Jason Voorhees on the screen? In the wake of several years’ worth of legal troubles, the Voorhees family was finally set to return in a new Friday the 13th television series from A24, Peacock and Bryan Fuller (“Hannibal”) titled “Crystal Lake,” but a report this week has cast doubt on the show happening at all.

Jeff Sneider reported in his newsletter The Insneider late last night that A24 has “pulled the plug” on the “Crystal Lake” series, which was due to begin filming sometime this year.

Sneider writes in last night’s exclusive report, “It’s unclear whether this is a permanent decision or a temporary one, as A24 had no comment. Perhaps Peacock will help the trades shed more light on this project, which was announced back in 2022.”

According to Bloody Disgusting’s sources, A24 has Not...

A24 Reportedly Pulls the Plug on Friday the 13th Prequel Series Crystal Lake
Image
A24 has reportedly canceled the Crystal Lake TV series based on Friday the 13th, leaving fans disappointed and uncertain about its future. Production updates have been scarce, with speculation about a prequel concept that may have included modern elements from the franchise. Bryan Fuller's involvement and potential inspiration from past Friday the 13th films added intrigue to the Crystal Lake project, now probably shelved.

It's a sad day for horror fans who have been eagerly awaiting more content from the Friday the 13th franchise, as reports are coming out that A24 has pulled the plug on its long awaited television project, Crystal Lake. First announced in late 2022, the prequel series was expected to premiere in late 2024/2025 on Peacock, and feature original final girl Adrienne King returning to Camp Blood where it all started, but now it seems as if Jason Voorhees is once again dead in the water. Wild Friday The 13th Theory Puts A Tragic Twist On Jason Voorhees' Slasher Legacy
Image
A theory suggests Pamela Voorhees was trying to bring Jason back to life through a ritual. This connects to the theory about Jason Voorhees possibly being a deadite connected to The Evil Dead. The theory makes Jason's legacy even more tragic as he killed to try to resurrect his mother.

Friday the 13th introduced one of the most famous slashers in the horror genre through Jason Voorhees, and one theory gives an extra tragic twist to his legacy. Back in 1980, Friday the 13th arrived to continue developing and popularizing the slasher genre. Directed by Sean S. Cunningham and written by Victor Miller, Friday the 13th took the audience to Camp Crystal Lake, which had just reopened. Unfortunately, the young counselors began to be stalked by a mysterious killer who murdered them one by one.

The counselors had heard the legend of Jason Voorhees, a young boy who drowned in Camp...

Friday The 13th Can't Miss The Best Possible Release Date For The Camp Crystal Lake Show
Image
A24's Crystal Lake prequel will finally revive the Friday the 13th franchise after a long hiatus due to legal issues. Crystal Lake will provide a deeper look into the origins of iconic characters like Pamela Voorhees and young Jason. Targeting a 2025 release on Friday, June 13th could increase interest in the show and connect with new horror fans.

Friday the 13th is set to return in the form of a prequel show titled Crystal Lake, and the series has the perfect release date to target. It has now been 15 years since a Friday the 13th movie released, with the 2009 film serving as a reboot that put a fresh spin on the first four movies in the franchise. Any movie continuation of the Friday the 13th franchise hasn't come to fruition since 2009 due to confusing studio rights and lawsuits over the original movie's screenplay and Jason Voorhees character ownership. That said,...

Crystal Lake: Friday the 13th series might start filming this summer
Image
Fourteen and a half months have gone by since it was announced that original Friday the 13th screenwriter Victor Miller – fresh off winning the U.S. copyright to the 1980 film after a lawsuit that stretched on for years – was teaming up with his lawyer Marc Toberoff, franchise rights holder Rob Barsamian, production company A24, the Peacock streaming service, and showrunner Bryan Fuller (whose credits include Hannibal and Pushing Daisies) to develop a new Friday the 13th streaming series called Crystal Lake. There haven’t been many updates since then… which isn’t surprising to fans of the Friday the 13th franchise, because we’ve gotten used to not getting any new content. But Crystal Lake might actually make it into production soon! Fridaythe13thFranchise.com reports that the show was once expected to start filming in March of 2024, but due to the writers and actors strikes that brought most projects...

Monopoly Movie Adaptation Still In Development (Despite 4 Years Of Silence)
Image
The Monopoly movie adaptation has been in development for over a decade, switching studios and directors multiple times. Lionsgate recently confirmed that Monopoly is still in development after acquiring the global content platform eOne from Hasbro. It remains unclear if Tim Story and Kevin Hart are still involved in the project, but Lionsgate is eager to move forward in the wake of Mattel's success with Barbie.

The Monopoly movie adaptation is still in development at Lionsgate despite a lack of updates over the past four years. The project has actually been in development hell for over a decade now, having first been announced in 2008 that an adaptation was in the works at Universal Pictures. While it switched studios and directors several times, by 2019, an exciting update arrived that Kevin Hart would star in the movie, reuniting him with Think Like a Man and Ride Along director Tim Story. After that update,...

Bill Burr on Friday the 13th and why he stopped watching horror movies

That’s why it caught our attention when YouTuber James Whale Bake Sale made a video to go with a clip from Burr’s podcast Monday Morning Podcast in which the comedian discusses the horror classic Friday the 13th – and goes on to explain why he stopped watching horror movies.

The video can be seen at the bottom of this article, and over the course of its five minutes he admits that the final jump scare in Friday the 13th really did scare the hell out of him, says that the franchise...

Crystal Lake: Questions We Can't Wait to See Answered in the Friday the 13th Prequel Series
Image
If you weren't already aware, the Friday the 13th franchise has been in dire straits for over a decade. Legal battles over the ownership of Jason Voorhees have plagued future projects from getting off the ground. Waning desire to see the machete-wielding maniac set in as a result, locking the franchise in perpetual purgatory. Thanks, however, to the combined efforts of Bryan Fuller, Vince Miller, and production studio A24, we will finally be returning to the world of Friday the 13th once more in the upcoming pseudo-prequel Crystal Lake.

The change in format and the lengthy period between installments have more than justified the need for a refresh from the typical terrorized campground. While Bryan Fuller has revealed some details about the upcoming Crystal Lake, most of what the show will be about is still tightly under wraps. Knowing how fast and loose Friday the 13th has been with its...

Charlie Hofheimer in The Mandela Effect (2019)
Celebrating the Best ‘Friday the 13th’ Film With Ginny and ‘Part 2’ [Horror Queers Podcast]
Charlie Hofheimer in The Mandela Effect (2019)
The Mandela Effect.

After dedicating an entire month to Erotic Thrillers like Bound and Stranger by the Lake, October has been blissfully fun and silly. Last week, we celebrated our 250th (!!!) episode last week with Tim Burton’s Sleepy Hollow. This week we paid homage to Jason Voorhees with a look at one of Friday the 13th title: Part 2!

In the sequel to Sean S. Cunningham‘s game changer, poor Alice (Adrienne King) is brutally killed off immediately. After a five-year-jump, a new group of horny counsellors prepare to open Camp Blood. These red shirts include iconic Final Girl Ginny (Amy Steel), her sad sack boyfriend Paul (John Furey), as well as hot and fit Terry (Kirsten Baker) and pervy Scott (Russell Todd). And then there’s poor sweet Vickie (Lauren-Marie Taylor) and disabled Mark (Tom McBride).

What these new twenty-somethings don’t realize that Jason Voorhees (Steve Dash and...

Friday The 13th's Betsy Palmer Invented Her Own Dark Backstory For Mrs. Voorhees
Image
"Friday the 13th" wasn't originally intended to go on to manifest multiple murderous sequels featuring Jason Voorhees as a machete-wielding madman. The famed hockey mask didn't even make it into the films until "Friday the 13th Part III." No, the initial killing spree at Camp Crystal Lake was carried out by Jason's mother, Mrs. Pamela Voorhees, played by the illustrious Betsy Palmer.

Rather famously, Palmer wasn't exactly thrilled initially to be participating in a fairly low-rent horror film surrounded by young, up-and-coming starlets whose acting experience paled in comparison to her rather impressive filmography dating back to the Golden Age of television during the early '50s. The budget for the first "Friday the 13th" didn't really allow for a big marquee name, and Palmer wasn't even the first choice to play the role. Oscar winners Shelley Winters and Estelle Parsons were approached before Palmer eventually accepted the part after...
