In Shoojit Sircar’s Piku, Amitabh Bachchan played a very cranky patriarch who is obsessed with his bowel movements. The film, which was released in 2015, also starred Deepika Padukone and Irrfan Khan.
Speaking on the rotund Bengali bhadralok’s part, Mr Bachchan had said, “I have no known reference, neither was I given one. This is the writer’s and the director’s image of what the character should be. As an actor employed by the production, I follow what is professionally desired of me.”
This is the second film where Deepika Padukone played Mr Bachchan’s daughter. Mr Bachchan remarked, “As co-artists, we do develop or aim to develop the kind of relationship the script demands. In that sense, there is, and I would imagine should be, a so-called ‘bonding’ between us. In our profession, I would expect that whatever we do in the sphere of the film in question is special.

Director Tigmanshu Dhulia reflects on 21 years Of his crime drama Charas, what it was like working with the late Irrfan Khan and also reveals what is coming next in this special conversation with Subhash K Jha.
Your sophomore film Charas was not as well received as your first film Haasil. Was that a disappointment?
It was twenty-one years ago, my second film Charas got released. Expectations were high. But it did not come close to the kind of admiration my debut film Haasil received.
Was Charas a challenge to make?
I loved making it. Visually it is one of my best works because the canvas was enormous. I think it was ahead of its time. The plot was too thick and twisted many just did not get it. It happens when the filmmaker is trying too hard and feeling superior to his audience. My bad.

Irrfan Khan was was hoping to play Jawaharlal Nehru in Joe Wright’s Indian Summer, is undeterred by the fact that he looks nothing like India’s first prime minister and says he can pull off the role convincingly.
He told me, “I’ll turn myself into the character through my attitude. When I was just out of the Nsd (National School of Drama) I had played Lenin at the age of 21. It made me realise my potential and direction as an actor. Since Lenin, I’ve played other biographical characters. I’m playing another real-life character, Pan Singh Tomar. “Haider” (2014) stands as Vishal Bhardwaj’s crowning achievement—a film that transcends its identity as a mere Shakespearean adaptation to become a searing political commentary, a visual poem, and a profound meditation on the human condition within a conflict zone. Released in 2014 as the culmination of Bhardwaj’s Shakespearean trilogy following “Maqbool” (Macbeth) and “Omkara” (Othello), “Haider” transplants the Danish tragedy of “Hamlet” to the war-torn valley of Kashmir during the turbulent 1990s.
What sets “Haider” apart from typical adaptations is the way Bhardwaj skillfully interlaces Hamlet’s existential crises with the intricate socio-political landscape of Kashmir. The movie serves as a lens through which audiences study issues of betrayal, vengeance, political repression, and fragmentation of identity amid collective trauma. With haunting imagery, subtle performances, and a bold screenplay, “Haider” poses uncomfortable questions regarding state power, insurgency, disappearances, and the cost of pursuing truth in a world shrouded in deceit.

I am with the film because we all are working women, we all multi-task, we all try and balance our lives between our work, our relationships, our families, friends, social obligations, trying to find time for ourselves; there is so much that a woman does. I think a woman always multi-tasks beautifully.

Irrfan Khan Turned Down 2 Hollywood Movies (Photo Credit – Wikipedia/Instagram)
Not many Indian actors get the chance to work with big-shot Hollywood filmmakers in massively mounted movies. On the contrary, late actor Irrfan Khan, known for his nuanced performances across the globe, was not only offered two films helmed by veteran director Ridley Scott, but he also turned down both of them. Scroll down to know the names of these films and why the actor rejected them.
Body of Lies (Release Year – 2008)
The first Ridley Scott movie that Irrfan Khan turned down was the action thriller ‘Body of Lies’. Had Irrfan Khan been in the film, he would have shared screen space with two seasoned Hollywood actors, Russell Crowe and Leonardo DiCaprio. As per a report published in Times of India, the ‘Paan Singh Tomar’ actor reportedly turned it down because it simply didn’t work out. The role was eventually essayed by Mark Strong.

In one of the more poignant moments of “Logout,” Zee5’s latest original starring Babil Khan, the protagonist earnestly proclaims that online social media is not a mere distraction for many. It is a world in itself. What “Logout” proceeds to tacitly depict under the garb of a genre film is that the same world is not all sunshine and rainbows, so to speak. It has pitfalls and fate’s cruel hands that act as a twisted leveler. Just like the real, physical world. Directed by Amit Golani and written by Biswapati Sarkar, “Logout” attempts to cram most of the perils of the modern online world. A little too much perhaps; yet it remains an engrossing watch with a commendable leading performance.
Babil Khan plays Pratyush Dua, known as ‘Pratman’ online, a social media influencer who rose to popularity via his “Laila-Majnu” skits, where he plays both characters. With a...

Did you know that when Thank You did not do well, star Irrfan Khan was heartbroken? — In this edition of This Day That Year, Subhash K Jha takes a look back at the Anees Bazmee directed film released in 2011,
Anees Bazmee’s unsuccessful comedy Thank You, released on April 8, 2011, featured Irrfan Khan along with Akshay Kumar and Bobby Deol as guys out to have fun at their wives’ expense.
The film was a huge flop, a rarity in Bazmee’s career. But Irrfan was happy the film gave him a chance to dance alongside Akshay Kumar.
Men, we are told in this thankless comedy, are dogs. They cheat on their wives. And have themselves the time of their lives. And the wives, poor creatures, are so devoted to their spouses they observe the Karva Chauth for their pati-devils even when they have no reason to do so. Such devotion in show motion.

The dark comedy, Blackmail directed by Abhinay Deo and starring Irrfan Khan was a released 7 years ago. The director talks with Subhash K Jha about the comedy, working with actor par excellence Irrfan, and his thoughts on making a sequel.
How do you look back on Blackmail?
Blackmail was and will always be a special film for me. It was my only film with an actor par excellence who no longer is with us …Irrfan. It was my second film in the genre I love the most, after Delhi Belly: Dark Comedy.
Irrfan fell ill during the making?
Towards the end of the making, he had started feeling unwell, and he wasn’t himself when we were shooting the promotional video. Throughout the promotion of the film, he was unavailable, but he was suffering and fighting, perhaps what was the biggest battle of his life .
Did you meet him after he fell ill?...

In this edition of This Day That Year — Subhash K Jha looks back at Irrfan Khan’s 2017 film Blackmail, directed by Abhinay Deo. The director also takes us inside that unique dance sequence. Read On!
Abhinay Deo’s Blackmail is a virgin territory in the comedy genre. It is heady and hedonistic, cocky and compelling in the way the comedies of Hrishikesh Mukherjee and Basu Chatterjee used to be. If only these veterans could see the sexiness that underlines all gender wars. Blackmail is a closeted Hrishikesh Mukherjee comedy with oodles of extra voluptuousness.
In the strikingly shot (by cinematographer Jay Oza) opening, we see Irrfan struggling to stay afloat through his office hours, fighting shy of going home because the spark has gone from his marriage and wife who watches cheesy song sequences on television to while away her time. Actually, it was never there, the spark, I mean.

2020 was especially cruel to our entertainment industry. One by one, we lost Irrfan Khan, Rishi Kapoor, (music composer) Wajid Khan, Basu Chatterjee, Sushant Singh Rajput, Saroj Khan, Jagdeep, S. P Balasubramaniam, Soumitra Chatterjee, and Nishikant Kamat.
Nishikant Kamat’s going; I took it personally. Though I had never met him, we shared a certain bonding. Whenever he called, he would speak in that soft, respectful voice and tell me that I should not mind if he doesn’t respond to my messages immediately as he travelled a lot.
I first reached out to Nishikant after I saw his directorial debut, that exceptional Marathi film Dombivali West in 2005, which was quickly remade into Tamil as Evano Oruvan with Madhavan in the lead. Nishikant quickly became a successful director in Bollywood. But he hardly had any friends in the Mumbai film industry except John Abraham, with whom he did the successful Force and Rocky Handsome.

Subhash K Jha, in a new feature in his Thus Day That Year series revisits Neeraj Pathak’s Irrfan Khan and Sunny Deol thriller, Right Yaaa Wrong.
Right Yaa Wrong was the surprise shocker of 2010. If you’ve forgotten that jump-out-of-the-seat feeling, then it’s time to nudge it to awake again. Debutant director Neeraj Pathak put together a thriller that’s as much a homage to Alfred Hitchcock and Brian da Palma as our own Abbas-Mustan and Right Yaa Wrong still emerges original and strong.
An intricate jigsaw that always stays a step ahead of the audience, Right Yaaa Wrong makes a penetrating comment on how the country’s legal system can be subverted in a clever hand. More importantly, the taut and briskly-paced script suggests that the yin and yang concepts of right and wrong are not only ambivalent but also interchangeable when the context is right.

If Richard Attenborough is the face of Mahatma Gandhi then thank God, Irrfan has given a face to that unsung hero… a certain Tomar who abandoned sports for banditry. A sure-shot National award for Irrfan Khan as the disgraced athlete who turns into a Bandit King, yes? Who can snatch away Irrfan’s moment of glory? Except maybe politics. Irrfan’s body language as a sprinter, his expressions of anguish and anger at being treated with scant respect by a society he brought international honour to, were so dead-on as to elicit instant comparisons with the best biographical performances of all times. Paan Singh Tomar is right up there with Robert Downey Jr’s Chaplin. Director Tigmanshu Dhulia’s earlier films were discernibly disabled by budgetary constraints. Here, he assembled Tomar’s story with a finesse which flirted with infinity.

Subhash K Jha revisits Vishal Bhardwaj’s 7 Khoon Maaf in this cool feature. As a bonus, we hear from star Priyanka Chopra about the making of the dark film that released in 2011.
How do we make sense of a woman who’s an incorrigible potentially-loathsome serial spouse-killer who, when challenged about her weird passion for changing husbands by divine decree rather than the law of the land, turns around and says, “This heart of mine, it’s to blame.” Wicked laughter follows. And dammit, we are amused!
How the flock–and I do mean the flock of fumigated husbands–does one make head or ‘tale’ of such a woman? Well, the first thing a director with a canny sense and sensibility does is sign Priyanka Chopra to play the wretchedly unfulfilled, genetically incomplete woman, a living, throbbing warning against the institution of marriage! Gunday is a kitschy pseudo-historical depiction of Bangladeshi migrants in Kolkata post the 1971 Bangladeshi war of liberation. Two boys, Bikram and Bala, crawl across the border into Kolkata and become some kind of messianic outlaws. The film glorifies a life of crime to a level of embarrassing exultation until we see the two ‘heroes’(ha ha) constantly on the run from the ‘the law’(as represented by the insanely sane and sensible Irrfan Khan).
But Bikram and Bala, who grow up to be two blobs of brainless brawn played by Ranveer Singh and Arjun Kapoor, are no ordinary criminals on the run. They run in slow-motion, sometimes shirtless, most of the time brainless, their biceps and six-packs glistening in hairless glory. They are the Milkha Singhs of the internet generation, meant to eulogize wanton materialism by flaunting their physicality without inhibition or reservation.
They are the greedy generation from before greed was invented.

What does Nawazuddin Siddiqui think about comparisons with Irrfan Khan? (Photo Credit – Wikipedia)
Nawazuddin Siddiqui is a name that resonates with brilliance in Indian cinema. His journey from humble beginnings to becoming one of the finest actors of his generation is nothing short of inspiring.
Time and again, the praiseworthy words have been equated with Nawazuddin and late Irrfan Khan, another magnificent film actor. However, Nawazuddin would always say his difference. He has said it one time too many, “Mein aapne jaise kaam karne ko aya hu, mein kissi ke jaisa kaam karne ko nahi aya hu. Of course, woh great actor hein, lekin mujhe apni pehchan banani hai.” One can see clearly in the quote his effort to distinguish himself from the line of artists whom he admires.

From Vishal Bhardwaj’s Shakespearean trilogy Maqbool (based on Hamlet), Omkara (Othello) and Haider (Hamlet), Maqbool is the rawest, most honest and untarnished adaptation.
Maqbool transports us to a threshold of pain and redemption hitherto unknown to Hindi cinema. Because this is Shakespeare’s Macbeth trans-located to Mumbai’s underworld, and because Bhardwaj has selected a dream cast to portray his nightmarish world of crime and retribution, Maqbool takes its emotional content beyond any other film from the genre.
The writing on the wall is so clear, coherent, and redemptive that even Shakespeare would smile indulgently at the artistic liberties Bhardwaj has taken with the original text. Maqbool opens a whole new universe of passion- play, unexplored in the original text. Bhardwaj reveals the politics of lust and passion with a sure-handedness seldom witnessed in Hindi cinema.

Why Did Abhishek Bachchan Calls Actors “Well-Paid, Pampered Puppets?” ( Photo Credit – Instagram )
Abhishek Bachchan is a prominent name in Indian cinema, and much of this is due to his versatility and grounded personality. The son of legendary actors Amitabh and Jaya Bachchan, he carved a niche in the tinsel town with movies like Guru, Yuva, and Dhoom. Aamir Khan on what went wrong with Lal Singh Chaddha ( Photo Credit – Instagram )
Aamir Khan remade the Hollywood blockbuster Forrest Gump in Hindi. The film is called Lal Singh Chaddha. Kareena Kapoor Khan played the female lead, and Naag Chaitanya Akkineni was also in a particular role. However, the film failed at the box office, and Aamir decoded the reason behind its failure in a recent interview.
“When a film goes wrong, you try and understand what went wrong. When I sat down and thought about it, I felt like Forrest Gump, as a piece of writing, does not necessarily fall into the rules. The film does not follow the mainstream writing rules. The premise is the question which gives answers for you,” The iconic actor said.
“The story moves episodically. It is not streamlined in that sense. And your main plot gets over, and the film continues for 15-20 minutes afterward.
