Was featured in Lincoln Center Theatre's Summer 1998 production of Shakespeare's Twelfth Night, opposite Helen Hunt and Kyra Sedgwick. Brilliantly combined comic acting, singing, mandolin and percussion playing and dancing as Feste, the Jester.

Has built a formidable career on stage performing on and off-Broadway, in addition to his extensive film credits. On New York stage since 1974. On film since 1979's "The Warriors."

Starred in the world premeire of "Pearls For Pigs" at The Hartford Stage.

Off-Broadway credits include: Orphan of Zhao, Ghosts, Marlowe, Lobster Alice, Anadarko, Pearls for Pigs, Henry VI, Arturo Ui, The Cure, Film is Evil - Radio is Good, The Mind King, and Genesis. Other theatre credits include the title roles in Woyzeck and Tartuffe, Seascape, and Tooth of Crime (Hartford Stage Company), The Tempest (American Conservatory Theatre), Iphigenia (Huntington Theatre), Simone Machard and Romeo and Juliet (La Jolla Playhouse).

(2003, November - December) Appeared as The Widow/The Doctor in the Charles L. Mee Jr. play "Snow in June" produced by the American Repertory Theatre at the Loeb Drama Center, Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA.

(April 2006) Plays Paul in "Festen" play by David Eldridge based on the Dogme film and play by Thomas Vinterberg, Mogens Rukov and Bo Hr. Hansen (Music Box Theatre, New York City, New York, USA).

Has released a CD of his original music entitled 'David Patrick Kelly: Rip Van Boy Man'.

Summer, 1983, La Jolla Playhouse: appeared in Bertolt Brecht's "The Visions of Simone Machard", directed by Peter Sellars, Berrie Keefe's "A Mad World, My Masters" with Werner Klemperer, directed by Des McAnuff, and as Tybalt in William Shakespeare's "Romeo & Juliet", starring Amanda Plummer, also directed by McAnuff.

(January 6, 1978) He acted in Studs Terkel's musical, "Working," at the Goodman Theatre in Chicago, Illinois with Rex Everhart, Jay Flash Riley, Joe Ponazzeck, Jo Henderson, and Jay Footlik in the cast. Stephen Schwartz was director and adapter. Micki Grant composed music and lyrics. James Taylor composed the Millwork song. Craig Carnelia composed other songs. David Mitchell was scenic designer. Marjorie Slaim was costume designer.

(April 19, 2007 to May 20, 2007) He played Pantalone in the musical, "The Glorious One," at the Public Theater in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania with Natalie Venetia Belcon (Columbina); John Kassir (Dottor); Jenny Powers (Isabella Andreini); Pat Schoeffler (Flamino Scala); Julyana Soeliysto (Amanda Ragusa); and Jeremy Webb (Francesco Andreini) in the cast. Lynn Ahrens wrote the book and lyrics. Stephen Flaherty wrote the music. Francine Prose wrote the novel. Graciela Daniele was director and choreographer. Tom Murray was music director. Michael Starobin was orchestra arranger. Daniel Ostling was scenic designer. Mara Blumenfeld was costume designer. Stephen Strawbridge was lighting designer. Zach Moore was sound designer.
