When talking up its new lineup Sunday during a press conference, Fox Entertainment President Michael Thorn said Fox “went all in on two shows last season, Hi-Surf and Doc but the former show from John Wells “just didn’t catch on like we had hoped.” The series that follows the personal and professional lives of the heavy-water lifeguards who patrol and protect the North Shore of O’ahu averaged 2.98M this season.

“We love our partnership with John Wells and Warner Brothers and hope to do more with John and are doing more with Warner Brothers, but it just didn’t resonate with our audience the way we needed to be able to return it,” he continued.

As the May upfronts loom, Fox has cancelled the Hawaii-set lifeguard drama Rescue: Hi-Surf from John Wells after one season, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.

The freshman drama followed a group of heavy-water lifeguards along the north shore of Oahu and came from writer Matt Kester (Animal Kingdom). Warner Bros. Television, Wells’ long-time studio home, produced the series along with Fox Entertainment.

In 2023, Fox gave a straight-to-series order to Rescue: Hi-Surf for its 2023-24 lineup, with Wells to executive produce and direct the first two episodes. The life-and-death stakes series starred Zoe Cipres, The White Lotus’s Kekoa Kekumano, Arielle Kebbel, Robbie Magasiva, Adam Demos and Alex Aiono.

The hourlong series chronicled the dramatic rescues and interpersonal dramas of a team of first responders working a particularly dangerous stretch of Oahu’s North Shore. Kester served as showrunner for the series and executive produced with Wells and Erin Jontow of John Wells Productions.

Fox has canceled the drama series “Rescue Hi-Surf,” Variety has confirmed.

The series aired for just one season at the broadcast network, which debuted in September. The season finale which aired in March will now serve as the series finale. The show was originally developed at Max (then HBO Max) before it was picked up to series by Fox in 2023.

News of the cancellation comes one week ahead of Fox’s presentation to advertisers at their annual upfront presentation in New York.

The official logline for “Rescue Hi-Surf” stated that it “follows the personal and professional lives of the heavy-water lifeguards who patrol and protect the North Shore of O’ahu—the most famous and dangerous stretch of coastline in the world. Each episode will feature these dedicated, heroic, and adrenaline-seeking first-responders saving lives in the difficult and often life-threatening conditions of Hawaii’s Seven Mile Miracle.”

It’s low tide for Rescue Hi-Surf as Fox has opted not to renew the freshman drama from producer John Wells for a second season. The news will come as a blow to diehard fans of the Hawaiian lifeguard series who have been showing their support by voting en masse in various Save the Show polls where Rescue Hi-Surf has been ranking high. There are no plans for the show to be shopped by producing studio Warner Bros. Television, sources said.

The cancellation comes more than a month after Rescue Hi-Surf‘s Season 1 finale, which aired March 31, and a year after Fox revealed its big expectations for the series last spring — giving it a very early seven-episode back order and assigning it the post-Super Bowl slot. Lionsgate and Kingdom Story Company’s I Can Only Imagine 2 is moving from March 20, 2026 to Feb. 20, 2026. Currently, the faith-based sequel is the only wide release on its new weekend.

The faith-based film continues the inspirational true story of Bart Millard (John Finley), the lead singer of the Christian band MercyMe. The movie is being shot in Nashville.

Pic also stars Milo Ventimiglia, Arielle Kebbel, Joshua Bassett, Sophie Skelton, Sammy Dell and returning cast members Trace Adkins and Dennis Quaid.

Fans noticed clues in Paevey’s recent Instagram posts that he could make a return to Hallmark. He’s attending a fan event this year. He was listed on a flyer for “A Small Town Christmas” in Dahlonega, Georgia. The event takes place from July 25-27. The event organizers, Decade Days, shared that it will be “an unforgettable holiday experience.”

Paevey will be joined by Arielle Kebbel and Chad Michael Murray. Fans wondered if this was his soft launch back into acting. Paevey expressed an interest in returning to Hallmark. He said that he would try to network with the media company during his time there.

Arielle Kebbel, Joshua Bassett, Sophie Skelton, and Sammy Dell have joined the cast of I Can Only Imagine 2, the sequel to the 2018 faith-based film from Lionsgate and Kingdom Story Company. They will star alongside Milo Ventimiglia and returning cast members John Finley, Trace Adkins, and Dennis Quaid. Production is set to begin in April in Nashville.

The film continues the story of Bart Millard, played by Finley, the lead singer of the Christian band MercyMe. Kebbel will portray Hilary Timmons, the wife of Ventimiglia’s Tim Timmons. Bassett has been cast as Bart’s brother-in-law Christopher, while Skelton will take over the role of Bart’s wife, Shannon. Dell, making his theatrical debut, will play Bart’s son, Sam.

Directors Andrew Erwin and Brent McCorkle will helm the film, with McCorkle also writing the screenplay. The producing team includes Kevin Downes, Andrew Erwin, Cindy Bond, Bart Millard, Daryl Lefever, and Joshua Walsh.
