‘Juliet & Romeo’ Review: Tryhard Attempt to Make Shakespeare ‘Cool’ Achieves the Opposite
Image
Let’s get something straight: Making William Shakespeare’s plays “cool” is kind of the opposite of cool. The only thing older than trying to make Shakespeare’s plays “hip” is Shakespeare’s actual plays, which were plenty hip to begin with. Hollywood has been trying to hip up those bad boys for a hundred years. You’ll find John Gilbert and Norma Shearer making fun of studio execs trying to fix The Bard way back in “The Hollywood Revue of 1929,” as they squawked wacky lines like “Julie baby, I’m ga-ga about you” and “You’re just about the cookies for me, boyfriend.”

Generally speaking it’s the updated versions of “Romeo & Juliet” that age badly, but these versions can still have value. “West Side Story” remains the best side story. Baz Luhrmann’s “Romeo + Juliet” is the ninetiesest nineties movie that ever tied nines in...

The Toxic Avenger remake promo images reveal why the film is being released unrated
Macon Blair
Fans have been waiting a long time to see writer/director Macon Blair’s remake of the Troma cult classic The Toxic Avenger (watch it Here), which wrapped filming way back in 2021 and unveiled a teaser trailer near the end of 2023, around the time it had its world premiere screening – but we won’t have to wait much longer. At the start of the year, it was announced that Cineverse had acquired the distribution rights with the intention of giving the film a wide release, and we’ve since learned that they’re aiming for an August 29th theatrical release. Three years ago, the Motion Picture Association ratings boards gave the film an R rating for “strong violence and gore, language throughout, sexual references and brief graphic nudity”… but never mind all that. The Toxic Avenger remake is being released unrated, and new promo images reveal exactly why it’s going out unrated.

Legendary Schlock Company Troma Beat Disney To The Punch With One Animated Masterpiece
Image
If you don't know about the Long Island-based B-movie studio Troma, it's time you learned. Founded by Lloyd Kaufman and Michael Herz in 1974, Troma began its life producing raunchy sex comedies like "The First Turn-On!," "Squeeze Play!," and "Waitress!" Kaufman and Herz would hit the big time in 1984 with the release of their film "The Toxic Avenger," which marked a turning point for the company. After the success of "Toxic Avenger," a twisted, low-budget superhero movie (with a soon-to-be-released remake!), the studio would skew more heavily toward horror-comedies, gore films, and splatstick humor. Troma would continue to make and/or distribute notable schlock staples for years, including "Class of Nuke 'Em High," "Surf Nazis Must Die," "Troma's War," "Rabid Grannies," "A Nymphoid Barbarian in Dinosaur Hell," "Sgt. Kabukiman, NYPD," and the James Gunn-penned "Tromeo and Juliet," a riff on "Romeo & Juliet." They even distributed "Cannibal! The Musical," the...

Mr. Melvin cut combines The Toxic Avenger Part II and Part III into one film

‘Toxic Avenger’ Sequel Reconstruction ‘Mr. Melvin’ to Debut at Troma-Thon in Pennsylvania [Exclusive]
Image
As most Troma fans know, The Toxic Avenger Part II and The Toxic Avenger Part III were originally written and shot as one movie, but directors Lloyd Kaufman and Michael Herz ended up with so much footage that they broke it up into two installments.

36 years years later, the filmmakers’ initial vision for the sequel has been reconstructed under its original title, Mr. Melvin.

Andrew L. Miller, Kaufman’s assistant, and Adam Peltier, star of Troma’s upcoming film The Power of Positive Murder, unearthed the original script and edited footage from the two films together as originally intended.

Toxie actor Ron Fazio provided some new voiceover for Mr. Melvin. He stars alongside Phoebe Legere, John Altamura, Rick Collins, John Altamura, Rikiya Yasuoka, and Lisa Gaye.

Clocking it at around two hours, the Mr. Melvin cut will premiere as part of Troma-Thon 2025 at the Mahoning Drive-In Theater in Lehighton, Pa...

5 Things That Happen In Every James Gunn Movie
Image
Writer, director, and producer James Gunn has come a long way since his days of working for Troma Studios, making the most offensive low-budget movies unfit for print. From his early days working under Lloyd Kaufman at Troma to becoming the co-chairman of DC Studios (with Peter Safran), Gunn has always had some pretty strong themes in his films. While some of his written work occasionally strays into much darker territory (looking at you, "The Belko Experiment"), the movies that he writes and directs tend to be darkly funny ensemble pieces with at least a bit of bloodshed and a surprising amount of sweetness. Gunn has worked for both Marvel Studios and DC, and despite there being some pretty big differences between the tone and content of these superhero stories, they still all contain some of Gunn's telltale trademarks.

Starting in 2006 with his debut solo feature, "Slither," Gunn has shown...

'Toxic Avenger' Trailer 2 Has Evil Kevin Bacon and Ultra-Violent Toxie Revenge
Image
The Toxic Avenger is a movie that seemed destined to drop into a vat of toxic waste and never be seen again. Now, though, the reboot of the classic Troma schlockfest is heading into cinemas this August, and a new look at Peter Dinklage's mop-wielding titular character has arrived in the latest trailer.

The Toxic Avenger is a remake of the 1984 low-budget horror classic, in which a mild-mannered and bullied janitor ends up being dumped in a barrel of toxic waste, only to be transformed into a hideously deformed, vengeful anti-hero who sets out to extract bloody revenge on those who have done him wrong. It is believed that the new version, directed by Macon Blair, will not deviate too far from the original movie’s plot, but this time around it is bringing with it an incredible cast.

Alongside Dinklage as Winston Gooze/The Toxic Avenger, the film also stars Kevin Bacon,...

New 'The Toxic Avenger' Teaser Shows Peter Dinklage Meeting Kevin Bacon's Soulless CEO
Image
Peter Dinklage has a pounding headache, and his only hope of getting the help he needs is to appeal to the big boss — Kevin Bacon. A chaotic new teaser for Macon Blair's upcoming remake of The Toxic Avenger was just released by Nerdist and introduces the Footloose star's soulless CEO, Bob Garbinger, who has precisely no care for his longtime employee, Winston Gooze. The new spin on the gory Lloyd Kaufman Troma classic follows the down-on-his-luck janitor as he discovers he has a terminal illness and hatches a scheme to rob the company he works for to pay for the treatment and provide for his son. However, his plan also eventually leads to the accident that turns him into the violent, superpowered, mop-wielding vigilante, and the new footage teases how his diagnosis sends him down that path.

A previous Toxic Avengerteaser we exclusively shared opened with a fictional low-budget advertisement,...

‘The Toxic Avenger’: Release Date, Cast, Plot, and All You Need to Know
Image
Remember the cult hit from 1984 that made Troma Entertainment notorious for its schlockiness? Finally, The Toxic Avenger is returning to the big screen once again. The franchise has been equally funny, brutal, and strangely charming. The original film mixed slapstick violence with a bit of satire. After many decades, the reboot looks to be authentic to its roots while introducing something new for the younger audience.

However, the path to this remake has not been easy. After premiering to a select audience, the film mysteriously disappeared. The movie even had big names like Arnold Schwarzenegger and Guillermo Del Toro attached to it at some points. Now that it appears to be finished, let’s explore the actors, storyline, and all the relevant details on this radioactive resurrection.

Makers and cast of The Toxic Avenger

Everything We Know About the Toxic Avenger Remake
Luisa Guerreiro in The Toxic Avenger (2023)
Back in 1984, Troma Entertainment brought the world The Toxic Avenger (watch it Here), a film about “the first superhero from New Jersey.” That film spawned a franchise, leading to The Toxic Avenger Part II (1989), The Toxic Avenger Part III: The Last Temptation of Toxie (1989), Citizen Toxie: The Toxic Avenger IV (2000), a stage musical, and an animated series called Toxic Crusaders. For a long time, we’ve been hearing that Troma wanted to make a Toxic Avenger 5 – but instead doing that, they have loaned out the rights to Legendary Pictures, allowing them to make a remake of the original film that’s set to reach theatres on August 29th, courtesy of Cineverse. In anticipation of the film’s long-awaited release, we have put together a list of Everything We Know About the Toxic Avenger Remake… and here we go:

Why James Gunn's Remake Of A Horror Cult Classic Was Cancelled
Image
In the late, great Larry Cohen's 1974 horror classic "It's Alive," Frank (John P. Ryan) and his wife Lenore (Sharon Farrell) have just had their second child ... and it's a monster. Their baby was born with fangs and claws, as well as increased dexterity and an unhuman lust for violence. As soon as the baby is born, it kills the nurses and scurries away through a skylight. The bulk of the film is a gruesome manhunt ... er, babyhunt ... wherein Frank and the local police track the killer baby through the streets, through a school, and eventually into the sewers. The baby murders people at each stop. It's posited along the way that the baby was mutated by the birth control pills still in Lenore's system when she was pregnant, and that the pharmaceutical company that made the pills is liable for any damage the mutant baby does. The Big Pharma...

The Toxic Avenger Gets A Bloody, Weird Teaser Trailer That Will Leave Jaws (Literally) On The Floor
Image
The first teaser trailer for The Toxic Avenger has arrived and it's violent, weird, and unhinged...which we're guessing is pretty much everything you'd want from a movie featuring the beloved Troma Entertainment cult hero.

Despite receiving overwhelmingly positive reviews at film festivals in 2023 (the movie has 92% on Rotten Tomatoes), it's been a battle to get The Toxic Avenger into theaters and, when it is finally released this summer, it will be unrated.

Based on the jaw-dropping gore - that's not hyperbole; someone literally loses their jaw here - it's not exactly hard to see why this movie didn't receive an R or even Nc-17 rating from the MPAA.

"The goal was to try to stay true to the vibe of Lloyd's original Jennifer Aspinall/Mitch Cohen creature," director Macon Blair recently said, "with some influence from the Toxic Crusaders cartoon's look, while also trying to do something new...

The Toxic Avenger First Look Finally Reveals Peter Dinklage's Horrifying Toxie In All His Mutated Glory
Image
The first teaser trailer for The Toxic Avenger remake was dropped way back in October 2023. Few updates followed that sneak peek, though reviews from various film festivals were largely positive.

Last year, we heard that director Macon Blair's movie - starring Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones) as the character - had been deemed "unreleasable." Things looked bleak, only for it to have since been revealed that an unrated cut will hit theaters later this year.
