ScreenRant exclusive image offers a new look at the unrated The Toxic Avenger reboot. Written and directed by Macon Blair, the movie is based on Lloyd Kaufman's 1984 cult classic and stars Peter Dinklage as Winston Gooze, Kevin Bacon as Bob Garbinger, Elijah Wood as Fritz Garbinger, Taylour Paige as J.J., Jacob Tremblay as Wade, Jane Levy as an insurance rep, among others. Despite originally being scheduled for a 2023 release, the project encountered significant delays as it searched for a distributor and is finally arriving in theaters on August 29.

At the start of the year, it was announced that Cineverse had acquired the distribution rights with the intention of giving the film a wide release, and we’ve since learned that they’re aiming for an August 29th theatrical release. Three years ago, the Motion Picture Association ratings boards gave the film an R rating for “strong violence and gore, language throughout, sexual references and brief graphic nudity”… but never mind all that. The Toxic Avenger remake is being released unrated, and new promo images reveal exactly why it’s going out unrated.

If you don't know about the Long Island-based B-movie studio Troma, it's time you learned. Founded by Lloyd Kaufman and Michael Herz in 1974, Troma began its life producing raunchy sex comedies like "The First Turn-On!," "Squeeze Play!," and "Waitress!" Kaufman and Herz would hit the big time in 1984 with the release of their film "The Toxic Avenger," which marked a turning point for the company. But before the new movie makes its way out into the world, Troma will be unveiling Mr. Melvin, a reconstruction of their original plan for their 1989 films The Toxic Avenger Part II and The Toxic Avenger Part III: The Last Temptation of Toxie.

As most Troma fans know, The Toxic Avenger Part II and The Toxic Avenger Part III were originally written and shot as one movie, but directors Lloyd Kaufman and Michael Herz ended up with so much footage that they broke it up into two installments.

36 years years later, the filmmakers’ initial vision for the sequel has been reconstructed under its original title, Mr. Melvin.

Andrew L. Miller, Kaufman’s assistant, and Adam Peltier, star of Troma’s upcoming film The Power of Positive Murder, unearthed the original script and edited footage from the two films together as originally intended.

Toxie actor Ron Fazio provided some new voiceover for Mr. Melvin. He stars alongside Phoebe Legere, John Altamura, Rick Collins, John Altamura, Rikiya Yasuoka, and Lisa Gaye.

Writer, director, and producer James Gunn has come a long way since his days of working for Troma Studios, making the most offensive low-budget movies unfit for print. Exclusive: Patrick Wachsberger and Legendary Entertainment’s nascent sales and production joint venture 193 has set its first international sales title in the shape of Peter Dinklage starrer The Toxic Avenger, which it will be screening and shopping at next month’s Cannes market.

Cineverse, and its horror division Bloody Disgusting, have settled on Iconic Events Releasing as the theatrical distribution partner for the August 29 unrated wide release of The Toxic Avenger. As seen in a video posted to X by industry fan page DiscussingFilm, a boat bearing promo materials for The Toxic Avenger was spotted floating down the Chicago River, which was dyed green for St. Patrick's Day. The first teaser trailer for The Toxic Avenger remake was dropped way back in October 2023. Few updates followed that sneak peek, though reviews from various film festivals were largely positive.

Last year, we heard that director Macon Blair's movie - starring Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones) as the character - had been deemed "unreleasable." Things looked bleak, only for it to have since been revealed that an unrated cut will hit theaters later this year.

Macon Blair tells EW of the new design, “The goal was to try to stay true to the vibe of Lloyd [Kaufman’s] original Jennifer Aspinall/Mitch Cohen creature, with some influence from the Toxic Crusaders cartoon’s look, while also trying to do something new and weird and lovable with Toxie’s design. I love what Millennium FX did with it — part human, part mutant, all heart.”
