Who Killed Amy Winehouse? Asif Kapadia on the Case of the Dead Singer, and the ‘Really Heavy’ Version of ‘Amy’ His Wife Preferred
Image
British filmmaker Asif Kapadia approached Oscar-winning documentary “Amy,” which was released 10 years ago, as if he were a detective investigating a crime, he told an audience of documentary professionals this week at Visions du Réel, a film festival in Nyon, Switzerland. So, who killed Amy Winehouse?

As he was making the film, Kapadia was conscious that it was “really dark.” “A friend said to me, ‘If you tell the truth, this film’s never going to come out.’ I thought: ‘What’s the truth? I don’t know what the story is.’ And then once I learned the story, I thought, ‘My God, this thing will never come out. It’s really heavy.’ There’s a version of this film that is 15 minutes longer, which is like really heavy, and my wife is still annoyed that we didn’t release that one, but it’s just a bit too much.

A Mind-Bending Sci-Fi Movie Is Dominating Max's Streaming Charts
Image
The best sci-fi movies usually mirror some aspect of our contemporary world. "Dune" did it with its grim predictions of ecological warfare and the folly of humanity pinning its hopes on some messiah, "Blade Runner" exposed us to a dystopian technocratic future that continues to feel like it could easily become a reality, and the "Terminator" movies have basically come to represent the popular understanding of AI and the technological singularity. But what if a movie really drove the point home with an on-the-nose approach that actually blended real-world footage with fictionalized scenes set in a dystopian future designed to represent the outcome of today's political and social unrest? Apparently, such a thing would become a streaming hit.

The dystopian landscape of the streaming most-watched charts are enough to convince anyone we're already living in a nightmare future, but depending on how you feel about Asif Kapadia's "2073," there...

Asif Kapadia on the “dark, heavy” journey of getting dystopian doc ‘2073’ made – and seen
Image
Oscar-winning British director Asif Kapadia has spoken of the difficulties of both making and distributing his end-of-days doc/fiction feature2073.

Told from a future perspective after the collapse of society, it utilises real-life footage to point to global tragedy to come. But Kapadia says that the “tipping point into authoritarian rule” has already arrived.

Speaking during a wide-ranging masterclass at Visions du Reel, Kapadia described 2073, which premiered in Venice last September,as “a documentary set in the future that hasn’t happened yet. The film is a warning, which I think even one of the financiers didn’t get – until...

Why Mindhunter Season 3 Was Canceled by Netflix
Image
Early in 2023, it was confirmed that the psychological thriller Mindhunter would not return for a third season. Directed by David Fincher, known for films like Fight Club and Seven, the Netflix TV series depicts the founding of the FBI Behavioral Science unit. Following the efforts of FBI Agents to study serial killers, the series explores the psychological impact of wading into the darkest parts of the human psyche. The mix of experimental visuals with stories about scientific exploration created a groundbreaking and unique approach to depicting true crime stories that helped the series stand out in a glut of true crime content.

Mindhunter's stories and characters deeply resonated with fans of intense crime thrillers and received critical acclaim, but Netflix ultimately canceled the show. The shocking cancelation of the acclaimed series was initially attributed to David Fincher's need to focus on other projects for Netflix, like his Oscar-winning film Mank.

‘2073’ Blu-ray Review
Image
Stars: Samantha Morton, Naomie Ackie, Hector Hewer | Written by Asif Kapadia, Tony Grisoni | Directed by Asif Kapadia

It’s the year 2073, and the worst fears of modern life have been realised. Surveillance drones fill the burnt orange skies and militarised police roam the wrecked streets, while survivors hide away underground, struggling to remember a free and hopeful existence.

As a fan of both speculative fiction and thought-provoking documentaries, I was intrigued by 2073, the latest film from Asif Kapadia, best known for Senna and Amy. The film blends dystopian fiction with documentary elements, creating a chilling, hybrid vision of our near future.

Samantha Morton delivers a haunting performance as a mute survivor navigating a post-apocalyptic world. Her silence speaks volumes, forcing the audience to absorb the devastation around her. Interwoven with her journey are real-world interviews and archival footage tackling pressing global crises—climate change, authoritarianism, and technological overreach. The result...

Fail Safe, 1964’s other nuclear war film, is getting a remake
Joe Berlinger
Documentary filmmaker Joe Berlinger is reportedly going to direct a remake of nuclear war thriller Fail Safe, the 1964 film that lost out to Dr Strangelove.

Remakes are usually chosen based on brand recognition, so it’s a little surprising to wake up to the news that the 1964 nuclear war thriller Fail Safe might be getting a remake. The film will be directed by Joe Berlinger, previously better known as documentary filmmaker, though he’s also made a couple of narrative features, too, including 2019’s Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil And Vile, about the murderer Ted Bundy.

The original Fail Safe was directed by Sidney Lumet and featured a starry cast, including Henry Fonda, Walther Matthau and Fritz Weaver. It wasn’t long, though, before it became more widely remembered as the other nuclear war film released in 1964, since it was beaten to cinemas by the thematically similar Dr Strangelove, directed by...

Asif Kapadia, an Oscar Winner With ‘Amy,’ to Open Visions du Réel Industry Program
Image
British filmmaker Asif Kapadia, an Oscar winner with “Amy,” will be the opening speaker of the 23rd edition of the industry program of documentary festival Visions du Réel in Nyon, Switzerland.

The director, screenwriter and producer will give a masterclass on April 6, officially launching the industry program.

The festival said Kapadia has “continued to develop an innovative cinematographic language that combines the use of a rich corpus of personal archives, often previously unpublished, with extensive investigative work and a psychological approach to the life of his characters.”

He is the author of a trilogy of films centered on the tragic destinies of extraordinary talents from different backgrounds and generations: “Senna” (2010), “Amy” and “Diego Maradona” (2019) are among his critically acclaimed films.

“His body of work blurs the contours of the documentary genre by freely intersecting the emotional and narrative punch of fiction and the more rigorous veins of investigative filmmaking, shedding...

‘2073’ Movie Ending Explained & Full Story: What Happens To Ghost?
Image
Ideally, the name of Asif Kapadia should be enough to get you to watch anything. The man has cemented his place when it comes to documentary filmmaking already—mainly due to the trilogy of Senna (2010), Amy (2015), and Diego (2019), all of which should be considered pinnacles of the genre. Kapadia’s last work about tennis legend Roger Federer’s final days was quite weak in comparison, but that’s no reason to not get excited about his latest—especially when he’s making a La Jetee (1962)-inspired futuristic docudrama. That’s new territory for the filmmaker, by the way, and on paper, 2073 does sound like quite the thing. Sadly, though, the final execution is a mess. Never have I ever thought I would have to check my watch while watching something made by Asif Kapadia, but that’s exactly what happened here. Anyway, the point of the article is to give...

2073 (Asif Kapadia)

Asif Kapadia––the biographical documentary wiz behind contemporary classics like Senna and Amy––opens his semi-fictional film 2073 in a flurry of doc footage. Wildfires, floods, and other such natural disasters set the tone while disturbing clips of cops bashing skulls and riot police brutalizing innocent people cement it for the next 85 minutes. Then comes the fiction: it’s been 37 years since “The Event,” and we’re in the future: the year 2073. – Luke H. (full review)

'2073' Review | A Sci-Fi Documentary's Dystopian Prophecy
Image
Oscar-winning documentary filmmaker Asif Kapadia combines documentary and fiction in 2073, a hellish vision of a dystopian future based on current and past world events. He predicts a scorched Earth decimated by climate change, with a ruling class of one-percenters who use surveillance technology to violently crush dissent. The paper-thin narrative intercuts the travails of a fictionalized protagonist with archival news footage and commentary from noted journalists, activists, and political figures. Kapadia unabashedly employs a sledgehammer approach to preach liberal values while excoriating right-wing populism and libertarianism. 2073's heavy-handed doomsday prophesying will certainly rankle those with contrasting views, but there's no denying the validity of Kapadia's arguments.

‘Sonic’ and ‘Mufasa’ Run a Close Race in Average Post-Christmas Box Office
Image
Led by a near-tie between two second weekend animated franchise films, then bolstered by two unusual wide Christmas day specialized-distributor releases, U.S./Canada theaters saw their best post-holiday grosses since 2019.

“Sonic the Hedgehog 3” (Paramount) and “Mufasa: The Lion King” (Disney) were less than $1 million apart for the three day lead, while #3 “Nosferatu” (Focus) and #6 “A Complete Unknown” (Searchlight) combined added a much needed $34 million to the total. Robert Eggers’ Dracula-esque take on the F.W. Murnau classic contributed over $21 million of that by itself.

The $165 million three day gross is a 45 percent improvement over last year, and, with two days left, will help lessen the 2024 shortfall from last year to 3.5 percent. But for all the positive signs this uptick suggests, the total falls below any unadjusted gross for the weekend since 2010, and in terms of attendance is one third or more less than that period and earlier.

The close...

Mindhunter Director Recalls How Working on Netflix Series Influenced New Dystopian Sci-Fi Film
Image
Asif Kapadia, the director of two episodes of Mindhunter, recently spoke about how working on the Netflix series influenced his new movie. Titled 2073, Kapadia's latest work is set in a dystopian future, influenced by his time working on Mindhunter in Pennsylvania during the 2016 election.

Set in the year 2073, the film sees surveillance drones and militarized police roaming the streets while people hide out underground. 2073 blends science fiction and speculative nonfiction, examining a potential future foreshadowed by the present reality. The film stars The Walking Dead's Samantha Morton as a survivor who has recurring nightmarish visions of the past One of the big events that impacted Kapadia for the film was the election between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump, which he saw firsthand while shooting Mindhunter.

Netflix Sets Rafael Nadal Doc, SEC College Football Series
Image
Freshly-retired pro tennis star Rafael Nadal is getting Netflix’s documentary treatment.

The streamer and Skydance Sports unveiled plans to develop the docuseries that follow Nadal’s career, which includes 22-time Grand Slam champion trophies and his dramatic final season in 2024. Nadal retired last month at the Davis Cup after 23 years in competitive pro tennis.

‘2073’ Review: Asif Kapadia’s Docufiction About the Earth’s Future Spirals into Despair
Image
A clunky fusion of sci-fi fiction and political documentary, Asif Kapadia’s 2073 shakes us into submission via a series of cursory rundowns of crumbling democracies, the weaponization of social media, rising xenophobia, and more. In summarily covering so many global crises, Kapadia’s film plays less like a galvanizing call to action than a shapeless and hollow piece of agitprop that inspires only the same paralyzing sense of fear and hopelessness that it accuses demagogues around the world of provoking in people.

Kapadia and editor Chris King have detailed the biographies of famous figures in compelling, well-structured documentaries—Dominic Senna in 2010’s Senna and Amy Winehouse in 2015’s Amy. By contrast, 2073, whose only coherent thesis is the belief that the world is going to shit, is dubious and throws structure to the wind. It tries to cover so much material that even the most abhorrent of tragedies are somewhat...

Will Ferrell Doc In, Christopher Reeve Doc Out: Snubs & Surprises From Oscar Documentary Shortlist
Image
Will & Harper, the Netflix documentary about comedic actor Will Ferrell and his friendship with SNL pal Harper Steele who came out as trans, earned a spot on the coveted Oscar documentary feature shortlist today.

It wasn’t the only shortlist honor for the film directed by Josh Greenbaum. The tune from the closing credits – “Will and Harper Go West,” written by SNL alum Kristen Wiig and Sean Douglas and performed by Wiig – got shortlisted for Best Original Song (Douglas is the son of actor Michael Keaton).

But another high-profile documentary in the running for the shortlist didn’t make the cut: Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story, about the late actor who was paralyzed in a horse-riding accident. That film, directed by Ian Bonhôte and Peter Ettedgui, recently won Best Documentary Feature at the Critics Choice Documentary Awards, and last week earned a nomination for the Producers Guild of America Award.

Oscar-Winning Director Asif Kapadia “Spent Decade On U.S. Watch List After Taxi Driver Reported Him”
Image
British film director Asif Kapadia was, for a decade, on a “watch list” that saw him stopped and interviewed every time he tried to enter the U.S.

The Oscar-winning director of the documentary Amy told this weekend’s Guardian newspaper his experience began after he travelled back from New York in the early 2000s, and a taxi driver observed him taking photos of the city-scape on the way to the airport.

Kapadia, already a BAFTA winner by then for his debut feature The Warrior, told the newspaper:

“I get to the airport and I’m in the Virgin lounge when my name is called out. And I thought: ‘Have I left a bag or something?’ But then five or six people come: homeland security. And they stop me in the lounge in front of everyone, the only person of colour in there, and empty out my bag, and they say: ‘Someone’s reported you.

‘Trump has been explicit about revenge’: Asif Kapadia on his new film about the threat to democracy
Asif Kapadia
The man behind Amy and Senna has turned his attention to ‘techno-authoritarianism’ in the genre-defying 2073. He talks to our journalist – one of the movie’s unlikely stars – about the events that fed his dystopian vision

It was some time in the early 2000s and Asif Kapadia, already a successful film director, a wunderkind whose first feature in 2001, The Warrior, won the Bafta for outstanding British film, was travelling back from New York.

“There’s a beautiful, gorgeous sunset over Manhattan. I’m in a limo being taken to the airport. And I was taking photos of Manhattan because I was driving over Brooklyn Bridge and it’s just all so cinematic and I became subconsciously aware of the driver watching me in the rear view mirror.

Neon Secures $200+ Million Credit Facility To Bolster Core Operations, Expand Into New Markets
Image
Neon said today it’s closed a $200 million-plus credit facility led by Comerica Bank.

The funding, which follows the leading indie distributor and producer’s previous facility with Comerica from October of 2022, will be used to bolster core operations, including film acquisition, development, production, and distribution, while also expanding into new markets. The investment will further support strategic initiatives and strengthen its international footprint, driving additional growth.

Earlier this year it debuted a new international sales strand, with Cannes its first official stop, launching international for Keeper, the next genre film by Longlegs helmer Osgood Perkins.

The deal, which was negotiated and managed by Neon’s CFO Ryan Friscia, comes after the company recently released Anora, the highly-anticipated new film from Sean Baker starring Mikey Madison, which won the Palme d’Or in Cannes and opened Stateside October 18 to the highest per-screen average of 2024; Nicolas Cage-starring horror Longlegs which...

Neon closes $200m-plus credit facility led by Comerica Bank to bolster core functions
Image
Neon has closed a $200m-plus credit facility led by Comerica Bank which it will use to bolster core functions including film acquisitions, development, production, and distribution.

The arrangement will additionally be used to support expansion into new markets and strengthen the company’s international footprint.

It comes after a mighty year at the box office for Neon after Osgood Perkins’s summer release Longlegs starring Maika Monroe and Nicolas Cage became its highest earner at the box office on more than $126m worldwide, of which $75m came from North America and $52m from international markets.

Neon Closes New $200 Million Credit Facility Led by Comerica Bank
Image
Oscar-winning indie studio Neon has secured a new $200 million credit facility, flushing the company with cash for operations and growth.

The infusion, which could keep “Anora” star Mikey Madison in lucite platform heels until the end of time, is led by Neon’s existing credit provider Comerica Bank. The raise will contribute to film acquisition, development, production, distribution and market expansion, Neon said Monday.

“Comerica believes in the vision of Neon and couldn’t be more thrilled to support their continued growth. Their ability to identify and curate film, while finding innovative ways to connect audiences with cinema, is unmatched,” said Comerica Entertainment Group SVP Derek Riedel, adding that the “independent film landscape is a core pillar of our business and we are excited about the future.”

Riedel oversaw the transaction for the bank, with Neon chief financial officer Ryan Friscia negotiating on the studio side.

It’s been a good year for Neon,...

Neon Raises $200 Million to Boost Production and Expand to New Markets
Image
This year alone, Neon released one of the biggest box office hits in its history with “Longlegs” and had a fifth-straight winner of the Palme d’Or at Cannes with “Anora.” With more exciting projects in the works — like “They Follow,” the sequel to one of their earliest hits “It Follows” — even bigger and better things may be on the horizon. All of that costs money.

On Monday, Neon announced it has closed a $200 million-plus credit facility as led by Comerica Bank (it previously had another from Comerica in 2022). Tom Quinn’s distributor will use that investment to bolster its film acquisition (Palme d’Or winners don’t come cheap!) and development, production, and distribution. That is likely to include new markets.

Another upcoming film to look out for from Neon includes “I Love Boosters” from Boots Riley and starring Keke Palmer, Naomi Ackie, Lakeith Stanfield, Demi Moore, Eiza González,...

Image
Neon — the indie distributor founded by Tom Quinn that has had box office success with art house titles like Parasite and recently with Sean Baker’s Anora — has secured a $200 million credit facility with a lending consortium led by Comerica Bank.

The revolver will help grow Neon’s operations, including film acquisition, development, production and distribution, while also driving the indie studio into new international markets. In 2022, Neon secured a revolving credit facility with Comerica Bank to expand the studio’s previous credit facility.

The latest funding will also help grow Neon’s production efforts. The studio’s upcoming film development and production slate includes the Boots Riley feature I Love Boosters, starring Keke Palmer, Naomi Ackie and Lakeith Stanfield; They Follow, the sequel to the horror classic It Follows from writer-director David Robert Mitchell, starring Maika Monroe; and Michael Covino’s Splitsville, starring Dakota Johnson and Adria Arjona.

The world of music documentaries is a complex one.

There are plenty of films covering the biggest artists in the world from Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé to Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour, Hulu’s Road Diary: Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band and Martin Scorsese-produced Beatles ’64.

But under the surface, music like alternative music scenes themselves, there’s a phalanx of weird and interesting films about lesser known artists, where the story is often as strange and endearing as the artists. These often become the films that have longevity, from The Decline of Western Civilization to Dig!

This is where the Sound Unseen Film Festival comes in. Held in the Twin Cities across a variety of cinemas in and around Minneapolis, the festival showcases a slew of leftfield films from interesting directors and filmmakers such as Omar & Cedric: If This Ever Gets Weird, Swamp Dogg Gets His Pool Painted,...

Speculative Dystopian Documentary ‘2073’ Sets December Release from Neon — Watch the New Trailer
Image
British filmmaker Asif Kapadia has found success in both the documentary and scripted spaces, working on projects as varied as “Mindhunter” and the documentaries “Amy” and “Senna.” For his latest work, the speculative sci-fi documentary “2073,” he combines the two disciplines to offer a pessimistic view of America’s potential future.

The unique project, which places interviews with current political figures alongside a scripted sci-fi story about a dystopian version of San Francisco in the year 2073, has now secured theatrical distribution. Neon has announced that it will release “2073” in select theaters on Friday, December 27 — just under the wire to qualify for Academy Awards consideration. The announcement came with a new trailer, which stresses the film’s relevance in the aftermath of the 2024 election.

Current political figures interviewed for the film include Rappler CEO and former CNN reporter Maria Ressa, The Observer writer Carole Cadwalladr, Washington Post columnist Rana Ayyub,...
