Did Tales of the Empire rush Barriss Offee's story?
Image
This article contains spoilers for Tales of the Empire episodes 4-6.

Barriss Offee once predicted the fall of the Republic. She sensed that the Jedi had lost their way during the Clone Wars and worried that the growing Darkness had overtaken them. Her fear and anger led her to the Dark Side, attacking both the Jedi Temple and her best friend. After bombing the Jedi Temple, she framed Ahsoka Tano for the crimes. Only after Anakin Skywalker apprehended her did Barriss make a full confession for her actions, exonerating Ahsoka.

For 10 years after those fateful The Clone Wars episodes, we did not hear from Barriss Offee. So, fans were thrilled when it was revealed that Tales of the Empire would focus three episodes on her story. After the success of its predecessor, Tales of the Jedi, I had full faith that these episodes could give me the answers I needed...

Why Jason Statham Didn't Join The Fast & Furious Franchise Earlier
Image
Jason Statham's Deckard Shaw has become an integral member of the "Fast & Furious" family. He's even received his own spinoff adventure at this point, having starred in 2019's "Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw." It used to be a point of contention that the villainous mercenary turned Toretto family ally was forgiven so easily after being responsible for the death of fan-favorite Han (Sung Kang). "F9," however, somewhat cleared him of that charge real quick. Now, Deckard is just another member of the team, so much so it's easy to forget how explosive his first appearance was.

"Fast & Furious 6" was originally meant to serve as Han's final journey before the events of "The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift," where he initially met his end. So, when the mid-credits scene started replaying Han's deadly crash, it meant that something else was right around the corner. The electricity in...

3 Years Later, This Underrated Star Wars Character's Storyline Still Makes Zero Sense
Image
Quick LinksReva's Character Arc in Obi-Wan Kenobi Was Incredibly ControversialWhy Reva's Character Still Doesn't WorkWhat Happened to Reva in the Star Wars Franchise?

Obi-Wan Kenobiremains one of the more controversial Disney+ series in the Star Wars canon even three years after its release. Fans campaigned for the project for years, demanding one more adventure for Ewan McGregor's destitute Jedi Master. However, the final product proved to be disappointing for many Star Wars fans, who praised McGregor's performance but found the overall series rather lackluster. While much better received than The Book of Boba Fett and The Acolyte, the Obi-Wan-centric series could never live up to more popular Disney+ projects like Andor and The Mandalorian.

One of the biggest controversies surrounding Obi-Wan Kenobi was Moses Ingram's character. The Queen's Gambit actress plays Reva Semander, the Third Sister of the Imperial Inquisitorious who serves as a major antagonist in the series.

Vin Diesel and His Fast & Furious Family Reprise Their Roles for Fun Super Bowl Ad
Image
The Fast and Furious franchise kicked off in 2001, and since then, it has become one of the highest-grossing franchises of all time. The high-octane action, combined with espionage and heists, is set to turn off the engine for good in 2026 with the highly anticipated, yet untitled Fast X: Part 2.

To hype the upcoming film, which is set to begin production sometime early this year, three original stars reunited for a fun Super Bowl ad. Ahead of the big game on Feb. 10, many big brands splashed on creative ads to premiere during the game, and Haagen-Dazs enlisted the help of Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, and Chris "Ludacris" Bridges. Fast & Furious 11’s Long-Awaited Reunion Will Finally Complete A Storyline 4 Years In The Making
Image
The Fast & Furious franchise will almost certainly be ending with Fast 11, and the film will likely be a huge celebration of all the sequels that came before it. Once it has resolved the major cliffhanger ending of Fast X, the upcoming sequel will follow Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) and his friends as they're hunted down by Dante Reyes (Jason Momoa), the son of Fast Five's villain Hernan Reyes. This blood feud is easily the most interesting part of Fast X, and it's the perfect subplot for the Fast & Furious series to use as its grand finale.

Fast & Furious has been through many phases throughout the turbulent franchise, starting out with grounded thrillers and ultimately becoming a much bolder, brasher, and more expensive series of huge stunts and melodramatic characters. But throughout it all, the characters have always been the focus of this story. The Fast & Furious...

Variety reports that Snoop Dogg is set to star in The Last Man, an original sci-fi movie written and directed by Luc Besson. Dogg voiced one of the main characters in Arthur and the Minimoys, which was released almost 20 years ago.

Vin Diesel Thanksgiving Post Hints at Uncertainty Over 'Fast & Furious' Franchise's Future
Image
Fans of the Fast & Furious franchise received a surprise Thanksgiving message from star Vin Diesel, but it does not paint a happy picture for the upcoming finale of the action saga. While there are many who have been happy to watch the increasingly unbelievable antics of Dom Toretto and his crew, it seems that one person who really just wants to get back to basics is the man himself.

The Fast & Furious saga was never meant to become one of the biggest franchises in Hollywood, especially when considering its origins in a 1998 magazine article about illegal street racing. The first movie, released in 2001, kicked off a run of four films that pretty much stuck to the same idea and remained grounded in the real world of street racing. However, Fast Five arrived a decade later to take the franchise in a different direction, with the familiar faces being...

Vin Diesels Rotten 2003 Action Thriller to Stream for Free in December
Image
Fast and Furious star Vin Diesel has carved out a legacy as a blockbuster action hero, but not all of his efforts in the genre have been as well-received as that multi-billion-dollar box office franchise. And now, one of those efforts is getting ready to stream for free. The movie in question is Diesels 2003 vigilante action thriller A Man Apart, which caused a pretty major divide between audiences and critics upon release, and finds the Riddick star leading the way as an undercover DEA agent on a violent vendetta.

Directed by F. Gary Gray of Law Abiding Citizen, Straight Outta Compton, and The Fate of the Furious fame, A Man Apart was criticized for its clich approach, as well as its inability to balance both action and drama in a satisfactory way. All of which resulted in a score of just 10% on Rotten Tomatoes. On the flip side, audiences were more taken with Diesels brooding,...

Showtime Accused of Stealing ‘Yellowjackets’ From 2015 Film ‘Eden’ in Copyright Infringement Lawsuit
Image
Showtime and Lionsgate’s Entertainment One are being sued for copyright infringement, with the lawsuit alleging that their hit series, “Yellowjackets,“ stole ideas from the 2015 film, “Eden.”

A lawsuit obtained by TheWrap and filed in California federal court by the company that owns the rights to “Eden” alleges that the Showtime series has “strikingly similar elements” to the film. Both follow a beleaguered soccer team that crashes in the woods on the way to a game, and in the midst of their survival attempts, begin to lean into cult-like behavior, ultimately resorting to cannibalism.

“In both works, the survivors, which include various players and the coach, among others, must fight for their lives against the harsh elements, starvation through dwindling resources and the psychological toll of isolation in the form of growing darkness within themselves,” Thursday’s complaint states. “As they struggle to survive, tensions rise, alliances form, dark secrets...

Following the critical and financial success of the previous entry, Fast & Furious 6 had a lot to live up to, and it mostly succeeded, especially in the ending and mid-credits scenes, which not only satisfyingly wrapped up the film's conflicts but also perfectly set up the events for the seventh Fast & Furious movie. Directed by Justin Lin, Fast and Furious 6 takes place years after Dominic "Dom" Torreto (Vin Diesel) and his crew successfully pulled off the bank heist in Brazil in Fast Five. The crew have gone their separate ways, and everyone seems to be doing well.

Dom and his team are forced back into the game when Luke Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson) informs Dom that a rogue British agent named Owen Shaw (Luke Evans) plans on making a device called "Nightshade," which can shut off all power in a country. Hobbs asks Dom for help in exchange...

Keanu Reeves in John Wick (2014)
Interviews: Weekend in Taipei stars Luke Evans, Sung Kang and director George Huang talk racing, action, and more
Keanu Reeves in John Wick (2014)
Who doesn’t love a fun action movie? With John Wick and The Fast Saga changing the game for what audiences have come to expect from big-budget action movies, other movies are often relegated to second-class efforts. Luc Besson, the creator of The Transporter and Taken franchises, has cemented his own brand of action movie that has been around for decades. Partnering with co-writer and director George Huang, Besson has produced the new movie Weekend in Taipei, which mines the classic style of nineties-era action movies for a fun, brisk movie experience (check out our review Here).

Weekend in Taipei follows DEA agent John Lawlor (Luke Evans) as he returns to Taiwan after fifteen years away. The last time he was there, he had a romance with criminal transporter Joey (Gwei Lun-mei). Lawlor is in town to pick up evidence to take down drug kingpin Kwang (Sung Kang). Unbeknownst to John,...

Swimming with Sharks Director Looks Back on Kevin Spacey Satire
Image
Hollywood has faced increasing scrutiny over the past decade over how the business works behind the scenes, even down to the treatment of the underlings serving Tinseltown's all-powerful executives. There have even been narrative films about the headline-making subject, such as She Said (2022) and The Assistant (2019), and the excellent current HBO series, The Franchise. But 30 years ago, Hollywood was also turning the lens on itself, with meta features like Swimming with Sharks. In the satirical comedy-drama, Kevin Spacey plays an esteemed but abusive producer who treats his latest assistant (Frank Whaley), as expected, like garbage.

Decades later, the topical film was adapted to the small screen for a series of the same name, starring Kiernan Shipka and Diane Kruger. MovieWeb recently spoke with George Huang, the original film's writer and director, amid the release of his latest feature Weekend in Taipei and learned more about how the original Swimming With Sharks...

Jason Statham's Return to The Fast & the Furious Lands New Streaming Home
Image
With the holidays fast approaching, the subject of family comes up a lot, and in the world of Hollywood, perhaps no other franchise embodies the meaning of family more than The Fast and the Furious. Since 2001, the saga has shown time and time again that you dont have to be blood to be welcomed into Doms world, and in the case of Jason Stathams character of Deckard Shaw, you can go from being a heated rival to having a seat at the Toretto table if you prove yourself worthy. Statham made his first appearance in the series back in 2013s Fast & Furious 6, and has been a mainstay in the franchise ever since, with his latest appearance being in last years Fast X, which lands a new streaming home later this month.

On Nov. 15, Fast X will move from its current streaming home on Prime Video over to Peacock,...

Weekend in Taipei Review: Explosive Action Meets Unexpected Emotion
Image
“Weekend in Taipei” is a thrilling action movie that flashes back to the 1980s and combines family drama, foreign intrigue, and action. It was directed by George Huang and written by the famous action movie writer Luc Besson. The movie takes viewers on a thrilling ride through Taiwan’s busy streets and criminal underworld.

The main character is John Lawlor, a DEA agent played by Luke Evans, who goes to Taipei against his boss’s orders to complete a personal task. His goal was drug lord Kwang, who Sung Kang played scarily. This isn’t just another simple chase story, though. John meets up with Joey (Gwei Lun-Mei), an old friend now married to Kwang and has a teenage son named Raymond. This changes the story in a complicated way.

The story has many different parts, including a bad agent’s search for justice, a difficult love story, and the...

‘Weekend in Taipei’ Review: A Squealing-Tires Tour of Taiwan Sights for DEA Agent Luke Evans
Image
In 1982, Prince urged everyone to “Party like it’s 1999.” Aiming to party somewhere roughly in the middle of that timespan is “Weekend in Taipei,” a throwback in the sense that it recalls the unpretentious — if also unmemorable — pleasures of many boilerplate action movies released in the peak Vcr era. Luc Besson is both a co-writer and producer on this French-Taiwanese enterprise, which provides George Huang his first directorial feature in some time, 30 years after his very different debut, “Swimming With Sharks.”

With “Fast & Furious” alumni Luke Evans and Sung Kang as the male leads, this tale of a DEA agent venturing East to battle a crime syndicate raises expectations of flashy chase and fight scenes. Those are duly met, even if the script Huang and Besson have devised is flimsy stuff. These 100 minutes offer the kind of energetic, no-brainer fun you may remember little of the morning after — but...

Weekend in Taipei Review — Luke Evans Stars in an Exhilarating Action Film!
Image
It is almost fitting that George Huang’s Weekend in Taipei comes out nearly 30 years after his razor-sharp and ruthless black comedy, Swimming with the Sharks. You just have to wonder what took his son so long to make another movie. That biting, back-stabbing comedy still holds up and showcases the talents of a filmmaker who can embed comedy within any genre.

I mention this because Weekend in Taipei is a comedy wrapped in an action film. This doesn’t mean the movie’s tone is uneven or unsure of itself—far from it. While Huang’s script occasionally stumbles into a few tropes, like Luc Besson’s mysterious character arc or a Parent Trap-esque subplot, the experience is refreshing, super cool, funny, and ultimately one hell of a ride.

'I Love to Disappear': Luke Evans Tells Why He Made Weekend in Taipei Movie
Image
Luke Evans is a natural fit for Weekend in Taipei. The actor knows his way around action movies, whether it's playing the dangerous Owen Shaw in multiple Fast & Furious films or sinking his teeth into the title role in Dracula Untold. In his latest high-stakes effort, he portrays John Lawlor, a federal agent who's spent ages on the trail of drug lord Kwang. However, just as he nears his goal, Lawlor learns that he has a child with the woman he left behind 15 years ago -- who's also entangled with Kwang.

In an interview with Cbr, Evans discussed what attracted him to the part of John Lawlor and what he focused on to separate Lawlor from other movie action heroes. He also reflected on reuniting with co-writer and producer Luc Besson, whom he previously collaborated with on the spy thriller Anna, and the role that Taiwanese culture played in...

Image
Weekend in Taipei debuts with a middling Rotten Tomatoes score. Directed by George Huang, with a script he co-wrote with Luc Besson, the new action film follows a DEA agent who falls in love with a Taipei-based transporter, though their relationship is cut short due to their involvement in crime and corruption cases, and 15 years later, they reunite during a fateful weekend in Taipei. The cast includes two Fast & Furious franchise stars, Luke Evans and Sung Kang, alongside Gwei Lun-mei, Wyatt Yang, Tuo Tsung-hua, Lu Yi-ching, and Patrick Lee.

Now, following its theatrical release in North America, the new action film has debuted with a middling Rotten Tomatoes score. Weekend in Taipei has debuted with a 50% score on Rotten Tomatoes with 12 reviews from critics, which could fluctuate as more come in. With fewer than 50 verified ratings from users, the movie doesn't yet qualify for an audience score.

Luke Evans & Sung Kang Had 'Exhausting' Action Scenes in Weekend in Taipei
Image
Some of the best action films take us around the world and use the beauty of international locations to complement the eloquence (or grittiness) or their fight choreography. A new film from director George Huang (Swimming With Sharks) takes us across the world to Taiwan but features some action stars you'll instantly recognize from one of the most successful American action franchises. Famed actors Luke Evans and Sung Kang previously co-starred in multiple Fast & Furious films, but in Weekend in Taipei out this week they're not exactly portraying allies.

Evans plays John, a disgruntled DEA agent who refuses to quit a job that ultimately reconnects him with the long-lost Taiwan-set family he once left behind, while Kang plays Kwang, the villainous career criminal who has since taken John's family under his wing. MovieWeb recently caught up with the cast to learn more about the thrills of tackling their respective roles.

Weekend In Taipei Review: This Exciting, Charismatic Action Thriller Is Unexpectedly Funny
Image
Perhaps the most unexpected thing about Weekend in Taipei is its humor. I went into the film knowing there would be a lot of action, a sprinkling of romance, and a family plot, but the comedy sometimes through dialogue and sometimes situational took me by surprise. Immediately I knew this was a film that wasnt about to take itself so seriously, and I could get on board with that. Directed by George Huang from a screenplay by him and Luc Besson, Weekend in Taipei isnt without its faults, but its charming, well-shot, thrilling, and, above all, entertaining.

Luke Evans and Sung Kang, both well-known for their roles in the Fast & Furious franchise, finally get to share the screen together in a film co-written and produced by genre legend Luc Besson. But the star power isn't the only draw: this isn't the prototypical action movie -- most notably in the way it handles its Asian characters and culture.

With the film's Nov. 8 release date on the horizon, Cbr spoke to Weekend in Taipei director/co-writer George Huang and Sung Kang about their favorite aspects of the project. The duo also dished on what it was like for them to collaborate on set and the importance of the Taiwanese community in making the movie. Plus, is it really more fun playing a villain than a hero?

Luke Evans Comments on Jason Statham Playing His Brother in Fast & Furious
Image
One look at a movie star like Luke Evans, and there's no surprise why he's led the charge in an onslaught of action films over the years. In his latest Asia-centered effort, Weekend in Taipei, he shows off his impressive physique to pummel an endless line of villains as a rogue DEA agent out for blood as he protects his makeshift family of sorts. Action-movie diehards will also remember Evans from multiple films in the Fast & Furious franchise as Owen Shaw, brother to Jason Statham's beloved character. Despite being bros, the two actors never really spent time together off-screen.

Evans noted in a recent MovieWeb interview that he did not, in fact, spend any time preparing with co-star Statham to ensure that they would authentically portray brothers on the big screen. "But Jason's great, and he's fun, and he's a nice human being. I enjoy being on set with him.

Weekend in Taipei Review: Luke Evans and Sung Kang reunite in this action thriller
Image
Plot: On a deep undercover assignment in Taipei, DEA agent John Lawlor was doing everything right… until he fell in love with his informant, beautiful Josephine “Joey” Kwang, one of the Asian underworld’s best transport drivers. Compromised and cover blown, John was forced to flee. Now, years later, John is back in Taipei for the weekend. But is he here to finish the job? Or to win back Joey’s love?

Review: Luke Evans is one of those actors who I always thought deserved to star in an action franchise. His James Bond-esque good looks and debonair stature made him a natural in The Hobbit franchise and The Fast Saga. Having appeared in supporting roles over the last few years, his last significant lead being 2017’s Professor Marston and the Wonder Women, Evans makes a case for headlining more action vehicles with Weekend in Taipei. Co-written by The Transporter and Taken creator Luc Besson,...

Weekend In Taipei's George Huang & Sung Kang Talk Directorial Return, Working With Luc Besson & Complex Villain
Image
George Huang is back in the director's chair after a little over 20 years and is bringing Sung Kang with him in Weekend in Taipei. Huang had first broken out with the 1994 Hollywood satire Swimming with Sharks, which he wrote, directed and was the dialogue editor and sound effects editor, though after helming the romantic comedy Trojan War and sci-fi thriller How To Make a Monster, he would largely put directing on hold. He would, however, continue to work behind the scenes in a variety of capacities, including as a creative consultant on multiple Robert Rodriguez movies.

Kang has been on a steady rise to fame since his breakout turn in Justin Lin's Better Luck Tomorrow as Han Lue, a role that, thanks to Lin, he would carry on into the Fast and Furious franchise beginning with Tokyo Drift and has played all the way through the current films, save...

Weekend In Taipei's Luke Evans On Relatable Action Hero Character & Collaborating With Stunt Team For Fights
Image
Luke Evans is a DEA agent whose personal connection to a case becomes all the more complicated in Weekend in Taipei. Having first found success on the stage with a variety of West End productions, Evans quickly rose to stardom on screen with supporting roles in the Clash of the Titans remake and Ridley Scott's Robin Hood, as well as Immortals, The Raven and Peter Jackson's Hobbit trilogy. More recently, Evans has found further success starring in the live-action Beauty and the Beast remake as Gaston, the Fast and the Furious franchise as Owen Shaw and Nine Perfect Strangers, among other titles.

Evans stars in Weekend in Taipei as John Lawlor, a Drug Enforcement Administration agent who has been on the trail of drug cartel boss Kwang for the better part of 13 years, often to the chagrin of his bosses. When an operation goes awry and John's asked to take a vacation,...

Recasting Freddy Krueger For A Nightmare On Elm Street: 9 Actors Who Can Replace Robert Englund
Image
Though no one has been confirmed, several possible actors could replace Robert Englund as Freddy Krueger in A Nightmare on Elm Street. Englund portrayed Kreuger in eight different feature film installments of the Elm Street franchise, as well as the television show, Freddy's Nightmares. Though Englund has retired from acting as Freddy, due to his age and the role demands, no other actor is yet set to replace the legend. There hasn't been an official update to the franchise in over a decade, with Englund's last appearance as Krueger being a guest role in The Goldbergs in 2018.

Unlike other slasher killers, like Michael Myers or Jason Voorhees, Freddy Krueger speaks a lot, giving him quite the personality, full of iconic one-liners. This means finding a replacement for the villain is difficult, since fans of the franchise have a very clear idea of Freddy's personality. Freddy's personality is also established to...

After a mixed reception to the most recent installment, Fast & Furious 11 is confirmed to be on the way, and it could end up being the final installment in the Fast Saga.

During a recent interview with Screen Rant, Brewster is asked what she knows about Fast & Furious 11's filming timeline, revealing that she's not yet aware of when production might start.
