Since exploding onto screens way back in 2008, Liam Neeson’s Taken has had a lasting impact on the world of action movies. And that impact continues, with an all-new action thriller taking some cues from director Pierre Morel and writers Luc Besson and Robert Mark Kamen’s tale of a former CIA agent on a mission to rescue his kidnapped daughter. A tale that transformed Neeson into the quintessential aged action hero.
Now, the upcoming action thriller On the Hunt will put a female-led spin on proceedings, with Australian actress Nicky Whelan(The Flood) following in Bryan Mills’ footsteps as an ex-special forces operative who brings her particular set of skills out of retirement after her daughter is abducted by human traffickers. You'd think that these capable action heroes would be able to keep a better eye on their kids...

The ’80s were a heyday for the underdog. Whether the arena was the corporate workplace or the hormone hurricane of high school, bullies and their respective comeuppances were ubiquitous in the decade’s cinematic offerings. 1984’s The Karate Kid was one of the most popular David vs. Goliath offerings on the big screen, and its legacy goes way beyond fly-hunting with chopsticks, or beachfront training montages, or its litany of catchphrases. Through sequels, reboots and small screen re-invention, the legend of The Karate Kid spans decades, and continues to inspire and delight each new generation as they meet life’s great challenges.

Cannon Films weren’t satisfied with their 1988 martial arts tournament movie Bloodsport, but when they reluctantly sent it out into the world in 1988 it proved to be a big hit, launching Jean-Claude Van Damme’s career as an action hero. The film was followed by three sequels, none of which starred Van Damme – and for the last couple of decades, there have been rumblings about a revival. Twenty years ago, Bloodsport co-writer Sheldon Lettich tried to get a film called Bloodsport: A New Beginning off the ground, but the project fell apart. In 2011, Phillip Noyce (Dead Calm) was attached to direct a “reinvention,” working from a screenplay by The Karate Kid creator Robert Mark Kamen. In 2013, James McTeigue (V for Vendetta) replaced Noyce at the helm. The project never made it into production. In 2019, there was a rumor that John Wick directors David Leitch and Chad Stahelski were considering making a Bloodsport remake.

The Karate Kid movies are a cultural touchstone that truly nailed the coming-of-age story and seamlessly blended it with the elements and philosophy of martial arts. But the third installment could have taken the franchise to a new direction, and we would have possibly seen Ralph Macchio in a new avatar.

The Transporter series introduced everyone’s favorite action hero, Jason Statham, and one of the sequels in the fan-favorite series is all set to stream for free. Released back in 2008, Transporter 3 was panned upon release (earning just 40% from critics and 48% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes) but nonetheless boasts the flair for fist-fighting that The Stath fans have come to know and love.
Directed by Olivier Megaton and written by Luc Besson and Robert Mark Kamen, Transporter 3 finds Statham’s expert driver and courier paired with Valentina (Natalya Rudakova), the cynical daughter of a Ukrainian official. Transporter 3 is now due to land on free streaming platform Tubi from March 1, 2025.

Editor's Note: The following contains spoilers for the end of Cobra Kai.After 65 episodes spread throughout six seasons, The Karate Kid legacy sequel series, Cobra Kai, has come to a close on Netflix. Since the conclusion of John G. Avildsen's The Karate Kid trilogy starring Ralph Macchio, the franchise has attempted to continue in different ways. The Next Karate Kid kept Pat Morita as Mr. Miyagi but featured Hilary Swank as the new titular kid studying under him. Although it's considered Swank's breakout role, the film was not well received by critics and fans. 16 years later, a remake starring Jackie Chanand Jaden Smith was made with original Karate Kid writer Robert Mark Kamen returning to pen the story. Although titled The Karate Kid, the film featured kung fu instead of karate as the martial arts style. Even though it was a strange decision, that didn't stop the movie...

The Karate Kid franchise started as a film series in 1984, but. After several successful films, the universe was brought back to life in 2018 with the series Cobra Kai, which ended after six seasons.
The original series was created by Robert Mark Kamen, but Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz, and Hayden Schlossberg took the universe to the small screen, bringing back several key characters. The new series followed Ralph Macchio and William Zabka as the main characters, reprising their roles as Daniel Larusso and Johnny Lawrence. Throughout the series, many actors from the films reprised their roles in main, guest, or recurring roles, but co-creator Jon Hurwitz told ScreenRant which cameo they wished they had in the series finale.

Schwarzenegger. Stallone. Van Damme. Gibson. Snipes. Ford. When you make a list of the most popular action heroes of all time, there’s another name that needs to be added to that list – Liam Neeson. Over the last sixteen years, he’s headlined a neverending series of action thrillers that have propelled him to a much higher echelon of fame than he’d ever been on before, with him only ever becoming an action star once he was fifty-six. Ultimately, it was all due to a low-budget, European-financed action flick, which came very close to going direct-to-video and reached theatres in Europe a full year before it opened in North America. That movie is Taken, and we’re going to tell you how it revitalized the career of a man who – at the time – was generally considered a top-tier character actor with limited box office appeal. That’s right – it...

At this point, it feels like when any chapter of "The Karate Kid" franchise gets stirred up, it can't be without the pelican-kicking pro, Ralph Macchio. The original Karate Kid, Daniel Larusso, returned alongside his old foe Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka) for "Cobra Kai," and together they helped the show become as successful as the movies, if not more so. But back when the franchise was still a trilogy, what stopped Macchio returning for "The Next Karate Kid," where he was instead replaced with Hilary Swank?
Macchio assured Uproxx that it wasn't a matter of rejecting an offer -- he simply never got the call. Thankfully, he had no animosity towards his co-star, Pat Morita, who played the masterful Mr. Miyagi. "I heard they were making the movie. Balance isn't just something that martial arts virtuoso Mr. Miyagi likes to harp about to his students in the "Karate Kid" franchise; it's also crucial to what makes the property tick. Director John G. Avildsen and writer Robert Mark Kamen's original 1984 "Karate Kid" film established the template for the movies and shows that followed, mixing the gritty realism of Avildsen's other sports classic, "Rocky," with lively martial arts fights and borderline cartoonish antagonists. At their best, these tales of troubled, scrappy teenage underdogs studying karate under the tutelage of Miyagai and his disciples are rousing coming-of-age sagas capable of presenting heavy subject matter in a crowd-pleasing package. At their worst, they still offer invaluable life lessons, even when they veer into the realm of self-parody.
On the whole, "Karate Kid" enthusiasts tend to agree about the franchise's high and low points. The original "Karate Kid" is still generally regarded...

Dumbledore probably isn't the first character that action legend Jackie Chan would be compared to by moviegoers. However, the Harry Potter character is exactly who Karate Kid: Legends director Jonathan Entwistle believes Chan channeled while on the set of the forthcoming legacy sequel.
This surprising comparison was revealed after Entertainment Weekly asked Entwistle to describe Chan's presence on the Legends set. "Apart from being a wonderful human being who is very warm, he is the type of actor that does not leave. When his day is done, you would often find him sitting next to me, sitting next to the Dp, telling stories, talking to the actors," Entwistle shared. "Jackie Chan is a movie star, and that is something that you don't see so much anymore. He had the ability to come up with a tiny idea that I'd never thought of — and all of Jackie's tiny ideas are in the movie.

"Cobra Kai" has had a good run, but season 6 finally brings it to the finish line. "Cobra Kai's" final season is split into three parts, with two of them already available on Netflix and the final one premiering on February 13, 2025. In an interview with Entertainment Tonight (via People), "Cobra Kai" co-showrunner Josh Heald confirmed that the show ending at this exact stage is completely intentional, seeing as it had a clear arc from the beginning -- at least for the major characters.
"We did always know how the show was going to end to a degree. For the bigger characters, we did know how it was going to end. We never could have predicted just how many characters we would acquire along the way who deserve their own bombastic endings as well."

With its dramatic Sekai Taikai tournament, the final three-part season of Netflix's martial arts comedy-drama "Cobra Kai" is proving to be a fittingly epic conclusion to the series. As it happens, however, the "Karate Kid" franchise may yet continue on the small screen once the dust settles. In fact, "Cobra Kai" creators and showrunners Hayden Schlossberg, Josh Heald, and Jon Hurwitz already have a lock on the character they want to explore next -- and in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, they revealed that it's none other than the series' centerpiece, Mr. Miyagi.
What's more, the trio has already started working towards the goal of a potential Miyagi prequel series by briefly digitally resurrecting "The Karate Kid" actor Pat Morita with AI on "Cobra Kai," in addition to dropping numerous clues that Miyagi's past might be far more complicated than his prize pupil Daniel Larusso (Ralph Macchio) ever knew.

There have been mentions of a show for a while now that will be set before The Karate Kid, and Cobra Kai season 6 has provided the perfect opportunity for Netflix to greenlight the show. Part 2 of Cobra Kai's final season did something that no one expected and found a way to bring back Mr. Miyagi, but in such a creative way that it could easily be moved on from without any major narrative issues. However, the key addition to Cobra Kai season 6, part 2's cast could be instrumental to the franchise's future.
Mr. Miyagi has appeared in almost every Karate Kid movie, with the only omission coming in Jackie Chan's The Karate Kid in 2010 - which, at the time, was a remake of the original. With Chan's movie now canonized and Miyagi's cameo in Cobra Kai, the 2010 effort remains the only franchise installment not to feature the character made famous by Pat Morita.

Karate Kid and Cobra Kai star Ralph Macchio has stated that the upcoming Karate Kid: Legends will honor the legacy of Pat Morita's iconic Mr. Miyagi. Macchio will return to reprise the role of Daniel Larusso alongside Jack Chan's Mr. Han, and the actor also teased his character's arc for the upcoming Karate Kid movie installment.
In an interview with Screen Rant, Macchio explained staying true to the core of Daniel, which has endured since his introduction in the original Karate Kid through to Cobra Kai, as the character continues to grow and come to terms with the real legacy of his mentor Mr. Miyagi. "Well, I can't go into detail on it at this point, but one of the things of the choices I've made from back in 1983 was always to play the truth of Daniel Larusso, and the honesty, even with all his flaws," he said.

Stars: Sung Kang, Lun-Mei Gwei, Luke Evans, Wyatt Yang | Written by George Huang, Luc Besson | Directed by George Huang
The poster for Weekend in Taipei bills it as “From the creator of Taken and The Transporter”. That’s another way of saying Luc Besson, who co-wrote both of those hits with Robert Mark Kamen, co-wrote this film’s script. However, his co-writer this time is the film’s director George Huang, who seems like an odd choice having not directed since he helmed several episodes of American Heiress in 2007. His last credit as a writer was the faux sequel Hard Target 2 in 2016.
In Taipei, mob boss Kwang is going on trial. At the same time that he’s proclaiming his innocence to the gathered reporters, his wife Joey is buying a new Ferrari. After a suitably fast test drive through the streets of Taipei, of course.

The comedy-drama series, Cobra Kai, is a great watch for those who grew up watching The Karate Kid films by Robert Mark Kamen. The television series tells the Karate Kid narrative from Johnny Lawrence’s point of view who is played by William Zabka. One of the most prominent parts of the show has been its bullying, something that almost every kid at West Valley High School has experienced.

Coming-of-age films have been around for decades, but they seemed to really hit their stride in the 1980s. Films centering around first love, outsiders and bullying rose in popularity throughout the decade, and one of the most beloved turns 40 years old this summer. “The Karate Kid” opened June 22, 1984 and unleashed a new idol for teens to adore, boosted the popularity of martial arts in the U.S. and skillfully delivered the lesson that inner strength is just as powerful (even more so) as outer strength. Let’s take a look back at a classic that proved that a film doesn’t have to have big name stars to become a blockbuster. Read on for more about “The Karate Kid” 40th anniversary.

The Karate Kid franchise started with a simple movie that became a huge success and led to sequels, a remake, and a spinoff TV show.
