Big Finish is finally entering current Doctor Who continuity with the Unit Extinction adventures, but what does that mean?
During Doctor Who’s 50th anniversary celebrations, everybody had their own favourite moments. Maybe yours was seeing Matt Smith and David Tennant sparring with each other. Maybe it was the “all thirteen!” moment on Gallifrey, seeing Tom Baker turn up at the end to say “Hi! I’m Tom Baker! How cool is that?”, or watching Peter Davison and Colin Baker try and break into the BBC. There was no shortage of punch-the-air moments for fans. But as someone who spent nearly every moment of the anniversary bouncing up and down and literally clapping my hands with glee, the highpoint came towards the end of Paul McGann’s Eighth Doctor short, The Night of the Doctor. Just before he regenerates, he utters the words “Charlie, C'rizz, Lucy, Tamsin, Molly, friends, companions I've known,...

With series 8 referencing 'heaven', Nathan traces Doctor Who's varied relationships with atheism and faith...
I was a massive Simpsons fan as a child. And when I say ‘massive’, I really do mean - huge. It’s still one of the more memorable moments prior to my wedding day: emptying out my childhood bedroom with my (now) wife, only for her to discover notebooks filled with minute observations about the show. Obscure number plates, birthdays of secondary characters, dates of key events and much more besides. Having already paid for the reception venue she couldn’t exactly retract her commitment to marry me, although my mind contemplated that possibility when she hyperventilated laughing at ‘little Nathan’, circa 1999.
My point is this: I wasn’t just a fan, I was an über-fan.
You might be asking, “what’s this got to do with Doctor Who?” - trust me, I’m getting there.

Dakota Fanning photographed by Matt Jones
I totally forgot it was Easter but appropos of nothing I did wake up this morning wondering where Dakota Fanning went to. Where ya been, girl? Didn't you film Effie like 2 years ago? And no the Twilight films don't count so you've really been slacking since The Runaways (2010).
Or it seems like it. Do you think Dakota can pull a Jodie and become an important adult actress? The 19 year-old star does seem to be challenging herself with multiple genres and adult topics. Will the next two years be big for her? Up next: The Motel Life a thriller with Stephen Dorff (DVD release?), Very Good Girls a loss of virginity drama with Elisabeth Olsen, Night Moves from acclaimed indie auteur Kelly Reichardt about young environmentalists, Effie a period romantic drama biopic that seems like it films years ago, and the Hollywood scandal drama The...

Oxygen kicks off its modeling competition The Face tonight,
to keep things simple, it's airing on the same night and time as Face Off.
News
G4 will soon be gone from your cable line-up, replaced by The Esquire Network which aims to be "an upscale Bravo for men." The new channel's first show will be Knife Fight a cooking competition show hosted by Top Chef winner Ilan Hall, who absolutely no one was demanding to see on TV again. The network will also heavily feature Adam Scott with reruns of Parks & Recreation and Party Down. I have little interest in any show that brings back anyone from that awful second season of Top Chef (because I watched it once and Never Again), but I can suport putting plenty of Adam Scott on TV.

The social media response to the Alan Jones saga is uplifting, argues Matt Jones
When thousands warn a brand they will buy a competitor product unless the brand ceases funding content they find offensive, is that really 21st Century censorship? Or just consumers expressing a preference?
When those same people use social media to amplify their voices, accelerating and multiplying the impact of their purchase intentions, is that cyber bullying? Or just consumers seeking to shape the world they live in, not just shop it?
Like most people, there are things I don’t like about the world and would like to change (or at least influence). But how to be heard?
I can vote. But voting is a limited way of expressing personal views. For one, you don’t get to vote very often. For another, you don’t get many votes. So expressing complex, balanced, multifaceted views is hard through voting alone.

Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss unloaded a lot of shells during the famous lobby shootout sequence in "The Matrix," but now they Are the shells. Whoa.
YouTube auteur Matt Jones directed this clever little clip of Neo and Trinity machine-gunning their way through a refrigerator as peanuts with little sunglasses drawn on them. Yes, peanuts.
As part of an elaborate production design challenge, Jones simply replaced the metal detectors with a couple Yoplait yogurts and the columns with cucumbers. If only the Wachowskis had thought that up in 1999 it might have saved them and Warner Bros. a few million in set construction.
The audio from the original scene is still intact, so why not watch Legume Keanu (still a bit stiff in the acting department) spread mayhem as he turns a bunch of peanuts into peanut butter. Even in nut form, it still looks pretty sweet.

"British cartoonist Ronald Searle, best known for his spiky drawings of the tearaway pupils of the fictional girls school St Trinian's, has died in southern France aged 91," reports Tim Castle for Reuters. Searle passed away on Friday, but the family waited a few days to make their announcement. "His spindly schoolgirl creations, which first appeared in 1941, hit the big screen in 1954 as The Belles of St Trinian's, with Alastair Sim starring in drag as headmistress Millicent Fritton. The film franchise was revived in 2007, with Rupert Everett taking over the headmistress role, with a follow-up, St Trinian's 2: The Legend of Fritton's Gold, appearing in 2009…. His work was recognized internationally, and he won a number of awards from America's National Cartoonists Society. In France, where he lived since 1961, he was awarded the country's prestigious Legion d'Honneur."

If you're interested in the concepts of faith and religion, then you may be surprised to find that you could learn a thing or two from Doctor Who. The everyday guys 'n' gals may think of it as a sci-fi adventure roundabout, but one of the great things about the show is that a lot of the time, it's subtly educating the viewers too. Everything you could want to know about the world is actually included in Doctor Who's long tapestry – money, power, capitalism, vivisection, ecology – only a handful of a lengthy list of worthy topics up for grabs.
And one of the big daddies of discussion is religion and faith. Doctor Who has and always will be a show that promotes good over evil – but quite a few stories have looked at the concepts of religious beliefs in greater detail. We've had the subtle Buddhism message of Planet Of The Spiders.

Mad Norwegian Press has announced that Time, Unincorporated 2, the second in a series of fanzine article collections, will see print in May 2010. Previously titled "Classic Series Cornucopia," Volume 2 will actually see print under the title "Writings on the Classic Series," while the forthcoming Volume 3 will be "Writings on the New Series." Volume 2 of this series contains nearly 75 essays that examine every era of the classic Doctor Who series that ran from 1963-1989, as well as the Fox TV movie (1996). The essays stem from a wide array of venerable fanzines such as Enlightenment, Shockeye’s Kitchen, Burnt Toast, Faze, Dark Circus, The Whostorian and more. Collectively, the essays derived from these sources form one of the most diverse compilations of Doctor Who writing ever produced.
