Pedro Almodóvar Joins Los Javis in ‘Pedro x Javis,’ a Career Tribute Docuseries From Movistar+
Image
This June, Movistar Plus+ will unveil “Pedro x Javis,” a three-part documentary series paying tribute to the life and work of celebrated Spanish filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar. Created and hosted by celebrated filmmakers Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi, known locally as Los Javis, the series blends documentary storytelling with musical performances and reimagined scenes from Almodóvar’s films in a bold new format.

At the heart of “Pedro x Javis” is an intimate, in-depth conversation between the three directors. Filmed over several days, their exchanges are rich with unexpected confessions, emotional memories, and previously unrevealed insights into the two-time Academy Award winner’s creative journey. “I think I’ve talked too much,” Almodóvar wryly commented on the process.

The series features contributions from many of Almodóvar’s most iconic collaborators, including actresses Penélope Cruz, Julieta Serrano, Rossy de Palma, Bibiana Fernández, Loles León, Carmen Machi, Lola Dueñas and Leonor Watling. It...

Image
Biographical drama El 47 and thriller La Infiltrada tied for the top prize at the 39th Goya Awards held in Spain. Meanwhile, Pedro Almodóvar’s The Room Next Door, with Tilda Swinton and Julianne Moore, which was shut out of the Best Film contest, took home three prizes.

Meanwhile, I’m Still Here, with Fernanda Torres, won Best Ibero-American Film.

The Spanish equivalent of the Oscars, the Academia de Cine unveiled its list of nominations back in December: Marcel Barrena’s El 47 led the pack with 14 mentions, followed by La Infiltrada at 13 nods.

The Room Next Door (2025) – Review
Image
This weekend sees the wider release of a film that would probably be referred to as “Oscar bait” since it stars two actresses who have that “golden guy” and it’s directed by a beloved and celebrated filmmaker. With the latter, this shares a similar distinction with another lauded “end of the year” work, Emilia Perez. No, this isn’t a musical. The common thread is that Perez was made by a French director who is telling a story in the Spanish language, while this new release has a Spanish helmer working completely in English for the very first time after nearly half of a century in cinema. And though it’s set in today’s modern world it harkens back to the movies of Hollywood’s Golden Age”. It becomes clear to cinephiles the moment they enter (if it’s ajar…a big plot point) The Room Next Door.

Julianne Moore and Tilda Swinton in The Room Next Door (2024)
Spain’s Goya Nominations: Pedro Almodóvar’s ‘The Room Next Door’ Snubbed for Best Picture
Julianne Moore and Tilda Swinton in The Room Next Door (2024)
The Spanish film academy gave a surprise snub to its best-known director when Pedro Almodóvar’s The Room Next Door was not nominated for best film for the Goya Film Awards, Spain’s equivalent to the Oscars.

The Room Next Door picked up 13 Goya nominations, including best director for Almodóvar and best acting nominations for both of the film’s leads, Tilda Swinton and Julianne Moore, but the film was left out of the best picture category. Perhaps the language barrier — it’s Almodóvar’s first English-language feature — counted against it among Spanish academy voters.

Instead, the Goya’s best picture race will include five Spanish-language features: Casa en flames from director Dani de la Orden, Marcel Barrena’s El 47, La estrella azul from Javier Macipe, Arantxa Echevarría’s La infiltrada, and Segundo premio from director Isaki Lacuesta and Pol Rodríguez, which was Spain’s official Oscar submission this year.

The Best Scores & Soundtracks of 2024
Image
As Martin Scorsese once said, “Music and cinema fit together naturally. Because there’s a kind of intrinsic musicality to the way moving images work when they’re put together. It’s been said that cinema and music are very close as art forms, and I think that’s true.” The right piece of music––whether an original score or a carefully selected song––can do wonders for a sequence, and today we’re looking at the 25 films that best expressed that notion in 2024.

From seasoned composers to accomplished musicians, as well as a smattering of soundtracks, each perfectly transported us. Check out our rundown of the top 25, which includes streams to each soundtrack in full where available.

Alec Guinness, Ian Richardson, Bernard Hepton, and Terence Rigby in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (1979)
Here’s Why Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy is One of the Greatest Spy Movies of the 21st Century
Alec Guinness, Ian Richardson, Bernard Hepton, and Terence Rigby in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (1979)
Few spy films delve into the murky waters of human psychology and institutional intrigue as masterfully as Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. Tomas Alfredson’s 2011 adaptation of John le Carré’s classic novel remains a towering achievement in the espionage genre, eschewing high-octane action for a meticulous, cerebral dissection of loyalty, betrayal, and the heavy toll of a life lived in shadows. This isn’t just a spy thriller—it’s a character-driven masterpiece that redefined the modern spy film.

The story begins with a chilling premise: there is a mole at the highest levels of British Intelligence, known as “The Circus.” When disgraced operative Ricki Tarr (Tom Hardy) stumbles upon evidence of the betrayal, retired agent George Smiley (Gary Oldman) is drawn out of forced retirement to root out the double agent. Smiley, a man of few words but piercing intellect, embarks on a methodical investigation that peels back layers...

Hans Zimmer’s ‘Dune: Part Two’ score is ruled ineligible for Oscars consideration
Image
The Academy won’t release its official shortlists until later this year, but one presumed contender for Best Score has already missed the cut.

On Tuesday, Variety confirmed Hans Zimmer’s score for “Dune: Part Two” is ineligible for Oscar consideration next year due to its reliance on pre-existing music.

“In cases such as sequels and franchises from any media, the score must not use more than 20% of pre-existing themes and music borrowed from previous scores in the franchise,” reads the Academy’s rules on the matter. Being a sequel to “Dune,” Zimmer used many of the same motifs and themes for the film’s blockbuster sequel, thus the disqualification.

The loss of Zimmer’s “Dune: Part Two” score was already anticipated by many online, particularly after the newly launched Warner Bros. FYC website had left Best Score off its list of categories for “Dune: Part Two.” The original film won Zimmer Best Score,...

2025 Oscar Predictions: Best Original Score
Image
Of all the below-the-line categories at the Oscars, Best Original Score is the most difficult to predict early on due to the finicky nature of the music branch of the academy. Scores that sound like frontrunners are disqualified for a variety of reasons, from the number of credited composers to the amount of previously recorded music used. (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2025 Oscar predictions for Best Original Score.)

Starting with the 2019 Oscars, the academy released a shortlist of 15 contenders. We got this year’s roster of semi-finalists on December 17, 2024. A second round of voting by the members of the music branch, again using preferential voting, will cut these 15 down to the final five nominees. These will be announced, along with the final contenders in all of the other competitive categories on January 17. The entire voting membership of the academy will then vote for the winners, which will be revealed...

The Room Next Door TIFF Review — Pedro Almodóvar’s English Feature Debut Is Slight but Interesting
Image
Spanish filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar has become one of the most beloved auteurs in international cinema with his unique brand of delicious melodramas. His latest film, The Room Next Door, is his first feature in English (following his short Strange Way of Life). Starring Julianne Moore and Tilda Swinton, Almodóvar’s film has a ton of very strong elements, and while they don’t all come together as well as one would hope, his latest work is still engaging and compelling.

The Room Next Door Review

Based on the novel What Are You Going Through by Sigrid Nunez, The Room Next Door follows two longtime friends who, after having drifted apart, are drawn back together when one of them receives a terminal diagnosis and decides to end their own life. Throughout their final days together, they reminisce about the past and their relationships, trying to make amends with each other and themselves.

Will ‘The Room Next Door’ Bring Pedro Almodóvar His First Best Picture Nomination and Tilda Swinton’s Second Oscar?
Image
The Oscars will surely knock on Pedro Almodóvar’s door this awards season.

Pedro Almodóvar’s expansive filmography has shaped international cinema for over four decades. With his English-language directorial debut, “The Room Next Door,” fresh off winning the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival, the Spanish auteur and distributor Sony Pictures Classics are setting their sights on landing Almodóvar’s first best picture nomination.

Adapted from Sigrid Nunez’s novel “What Are You Going Through,” the film follows two women — war correspondent Martha (Tilda Swinton) and author Ingrid (Julianne Moore) — who reunite after years apart under challenging circumstances.

Almodóvar’s body of work has garnered widespread acclaim within the Academy. “All About My Mother” (1999) won the Oscar for international feature, while “Talk to Her” (2002) earned him two noms for directing and original screenplay,...

‘The Room Next Door’ Review: Almodóvar’s English Language Euthanasia Dramedy Is Surprisingly Tame [Venice]
Image
It is clear that “The Room Next Door” is a Pedro Almodóvar film. It features strong female heroines in Tilda Swinton’s Martha and Julianne Moore’s Ingrid and a striking use of color, with a heavy presence of bright reds and greens accompanied by Alberto Iglesias’s vibrant melodramatic score. Still, there is something not quite right about this one Almodóvar film, a dramedy that emulates all that makes a story Almodovarian but bypasses its essence entirely.

The 30 Best Movie Scores of the 2000s
Image
This article is part of IndieWire’s 2000s Week celebration. Click here for a whole lot more.

If the movies of the 2000s were defined by a period of violent transition (both onscreen and off), the music that was written for those movies captured the full sweep of that change — and the endless possibilities it allowed for in turn. The aughts were absent a single identifying element as strong to the decade as synths were to the ’80s or symphonic grandeur was to the ’90s, and to judge by our list of the period’s best scores it sounds like they might have been all the better for it.

On the one hand, the 2000s saw venerated masters like John Williams and Terence Blanchard deliver some of the greatest work of their careers, while journeyman like “Lord of the Rings” composer Howard Shore emerged into legendary status with a single...

Pedro Almodóvar’s ‘Strange Way of Life’ Sets October Theatrical Debut from Sony Classics
Image
Ethan Hawke and Pedro Pascal’s queer cowboy love story will be coming to a theater near you soon.

The short film “Strange Way of Life,” written and directed by Pedro Almodóvar, will be released by Sony Pictures Classics in New York City and Los Angeles on October 4, followed by a nationwide release October 6. The short film will play alongside Almodóvar’s past 2020 short “The Human Voice” starring Tilda Swinton.

Both “The Human Voice” and “Strange Way of Life” are Almodóvar’s only English-language projects to date. Sony Pictures Classics acquired “Strange Way” in pre-production. Mubi took rights in Italy and Latin America out of Cannes, where the film premiered this past May.

Produced by Almodóvar’s El Deseo and presented by Saint Laurent by Anthony Vaccarello, the film co-stars Pedro Casablanc, Manu Ríos, George Steane, José Condessa, Jason Fernández, and Sara Sálamo. Four-time Oscar nominee and longtime Almodóvar collaborator Alberto Iglesias scored the film,...

Sony Pictures Classics Releasing Pedro Almodóvar’s Short ‘Strange Way Of Life’
Image
Pedro Almodóvar’s short film, Strange Way of Life, which had its world premiere at Cannes back in the spring, is hitting theaters in NYC and LA on Oct. 4 thanks to Sony Pictures Classics.

There will be an expansion nationwide on Oct. 6.

Pic stars Ethan Hawke and Pedro Pascal and will play in theaters alongside Almodóvar’s 2020 short film, The Human Voice, starring Tilda Swinton, which was also distributed by Sony Pictures Classics. Together, the two shorts represent Almodóvar’s only English-language projects to date.

Strange Way of Life follows two gunmen who reunite after many years. In the film, a man rides a horse across the desert that separates him from Bitter Creek. He comes to visit Sheriff Jake. Twenty-five years earlier, both the sheriff and Silva, the rancher who rides out to meet him, worked together as hired gunmen. Silva visits him with the excuse of reuniting with his friend from his youth,...

‘Strange Way Of Life’ Review: Pedro Almodóvar’s Short Is Homage To Classic Westerns, But With A Gay Twist Courtesy Of Ethan Hawke And Pedro Pascal
Image
The great Spanish filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar is a rabid fan of the Western genre but until now he had never made one. He had also only dabbled in directing an English-language film with the exception of the 2020 short The Human Voice, which starred Tilda Swinton.

His latest movie is also a short, just 31 minutes, but he finally got to do his Western in English. It’s a nice homage to the form and those great directors who created it, but it is safe to say this homage could only have come from this master of cinema.

Almodóvar brought the finished product to its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival on Wednesday and, if flattered by the attention, the ghosts of John Ford, Howard Hawks, John Sturges, Anthony Mann, Raoul Walsh and Sam Peckinpah may be surprised at the twist that this 73-year-old fanboy has given Strange Way of Life.

Image
Sony Pictures Classics announced that they have acquired worldwide rights to Pedro Almodóvar’s short film, Strange Way Of Life, starring Ethan Hawke and Pedro Pascal.

The film will be screened in the Official Selection and in world premiere at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival, along with the director and the two main actors. Sony Pictures Classics picked up the short in pre-production and will release it this fall.

Strange Way Of Life follows two gunmen who reunite after 25 years. Almodóvar describes the film in his director’s statement: “A man rides a horse across the desert that separates him from Bitter Creek. He comes to visit Sheriff Jake. Twenty-five years earlier, both the sheriff and Silva, the rancher who rides out to meet him, worked together as hired gunmen.

The film, acquired at the pre-production phase, is slated for release this fall and will almost certainly be positioned for awards consideration, given the caliber of talent behind it.

Pedro Pascal and Ethan Hawke Deliver Our Next Great Gay Western in Trailer for Strange Way of Life: Watch
Image
Brokeback Mountain was wonderfully devastating, but Pedro Almodóvar turned down a chance to direct it because it wasn’t the gay western he dreamed of making. Now he’s getting his own shot at a similar story with Strange Way of Life, a 30-minute short starring Pedro Pascal and Ethan Hawke that just debuted its first trailer.

In the clip, we meet Pascal’s cowboy Silva and Hawke’s Sheriff Jake, old friends (or more) who reunite after 25 years. They meet to investigate a murder, not their feelings toward each other, but the trailer still offers plenty of angst. “Years ago you asked me what two men could do living together on a ranch,” Silva says to Jake. “I’ll answer you now.” Check it out below.

Strange Way of Life is set to premiere at Cannes, and features frequent Almodóvar collaborator Alberto Iglesias as composer and producer. The 30-minute...

‘Strange Way of Life’ Trailer: Pedro Pascal and Ethan Hawke Get Intimate in Almodóvar’s Gay Cowboy Drama
Image
Pedro Almodóvar’s queer Western short film “Strange Way of Life” has released its first trailer.

The short, which stars Pedro Pascal and Ethan Hawke, is somewhat akin to a “Brokeback Mountain” revamp, or moreso, a chance for Almodóvar to do finally do it his way. Almost two decades ago, the Spanish filmmaker was offered the opportunity to direct the Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger film, but gave up the offer in fear he wouldn’t have the creative freedom to make the movie how he wanted it.

“This is a queer western in the sense that there are two men, and they love each other, and they behave in that situation in an opposite way,” said Almodóvar on an episode of “Dua Lipa: At Your Service.” “What I can tell you about the film is that it has a lot of the elements of the Western. It has the gunslinger.

‘Strange Way of Life’ trailer: Pedro Pascal and Ethan Hawke star in Pedro Almodovar’s queer cowboy short film [Watch]
Image
“Strange Way of Life,” the new short film from Oscar-winning director Pedro Almodovar, received its first trailer on Wednesday, weeks before its set to premiere as an out-of-competition title at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival.

The film, a queer Western that Almodovar previously said “could be my answer to ‘Brokeback Mountain,” stars Pedro Pascal and Ethan Hawke as a pair of gunslingers who reunite after years apart. Here’s the official synopsis Almodovar provided Cannes: “A man rides a horse across the desert that separates him from Bitter Creek. He comes to visit Sheriff Jake. Twenty-five years earlier, both the sheriff and Silva, the rancher who rides out to meet him, worked together as hired gunmen. Silva visits him with the excuse of reuniting with his friend from his youth, and they do indeed celebrate their meeting, but the next morning Sheriff Jake tells him that the reason for his trip...

Saint Laurent Launches Production Banner With David Cronenberg Movie, Pedro Almodóvar Short
Pedro Almodóvar
The Cannes Film Festival is about to get even more fashionable, as two short films – including Pedro Almodóvar’s highly anticipated “Strange Way of Life” – will debut next month from the newly formed Saint Laurent Productions, a film production banner led by its artistic director Anthony Vaccarello.

Saint Laurent Productions is being described as the first production banner operated by a fashion house, the new outfit is also developing projects by a wide range of diverse filmmakers including Paolo Sorrentino, David Cronenberg, Abel Ferrara, Wong Kar Wai, Jim Jarmusch and Gaspar Noé. The second short film hitting Cannes hasn’t been announced yet; let the speculation begin. The plan is produce two or three films each year, with a possible expansion after that.

Vaccarello became the artistic director of Saint Laurent in 2016. In 2019 “Lux Æterna,” a strobe-heavy 51-minute film directed Noé, premiered at Cannes. Vaccarello was one of the credited...

Pedro Almodóvar’s Gay Western Short ‘Strange Way of Life’ Scores First Deal With Mubi (Exclusive)
Image
Pedro Almodóvar’s hotly anticipated short “Strange Way of Life” has secured its first deal ahead of its Cannes Film Festival world premiere next month.

In the project’s first announced multi-territory deal Mubi — the indie streamer, distributor and producer — has acquired all rights for Italy and Latin America. Pathe will be releasing the film in the U.K. under a longstanding agreement.

Shot in southern Spain’s Tabernas desert, “Strange Way of Life” stars Ethan Hawke and Pedro Pascal as two gunmen who reunite after 25 years. The half-hour film has been described by Almodóvar as a “queer Western, in the sense that there are two men and they love each other,” the director said last December on Dua Lipa’s “At Your Service” podcast.

The short marks Almodóvar’s second foray into English-language filmmaking following Tilda Swinton starrer “The Human Voice” in 2020. “Strange Way of Life” will screen at...

Pedro Almodóvar’s LGBTQ Western ‘Strange Way of Life’ Gets Cannes Premiere
Image
Pedro Almodóvar’s Strange Way of Life, an LGBTQ-themed Western starring Ethan Hawke and Pedro Pascal, will have its world premiere at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival, the festival confirmed Tuesday.

The short, which sees The Northman star Ethan Hawke and The Last of Us‘ Pascal as two middle-aged gunslingers with a deep connection who meet up again after a 25-year separation, was widely tipped to bow on the Croisette. The film is Almodóvar’s second English-language short, after Tilda Swinton-starrer The Human Voice, which premiered at the Venice Film Festival in 2020.

In a statement following the Cannes announcement, Almodóvar gave a cryptic description of the film’s plot:

“A man rides a horse across the desert that separates him from Bitter Creek. He comes to visit Sheriff Jake [Hawke]. Twenty-five years earlier, both the sheriff and Silva [Pascal], the rancher who rides out to meet him, worked together as hired gunmen.

Cannes Confirms Selection Of Pedro Almodóvar’s Ethan Hawke-Starrer ‘Strange Way Of Life’
Image
The Cannes Film Festival has announced that Pedro Almodóvar’s short film Strange Way Of Life will world premiere at its upcoming 76th edition, running May 16 to 27.

The Western shot in southern Spain stars Ethan Hawke and Pedro Pascal and is the filmmaker’s second English-language experience, after The Human Voice in 2020.

The film had been widely expected to play at Cannes after the director told singer-songwriter Dua Lipa that he expected it to premiere the festival in an interview for her At Your Service podcast in January.

The confirmation of the film’s selection comes as Cannes delegate general Thierry Frémaux and his team tie up the 2023 Official Selection ahead of the traditional line-up announcement in Paris on Thursday morning (April 13).

Other titles already confirmed by the festival include the Johnny Depp-starring opening film Jeanne du Barry by Maïwenn, Martin Scorsese’s The Killers Of The Flower Moon...

Pedro Almodovar’s ‘Strange Way of Life’ to World Premiere at Cannes Film Festival
Image
Pedro Almodóvar’s “Strange Way of Life” will world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in the Official Selection. The festival confirmed the news and said Almodovar will attend the premiere with his two lead actors, Ethan Hawke and Pedro Pascal, in attendance. The short marks Almodovar’s second English-language experience, after “The Human Voice” in 2020.

The screening will be followed by a conversation with Pedro Almodóvar and the filmmaking team. “Strange Way of Life” was produced by Agustín Almodóvar at El Deseo.

Almodovar revealed in a statement that the film’s title “alludes to the famous fado by Amalia Rodrigues, whose lyrics suggest that there is no stranger existence than the one that is lived by turning your back on your own desires.”

Scored by Alberto Iglesias, the western drama revolves around the bond between two men who met when they were young while working together as hired gunmen...

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy 4K (2011)
Image
This 2011 theatrical remake of John le Carré’s spy classic is a happy surprise — it’s every bit as distinctive and accomplished as the famed Alec Guinness TV miniseries. Swedish director Tomas Alfredson and the writers know how to tell a story — at just over two hours it’s neither bloated nor curtailed. Gary Oldman immediately makes the brilliant George Smiley his own — he’s younger but just as quiet and secretive. Oldman is surrounded by distinctive talent, an ensemble that serves the story: John Hurt, Colin Firth, Toby Jones, Ciarán Hinds, Benedict Cumberbatch, Mark Strong, Tom Hardy. It’s a delight for mystery-spy fans whether or not they’re familiar with the John le Carré-George Smiley universe.

“Exodus: Gods and Kings”
Take a look @ 'the good, the bad and the ugly' in director Ridley Scott's "Exodus: Gods and Kings":

Michael Stevens/SneakPeek.Ca For 'The Good'

"Most of us know how the story goes with director Ridley Scott delivering action adventure along the lines of 'Gladiator', with epic 3D sequences involving horses, chariots and thousands of ancient warriors.

"The recreation of Egypt through the efforts of hundreds of digital artists is visually impressive throughout the entire film, depicting David Lean-like arid deserts, the city of 'Memphis', plus a series of horrific plagues, tidal waves and cosmic weather anomalies.

"Criticism leveled at the film for using 'white' actors in main roles is unfounded, as actor Christian Bale delivers the goods in his depiction of 'Moses' aka 'Moishe', evolving from a self-assured 'royal' fighting machine, to a humble, man of God.

"Likewise Joel Edgerton is creatively cast as blue-eyed reptilian ruler 'Ramses',...

Pedro Almodóvar’s Oscar Diary: Zendaya Fandom, Backstage with Pacino, and ‘the Violent Episode’
Image
Editor’s note: The following essay was written by filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar shortly after he attended the 94th Academy Awards ceremony on Sunday. It was provided for IndieWire in an exclusive English translation. Almodóvar’s 2021 film “Parallel Mothers” was nominated for two awards: Best Actress (Penélope Cruz) and Best Original Score (Alberto Iglesias).

Yesterday was an exhausting day, especially in the evening. One of the secret reasons I have for being in Los Angeles (as well as going hand in hand with Penélope to the Dolby Theatre and experiencing in situ if her nomination still has a road to travel or if the prize was the nomination) is to meet with some actors as I think about the cast for my next film, which is starring Cate Blanchett and based on five stories by Lucia Berlin from her book “A Manual for Cleaning Women.” It’s an open secret, but I can’t discuss it,...

The 2022 Oscar Winners
Sian Heder
Well… Oscar night 2022 was certainly one to remember. Many obituaries will have received their first lines last night, and there’s a few moments that will appear half way down for some of them.

But – here’s the good news: Sian Heder’s Coda won Best Picture, and genuine living legend Troy Kotsur took home the Best Supporting Actor award. It may have been a surprise for some, as Jane Campion’s The Power of the Dog was hotly favoured. In the second piece of excellent news it was Campion herself who took home the Best Director gong, many would argue it’s long overdue.

Elsewhere Encanto, Will Smith, Jessica Chastain all took to the stage to collect their awards, and it’s pleasing to see another year when the awards were well spread out. It’s a sign of an industry in fine fettle, which is just as well given,...
