The Japanese horror boom of the 1990s wasn’t just limited to film, as most of the classic survival horror franchises that we now know and love came from Japanese developers offering a unique perspective on traditionally western settings. This is how we got iconic yet idiosyncratic locations like Raccoon City and even the cursed town of Silent Hill.
That’s why it makes sense that the latest entry in the Silent Hill series is aiming to return to the franchise’s East-Asian roots by having the game actually take place in 1970s Japan after decades of having western developers in charge of the IP. With that in mind, we’ve decided to come up with a list recommending six underrated Japanese Horror films to get you in the mood for NeoBards’ upcoming Silent Hill f.

The following article contains spoilers for Shgun. It also contains a mention of suicide.
Hiroyuki Sanada is one of the most talked-about Japanese actors in Hollywood. It's all due to FX's Shgun being a period drama and a masterpiece at the same time. In the series, Sanada plays Yoshii Toranaga, a feudal-era Lord of Edo, who works to ensure corrupt politicians and villains like Lord Ishido didn't govern Japan and take the throne.

The move attracted 539 projects from 20 regions including Taiwan, Japan, Korea, Indonesia, Singapore, Iran, France and the U.S. After a selection process overseen by four separate juries, the applications were whittled down to 43 across four sections: Project to Screen, divided further into Feature Films and Series; Animation Features & Series; and Documentary Features & Series.
The feature film section includes projects from leading filmmakers such as Japanese director Koji Fukada, Indonesia’s Edwin, the Philippines’ Sheron Deyoc (Women Of The Weeping River) and Japan-based, Indian-origin filmmaker Anshul Chauhan (December).

The episode of Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie? covering The Grudge (2004) was Written and Narrated by Adam Walton, Edited by Juan Jimenez, Produced by Andrew Hatfield and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.
If there was one thing the early noughties had in an abundance, especially within the horror genre, it was remakes. We were graced with reboots, or re-imaginings, whatever you want to call them, of the likes of Zack Snyder’s Dawn of the Dead, The Hills Have Eyes, The Amityville Horror, House of Wax, Rob Zombie’s Halloween remake from 2007 and The Ring. However, despite the decent quality of those examples, well most of them, one thing that stands out in the film we’re focusing on today, The Grudge (watch it Here), is the fact that the original’s director, Takashi Shimizu, chose to also take on the remake. In 2002 the aforementioned The Ring,...

If you’ve been stuck indoors watching tons of TV lately due to the global lockdowns – which are, admittedly, easing up now – you’ve probably gone through most of what’s on Netflix already. At least, most of their most notable stuff. But thankfully, there’s always new content in the pipeline and July, in particular, has several original series making their premiere on the platform.
Indeed, there’s much on the way, but 3 of them are definitely worth your time as they all promise to deliver on the considerable amount of buzz that’s beginning to build around them. Of course, you never really know what’s going to hit it big on the streaming site until release day, but each of these shows look very exciting, and for different reasons.
Up first is Cursed, which could just be the next Game of Thrones or The Witcher. Touching down on July 17th,...

Netflix has been a lifeline over the last two months of lockdown. Smash hits like Tiger King have given people something to talk about other than a deadly virus and many folks have taken the chance to catch up with some shows they might have missed. But if you’re running low on material that interests you, there are some really cool Netflix Originals scheduled for July.
These include a reboot of classic children’s show The Baby-Sitters Club (July 3rd), a new action-thriller starring Charlize Theron called The Old Guard (July 10th), the long-awaited Us streaming premiere of Michael Jordan documentary The Last Dance (July 19th) and (hopefully) the long-awaited fourth season of critically acclaimed anime The Seven Deadly Sins.

Back in 1998, Takashi Shimizu unwittingly created a monster when he debuted a couple of short films about a haunted house. Little did he know, a lingering horror franchise was about to be born. In 2000, a first feature film about the story, Ju-On: The Curse, arrived – and the rest is history. There are now thirteen Ju-On movies in the bank, including an initial 2004 Us remake, that run all the way up to this year’s Sam Raimi-produced ‘sidequel’ – it’s a perfectly cromulent word – which unfortunately debuted to a weary critical reception and a mere wisp of a western audience.
Now, Netflix has jumped on on the Ju-On bandwagon – the streaming service has just set a July release date for its foreign language TV series based on the ongoing myths surrounding the iconic Grudge house.

Netflix is doubling down on Mandarin-language content after picking up Taiwanese horror drama Green Door.
The Svod service is launching the series on March 16 in more than 190 countries and has said that the acquisition adds to the “increasing diversity and breadth of content that Netflix has to offer.”
The series launched on Taiwan’s Public Television Service in February and airs in a weekly Saturday slot. It is adapted from Taiwanese author Joseph Chen’s novel of the same title and directed by Lingo Hsieh, known for her fantasy-horror movie The Bride, which she co-created with Takashige Ichise.
Green Door tells the story of Sung-Yen Wei, played by Jam Hsiao, a troubled psychologist who returns from the U.S. to set up his own practice in Taiwan, where mysterious patients and uncanny events shed light on his murky past.

Nicolas Pesce’s Grudge is now scheduled to go earlier next summer, on June 21, instead of Aug. 16.
It’s a testament to Sony’s faith in the movie in an effort to get the widest audience possible. That’s not to say that horror doesn’t work when kids have one foot in school, and one foot at the beach in mid-August: Sony’s Screen Gems title Don’t Breathe was a smash in mid August as well as New Line’s Annabelle: Creation. On its new day, Grudge will be counterprogramming to Disney-Pixar’s Toy Story 4. Sony recently decided to play Angry Birds 2 on Aug. 16 instead. On that old date, there’s another R-rated title, Universal’s comedy Good Boys, and Open Road still has Play Mobil dated.

True to its name, The Grudge is a cult horror franchise that refuses to relent.
Not since the release of 2009’s lacklustre The Grudge 3 have we welcomed a new entry into the supernatural series, but that’s all about to change very soon. According to Deadline, The Eyes of My Mother filmmaker Nicolas Pesce has climbed aboard to write and direct The Grudge for Ghost House Pictures, which will be based on a spec script from Midnight Meat Train writer, Jeff Buhler. Sam Raimi, Rob Tapert, and Taka Ichise are all on board to produce the horror reboot, working in tandem with executive producers Roy Lee, Doug Davison, Joe Drake and Nathan Kahane.
Little is currently known about the plot, but it’s safe to assume that Ghost House Pictures’ reimagining of The Grudge will chronicle the titular entity as it moves from one grief-stricken victim to another, leaving...

Meowing might become a scary sound again, as a reboot of The Grudge, itself a remake of the Japanese film Ju-on: The Grudge, now has a director.
According to Deadline, the latest film in The Grudge franchise is set to be directed and rewritten by Nicolas Pesce, the filmmaker behind 2016's The Eyes of My Mother, a big hit on the festival circuit and a film that our own Heather Wixson called "a hauntingly provocative slice of gothic cinema" in her review.
Pesce is expected to provide additional work to a previous screenplay written by Jeff Buhler, who adapted Clive Barker's The Midnight Meat Train for the screen and also co-wrote the upcoming Jacob's Ladder remake.

Nearly six years after The Grudge reboot was first announced by Sam Raimi's Ghost House Pictures, a director has finally been found. Filmmaker Nicolas Pesce, whose critically-acclaimed directorial debut The Eyes Of My Mother debuted at Sundance last year, has signed on to direct The Grudge reboot, and rewrite the script. While no production schedule or release date has been announced yet, it seems this horror reboot is finally moving forward in the right direction, after years of languishing in development hell.
Deadline reports that Nicolas Pesce will rewrite the existing script, which was first worked on by Jeff Buhler (Midnight Meat Train), who came aboard to write the script in 2014. No details have been given about the existing script, or Nicolas Pesce's new vision for the project, or how it may diverge from the original Japanese movie, or the American remake. We caught up last week with writer Jeff Buhler, who provided us with updates on his scripted remakes of The Grudge, Jacob’s Ladder, and director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo’s Pet Sematary reboot for Paramount.
Buhler, who is known to genre audiences for scripting 2008’s Clive Barker-inspired Midnight Meat Train and writing and directing that year’s feature Insanitarium, said of the script he penned of the remake of the 1990 film Jacob’s Ladder for Ld Entertainment with director James Foley attached to helm, “The script has been finished for some time.”
“Foley’s enthusiasm is very high, and he’s coming to this project with a lot of ideas,” he expounded.
“From what I understand, when he was up for this job, he basically told [executive producer] Mickey Lidell that if they hired a different director, he would murder them. That’s the level of enthusiasm we are talking about.

With Sam Raimi and his Ghost House Pictures banner (in conjunction with Good Universe) set to deliver a remake/re-launch of The Grudge property, we sat down exclusively with the film’s writer Jeff Buhler (above) to get the skinny. Read on!
Taking from both the Takashi Shimizu-directed films Ju-on: The Grudge (2002) and the 2004 Sarah Michelle Gellar-starring The Grudge, the new film will be produced by Raimi, along with Rob Tapert and Taka Ichise. Roy Lee, Doug Davison, Joe Drake and Nathan Kahane executive produce.
Said Buhler, who is known to genre audiences for scripting 2008’s Clive Barker-inspired Midnight Meat Train and writing and directing that year’s feature Insanitarium (and who is also penning the remake of the 1990 film Jacob’s Ladder), “I’ve actually been talking to Ghost House for a couple of years about it. Sam Raimi's Ghost House Pictures and Good Universe are planning to remake the 2004 horror film The Grudge, which is already a remake of the Japanese film Ju-On. Both were directed by Takashi Shimizu.
The studio is already working on it and has hired Midnight Meat Train scribe Jeff Buhler to write the script. He is also working on a remake of the insane movie Jacob's Ladder.
The American version starred Sarah Michelle Gellar as a nurse living and working in Tokyo. She is exposed to a mysterious supernatural curse that locks a person in a powerful rage before claiming their life and spreading to another victim. It cost around $10 million to make. In the end it pulled in $187 million worldwide and led to a terrible sequel.
The new film will be produced by Raimi, Rob Tapert, and Taka Ichise. I thought we were over the phase of scary pale killer ghost kids.

Ghost House Pictures and Good Universe are teaming to produce a reboot of "The Grudge" franchise.
Takashi Shimizu helmed both the original Japanese "Ju-On" and its 2004 Hollywood remake "The Grudge" starring Sarah Michelle Gellar. That remake scored $187 million worldwide from a $10 million budget.
Gellar played an American nurse working in Tokyo, who is exposed to a dangerous supernatural curse that locks the victim into a powerful rage.
Two further sequels were made in 2006 and 2009, the last going direct-to-video. Jeff Buhler ("Midnight Meat Train," "Insanitarium") has been hired to write the reboot's script.
Sam Raimi, who produced the first remake, will also produce this reboot alongside Rob Tapert and Takashige Ichise. No production schedule has been announced.

While the Ju-on series continues on in Japan, The Grudge stopped in 2009 after a third movie that failed to impress. Fans may be happy to learn that it’s not the last we’ve seen of this franchise, as Ghost House Pictures and Good Universe are planning a relaunch.
According to Deadline, Midnight Meat Train writer Jeff Buhler will write the script for the new movie, with Sam Raimi, Rob Tapert, and Taka Ichise producing. Roy Lee, Doug Davison, Joe Drake and Nathan Kahane are also set as executive producers. There’s no word on Ju-on creator and The Grudge director Takashi Shimizu’s involvement, but this is a very early announcement, so we’ll keep Daily Dead readers posted on any future developments.

Gather round, children, and I'll tell you a tale, a tale of a time when the spirits of young Japanese girls haunted movie theaters around the world. The fad likely started with 1998's Ringu, a horror movie that inspired Gore Verbinski's 2002 film, The Ring. That same year, writer-director Takashi Shimizu took the genre further with Ju-On: The Grudge. True to form, that film was also remade in America, with Takashi again at the helm and Sarah Michelle Gellar in a starring role. I tell you this because even though The Grudge managed to churn out a few sequels, the property is now headed for a total reboot with plans to build a new franchise. Hit the jump for more. Deadline reports that Ghost House Pictures and Good Universe will relaunch The Grudge with Jeff Buhler (Midnight Meat Train) drafting the script. The low-budget horror film was the first in...

Sam Raimi's Ghost House Pictures and Nathan Kahane's Good Universe are rebooting the 2004 horror-thriller The Grudge, setting Jeff Buhler (Midnight Meat Train, Insanitarium) to write the script.
Takashi Shimizu directed both the original Japanese thriller Ju-On and the English-language version The Grudge, which starred Sarah Michelle Gellar as an American nurse working in Tokyo, who is exposed to a dangerous supernatural curse that locks the victim into a powerful rage.
The Grudge earned an impressive $187 million worldwide from just a $10 million budget, which helped establish the viability of low-budget horror films, five years before the micro-budget Paranormal Activity franchise took off. Sarah Michelle Gellar returned for the 2006 sequel The Grudge 2, but she did not star in the straight-to-video follow-up The Grudge 3 in 2009. The Japanese Ju-On franchise has spawned six separate features, with the seventh movie, Ju-On: The Beginning of The End, slated for release in Japan later this year.

The 2004 film starred Sarah Michelle Gellar and was directed by Takashi Shimazu, who also helmed the 2002 Japanese original "Ju-On: The Grudge." In the film, an American nurse living in Tokyo (Gellar) is haunted by a powerful curse fueled by the rage of the dying. The U.S. version cost just $10 million to produce and grossed some $187 million worldwide. It was followed by a less successful sequel in 2006. Jeff Buhler ("Midnight Meat Train") is onboard to write the reboot, according to Deadline. Plot details have yet to be revealed. Sam Raimi, Rob Tapert and Taka Ichise will produce, alongside exec producers Roy Lee, Doug Davison, Joe Drake and Nathan Kahane.

It may all be a little foggy now, but back in 2002 the success of Gore Verbinski’s remake of Hideo Nakata’s “The Ring” kicked off what would quickly become a Japanese horror film remake frenzy. While limp entries into the subgenre like “Shutter” or “The Eye” would eventually help cannibalize the market for these films later in the decade, the success of the first “The Ring” would bring Nakata’s own talents stateside for a sequel, along with seeing Jennifer Connonly star in a remake of his “Dark Water,” directed by Walter Salles of all people.

Hideo Nakata will probably never make another film with the same influence and impact as Ringu — it should be evident what that was later remade into — but that certainly doesn’t stop him from working like a hound.
