'The Only Thing I Wish About It...': Star Trek: Tng Stars Reveal Their Reactions to Galaxy Quest
Image
More than a quarter of a century after its release, Galaxy Questremains among the gold standards in space sci-fi parody films. Starring Tim Allen, Alan Rickman, and Sigourney Weaver, the movie that follows the cast of a 1970s space TV show who become heroes of the galaxy, is by some considered a bit of a love letter to the Star Trekfranchise.

During a panel at the Indiana Comic Convention, Collider’s Steve Weintraub asked some Star Trek: The Next Generation alums what they thought of 1999’s Galaxy Quest.

“It’s perfect. It perfectly captures the essence (of Star Trek) with love and humor and intelligence…it’s so well-crafted,” said Denise Crosby, who played Lieutenant Tasha Yar in the first season of Tng and the Season 3 episode, “Yesterday’s Enterprise.”

Galaxy Quest Review: 25 Years Later, This Is Still One Of The Best Star Trek Movies
Image
I can't remember how old I was the first time I watched Galaxy Quest, but the memory sticks out all the same. My dad introduced it to me, no doubt because he thought my Harry Potter-obsessed self would get a kick out of seeing Severus Snape in a prosthetic alien headpiece. He was right, and to this day it remains one of my favorite movies.

One Shot | “Lost in America”
Image
One Shot invites close readings of the basic unit of film grammar.Lost in America. What makes you mad? And when you’re very angry—you know, furious—how long does it last? And who (or what) are you blaming for what’s happening? When David Howard, the yuppie antihero of Albert Brooks’s Lost in America (1985), learns he hasn’t received the long-coveted promotion to senior vice president at his advertising agency, he loses it. After one too many “fuck yous” leveled at his boss, Paul, he is fired and security is called. In the next shot, David walks backward and points accusatorially at the camera lens. Although he is unaccompanied, it feels like he’s being dragged away by an invisible guard. Employees emerge from their offices on either side of the hallway as he yells his piece, warning them of Paul’s deceptiveness. A commonplace in cinema...

Where To Watch Terrifier 3: Showtimes & Streaming Status
Image
Art the Clown is back with another blood-soaked movie, and there are options for where to watch Terrifier 3 in theaters or on streaming. The third installment in Damien Leone's horror movie franchise arrived in 2024, two years after the release of the previous installment. Building off Terrifier 2's ending, the threequel continues the story of Sienna Shaw (Lauren Lavera) after surviving the previous encounter with Art the Clown (David Howard Thornton). This time, instead of another Halloween setting, the movie switches its holiday setting to take place around Christmas.

The Terrifier movies have all received some level of theatrical release before, and the cult following for the incredibly violent horror movies has made them events for specific audiences. The gruesome killings and its qualification as a Not Rated movie because the contents are even worse than an R-rated movie can contain left some audiences who saw Terrifier 3 feeling sick.

Tomas Alfredson on Remaking Ingmar Bergman’s Steamy Infidelity Drama ‘Faithless’ as a TV Series
Image
The story of Faithless, the new six-part TV series from director Tomas Alfredson (Let the Right One In, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy) is familiar to European arthouse fans. Renowned director David Howard, 73, is reunited with the great love of his life, the actress Marianne Vogler, 75, and forced to reflect on the painful consequences of their affair decades earlier when Marianne was married to David’s best friend, Markus. In 2000, actress-director Liv Ullmann (Cries and Whispers), muse and frequent collaborator to the legendary Swedish director Ingmar Bergman (The Seventh Seal), adapted the story from Bergman’s previously unproduced screenplay. The tale of lust, adultery, and the damage wrought by desire, premiered in Cannes and has been hailed as a modern-day classic.

For his limited series adaptation, Alfredson teamed with screenwriter Sara Johnsen (July 22) to reexamine and expand Ullmann and Bergman’s original story. The basics of the plot are the same.

Screamboat Teaser Trailer Previews Terrifiers Art The Clown Actor As Killer Steamboat Willie
Image
One of horror's more divisive trends continues in the Screamboat teaser trailer. The movie hails from director Steven Lamorte, who previously made a name for himself by directing 2022's The Mean One, a slasher horror twist on Dr. Seuss' How The Grinch Stole Christmas. Screamboat will center on a group of New Yorkers who come under attack by a figure who looks akin to Mickey Mouse aboard a late-night ferry, with the project entering development after Steamboat Willie entered the public domain.

Now, some eight months after the movie was first announced, Iconic Events Releasing has debuted the first Screamboat teaser trailer.

The video, as seen above, offers a brief glimpse at the upcoming slasher horror movie, largely keeping the killer twist on Mickey Mouse offscreen while instead focusing on the various potential victims of the film. The footage does, however, offer a quick tease of the killer's design, with...

Tomas Alfredson & Sara Johnsen On Adapting Ingmar Bergman’s ‘Faithless’ & Why TV Is A Much “Freer Art Form” For Creatives – London TV Screenings
Image
Exclusive: Swedish filmmaker Tomas Alfredson, now best known as the director behind beautiful, taut features like Let the Right One In and Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, wrote to Swedish screen legend Ingmar Bergman sometime in the early 2000s with an idea. Bergman’s response was characteristically colorful.

“What the hell is this? What do you mean?” Bergman told Alfredson.

Alfredson had told the Persona filmmaker that he wanted to remake Faithless, the 2000 feature Bergman had written about an imaginary woman who recollects her painful experience of adultery to an aging filmmaker. The pic played in competition that year in Cannes and was directed by Bergman’s ex-wife, actress Liv Ullmann.

“This was long before everyone was producing remakes, so it was a very unusual question, especially for Bergman,” Alfredson said.

Fast forward to February 2024 and Alfredson is deep into an edit of a contemporary TV adaptation of Faithless he has...

Galaxy Quest Series Now in Development for Paramount+
Image
Sam Rockwell is interested in reprising his role in a possible Galaxy Quest sequel or limited series. A television series based on Galaxy Quest has been attempted before, with Amazon Studios showing interest. The death of Alan Rickman in 2016 impacted discussions for a straight-up sequel to the original movie.

The possibility of a Galaxy Quest sequel is something that has been floating in space for some time now. Last year it was revealed that a new iteration of the sci-fi comedy was in development as a series for Paramount+. In a recent interview with GQ, Sam Rockwell, who appeared as part of the ensemble cast of the film, said he would "be on it" if the sequel came to fruition. He said:

It was a really lucky thing, that film. If there was a sequel to Galaxy Quest, we would be on it. We talked about it, maybe like a limited series.

5 Deep Cut Horror Movies to Seek Out in October 2023
Image
For a horror fan, the month of October is naturally designated for everything related to Halloween. So this month’s installment of Deep Cuts Rising features a variety of horror movies that take place on or around October 31st. As usual, though, these selections can generally be considered overlooked, forgotten or unknown.

This month’s Halloween-themed offerings include zombies, witchcraft, killers, and more.

The Midnight Hour (1985)

Image: The Midnight Club (1985)

Directed by Jack Bender.

The Midnight Hour is a great warm-up for the Halloween season, right before diving into heavier or scarier movies. This telefilm originally aired on ABC, then later showed up on cable. While it didn’t open to rave reviews, it has certainly found an audience over the years. The plot is simple enough: teens fool around with magic and accidentally raise an evil sorceress on Halloween. As the night goes on, the town is taken over by ghouls and monsters.

Galaxy Quest's Director And Writer Knew Their Mission Was A Difficult One
Image
What's the best "Star Trek" movie? Is it "The Wrath of Khan"? "The Voyage Home"? "First Contact"? Many a Trekkie have said, half or fully seriously, that the answer is the loving parody film, "Galaxy Quest." "High concept" doesn't even begin to cover the film: aliens (the Thermians) who believe that a short-lived sci-fi series was a documentary recruit the cast to help them battle a galactic tyrant.

The sci-fi show in question is a "Trek" parody, a program that was cut short but kept alive decades later by an obsessive fandom. Jason Nesmith (Tim Allen) is William Shatner, the egomaniac who soaks up public adoration so much he doesn't notice how his co-stars loathe him. Alexander Dane (Alan Rickman) isn't a one-to-one for Leonard Nimoy, but his resentment of playing the alien "Dr. Lazarus" is in line with Nimoy's autobiography, "I Am Not Spock". Sigourney Weaver, a silver screen...

Swirling, swirling, swirling, all down the drain. Passed over for a promotion -- scratch that -- fired from his job, helplessly watching as all his hopes and dreams go right down the toilet, David Howard has a moment of clarity. He will follow the path of the counter-culture idols he grew up adoring, those maggot-infested hippie roadsters of Easy Rider. He will sever all ties, and drop out. Well, most ties. His marriage must stay intact. And they've gotta have a place to live. And a way of paying for it. Plus living expenses. And you know, not all ties are bad... probably best to hold onto a necktie or two, in case the whole plan goes bad. Not that it ever would...! These are,...

The following year director Albert Brooks and his co-writer Monica Johnson delivered Lost In America, an acerbic road movie detailing what happens when one of those upwardly mobile hot-shots decides to get back to nature and “touch Indians”.

The result is one of the great American comedies, a mile-a-minute talk fest worthy of writer-directors like Billy Wilder, Woody Allen and in particular Preston Sturges, whose The Palm Beach Story told a similar tale about two young-marrieds who find...

While we wait for any additional details on that, here are 16 fun facts about Galaxy Quest.

The following information was found on IMDb, but I’ve added my own commentary as well as images and video to show some things off.

Robert Downey Jr. Plays A Con Game With 'Chasing Phil'
For all of his Marvel movie success, the projects in between the comic book blockbusters haven't been particularly memorable for Robert Downey Jr. Last year's awards season bait "The Judge" whiffed fairly hard aside from a token Oscar nomination for Robert Duvall. "Due Date" was a retread of "The Hangover" films in its basic structure and the watered down antics of Zach Galifianakis, with 2011's "Sherlock Holmes: A Game Of Shadows" marking the last true non-Marvel success for the actor. But like many A-listers around town he's got handful of vehicles brewing and Rdj has added another. Robert Downey Jr. May Be A Con Man For Chasing Phil
When he’s not busy with his Marvel Cinematic Universe duties or starring in other dramas and comedies, Robert Downey Jr. likes to slip on his producer’s hat and develop films with Team Downey partner (and wife) Susan Downey. The pair has just set another project at Warner Bros., with the studio making a deal for Chasing Phil. Any eventual film will be based on David Howard’s book Chasing Phil: The World’s Greatest Con Man, Two Undercover FBI Agents, And Their Amazing Around The World Adventure, which tells how the agency began its attempts to investigate white-collar crime as two young agents – Jim Wedick and Jack Brennan – insinuated themselves undercover into the inner circle of Phil Kitzer, a charismatic mastermind and con artist. Sigourney Weaver, Alan Rickman, and Tim Allen in Galaxy Quest (1999)
Galaxy Quest TV Series Under Construction
Sigourney Weaver, Alan Rickman, and Tim Allen in Galaxy Quest (1999)
Paramount has been eagerly raiding the film archive for titles to turn into TV series, and it has its next target on the radar. 1999’s Galaxy Quest is now in development for the small screen. The movie, in case you’ve never seen it, took a satirical look at the casts of Star Trek in particular, following the misadventures of a group of actors still dealing with being typecast as their characters on the sci-fi series Galaxy Quest. Preening leading man Jason Nesmith (Tim Allen), who played Captain Peter Quincey Taggart, has long since annoyed the rest of his former colleagues to breaking point with his slack attitude. But then they’re contacted by a group of aliens they mistake to be super fans, who need their help with a nasty tyrant creature. The result? the group is suddenly flung into a very real situation in space. Director Dean Parisot...

Galaxy Quest Cast and Crew Reminisce About the Film and Express the Desire to Make a Sequel
Confession. I haven’t seen Galaxy Quest. I mean, I’m sure I’ve technically seen the whole thing in bits and pieces on cable (and my best friend’s dad in high school was a huge Star Trek nerd so he had the laserdisc of this on repeat at their house), but I’ve never actually sat down to watch the entire thing. I think this has a lot to do with the fact that it came out in 1999, a year in which I was an insufferable faux snob, only deigning to watch stuff like Magnolia, Fight Club and Being John Malkovich. I just didn’t have the time for a goofy movie with Tim Allen, Sigourney Weaver, Alan Rickman and Sam Rockwell. Turns out I was likely wrong, and I continue to pay the price. Time has been kind to Galaxy Quest in terms of cultural response, and...

The Nostalgia Files: ‘Galaxy Quest’ (1999)
Galaxy Quest

Written by David Howard and Robert Gordon

Directed by Dean Parisot

USA, 1999

“Never give up. Never surrender.” Truer words have never been spoken. In 1999, the science fiction genre was shaken up a bit by a movie so smart and so funny that no other film has managed to duplicate its greatness ever since. That film is Galaxy Quest, a hilarious satire of all things sci-fi, most specifically the Star Trek franchise. Galaxy Quest isn’t simply a parody of Star Trek, though. It’s a parody of a show within a movie that bears an extraordinary resemblance to Star Trek, and this goofy send-up is the perfect recipe for intelligent humor, dazzling special effects, and pure movie magic.

The film follows a group of semi-washed up actors who starred in Galaxy Quest, a Trek-esque TV show from the early 1980s.Led by Jason Nesmith (Tim Allen), this band...

Google Demands The Windows Phone YouTube App Go Back Off The Market
Last week, we reported that Google's YouTube mobile app was back in the Windows Phone store after a three month absence. While it returned with a number of new features, the only one that mattered to Google (who ordered Microsoft to make the new version) was increased support for pre-roll ads. Clearly, the new YouTube app hasn't been much of an improvement in that category, because after just two days on the market, it has been recalled once again. Google is clearly interested in a greater proliferation of mobile ads because of the revenue spike it saw when they became available on Iphones last year. "Microsoft has not made the browser upgrades necessary to enable a fully-featured YouTube experience, and has instead re-released a YouTube app that violates our Terms of Service," a spokesperson told The Verge. Microsoft is obviously sick of getting pushed around by its fellow tech giant.

Galaxy Quest writer working on original animated film for Paramount
In an interview with THR, Paramount Film Group President Adam Goodman talked about various upcoming movies from the studio. On the subject of animated films, he said, "We feel we have the ability to make these kinds of movies as well as any company does. I can't talk about the project, but Robert Gordon [Galaxy Quest] is writing an original story for us."

For fans of the cult 1999 sci-fi comedy Galaxy Quest, directed by Dean Parisot, with a story by David Howard and a screenplay by David Howard and Robert Gordon, this is great news.

Though the writers don’t have many film credits to their names (with David Howard only credited for Galaxy Quest, and Robert Gordon credited for a couple of other things, including Men in Black II and Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events; though IMDb says they both have a project called Bizarro Superman in development...
